domestic birds (my favorite is chinese geese: funny, sweet, intelligent, great conversationalists)
i hate to lump stuff into such broad categories but if i was more specific the poll would be too long pfft
bonus points if you talk in the tags about why you chose your favorite and/or show pictures of your non-mammal pet(s) lol
#this is an interesting one. i picked birds (domestic only) as they are the only domesticated ones here#i.e. animals that not only benefit from but require human companionship and care#but i think land invertebrates are a very close runner up as it is possible for the average person to entirely supply all their care needs#in captivity. most invertebrates kept as pets are just as content as they would be in the wild provided they get proper husbandry#fish as well can be very well cared for in captivity but it is much much more difficult for the average person to get that right or have the#resources to provide for all their needs/maintain big enough enclosures/etc.#but basically: domestic birds make good pets because they're built to be human companions#invertebrates make good pets because you can have the happiest isopods in the world for pennies#fish amphibians and reptiles all have elaborate care needs that the vast majority of owners are frankly not meeting in the slightest#don't own non-domesticated birds do not own parrots do not own songbirds
