Don’t look down

On top of one of the world’s tallest church spires, there’s a light. Technically, it’s an air traffic warning beacon.

When the lightbulb burned out, workers were sent up to replace it. To get to the light, they had to scale the outside of the spire in climbing gear.

Local news interviewed them afterwards. Asking how they were able to keep from losing their balance. While working at such a height, with the wind whipping past them, and so little to stand on.

The answer from one of the workers was elegant in its simplicity.

“Keep your eyes where they need to be. And don’t look down.”

It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever heard. And not just for climbing church steeples.

When bad things happen, when something goes wrong in life, it can be hard to look away. Whether it’s happening to us or to someone else, something about it just pulls us in.

Maybe we’re trying to understand how it happened. Or trying to figure out what to do. Sometimes it’s just the spectacle of the disaster itself.

No matter why, when we focus on the disaster, we set ourselves up to get stuck in it. At least mentally. Maybe even physically.

When we get stuck in a disaster, that’s where we stay. Stuck. In a place that God never intended us to be. Fixated on all the wrong things.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t respond to the disasters of life. That we shouldn’t help other people. Or ourselves.

What I am saying is that we need to respond to the disasters of life, not with our focus on the disaster, but with our focus on God.

Look at today’s Gospel. When John gets arrested, Jesus could easily have focused on what happened to John. Jesus could have railed against the injustice. Or worried about whether He would get arrested next. 

Instead, Jesus keeps His eyes where they need to be. On God.

Instead of focusing on the disaster, Jesus takes the next step. As God gives it to Him.

Instead of trying to be in control, Jesus leaves the big picture – including all the what-if’s – to God.

This is the way. The way to respond to life’s disasters. The way to ensure we’re in God’s will, and doing the greatest good. The way to keep our peace.

By following the wisdom from the top of a steeple.

Keep your eyes where they need to be. On God.

And don’t look down.
