So I went to see Spiderman Homecoming even though I wasn’t at all excited about it because I needed a break from life for a few hours.

I was surprisingly impressed with the movie and with the young actors. That Scene was just as heart-wrenching as everyone said. Peter actually acted like a 15-year-old. The villian was sympathetic and thus rememberable (one of the MCU’s biggest problems is lackluster villains).

But honestly, the thing that has stuck with me is how much less I like Tony after this.

The movie confirmed Peter was even younger than I assumed in Civil War (I was thinking 17. He was very much /not/ 17.) It also confirmed that Tony did not at all inform him of what was going on beyond “Captian America is bad now and we gotta fight him.” It also reeked of some kind of emotional manipulation or something from Tony and Happy, as Tony led Peter to believe (intentionally or not) that Peter is an Avenger or could be an Avenger if he just tries hard enough and proves himself, while both men go on to completely ignore the kid like he never existed and only contact him when he’s in trouble (expect that one scene when Peter finally gets through to Happy and Happy essentially tells him to buzz off).

Like, this is a kid that Tony brought into this wild world of big-time crime fighting for a day or two and then dropped him like last season’s Pradas. This is a kid who lost his parents and just recently lost the biggest male role model in his life. This is a kid who so desperately wants to do good and seeks the approval of the man he’s looked up to for most of his life that he was willing to fight a battle that he knew nothing about just because Mr. Stark wanted him to.

And I know, I know, you could argue that Tony and Happy didn’t know this stuff, but they /could have/. Peter’s an open book. If either of them bothered to get to know the kid /at all/, they would’ve known this stuff. So that’s on them.

Now there were some blips and hiccups that I can excuse. After all, we all make mistakes, and it must be hard for someone like Tony to suddenly have the responsibility of a teenager to protect and care for weighing down on him.

But I so /desperately/ wanted Tony to be a good mentor. I so /desperately/ wanted to see some kind of character growth from him. Something to show that he is capable of growing up, because after watching the entire first phase and most of the second phase of the MCU countless times, I haven’t seen much. That’s why I write fanfiction that includes more character growth for Tony, because I’m so desperate for it I’ll fucking make it myself if I have to.

Idk, I just remember seeing a rumor that said Tony wasn’t going to be Peter’s main mentor in the next Spiderman movie. I’m hoping it’s true, cuz I’ve given Tony’s character like… what… 8 movies to develop and become someone I can at least kind of respect. The more we go into this, though, the more respect I lose for him.

I think I’m counting IM3 as the last canon interpretation of Tony I’ll accept. Everything beyond that has been… disappointing, to say the /absolute/ least.

Plus side, though? I’m offically on board for this Spiderman reboot, even if it is the third in under 20 years. Tom is great as Peter and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Vulture. Like that first credit scene had me doing a double-take. This is going to be one hell of a hero/villian relationship, so long as the MCU doesn’t muck it up.
