Lockwood: My beloved sister died several years ago which has haunted me ever since and provides my primary motivation as well as feeding my obvious death wish.
Lucy, who has 6 living sisters she just doesn't talk to: Bummer.

Trip to Eugene, OR. to see Hayley Heynderickx open for Lucy Dacus at the McDonald Theatre.
Hayley Heynderickx may be one of the best openers I’ve seen - her completely solo act was funny and the music was warm.
The crowd was high energy through both acts, which got frustrating toward the end of Lucy Dacus’ set because of the heckling. “Play this! Play this! Come on I came all this way!”
Lucy leans into the mic, “How about... I play what I originally wanted to play.”
Hayley talks about connecting with her femininity - she writes down her dreams, she gardens, she worships her mother. I wish I had grown up with an appreciation for womanhood - my own mothers internalized misogyny I now realize wrecked any chance at a foundation for that, so I must build it up now. I wish I knew how.
Lucy plays her own childhood home videos in the background of her set, and the lighting matches up with the theme. Discs spin behind the band as though reeling through tapes.
Both worthwhile acts to see live - especially Hayley, who’s acoustic solo and spoken word kept the audience engaged and wanting more. I bought a sweater from Lucy, one of each of her albums to date; a tote bag from Hayley, and a CD of her only album so far, “I Need to Start a Garden.” I really hope she comes back to release more soon.
The next morning, we went to Tailored Coffee Roasters for breakfast. We both got their avocado toast, then a hot ube latte for her and an iced hibiscus soda for me.
Genuinely, best avocado toast I’ve had - it was simple but flavorful, I wish I’d gotten a photo. It had lemon juice, salt, pepper, tomatoes, didn’t skimp on the avocado at all, and on two slices of thick sourdough bread.
The soda I got was, just ok. Really pretty color, just not into the flavor. Hibiscus is one flower flavor that is just hit or miss for me. The hot ube latte, however, was so good and subtly sweet. I ordered an iced one to go, added some cane syrup to it, and then we were on the road home.
I decided that since we left so early, we had time to drive up the coast back home. I’m glad I did, just to see if I could do a drive so long, but I won’t do it again if it isn’t a must for the trip.
That being said, we drove through numerous towns up the Oregon coast, on many winding cliffsides overlooking the crashing waves, This day was exceptionally cold and windy, and the water was a beautiful green and stark white.
Eugene remains a favorite of mine to visit. We stayed in a very cute and charming little inn, which I cannot remember the name of. The rooms were named after classical musicians.
The charm of Eugene for me lies in the walkable downtown, and the college town energy that it plays into - fills me with regret for not going anywhere myself, a nostalgia for an experience I didn’t get to have.
But it’s a pleasure to pass through.
