It's salary vs hourly, not white collar vs everyone else.
White collar is often hourly too & cut hours means cut pay & benefits (if you have any).
If you get into even low level management (i.e. on the floor) in retail they are crappy salary, but still salaried, workers (i.e. free overtime for employers).
In 30 years of mostly white collar work, I only had two years on salary. In my retail years, I worked side by side with "managers" whose wages often ended up be less than their previous hourly because of the hours expected of them.
What we need is universal basic income & unions.
this article said everything out loud that I feel and stuff down when my salaried 9-5 friends talk about 4-day weeks or how universal remote work has changed their lives
