Brittany, like Brett and Puck, is a super senior. They failed their senior year with a remarkable 0.0 GPA, but they completely turned it around their second year. They even got an early admission to MIT, but it only took Brittany a month or two to miss home and all their friends. They didn't want to be math genius, instead choosing to go back to Lima and go to McKinley Arts to pursue other ventures.
Brittany is openly bisexual and nonbinary. They knew from a young age that they liked more than one gender, but it took another year of high school and soul searching to realize that just like with their sexuality, their gender cannot be defined within the margins of the gender binary. They've had their fair share of hookups and trysts with a whole lot of different people. They've never been ashamed of it and who they are. To help pay for college, they occasionally do a video or two with Sam, the other blonde letting them keep all the earnings from said films.
Brittany has a pretty successful YouTube channel called Fondue for Two that they started in high school. They invite guests from their life to interview them over fondue and whatever else they have lying around.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME ON 'FONDUE FOR TWO' AND JUDGE MY CAT?

Nashville Film Festival: The Day the Music Stopped
the"The Day the Music Stopped,” directed by Patrick Sheehan is a 95 minute film that explores the independent end of an iconic Nashville music venue, the Exit/In. Last year’s Nashville Film Festival ended with a wonderful buffet meal at the Exit/In. The Big Names who have played at the iconic Exit/In venue appeared on plaques that literally filled the walls. You could feel the history in the room. The Exit/In hosted its last indie concert on November 23, 2022. Fifty-one years of music as an independent venue stopped when Goliath beat David. As Wikipedia explained Exit/In’s demise, it had 25 different owners over the years from 1971 to 2022 and was not continuously open. But it definitely was a place where many big names in music either got their start or performed over the years. Comedian Steve Martin performed there while climbing the ladder of success. LAST INDIE OWNERS LOSE The final owners before the Big Boys of Music moved in and took over were Chris Cobb and his wife, Teisha, who put up a valiant fight to keep the venue independent. Says Wikipedia, on November 14, 2022, club operators, Chris and Telisha Cobb, announced their departure. In December 2022 AJ Capital Partners, was announced as the new purchasers and operators of the venue. The venue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. There are still shows at Exit/In and the Rock Block, but admission prices to the 500-seat space have, no doubt, increased. (At one time there was even talk of how Live Nation would charge musicians a fee simply to use their lights.) There is a hopeful bit of film showcasing Attorney General Merrick Garland at the very end of the film that would probably bring forth a cheer from the group assembled in the photo below this paragraph. Exit/In’s last indie show in 2022. This film depicts the tumultuous last show as an indie venue and also charts a path forward that gives a glimmer of hope—a national movement and alliance, Save our Stages. Watching the crowd surfing group revel one last time you could feel the joy and also the sadness in the room. The city and the state face the reality that capitalistic greed is destroying the music culture created in Nashville over decades. As Chris Cobb of the Exit/In said, “The winds of charge are certainly upon us.” Much of the fight centers on who owns the brand name “Exit/In.” (Still unresolved). A.J. Capital Partners (of Chicago) is the villain of the piece, especially when we learn that they are in business with Live Nation. It seems to be only a matter of time before the Big Boys gobble up all of the small venues that used to provide platforms for the future Taylor Swifts and Garth Brooks of the music business. Nashville. One by one, iconic venues are listed and (mostly) shown going under—Mercy Lounge (closed May 19, 2022), Douglas Corners, Exit/In, Lindsay Corners (saw Low Cut Connie there), the Bluebird Cafe. The music business is still very unstable post-pandemic. The iconic venue once reopened in 1981 by Chuck Berry, which spawned so many big names through the years, is one of the casualties of what is described as “a corporate takeover of America by capitalists.” Exit/In is still open, but it’s not the same. THE OLD DAYS Many in the documentary talk about how, if you arrived in Nashville before 2012 or 2013, Nashville was a very different town. My daughter selected Nashville as her college town in 2005 (Belmont College). She can testify to the many changes that the city has experienced. The film does a good job of explaining why 43 buildings on Music Row were demolished between 2013 and 2018. It also lays bare the dilemma that Nashville faces. “It truly is a crisis situation here in Music City.” As the Mayor outlined “an unparalleled series of challenges for cities with only a few million in cash reserves” the picture begins to focus. It’s not good news for those who considered Exit/In “a sacred space for Nashville.” John Cooper, Mayor of Nashville. John Cooper, the Mayor of Nashville, explains that, although Nashville has certainly enjoyed a booming economy, “We had not been a good steward of our finances.” When tough times hit, Nashville only had a few million dollars in its contingency fund, not enough to handle the crises that beset the city, beginning in 2010. THE FLOOD, THE TORNADOES, COVID & OTHER ASSORTED CATASTROPHES First, there was the flood of 2010, which ruined much of downtown Nashville. Then came the deadliest tornado on record on March 2, 2020 (25 people died). (There’s been another since then that killed 3 people on the block where my daughter lives in December of 2023.) Just one week later, Covid struck the nation and the world. Indie music venues were impacted very negatively. Even today, “a lot of clubs are in limbo.” It is an eco-system that cannot survive without assistance. The Exit/In closed for what they thought would be 3 months when the pandemic hit. Add to the natural disasters the 63-year-old Nashville resident, Anthony Quinn Walker, who blew himself up inside an RV parked outside an AT&T building on December 25th of 2020, taking most of historic 2nd Avenue with him, and you have the makings of the dilemma that haunts Nashville now. As the film points out so well, the residents of Nashville have to ask themselves “Where are we heading?” A GLIMMER OF HOPE Famous spokespeople like Ben Folds speak out about the potential closing of RCA Studio A, the studio where Chet Atkins and Elvis recorded. It was established on June 20, 1924. It almost met the wrecking ball on Chet Atkins’ 90th birthday, until some notable names like Ben Folds and Keith Urban stepped up to save the iconic studio Throughout the film there is much information about the fight to keep the Exit/In out of the hands of Live Nation. But Live Nation bought Ticketmaster and, as one executive told the owner of the venue, “In 10 years we’ll control the business from the top to the bottom.” There are those who are fighting to save the stages. Jeff Syracuse, a BMI executive, is a City Councilman who is well aware of the competition for space in Nashville and how new talent is struggling to find a launching pad amongst dwindling indie clubs. Mike Curb, Chuck Elcan, Chris Cobb, Representative Johnny Garrett (R, Goodlettsville) are all shown working to pass a state-wide live music fund, the first in the nation, that would help struggling indie venues. The legislative move seems to be meeting some success by film’s end. Near the end of the film Chris Cobb (last owner of the Exit/In) is awarded the Blayne Tucker Advocacy Award for his work with Save Our Stages. I’ve never heard of Blayne Tucker. But I related to the talking head in the film who said “Money is gonna win a lot of the time.” CONCLUSION CONCLUSION Patrick Sheehan, Stephen Thompson, Ian Criswell (Cinematographers/Director) and Michael Gomez (Photography), with editing by Sheehan have done a great job with the film. It sounds very familiar to an Austin (Tx) resident to learn that the music industry is not a straight-arrow biz. But it does have people within it who really love what they do and want to preserve music culture in their city for all the right reasons. And then there are the others who just want to make as much money as they can as fast as they can; they don’t seem to care about anything else. The creators of “The Day the Music Stopped,” both in front of and behind the camera, who compiled this engaging documentary, obviously do care. With this documentary they hope to preserve the true spirit of Nashville. “The Day the Music Stopped” is a sobering look at greed spurred by the competition for space in Nashville. I hope those fighting the good fight catch a break in their ongoing struggle. Stay tuned for further developments in Nashville and nationwide. The documentary will screen at the Nashville Film Festival on September 20th. Read the full article

7 members plotting against the ACC. The observations.
So it just broke that 7 members in the ACC have been talking secretly about how to escape the ACC and the ACC’s Grant of Rights deal. (They signed that deal in 2016 after adding Notre Dame as an Olympic member with a football scheduling alliance.)
This means a lot, but what does it mean?
I think it says that everyone in College Football realizes that this, the last round of musical chairs, begun by the University of Texas, is underway.
Florida State started talking about how unhappy they were last year right after ESPN and FOX “overpaid” the Big 12. FSU makes essentially the same money as the Big 12 schools. As UCF, $20+M less annually than their rival the University of Florida and all the crap bottom feeding schools in the SEC and Big Ten.
I think you can take FSU’s public protests as them shouting at Notre Dame, “Hey We are no longer happy with this status quo. If you want to jump ship, we will back your play!”
SEC
There was a rumor in realignment circles last year that the SEC’s end game move was to take total ownership of the the deep south recruiting grounds for all time by adding Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, Duke, Clemson, FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech and Tulane to form a conference with 25 members. That would prevent the Big Ten from growing that big and having that membership would prevent the Big Ten from dictating the direction of college athletics.
It would also give the SEC near total control over recruiting, not just the dominance they have today. It is a believable scenario from an SEC member desire perspective...but does it work financially?
Take a look at the nation’s recruiting hotbeds.
It seemed a crazy rumor at the time, but this could easily be that move coming into action, with the SEC replacing Duke with a more SEC-like school in NC State is athletically more SEC in character.
If you take the 7 schools as 7 schools colluding to potentially dissolve the ACC and join the SEC as a group... as some realignment followers suspect, it is troublesome news.
ESPN
ESPN has long manipulated schools under their umbrella. ESPN doesn’t LOVE the ACC. They love FSU, Miami, Clemson, UNC and Duke.
ESPN doesn’t want to move those schools to the SEC and overpay those schools at SEC rates --- while keeping the rest of the ACC leftovers in a hobbled conference at historic rates.
If those 7 schools are working collectively at the direction of the SEC schools for bulk admission, it is ENTIRELY possible that ESPN is the ultimate puppet master, thinking they would rather see the ACC disbanded, nullifying their agreements, and just take the SEC money and pay their cherry picked ACC superstar schools SEC money, knowing that the there will be settlements that have the ACC haves making the ACC have nots more or less whole.
Now, lets play that out. That leaves a TON of good basketball schools to join the Big 12 as either full members or specifically basketball only members. Not Olympic-only members. Paid to play basketball and then go the hell away.
ESPN partners with FOX to pay the Big 12 bill. How many slots would they authorize for the Big 12?
The Big 12 is already now the nation’s premiere basketball conference.
Imagine them with Louisville, Duke, Wake Forest, UConn, Boston College, Pitt, and Syracuse? Imagine a Big 12 where 70% of their schools make the tourney every year and where they produce 2-3 of the number one seeds!
That is a conference that can make money off basketball hand over fist to help offset their media money deficit and become the undisputed 3rd and final power conference.. The Big 12 seems to be chomping at the bit for this.
And where does the PAC stand? Forgotten. A lesser MWC in basketball. A football conference with a total inability to recruit and a perchant for sending football teams with limited depth to get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
And the crazy thing? It could be worse than that. The Big 12 is talking to their media partners a lot. The Big 12 Might START by adding San Diego State and another western basketball school...Gonzaga? Arizona? UNLV? What then for the PAC?
(I should note that it is wildly assumed by Pac leaders that SDSU will wait until the apocalypse for an association with Stanford and Cal. Accurate in this environment? Who can say. The train is rolling out and people tend to panic.)
That is just one of many scenarios this explosive revelation could deliver.
The bottom line: Get off your ass, Pac-12.

𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮!
—asks received between Sept. 1 and Sept. 16.
anonymous asked: My all time favorite concept is cuddly Stands. Wingman Stands. The ones that figure out that I like someone and then proceed to act on it. I can just picture sitting there, beating down my feelings for Polnareff or Kakyoin and all of a sudden, my Stand just starts nuzzling into their neck and we make direct eye contact. I start trying to apologize but my Stand just keeps hugging and kissing them. I firmly believe someone (probably Joseph) would tease me about it. 😂🥺
AHHHHH I LOVE THIS!!! stands are basically a shadow of yourself sooo 👀 I think Silver Chariot and Emerald Splash would be flustered. especially Chariot; Polnareff acts suave but I like to think that the moment his flirting is returned the man just shuts down. Emerald Splash would handle it a lil better, but Kakyoin is doing everything he can to downplay the situation. you? like him? ugh, that’s unimaginable. although he’d tease you about it, that pink blush is unmistakable.
anonymous asked: Ight, concept time. Im in college for massage therapy, and we spend a lot of out lab time massaging one another (and it's soooo niiiice. My touch starved quarantined ass LOVES it.) Anyway. Now I can't get it out of my head of treating my faves to a nice massage. Ceasar and Joseph after training. Literally all of the Crusaders, especially sweet Polnareff. Using swords is tough work! Id love to help him relax. (Something tells me Joot wouldn't want to cooperate. No matter. I'll massage Star. 🥰)
omg that sounds amazing! I’m so envious.... can I come to your massage therapy class? anyway, I think all of them would appreciate it! some would be more excited than others (Joseph, Polnareff), but most would be super hesitant (Caesar, Avdol, Kakyoin) or would straight up reject you (Oldseph, Jotaro). just put those hands to work and they’d melt to your touch. they’d be in the middle of protesting and the moment u so much as pinch their shoulders they just go “hhhggghh... nice......” (Star would be your best client, he’s so happy to have any sort of attention from you 😊)
💘 anon asked: 😔😔i’m here to openly confess my love for pannacotta fugo, i’m gathering my brain cells to write you good concepts but for now, i wanna give him a hug and tell him it’s okay and purple haze isn’t that scary bc have you seen a depressed bitch’s dirty ass room before?? that’s scary purple haze ain’t nothing (ps i’m bitch)
PUT THOSE BRAIN CELLS TO WORK, GIRL. I WANT UR BEST CONCEPTS!!!
hmmm... it depends on the situation on whether or not Fugo would accept your words. if you’re just coming up to him out of the blue, I think he’d brush you off. but if you’re calming him down after an outburst and you’re persistent about talking with him, he’d be much more receptive. he’s so lost and so, so scared yet having you here, holding him, would remind him that not all things in the world are terrible. although he still doesn’t think he deserves you, he’s glad that you’re here nonetheless.
just a soft anon 💖 asked: Bro. I'm taking my fine art entrance exams tomorrow morning and I'm 😃 afraid because it's gonna be my third attempt and I can't stand the idea of spending another year of my life on prep for that stupid school. I just hope Mista would be proud of me. Ftuefhsjjagj anyway I hope you're doing ok Toya bby
just a soft anon!!! I’m so sorry about the late reply! but I know you put your best effort in your entrance exams and I’m so proud of you for getting it done and over with 💕 please let me know how you did!
Mista would 100% be proud of you! he’d be waiting outside of the entrance, and the moment he sees you come out, his face would just light up. he’d be so proud of you for finishing your exam. and even if you’re not sure of your results, he’d pick you up in a giant hug and tell you that those admissions directors would be stupid to not accept you. I hope you’re ready to celebrate by going to your favorite restaurant, courtesy of Mista himself!!
anonymous asked: Not a request but I like to think despite appearances, Risotto likes playing cute games. Imagine his s/o showing him Pitter Patter Pop and gushing over how cute his character is. (I know Pitter Patter Pop is a Jojo game BUT LIKE. THE GAME IS SO CUTE.)
LMAOOO. it probably starts as something he plays to pass the time. like, Formaggio has been raving about it for a week now, what’s the harm in downloading it? but then it turns into a minor obsession. wow. this game is pretty cute. but what’s cuter (and funnier) is seeing Risotto show you his phone and say, “[Name]. look. they got all my poses down."
anonymous asked: Concept: Going in for a hug with Polnareff except you both lean your heads the same way and accidentally kiss 😳😂 (alternate answer, i can totally see this happening with Joseph) (I've literally done this on accident before lmao)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Polnareff would be so embarrassed! he’d immediately pull back, eyes wide and a hand over his mouth. how he’d respond after that relies entirely on you. if you’re embarrassed too, he’d try to change the subject to diffuse the situation. if you’re into it, however, Polnareff would waste no time going in for another smooch 👀 gentler, this time. and correctly!
anonymous asked: But just think GoT universe and Ris is a targaryen. Uffff he has a sword forged from the blood of his enemies and an armour of leather and steel, and he rides into the battlefield on his massive dragon Metallica, and his king's guard's leader is Prosciutto Lannister and Ris has an alliance with the northern lord bruno stark. ufffff...
my knowledge of GoT is super limited but! imagine Risotto’s skin stained with blood and dirt. his breathing heavy and rugged. his eyes vermilion, as red as the fire that burns behind him. his muscles ache and his mouth is dry, but he’s not done with battle. not yet, at least. Prosciutto watches as Risotto advances. his armor is as beaten as his king’s, and though he’s capable of assisting Risotto, he merely places a paper rolled with fine tobacco in his mouth. he knows that this this the king’s fight.
anonymous asked: I can't imagine the circumstances, but I like to imagine Risotto teasing his s/o by holding stuff over their head (for example, the t.v remote). Maybe s/o wants to watch a certain movie but he doesn't want to lmao. Alternatively maybe they'll try to wrestle the remote from his hand but he's just sitting there, chilling while his fingers won't budge at all--
omg.... yes...... I think he’d do it with a super blank expression too. like he’s amused, he just won’t show it. the most you’ll get is a quirked brow. sometimes you see the slightest hint of a smile, and you can’t help but smile yourself. you know that action is reserved for you and you only. also his just sitting there, chillin, while his s/o tries to wrestle the remote from his hand is CANON u can’t convince me otherwise.
#risotto nero#jean pierre polnareff#noriaki kakyoin#guido mista#panacotta fugo#💘 anon#anonymous#just a soft anon 💖#concepts#there's been a lot of Risotto yearning on here lately 👀#it's ok#Risotto yearning is valid

This Week Within Our Colleges: Part 23
A University of Virginia student urged white people to leave the campus Multicultural Student Center, claiming that it is a “space for people of color” and that there were “too many white people” in the building. “If y’all didn’t know, this is the MSC and frankly there’s just too many white people in here. This is a space for people of color. So just be really cognizant of the space you’re taking up, because it does make some of us POCs uncomfortable when we see too many white people in here. Frankly there’s the whole university for a lot of y’all to be at and there’s very few spaces for us. So keep that in mind.“ The student received a round of applause, of course.
Texas State University now requires students studying to become teachers to complete a series of assignments on “whiteness.” The assignments asks students to “analyze the construct of whiteness and its relationship to privilege and equity for students” and to make a “detailed analysis of whiteness” by defining the term and providing examples. The guide suggests using other keywords to talk about whiteness, such as prejudice, race and discrimination.
Princeton University and Brown University announced that they have eliminated standardized testing requirements for graduate admission in the name of creating a more diverse student body. Princeton announced its decision to do away with the standardized test, calling it “biased against minority groups.” They insist that scrapping the requirements will help Princeton achieve its goal "diversifying their undergraduate populations.” Brown University announced a similar initiative, eliminating GRE requirements to "attract a wider pool of applicants” and “reduce barriers that discourage some students from groups historically underrepresented.” They join Cornell University who dropped the same requirement from its biomedical engineering program over concerns that such requirements "can be biased against” women and minorities.
The California State University-Chico State Faculty Association released a statement assuring the student body that it is aware of what it characterized as the harm caused by a Republican group on campus, calling President Donald Trump a “symbol of insult, derision and ridicule of specific groups within our society” and urged the administration to take disciplinary action. “We take this stance because students of color have expressed that they are experiencing an increasingly hostile racial climate, both on and off-campus, since President Trump took office. It is unjust for students of color to experience overt and/or covert forms of racism ideologically, systemically, and/or in practice.” Ironically, look at what conservative students have to deal with at this school: 1 / 2.
University of Notre Dame held a forum where panelists urged the university to pay reparations to blacks and native Americans. They discussed how black and indigenous communities have a “right” to pursue reparations at Notre Dame and these reparations must be paid in cash. They called it “appropriate remedies” for Notre Dame for the people who have been “historically robbed of their right to a safe and secure life.” “We must acknowledge how white institutions contribute to black disadvantage and commit to the appropriate remedies.” “Everything at this school is extremely white” and “for every dollar earned, the moral debts have accumulated. The debt is accruing exponentially day by day.” Other suggested “remedies” included hiring a chief diversity officer, providing free tuition to native students, increasing diversity and inclusion programming, replacing white professors teaching native American studies with native professors and flying a native flag at all Notre Dame events.
Also at University of Notre Dame, students demanded that courses be reworked to reduce the number of reading materials penned by white, male scholars in an effort to “eliminate the violence of only privileging white scholarship.” “No course or program of study should have a view limited to white, western, and/or male voices. We demand that people who are of Color, Indigenous, Black, queer, or not male are represented in the authorship of at least half course and major required readings.” They also demanded the school’s policy that permits students from entering opposite sex dorms after midnight on weekdays and 2am on weekends to be removed as it enforces “white, cis-heteronormative hegemony.”
A University of Georgia professor states white teachers need to get some anti-racist therapy. “It may sound counterproductive” to require teachers to engage in anti-racist practices but these educators need to know that “their students’ traumas are a direct result of oppressive systems and ideologies.” “Yes, educators who are people of color feel the ever-present pain, weight, and torment of racism and need therapy, too, but White teachers have a different task: Many must first win the fight regarding racism within themselves.” “We need school therapists and counselors who are trained to help White educators and students process their emotions and their fragility.”
Loyola Marymount hosted an “anti-racist” meeting that seeks to educate and support white-identifying employees in their battle against racism. The Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere describes itself as a white affinity group “that supports white faculty and staff in deepening our learning about the impact of systemic racism on individuals, institutions, and society.” “The focus of the group is to develop the capacity of those who identify as white to participate in challenging conversations about race or racism without expecting people of color to be educators.” White members are encouraged “to grow and learn without further burdening people of color” with their “inevitable mistakes.”
Boise State University also rolled out new white guilt meetings, with a “book circle” for faculty and staff focused on white privilege in an attempt to “dig deep into ourselves to explore the ways in which we all, as individuals, sometimes unknowingly, support racism and white supremacy.” The book circle is hosted by the Gender Equity Center and is centered on the book “What Does It Mean to Be White?: Developing White Racial Literacy” by Robin DiAngelo, a “white fragility” expert who speaks at college campuses nationwide. "The primary audience of this book is people who are interested in unpacking white identity and how white folks distance themselves from conversations about race, as well as learning how to engage white folks in recognizing their privilege.”
Williams College students launched a boycott of the entire English department, claiming the curriculum is “whitewashed” and its scholars “racist.” Their main complaints include allegations of microaggressions, a curriculum that prioritizes white authors and claims that professors of color are not given enough praise. They demand the chair of the department be fired and replaced with someone specialized in Ethnic Literature, that four new faculty specialized in non-white literature are hired and that the department is investigated to stop the “harm” that’s being inflicted on “the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of both faculty and students of color.”
Harvard University students have promised “daily escalation” if their demands for the school to divest from fossil fuels are not met by Earth Day. The students took over a building after previously staging mock oil spills, shutting down speeches by the university president and interrupting football games. Less than one percent of Harvard students and faculty have signed the group’s petition.
San Diego State University held a “Pronouns 101” workshop where students were advised not to use the word “guys” when addressing a group of people, and call out those who do, and instead use terms such as “y’all” or “folks.” Another option was “beautiful people.” Students were then showed a massive list of pronouns that should be learned. They were also advised to always tell people of what our pronouns are when introducing ourselves, even if they coincide with the gender we were born with. “Referring to somebody with the wrong pronouns can make them feel just gross, it’s just disrespectful and it makes people feel invalid or invisible, and dismissed, alienated, dysphoric, and a bunch of unpleasant things.”
Evergreen State College’s Writing Center informed tutors to not teach proper grammar to students in the country illegally over sensitivity concerns. “Tutors are there to provide culturally sensitive feedback on writing, not to correct grammar.” The two flyers attached to the memo also advised educators to encourage their students to avoid using “hurtful language,” such as “illegal,” in order to be inclusive to illegal immigrant students.
A group of students at Syracuse University have now spent over a week occupying an administrative building, refusing to move until their demands are met. The sit-in, led by a black student group, have made numerous demands, including the right to have a roommate of the same race, a required curriculum on “anti-racism,” and the resignations of Syracuse President Kent Syverud and other officials. The students are now complaining that they’re being denied their human right to be fed and taken care of during their own protest.
Tulane University’s student government approved an “equity fee” where students must pay a $240 increase on existing student fees to fund more support for “marginalized” students. “The liberation of our most marginalized students will only strengthen our university and create a better environment for all who aspire to earn a degree from Tulane University.“ “There are some Black women who tirelessly organized and researched and put their hearts into writing a piece of legislation that attempts to rectify the historical wrongs of this university built on the backs of enslaved Black people.”
Wake Forest University will cancel classes in April so professors can attend diversity and inclusivity training. The lessons will include helping with the “anxieties” of educators when shifting to more diverse and inclusive teaching, appreciation for the structural challenges students of color encounter when addressing bias incidents, motivating girls of color and underrepresented groups to pursue STEM, creating identity-affirming classroom learning environments for racially and ethnically minoritized students and to help the professors “uncover” their own biases. The school also began offering a “Beyond Whiteness” course in an effort to "address historical complicity with systems of white supremacy" and the “damaging tendency to focus on white scholars and perspectives in studies of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.”
Macalester College stripped the name of its founder from a building on campus after students discovered he had referred to Indian tribes as savages in an 1882 book about Minnesota’s colonial history. Edward Duffield Neill was a pastor, historian and author, founded the college and served as president for ten years.
University of Maryland was the latest school to take a strong stance against costumes deemed to be guilty of “cultural appropriation,” warning students that costumes referencing other cultures have “no place in an inclusive community.” Students were told to ask themselves, “Did people from the other culture represented by the costume endure negative experiences that people from your culture have not?” They go on to suggest only “historically dominant groups” can be guilty, adding that “the differences in social and institutional power result in reinforcement of already-existing inequality.“
Ball State University hosted a presentation on “how English language practices in college classrooms contribute to white supremacy.” “We are all implicated in white supremacy,” the speaker said, “this is because white supremacist systems includes reproduction of dominant, white, middle-class, monolingual standards for literacy and communication,” which means “your school can be racist and produce racist outcomes, even with expressed values and commitments to anti-racism and social justice.” "Grading is a great way to protect the white property of literacy in schools and maintain the white supremacist status quo without ever mentioning race.”
The College of New Jersey hosted a white privilege event where participants were asked to close their eyes and answer if the fifty white privilege examples applied to them, based on activist Peggy McIntosh’s “Unpacking the White Knapsack.” White participants were asked to think about how the presence of privileges had benefited their lives, while people of color were asked to think about the negative impacts of not having the same privileges. Students also discussed their feelings of privilege in a group after the activity, with the goal of understanding who must be held responsible in eliminating oppression.
Michigan State University student government voted to ban cafeteria trays in an effort to help the school become more eco-friendly. “MSU prides itself on sustainability” but until now, it lacked this “key policy.” The bill further aims to help shape student diets, stating “reducing tray usage would improve the health of students by encouraging conscious portion sizes.” The resolution criticized the “astronomical” amount of animal products consumed and demanded more vegan and vegetarian options. It also asked for compost bins in all residence and dining halls.
Santa Barbara City College students protested the conservative student group Turning Point USA being recognized as a campus club. The protestors cited its potential presence on campus as “a direct threat to our student democracy,” they also accused Turning Point USA of “targeting” African Americans and compared the club to Nazi Germany.
University of Massachusetts-Amherst advertised to students how they can earn credit for “organizing” for “social justice.” “Do you have a passion for social justice? Do you want to make a difference?” Students will earn five-course credits by getting involved in grassroots community organizing and learning how to “act in effective and complex solidarity with communities organizing for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.” It also refers to “the issue for the left” as being “how do we get from where we are today to where we want to be in terms of making our marches blacker and browner.”
A Baltimore County high school compared Trump’s immigration policy to Nazis and communism as part of a class lesson in history. Staying on Trump, a University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center professor said he is "mentally impaired,” “cannot think normally, “is dangerous,” and has the “early onset dementia in an elderly, out of shape, obese male." A Rutgers Universitywomen’s and gender studies professor tied racism and President Trump’s policies to black female obesity. “I hate when people talk about Black women being obese. I hate it because it becomes a way to blame us for a set of conditions that we didn’t create. We are living in the Trump era and look, those policies kill our people. You can’t get access to good health care, good insurance. She also claimed the increased stress of being black is responsible for the difference in metabolism between whites and blacks.
Grand Valley State University voted to stop reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at its Student Senate meetings, arguing it’s non-inclusive and represents an oppressive government. “The arguments to remove it were to create an inclusive environment, that it represented an oppressive government, and that there are international students that we should be representing.” The University of Oklahoma student government also voted to scrap the pledge.
A professor at University of Florida told students to not use the terms ‘illegal immigrants,’ ‘illegal aliens,’ or ‘illegals’ when writing their assignments about migration, despite ‘illegal alien’ being the legal term for any person unlawfully in the U.S. The professor instead says it’s a “slur,” linking a CNN article to prove it. He also warns his students that they will receive zero points if any of their work is disrespectful, offensive, or contains "slurs.”

But I related to the talking head in the film who said “Money is gonna’ win a lot of the time.” CONCLUSION CONCLUSION Patrick Sheehan, Stephen Thompson, Ian Criswell (Cinematographers/Director) and Michael Gomez (Photography), with editing by Sheehan have done a great job with the film.

They fought slavery, prejudice, and injustice — and changed the face of medicine in America. They invented modern blood-banking, served in the highest ranks of the U.S. government, and much more. In honor of Black History Month, read the inspiring stories of 10 pioneering black physicians.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD (1831 — 1895)
In 1864, after years as a nurse, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree. She earned that distinction at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts — where she also was the institution’s only black graduate. After the Civil War, Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with other black doctors who were caring for formerly enslaved people in the Freedmen’s Bureau. While she faced sexism and other forms of harassment, Crumpler ultimately found the experience transformative. "I returned to my former home, Boston, where I entered into the work with renewed vigor, practicing outside, and receiving children in the house for treatment; regardless, in a measure, of remuneration," she wrote.
Crumpler also wrote A Book of Medical Discourses: In Two Parts. Published in 1883, the book addresses children’s and women’s health and is written for “mothers, nurses, and all who may desire to mitigate the afflictions of the human race.”
Note: No photos of Rebecca Lee Crumpler are known to exist.
James McCune Smith, MD (1813 — 1865)
James McCune Smith, MD, was a man of firsts. In 1837, he became the first black American to receive a medical degree — although he had to enroll at the University of Glasgow Medical School because of racist admissions practices at U.S. medical schools. And that was far from his only groundbreaking accomplishment. He was also the first black person to own and operate a pharmacy in the United States and the first black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals.
Smith used his writing talents to challenge shoddy science, including racist notions of African-Americans. Most notably, he debunked such theories in Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia. Smith was a staunch abolitionist and friend of Frederick Douglass. He contributed to Douglass’ newspaper and wrote the introduction to his book, My Bondage and My Freedom.
Leonidas Harris Berry, MD (1902 — 1995)
Even as a renowned gastroenterologist, Leonidas Harris Berry, MD, faced racism in the workplace. Berry was the first black doctor on staff at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, in 1946, but he had to fight for an attending position there for years. “I have spent many years of crushing disappointment at the threshold of opportunity,” he wrote to the hospital’s trustee board committee in his final plea, “keeping my lamps trimmed and bright for a bride that never came.” He was finally named to the attending staff in 1963 and remained a senior attending physician for the rest of his medical career.
In the 1950s, Berry chaired a Chicago commission that worked to make hospitals more inclusive for black physicians and to increase facilities in underserved parts of the city. But his dedication to equity reached far beyond the clinical setting: He was active in a civil rights group called the United Front that provided protection, monetary support, and other assistance to black residents of Cairo, Illinois, who had been victims of racist attacks. In 1970, he helped organize the Flying Black Medics, a group of practitioners who flew from Chicago to Cairo to bring medical care and health education to members of the remote community.
Charles Richard Drew, MD (1904 — 1950)
Known as the “father of blood banking,” Charles Richard Drew, MD, pioneered blood preservation techniques that led to thousands of lifesaving blood donations. Drew’s doctoral research explored best practices for banking and transfusions, and its insights helped him establish the first large-scale blood banks. Drew directed the Blood for Britain project, which shipped much-needed plasma to England during World War II. Drew then led the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and created mobile blood donation stations that are now known as bloodmobiles. But Drew’s work was not without struggle. He protested the American Red Cross’ policy of segregating blood by race and ultimately resigned from the organization.
Despite his renown for blood preservation, Drew’s true passion was surgery. He was appointed chairman of the department of surgery and chief of surgery at Freedmen’s Hospital (now known as Howard University Hospital) in Washington, D.C. During his time there, he went to great lengths to support young African-Americans pursuing careers in the discipline.
Louis Wade Sullivan, MD (b. 1933)
Louis Wade Sullivan, MD, grew up in the racially segregated rural South in the 1930s. There, he was inspired by his doctor, Joseph Griffin. “He was the only black physician in a radius of 100 miles,” Sullivan said. “I saw that Dr. Griffin was really doing something important and he was highly respected in the community.”
Over the decades, Sullivan became an equally profound source of inspiration. The only black student in his class at Boston University School of Medicine, he would later serve on the faculty from 1966 to 1975. In 1975, he became the founding dean of what became the Morehouse School of Medicine — the first predominantly black medical school opened in the United States in the 20th century. Later, Sullivan was tapped to serve as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he directed the creation of the Office of Minority Programs in the National Institutes of Health’s Office of the Director.
Sullivan has chaired numerous influential groups and institutions, from the President’s Advisory Council on Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the National Health Museum. He is CEO and chair of the Sullivan Alliance, an organization he created in 2005 to increase racial and ethnic minority representation in health care.
Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD (b. 1939)
In a pivotal experience while working as an intern at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1964, Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD, admitted a baby with a swollen, infected hand. The baby suffered from sickle cell disease, which hadn’t occurred to Gaston until her supervisor suggested the possibility. Gaston quickly committed herself to learning more about it, and eventually became a leading researcher on the disease, which affects millions of people around the world. She became deputy branch chief of the Sickle Cell Disease Branch at the National Institutes of Health, and her groundbreaking 1986 study led to a national sickle cell disease screening program for newborns. Her research showed both the benefits of screening for sickle cell disease at birth and the effectiveness of penicillin to prevent infection from sepsis, which can be fatal in children with the disease.
In 1990, Gaston became the first black female physician to be appointed director of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care. She was also the second black woman to serve as assistant surgeon general as well as achieve the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service. Gaston has been honored with every award that the Public Health Service bestows.
Patricia Era Bath, MD (b. 1942)
Interning in New York City in the 1960s sparked a revelation for Patricia Era Bath, MD. Bath, the first African-American to complete an ophthalmology residency, noticed that rates of blindness and visual impairment were much higher at the Harlem Hospital’s eye clinic, which served many black patients, than at the eye clinic at Columbia University, which mostly served whites. That observation spurred her to conduct a study that found twice the rate of blindness among African-Americans compared with whites. Throughout the rest of her career, Bath explored inequities in vision care. She created the discipline of community ophthalmology, which approaches vision care from the perspectives of community medicine and public health.
Bath blazed trails in other ways as well, co-founding the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in 1976, which supports programs that protect, preserve, and restore eyesight. Bath was also the first woman appointed chair of ophthalmology at a U.S. medical school, at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine in 1983. And she was the first black female physician to receive a medical patent in 1988 for the Laserphaco Probe, a device used in cataract surgery.
Herbert W. Nickens, MD (1947 — 1999)
As the first director of the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1986, Herbert W. Nickens, MD, set the foundation for promoting improved health among racial and ethnic minority populations across the country. When he left the HHS, Nickens moved to the AAMC, where he was the founding vice president of the AAMC Division of Community and Minority Programs, now known as Diversity Policy and Programs. He led Project 3000 by 2000, which the AAMC launched in 1991 to achieve the goal of enrolling 3,000 students from underrepresented minority groups in U.S. medical schools annually by the year 2000.
“No one in recent memory did more than Herbert Nickens to bridge the painful and persistent diversity gap in medicine," said then-AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, MD, after Nickens’ death in 1999. The AAMC continues to remember Nickens’ legacy with three namesake awards, honoring outstanding medical students, junior faculty, and individuals who have made significant contributions toward social justice in academic medicine and health care equity.
Alexa Irene Canady, MD (b. 1950)
Alexa Irene Canady, MD, nearly dropped out of college due to a crisis of self-confidence but ultimately went on to achieve dramatic success in medicine. In 1981, she became the first black neurosurgeon in the United States, and just a few years later, she rose to the ranks of chief of neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
Canady worked for decades as a successful pediatric neurosurgeon and was ready to retire in Florida in 2001. But she donned her surgical scrubs once again to practice part time at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where there was a dearth of pediatric neurosurgery services. Canady has been lauded for her patient-centered approach to care, which she said was a boon to her career. “I was worried that because I was a black woman, any practice opportunities would be limited.” But, she noted, “by being patient-centered, the practice growth was exponential.”
Regina Marcia Benjamin, MD, MBA (b. 1956)
Regina Marcia Benjamin, MD, MBA, may be best known for her tenure as the 18th U.S. Surgeon General, during which she served as first chair of the National Prevention Council. The group of 17 federal agencies was responsible for developing the National Prevention Strategy, which outlined plans to improve health and well-being in the United States.
But it’s not just her work at the highest levels of public health that earned her praise. Long before she was appointed “the nation’s doctor” in 2009, Benjamin worked extensively with rural communities in the South. She is the founder and CEO of BayouClinic in Bayou La Batre, Louisiana, which provides clinical care, social services, and health education to residents of the small Gulf Coast town. Benjamin helped rebuild the clinic several more times, including after damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and a fire in 2006. Of the clinic, she said she hopes that she is “making a difference in my community by providing a clinic where patients can come and receive health care with dignity.”
