one of my favorite things about watching subbed anime is seeing all the fucked up ways they choose to translate itadakimasu into english
#i've seen 'down the hatch' multiple times and *extremely loud incorrect buzzer*#dig in? maybe. bon appetit? possibly. let's eat? maybe the most innocuous.#since there's not really a social equivalent in english any one thing you choose to use may be viewed as a catch phrase#if you change the translation depending on the context (dig in for informal and bon appetit for formal) you might get away with it?#maybe the best thing to do is omit it altogether and hope the audience understands the word isn't easily translatable#at least in terms of its purpose as a social convention#this is my first time watching anime after having taken a translation class and i'm having the time of my life#anime subs should come with translators notes
