May the days be aimless. Let the seasons drift. Do not advance the action according to plan.
— Don DeLillo; White Noise
June Reads!
A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers — 4/5: a friend recommended this one to me as kind of a mix between Hannibal and American Psycho with a female protagonist which got me hooked. it definitely delivered on that regarding the plot and food-motif (?). the food descriptions were definitely very beautiful and the protagonist compelling. liked that she was telling her story from prison. only thing was that some of her inner monologue came across a little ‘girl boss-y’ at times which I found corny but maybe that’s just me. I guess you’re allowed to be a bit of a corny #girlboss when you’re literally eating men
The Hauntings of Playing God by Chris Dietzel — 2.75/5: this one was kinda meh? was very excited about the concept (last ‘living’ woman on earth left to care for her patients who’re all suffering from locked-in syndrome (ig?) left to make tough choices) but it just didn’t deliver. it got kinda repetitive towards the middle and could’ve done with some shortening for sure imo. also a little too kitschy in some parts for my taste.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy — 5/5: even better than expected! I had high hopes for this one and it didn’t let me down! not only is McCurdy’s story incredible and gripping but she’s also a really talented writer.
White Noise by Don DeLillo — 5/5: read this for the first time last year and suddenly got this intense craving to re-read it; turned out I liked it even better the second time round! this one truly has it all: coming to terms with mortality (and failing badly), portrait of family life and marriage, critique of consumerism and modern life, there’s an airborne toxic event, it’s a great satire overall, yet its so earnest at the same time and treats its characters with such fondness and care; such nice structure of the novel too. would recommend this to everyone
Idol, Burning by Rin Usami — 3.75/5: short and bittersweet! a story of an obsessive fan of a j-pop idol; the way she devotes herself to studying her idol as the rest of her life falls apart around her — really enjoyed the contrast between her absolute focus and dedication to her idol and how she struggles in her regular life, school and work especially due to her (probable) learning disability. some passages really hit home for me
Severance by Ling Ma — 4.5/5: enjoyed this one a lot! liked how the narration went back and forth between the current “zombie” pandemic the protagonist is trying to survive (and the dynamic of her companions) and the years leading up to that point. it felt kind of like a coming-of-age story but in a settling into your adulthood kind of way? I liked that vibe and could definitely relate to it as well. also, always a fan of when stories give me the very beginning stages of apocalypses etc. the writing’s really nice too! def recommend

This image is credited to Miloslav Druckmüller, Peter Aniol, Martin Dietzel, and Vojtech Rušin. The website it comes from, which contains a TON of gorgeous high-res eclipse photography, can be found here: http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/Index.htm .
It's a whole big project, to try to capture and process high quality images of solar eclipses, and there are only a few minutes every year or two to do it.
Please try to include credit and source links when you post someone else's work. Even if you don't care about credit at all, it's really nice to be able to click a link and find more work from the same source!

The Law Of The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023
By Hannah Dietzel, Liberty University Class of 2023
December 3, 2023
Tumblr media
New legislation called The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023 hopes to change judicial exceptions to what can and cannot be patented. In order to truly understand what the nature of a patent is, we must define what a patent is and how to acquire one. A patent is an exclusive right given to an inventor in regard to his or her invention. This right allows the inventor to have sole ownership of the invention for distribution purposes. In order to acquire a patent, various steps need to be taken. From decided that the patent is needed to providing evidence that the work is original and yours to the application where information is disclosed, a lot of work goes into getting a patent. Judicial exceptions to what can be patented are in place mostly due to the nature of whether or not the thing in question is a discovery or an invention. The difference between the two is that discovery is about new factual information and invention is about new creative information. This is what the act intends to address if it is passed.

The Invitation to Invent
By Hannah Dietzel, Liberty University Class of 2023
December 2, 2023
Tumblr media
Inventing new products and processes can take years of work, countless trial runs, and failed tests. So, when you do get to the point where your invention is in accordance with your intent, you’ll want to keep it yours. After all, it was you who put the work into it, why should anyone else be allowed to distribute your work as their own? This protection lies in the form of a patent. A patent is a right exclusively given to an inventor to ensure that they have the sole ownership of the product or process they have invented.
You might think that every invention gets a patent, but that isn’t true. First, “To get a patent, technical information about the invention must be disclosed to the public in a patent application.” World Intellectual Property Organization, Patents, https://www.wipo.int/patents/en/. When talking about processes and products, they reside in the area of utility patents. These are just one type of patent, but they are the most common. Securing a patent when it is brought to the court system can be difficult because of judicial exceptions. Judicial exceptions apply to all inventions that fall outside of the four categories of invention. These are “process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter” The United States Patent and Trademark Office, https://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/mpep/s2104.html#:~:text=The%20judicial%20exceptions%20are%20subject,Alice%20Corp. Defining what can be patented is important, but when does it go too far?
The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023 seeks to broaden what the United States courts will deem eligible for a patent. One of the changes this legislation proposes to make to the judicial exceptions held currently is to the area of processes that are, “substantially economic, financial, business, social, cultural or artistic.” Crowell, The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023, https://www.crowell.com/en/insights/client-alerts/patent-eligibility-restoration-act-of-2023what-in-house-counsel-need-to-know#:~:text=Essentially%2C%20the%20Bill%20is%20trying,intelligence%2C%205G%2C%20and%20blockchain. It may sound strange that something like an economic or financial process needs to be patented, but it can be quite important. One of the main reasons that new legislation is being proposed is because of the fact that these processes can be patented in other countries, but not in the United States which holds back the country’s development in those areas.
When it comes to acquiring a patent, the steps that need to be taken to secure a patent can take a while to get squared away properly. There are many steps that you will need to take to acquire a patent and once you have determined that it is indeed a patent that you need, you need to determine if your invention has already been invented somewhere else, and if not what type of patent you will need. Most patents fall into the utility category, like certain products or processes. These are the types of patents that the Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of of 2023 is not as concerned with. The act is fixed more on the smaller areas that can be hard to prove as an invention such as a stand-alone mathematical formula, or something that is naturally made such as an element in nature. These things are judicial exceptions.
When we think about the time and effort and originality that is put into inventing something, we see why these things are exceptions. They exist more in the realm of discovery than invention. The difference between the two as defined by Webster is such, the act of discovery is obtaining knowledge on a subject for the first time, and inventing is the act of producing something for the first time by the use of the imagination. Obtaining knowledge means that the knowledge was already there, and did not have to be thought up, and producing that knowledge means that a creative process in the mind was involved. Judicial exceptions have their place, and the Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023 has been proposed to challenge them. In conclusion, the act seeks to broaden the horizons of what can revive a patent, but the question to be asked is if it is necessary. Do the ideas that do not get patented now fit within the definition of an invention? You will have to watch the progression of the legislation to find out.

Dietzel quotes it by considering the Coulombs potential/ field, as per earlier articles in the BlogSpot, we are familiar about the relationship upheld by the Hooke’s law, and on similar grounds what makes this complex relationship simple is explained by Dietzel.

Where are cutlets 1.0 BTW?
Oh man this is as good a time as any to say that I have some good and some bad news about them.
So for context Kotelet came into my house with two kittens (and pregnant but that was a surprise for later) who were very wild and on the cusp of the socialisation window. I made some progress with food and then my partner Danny took them in.
Now the bad news, one of them got out. They were very small and very wild and one of them got out trough a vent-thing that Danny didn't realise was accessible. We never found him again. It was quite frustrating to deal with after weeks of working to get them into the house, but in the end we had to take solace in that they were outside before, but now at least he had the foundation of human socialisation, so he has a chance of becoming a pet still. So it's still a net postive even though we of course wished he'd stuck around to see how nice it could have been, because...
The good news:
Say hi to Dietzel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Danny managed to completely win over this boy, with a frankly criminal amount of candy. These are taken from their lap. It's safe to say he's happy to stay.
I've been wanting to post pictures but everytime I felt a bit sad to adress the other kitten first, but now enough time had passed that I can get it over with, and I have so much more to share.
