We are in the early part of June, and at the time of writing this blog, Gillingham have made four signings, Striker Elliott Nevitt, Central Midfielder Armani Little, And Wingers Jack Nolan and Aaron Rowe, And looking at all four signings, Elliott Nevitt, Armani Little and Jack Nolan were offered new contracts by Crewe Alexandra, AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley respectively, And it is important to mention that in Jack Nolan’s case, Gillingham will need to pay a compensation fee to Accrington Stanley, And Crewe Alexandra were hoping to sign Aaron Rowe on a permanent basis following his release from Huddersfield Town, because Aaron Rowe spent last season on loan at Crewe Alexandra, and one of the reasons why Gillingham perhaps were able to sign Aaron Rowe, is because Rowe lives in London, and geographical location was perhaps a contributing factor into how Gillingham were able to sign Aaron Rowe ahead of Crewe Alexandra.

And regarding Jack Nolan, Gillingham have signed a player who scored seventeen goals and created thirteen assist’s last season, and looking into Jack Nolan’s stats on a deeper level, 382 crosses last season, which averages out to over ten crosses a match, 140 dribbles, which works out to almost four dribbles per match, and Key Passes eighty five, which works out to over two key passes per match, and these stats were achieved for A Accrington Stanley Side who finished seventeenth in League Two, and there were a few supporters of lower league sides thinking Jack Nolan would have signed for A League One Side, so by all accounts, Gillingham have signed a very good player, who also has room to grow and develop into a better player as well.

Gillingham have a total of fifteen out-field players who count towards the twenty two over twenty one rule, so Gillingham can sign seven out-field players over the age of twenty one without deregistering anyone from the first team squad, and this rule, the twenty two over twenty one rule is a very new rule which has only been operating for two season’s now, is a rule that all clubs in League One and League Two have to pay close attention to, in The Championship, clubs can have twenty five out-field players who are twenty one or older, Goalkeepers are exempt from this rule, and players under the age of twenty one do not count towards this age restriction, so don’t have to be registered in the squad.

But with Scott Malone, George Lapslie, Ashley Nadesan and Oli Hawkins all under contract, and Gillingham unclear on the future of Dom Jefferies, that’s five players who if all added to the squad will take Gillingham up to twenty out-field players who qualify for the twenty two over twenty one rule, and Gillingham would be close to the limit, and this might be why Gillingham need Scott Malone, George Lapslie, Ashley Nadesan and Oli Hawkins to all move on to other clubs, not only to get the four players in question off the wage bill, because Mark Bonner doesn’t believe that all four will be getting much game-time for Gillingham next season, but also, to create space in the squad to sign over-aged players who are perhaps going to be more best suited for the way that Mark Bonner wants to line up next season.

And all four players are very good footballers, and George Lapslie and Oli Hawkins in particular were part of the squad that saw Gillingham retain there Football League Status, but if Mark Bonner is looking to sign players to fit into the systems and formations that he wants to play, then it is understandable why all four players are surplus to requirements, but there could also be a situation where not all four players move on and could still play a crucial role for Gillingham Football Club In The 2024 / 2025 Season

SO WHERE DO I THINK GILLINGHAM NEED TO STRENGTHEN THE SQUAD ???

I am going to make the assumption that Scott Malone, George Lapslie, Ashley Nadesan and Oli Hawkins will all leave Gillingham Football Club, and Dom Jefferies turns down a contract extension and opts to sign for another football club, which means that plenty of additions need to be added to the squad, in addition to Gillingham signing Elliott Nevitt, Armani Little, Jack Nolan and Aaron Rowe.

I think Gillingham need to make sure that almost everyone of those positions are covered for both the twenty two over twenty one rule, but also, make sure that all position’s in the squad are covered to ensure that Gillingham have got depth and quality right the way through the squad, so that Gillingham have got quality players in the starting eleven, quality players on the bench, and quality players outside the match-day squad as well, this is what Mansfield Town, Stockport County and Wrexham had in there squads, all three teams achieved automatic promotion into League One because they had quality players right the way through the squad, and that is what Gillingham need to replicate this summer heading into the 2024 / 2025 season, and when Gillingham were promoted as League Two Champions, Martin Allen could make five or six changes to the starting line up without there being any drop-off from the players who were rotated in and out of the starting line up.

I think Gillingham need to sign two wingers to provide cover and competition with Jack Nolan and Aaron Rowe, With Mark Bonner looking to line up with wingers for the 2024 / 2025 season, it’s important that Gillingham have got four quality wingers, two on the right, two on the left so that not only do Gillingham have quality players in the starting line up, but there are attacking options on the bench who can be game-changers who can turn a loss into a draw, or, a draw into a win, and this was something that Gillingham lacked at times during the 2023 / 2024 season, and hopefully, Gillingham can continue to addd to the squad, especially in the final third of the pitch.

I also wouldn’t rule out Gillingham signing one or two wingers who are similar to when Gillingham signed Ethan Coleman, Jayden Clarke and Ike Orji, players signed more as longer term signings who can still be in evolved with the first team as and when required to do so, and maybe the two winger suggested signings are players who can play for Gillingham in Kent Senior Cup and Football League Trophy Games, it’s a long season, you are going to get injuries and suspensions, and the last thing Gillingham want to happen is for Jack Nolan and Aaron Rowe to get injured, and we have two players who can step into the starting line up, but there are no attacking players who can be promoted on to the substitutes bench to provide additional cover.

If Ashley Nadesan and Oli Hawkins both leave, then Gillingham need to sign another striker, and maybe two strikers, but maybe one of the strikers is also a winger who can play anywhere out-wide and up-front just to provide Gillingham with some versatility, and a left back will also be needed if Scott Malone leaves Gillingham Football Club, and another midfielder with similar attributes to Armani Little, maybe someone younger with those attributes and a player who understands they are signed as understudy.

So all in all, I think Gillingham need to sign the following……..

Four Wingers - Two for the first team, two who might be more longer term signings

Two Strikers - One of the strikers in question could be a player who doubles up as one of the wingers and can be a versatile utility player, but Gillingham do need to sign another striker as cover and competition with Elliott Nevitt and Josh Andrews

A Left Back

A Central Midfielder

Squad depth is important now more so then ever, it used to be the case that two in each position and one or two for additional cover and your squad is set for the start of the season, But nineteen of the twenty four clubs in League Two had squad sizes of twenty five or higher last season, including Gillingham, who had a first team squad of thirty players, Wrexham and Forest Green Rovers had the join mist with thirty two players, and those two sides had completely opposite season’s, Wrexham achieving promotion into League One, Forest Green Rovers getting relegated into The National League.

So it will be interesting to see where Gillingham strengthen the squad between now and the start of the season, how many players are signed, and which position’s in the squad get strengthened, and I think even with the signings of Jack Nolan, Aaron Rowe and Elliott Nevitt, Gillingham will still be looking to strengthen the squad in the final third of the pitch, lack of goals scored has been a problem for the past three season’s, it’s a stat that needs improving on if Gillingham want to challenge for promotion, and I don’t think we are finished when it comes to incoming signings for attacking players.

I have spoken about Gillingham signing someone who can play out-wide and up-front and Mo Eisa who has been released by MK Dons could be a player that fits that description, MK Dons releasing Mo Eisa is certainly surprising, but Eisa is a player with ability, he can play on either flank or play up-front, and he is one possible signing that Gillingham could make between now and the start of the season.

But the work Gillingham have done in the transfer market is very impressive, all four signings strengthen area’s of the squad that need to be strengthened, and it be interesting to see what Gillingham do next in the transfer market, which could be dependent on out-going departures to create space in the squad for incoming signings.

Robert Covington is the NBA role player every team needs

The Wolves are a different team with Robert Covington.

Why Covington’s 3-and-D skill set fits anywhere.

With a dry understanding of his new team’s offensive plays, defensive concepts, and no expectation to even start, Robert Covington played 41 minutes in his first game with the Minnesota Timberwolves. “I thought that I was gonna ease my way into it and learn the system,” he laughs. “But Thibs wasn’t having that.”

As teammates shouted instructions from the bench, Covington scored 13 points in a seven-point win. There was no pressure to finish plays that were designed with him specifically in mind because those didn’t exist. Instead he played off instinct and adrenaline, confident in a skill-set that can fit just about wherever it goes and take advantage of opportunities that materialized organically.

A knee injury ended Covington’s 2018-19 season on New Year’s Eve. But in 22 games he played before that the Wolves were 12-10 with a top-five defense. He’s still confident they would’ve made the playoffs had he never gotten hurt. It was an experience that sums up what Covington is, and why, assuming he can stay healthy, very good teams won’t think twice about trading for him this season. This is the NBA’s most amicable role player, someone serviceable enough to nudge one championship contender ahead of the next, a neat complement on both ends who’s seemingly more useful in games played at the highest level than for an organization that—3-0 start and all!—is more focused on incremental growth.

Last year’s Wolves expected to see the postseason. This one does not. The only player with more NBA experience than Covington—who turns 29 in December—is Jeff Teague. There’s a new front office, too, one that insists they view him as a part of their present and future.

His on-court influence hasn’t hurt. Covington has spent almost every minute of this season at the four beside Karl-Anthony Towns, providing Minnesota’s franchise player with all the spacial benefits he’s never really had. It’s early, but the combination of that shift—away from bigs like Taj Gibson, Gorgui Dieng, and Kevin Garnett to someone who’s both more comfortable behind the three-point line and a great defender—plus Ryan Saunders’ new five-out offense has turned Towns into the MVP candidate he’s destined to be. That’s what Covington does: let superstars be great.

He’s a streaky outside shooter with a green light from 30 feet who drilled 40 percent of his catch-and-shoot tries last year. Covington knows his team isn’t winning a bunch of games if he’s the one taking a majority of their shots, though. He’s more like a necessary threat who opens everything up for Minnesota’s actual first and second options. But when the ball isn’t coming his way, Covington is also smart about making himself available. He finished in the 95th percentile on cuts with the Timberwolves last year. In Minnesota’s new offense, he’ll have plenty of opportunity to hit gaps when the defense doubles Towns.

The other end is his bread and butter. Covington is long, smart, and pesky enough to disarm the league’s most explosive scorers. Three years ago, he finished fourth in Defensive Real Plus-Minus. Two years ago, he made First-Team All-Defense. He pressures offenses into feeling like their entire goal is to escape his team’s vice grip instead of executing a plan to score against it. A big test this year will come against teams with bulky frontcourts, your Indiana’s, Detroit’s, Philly’s, and Los Angeles Lakers’ of the world. Covington needs to battle bigger players, then slide out onto quicker guards without experiencing the fastball-to-knuckleball vertigo that such immediate change can cause. On a team that wants to switch one through four as much as they can, Covington flashed his worth in a recent game against the Miami Heat.

This seems minor, but the result isn’t a coincidence. The goal of every defensive possession is to keep the offense from doing what it wants to do, and in snuffing Tyler Herro out as he curls around a DHO (dribble hand-off), that’s what Covington does. “He has a defensive component and is a defensive identity guy,” Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders said. “And so guys can’t help but come with it a little more when he’s out there.”

There are limits to Covington’s game. He doesn’t handle the ball, create for teammates, or draw fouls. But all that is fine so long as his surroundings allow it to be. In a league that’s drifting from specialists to generalists—those who can defend multiple positions, shoot threes, and extemporize off the bounce when a situation calls for it—Covington’s on-court value is steady. Off the court, it blooms.

In a universe full of iron-willed ego and self-belief that borders on fantasy, no locker room is always happy. A never-ending battle between altruism and greed is at all times set on a low boil. Some players are content with what they have. Most want more. They drain energy from others instead of adding to the greater good. Covington is more part of the solution than a problem. He organizes card games, understands and acknowledges his spot on the team’s pecking order, and knows how to negotiate with strong personalities without stepping on toes. Covington says what needs to be said, and people listen when he does.

“He’s a guy who comes into the locker room and has an energy and an aura about him that everyone loves,” Towns said. “It helps a lot, all of us, just pick up our energy, pick up our intensity.”

But until the trade deadline passes, there’s an unspoken dilemma Covington faces every day. It’s difficult to settle into a new environment, invest time, and develop chemistry with teammates when the possibility of a move looms overhead. Covington dealt with it two summers ago, when the Sixers were rumored to involve him in several blockbuster deals, be it for Kawhi Leonard or Jimmy Butler. That, plus a knee injury that wasn’t getting better, sent Covington into a dark place he’s just emerging from now.

His focus today, understandably, is on the Wolves. He doesn’t discuss trade rumors with anyone in his private life, and spends his free time with a book instead of a cell phone or television. “I’m just trying to train my mind to do something different,” he said. “I don’t want to be just sitting on the couch in front of the TV all the time. I want to be learning stuff.”

So far, the organization and him are on the same page. Privately, they believe Covington can help point them in the right direction. The front office and coaching staff has told him how much they admire his personal story, and appreciate what someone from The Process 76ers can bring to a young, impressionable roster that needs to know how to attack every day. He matters in Minnesota.

But if/when this team starts to struggle, offers for Covington will be made. He’s “only” guaranteed $36.4 million over the next three years, which makes him all the more attractive, and there aren’t many players with his skill-set that could be available in February. “In a way,” Saunders said. “[Covington] is something every team looks for.”

Again, he fits just about everywhere. Pick a contender, or even a team that wants to make the playoffs. Guys who don’t need the ball to positively impact games are increasingly important in a season where so many stars are spread around. He would help Houston, Los Angeles, Utah, Denver, Portland, Dallas, Golden State, Boston, Toronto, and several other cities I’m forgetting to mention.

Even if the Wolves fall out of the playoff race, though, moving Covington won’t sit well with the most important person in the organization. “He’s probably one of my closest friends,” Towns said before a season-opening win over the Brooklyn Nets. The days of upsetting a franchise player like Michael Jordan by trading Charles Oakley for Bill Cartwright are long over. Moves like that are no longer made without careful consideration from the star it affects. Unless Gersson Rosas is willing to bet he can win a championship before 2024, when Towns’ current contract expires, placating his star at every turn is a top priority.

As one league source put it: “Towns is looking at a productive 3-and-D guy who can help him win games and you’re saying ‘Oh yeah, well we’re gonna get this young unproven guy or future first-round pick, or both,’ and he’s kind of like...that’s a tricky balance.”

None of that may ultimately matter if Minnesota is somehow able to sustain its hot start, but assuming they slow a very complicated situation is on the horizon. Either Covington digs in and becomes a key part of a franchise that’s desperate to move in the right direction, or a contender makes an offer Rosas can’t refuse, even with the risk of alienating his superstar. It’s a tough decision that reflects how fickle the NBA truly is. For this season’s landscape, it also shows how pivotal Covington can be.

Dieng, Eropanya Indonesia (Part 1)

Liburan ini menurut gue adalah salah satu destinasi yang istimewa di tahun 2018 karena gue, Kevin dan temen-temen kita akan naik ke Puncak Prau. Karena kita nggak cuma berdua, disini juga ada Timmy (Temen SMA gue dan Kevin), Ersol (Temen Kuliahnya Timmy) dan juga Bang Hendor (Temennya Ersol waktu naik ke Gn. Lawu)

Sesungguhnya disini gue lagi dalam kondisi yang nggak terlalu fit karena baru balik dinas dari Manado. Kita berangkat di tanggal 16 Agustus 2018 dari Pasar Senen naik Kereta Kutojaya Utara. Perjalanan dimulai jam setengah 6 dan ditempuh selama 5,5 jam. Disini kami berangkat bareng Timmy dan juga Ersol karena Bang Hendor nyusul naik motor dari Jogja. Sekitar jam 11 akhirnya kita sampai di Stasiun Purwokerto. Karena belum sarapan, kami sarapan pecel di deket stasiun. Ternyata disana banyak juga pendaki yang entah baru mau naik atau lg turun makan disana. So far, makanannya enak, tempatnya nyaman. Tapi satu hal yang agak menganggu. Ada mas-mas yang maksa banget buat naik grabnya dia buat ke Wonosobo. Dan setelah kami hitung-hitung harga yang dikasih masih lebih mahal dibanding kita naik bus karena kami juga cuma berempat, mungkin kalo ber delapan atau ber sepuluh masih masuk harganya. Akhirnya kami sepakat pergi ke terminal, naik bus aja. Untuk menuju terminal, cukup bayar sekitar 5000 per orangnya. Sampai di terminal, banyak pilihan bus. Dari yang mahal sampai yang murah. Kita tentunya ambil yg murah dongg ya (hail murah!) jadi dengan harga 35.000 aja kita bisa sampai di wonosobo. Terus dari wonosobo itu kita harus naik bus lagi sampai di alun-alun dieng. 💸💸💸 Gokil sih ini busnyaaaaaa, ngepot sana sini dan dia sempet main cilukba sama penumpang, padahal penumpangnya nggak ada yang bisa tenang satupun. Disinilah gue melihat kasta emak-emak naik matic kalah sama bus. Syedap. Pas udah lewat Banjarnegara, udah agak tenang karena itu udah setengah perjalanan. Kami udah pesen ke keneknya untuk berhenti di tempat bus-bus ke dieng itu berhenti. Dan akhirnya penderitaan kami dalam 2 jam berakhir. Kami sudah sampai di tempat pemberhentian bus dieng. Naik bus dari wonosobo ke dieng itu sekitar 20.000 satu orangnya dan sekitar 1 jam perjalanan. Nggak terlalu terasa, akhirnya kami sampai di alun-alun dieng. DINGIN CUKKKKK. Asli kami sampai itu sekitar jam 2 siang an dengan suhu 14 derajat. Kalah AC kantor kalian guys.

Karena Bang Hendor masih dateng di esok harinya, kita akhirnya nginep di salah satu hostel kece di Dieng. Namanya Tani Jiwo. Disini ada penghangat gitu di living room, ada tempat nongkrong, sharing kitchen, tapi jangan harap ada AC nya disini. Nggak akan berguna. Kami ada di satu kamar sharing dengan private bathroom dan hokinya, nggak ada orang lain di kamar kami. WUUUU.

Ketika malam tiba dan perut udah laper, dingin-dingin kami cari makan. Yang ada di pikiran cuma ada nasi padang. Udah bayangin nasi panas, ternyata ga cuma udaranya yg dingin, nasinya plus lauknya juga gengs. Ntaps. Setelah makan, kami memutuskan untuk balik ke hostel untuk setting kamera buat foto stargazing dan juga istirahat karena harus simpan tenaga buat mendaki besoknya. YAY!
