the other day I had the realization that I.... do care if people use formal pronouns with me or not. like on a conceptual level I don't like them but if they're a part of the language system and within that system people are supposed to refer to me by them and they don't that's hmm...

#I was talking to someone who's older than me but always uses formal you in writing #and they kinda messed up a few times using informal you in person #and idk I just felt like.. you grew up in this system you should be able to use formal you when it's called for #like if you call everyone else by formal pronouns why is it hard to remember to do that to me too?#something something being a young woman #idk the fact that I care about this was a fascinating revelation to me I've been learning languages w formal pronouns for 12 years #and I've always been of the opinion that it's fine to use informal you with me #lmao not that anyone whould use formal you with a 12 year old but you know...#didn't care even in recent years not when I lived in Venice etc #but now apparently I do idk I just want to be treated like everybody else #but I also do think I'm reading too much into this haha the person in question is almost close enough in age that in another situation #informal you would've been fine #oh well oh well languages are fascinating <3 #snicksnack
