Avengers: Endgame Backlash

Ok, I don’t normally get involved in fandom discourse because I don’t like arguing with people on the internet, but I’ve seen so much negativity going around about Endgame’s ending as well as negativity towards the directors and writers and I refuse to hold my tongue any longer. I know I’m going to get absolutely shit on by Tony stans for this, but I’m irritated. 

Yes, it’s tragic that Tony Stark died, and yes, it’s heartbreaking that he only got a short moment with Peter before he died. I’m absolutely heartbroken over Tony’s death, as well as heartbroken for Peter. They’re two of my favourite characters. 

That being said, saying that The Russo Brothers, as well as Markus and McFeely have no right to even be in the entertainment business because of the way they chose to end Tony’s arc is excessive. Saying they need to lose their jobs and be kicked out of the movie making industry for the way they chose to kill a fictional character is not only childish, but it’s rude to say about four people that have given us four fantastic marvel movies that they spent years of their lives on, and put their blood, sweat and tears into. 

They are comic book fans and have been their whole lives. They love these characters as much as we do. All they’re doing is their best to create a story that satifies as many people as they possibly can. And yes, that means that there are going to be some people that will not like the ending they chose. That does not mean that we’re allowed to attack them online, call them horrible names, and demand they fix what they’ve done. 

Tony Stark has had 3 solo films, and 5 team up movies (6 if you count homecoming) worth of character development. Do you really think the decision to kill Tony Stark was one they took lightly? He’s the most beloved character of the MCU. Not only that, but The Russo Brothers and Markus and McFeely didn’t call all of the shots here. Kevin Feige is the head of Marvel Studios, and he’s the one who gets the final say on who dies, who lives & what happens in the movie. Kevin Feige is the one who tells them ‘okay, this is what I’m thinking we do’ and then they have a discussion about it and make the decisions TOGETHER. This is not all on the Russos and the writers. 

As for the complaints about Thor’s character, I’m just going to say one thing, because I do not want to interject my opinion on how Thor was handled in the movie. But like I’ve said above, this entire movie and how the characters were handled is not all on the Russos and the writers. Feige was involved, as were Taika and Hemsworth. So to everyone out there that’s saying Taika needs to take the character back and fix it, Taika was heavily involved in where Thor’s character went in this movie. Hemsworth has said in multiple interviews that he and Taika sat down with the Russo’s and Feige and came up with the plan for where Thor was going to go in this movie TOGETHER. They wanted to make sure that the Russos version of Thor was something they all wanted, and they wanted to see how far he could be pushed. That was something Hemsworth himself said that he AND TAIKA both wanted. And again, saying a character needs to be handed back to a different director because you didn’t like the way something was handled is rude and disrespectful. There are millions of people who love these movies. Not everyone is going to be satisfied. 

As for the two petitions that are going around, I’m sorry, but no, I will not sign them. Tony died for a reason. They wouldn’t just kill off the most important character in the MCU for no reason. He died sacrificing his life for the rest of the entire world. Reversing his death and bringing him back not only cheapens the way that he died, but it makes the sacrifice kind of meaningless. Creating a petition for them to refilm the ending to arguably the biggest movie of our generation, is rude and it’s disrespectful to the film makers and the story they told. 

As for the other petition about a Peter/Tony show, I will say a few things. 1) The Disney streaming shows are being created to allow them to shed some light on the characters that have been pushed to the side for the last ten years. To finally allow the characters that have been ignored for years a chance to get some actual character development. Tony has had 9 movies worth of character development. Peter is in the middle of his own trilogy, and will likely be sticking around for team up movies in the future. Let the side characters have their day in the sun instead of demanding a TV show based around two characters that are already/have already been given their own arcs in the movies. 

2) All of the people that are saying ‘well Loki got his own show because people weren’t happy about his ending, so why can’t we get one with Tony because we’re not happy’. No. Loki did not get his own show because people were angry about the way he died. Loki got his own show because he’s never been a titular character in a movie, he’s been a fan favourite character since 2011, and ALL of his character development has directly revolved around Thor since the first Thor movie. People have been asking for a Loki solo movie since his first appearance in Thor 1, instead, he got a show. 

3) I’m about 95% sure that Tom Holland’s contract between Marvel and Sony wouldn’t even allow for a show anyways. The deal is that all Spidey content where he’s a titular character is paid for, distributed by, and that Sony gets all earnings from the content. A Disney streaming show would not only be paid for by Disney, but it would be distributed by them, and the people who are watching it will have paid Disney for that content, not Sony. 

4) Let Peter be his own person without his story revolving around Tony Stark!!!! Yes, Tony was like a father to him, and of course that relationship is important. But as of right now, almost all of Peter’s character development has either been a result of, or directly related to Tony Stark. Let Peter learn what it’s like to be his own person. Let Peter figure out who he is without the help of Tony Stark. Yes, I’m heartbroken about Tony’s death for Peter. But I’m also extremely excited to see Peter without Tony. A fully developed character’s entire story arc should not revolve entirely around another character. Peter should be more than just his relationship with Tony. 

5) Let RDJ fucking rest please????????? He’s been the central character of the MCU for ELEVEN YEARS. He’s played Tony Stark in at least a cameo in ten marvel movies. That’s almost half. He last played Sherlock Holmes in 2011, and they’ve been trying to film a another for like seven years and haven’t been able to because of Marvel. Let him branch out and play other characters than just Tony Stark. Let him do nothing if he goddamn wants to!!!! He sure as hell has earned it if that’s what he wants to do. He has young kids under the age of 8, and he spent a literal year in Atlanta filming A3 & A4. Let him move on from Tony Stark and do other things with his life. 

Yes, you’re absolutely allowed to be angry about the ending. You’re allowed to hate infinity war, or endgame, or the entire mcu if you very well want to. But spreading nothing but negativity towards the Russos and the writers, and demanding that they refilm a movie, or change the ending to a movie that they’ve been planning for like, SEVEN YEARS, is not only rude, but it’s disrespectful and I’m sure it’s not making anyone who worked on the film feel very good when there’s this kind of backlash. 

I know I’m going to get shit on for this opinion, if anyone even bothered to read this entire behemoth of a post. But I’m tired of seeing nothing but hate towards the creators of this film that was made for the fans. Regardless of whether you disliked the ending, this movie absolutely was made for the fans. It was filled with endless amounts of fanservice moments, and every single callback to a previous moment was done for us. And I for one am grateful that we so much as got this movie made, not to mention had such wonderful moments.

The last plague of Egypt, the black death, the Merchant of death and then Iron Man, these are just a few of the names man kind has given him over the time his has walked among them but because of encounter the team will finally see and know him for who he really is....Tony Stark is the Angel of death.

So I don’t know what this is but its a somethin! Also, ironstrange, because they’re cute. And Stephen is Time personified (and Asian, as usual when I write him- with a Nepali background though he would have existed long before that. And his form isn’t concrete because you know. Time). Bonus points for Nebula & Tony bonding!

Tony is used to the dark, sticky feeling that clings to his every move and has for as long as he can remember. He doesn’t remember a time before this, though he’s been reliably informed that time has always existed in some form or another. Tony sees him as a man, tall, tawny skin and a sharp smile that matches his wit. Stephen tells him he looks different to different people, or at least he thinks he does given that people always seem to describe him differently. Time period tends to be a factor but he has no idea why people perceive him in the ways they do. There’s no pattern to it.

Tony knows what his true of his form looks like even if Stephen is a shapeshifter, moving with the time and place he’s in. He’s pale, with dark hair and eyes that he supposes are fitting for the personification of death. He thinks he looks like a corpse but Stephen says he’s pretty, striking even. Tony thinks he’s only flattering him. Still, he’s used to the feeling in the pit of his stomach when something is about to happen and he’s been feeling it for years. In this life he tried to blend in with people though he should have known it wouldn’t go well. Last time he tried he killed most of Europe and chose to stick around and make friends, and then the rats started carrying disease. Poor things, they haven’t recovered from the backlash to that. But its not like humans know he’s the cause.

Still, he tries to warn people but they don’t listen. And why would they? They have no idea who he is, minus Stephen. He’d recognized Tony right away the same way he’d recognized Stephen. Its not often they run into powerful beings like themselves- even Thor��doesn’t really measure up though it’d been Loki who knew something was off when his scepter didn’t work on him. The stones don’t hold the kind of power over him that they do over a mortal. Its why Stephen has such an easy time with the time stone, aside from being the personification of the concept. Ideally Tony would have the power stone, it would work best with his innate abilities, but that has been lost for some time. Though the soul stone remains even more lost than that.

“What is it that you sense?” Stephen asks, curling an arm around him from behind. Tony leans into him relaxing in a way he rarely can with anyone else. Typically, he’ll keep his power close, held deep in his body in a controlled way that’s more to save other people than himself. If he wanted, he could kill someone with a simple touch. Sometimes he does, if the person is suffering greatly. He doesn’t enjoy it but people deserve dignity in their last moments and he tries to give that to them the best way he can.

He sighs, fingers curling into Stephen’s. “Death,” he murmurs and Stephen sighs.

“Don’t be edgy Tony, and tell me what’s got you so on edge. You’ve sensed it for some time, but in the last few months you’ve been restless,” Stephen tells him.

Interesting, considering he’s felt no difference. “I’m not being edgy, I’m telling you what I can feel. Something is coming, and whatever it is there will be destruction like we’ve never seen before.”

“We’ve seen extinction,” Stephen says, “it can’t be worse than that.”

“Of one planet,” Tony says. “This… this will be everything.” He risks a look up to Stephen, has expecting his reaction to be similar to the Avengers. But they don’t know who he is and what he can do. Stephen does, and the fear in his expression reflects his knowledge of Tony’s predictions. He holds on to Tony a little tighter but he doesn’t need to. There aren’t many things that last forever, except Time and Death. Things don’t stop because planets do, and there’s always something that is ready to die, even if its just the stars. They’ll always be together, but that isn’t a comfort when that’s all they have.

When Nebula lands Tony senses her presence, perhaps because death clings to her almost as tight as it does to him. She finds him surprisingly fast, or maybe its Stephen’s ability to portal around that helped them find each other as fast as they did. Nebula looks him over, head tilted to the side for a moment. “Thanos is coming,” she tells him and the hair on the back of his neck stands straight up.

He looks to Stephen and he nods. “We’re in the endgame now,” he murmurs.

“Come with me,” Tony says, “and tell me about this Thanos.” Its no coincidence, Tony thinks, that he’s named after the Greek god of death.

Nebula watches the two of them talk, Tony and Stephen, but she senses more about them. Tony is more receptive to her, more willing to listen. Stephen mostly asks irritating questions and swats that tacky cape of his aside. When they separate Tony comes to her. “How much time do we have?” he asks.

She shrugs, “three days, if you’re lucky,” she tells him. Tony turns and nods to Stephen, who takes off presumably to die because no one will survive what’s coming. Not really. Thanos thinks his plan will save people, that Gamora’s home planet is a utopia. Bastard hasn’t even been back to it in ages. Its no utopia, its chaos, destruction. People fight each other for scraps and sometimes they simply use each other as food. If that’s utopian she’ll pass on it.

“What did he do to you?” Tony asks, drawing her attention outward again. When she turns to face him he looks sympathetic. “I can feel the way pain clings to you like a shroud. The way death seems to have become you.”

Nebula can’t help but let out a sharp laugh. “I’m barely even alive anymore,” she says, shaking her head. “If I lost a fight, he’d take a piece of me and replace it with machine. I almost always lost.”

Tony reaches out, settling a hand on her shoulder. He does nothing else, just lets the touch linger and its so foreign she almost expects attack. It doesn’t come, but its hard to let herself relax. “That sounds awful,” he murmurs but she shakes her head.

“Child’s play compared to the genocides,” she says and Tony’s eyebrows shoot up.

“Genocides?” he asks and she nods.

“Smaller planets first, they were easier targets. Less military force, smaller populations, usually lower species,” she says, rattling off the reasons easily now. She’s seen so many people die, killed so many herself, that she’s simply desensitized to the violence of it.

“He started doing more, the last ten years,” Tony murmurs.

“I don’t know how earth years work, but in the last seven years he’s moved on to medium sized planets. Gamora’s planet, mine. We were war prized, I think, because Thanos liked to fancy himself a father. He has a lot of us, all from the planets of the people he’s massacred,” she tells him.

Tony looks sick and he should. She should, but she can’t bring herself to feel that way. “Why here, why now?” he asks.

“He has the infinity stones now, two of them. Maybe three if Gamora leads him to the soul stone. Two more are here. Then he’ll take out half of all life, can do it with the snap of his fingers with power like that,” she murmurs. No one was ever meant to wield that kind of power.

Tony shakes his head, “he’s not going to get away with that,” he tells her but he’s a fool if he thinks this is a battle he can win.

Thanos lands two days later than what Nebula predicted and the Avengers are all shocked nonetheless. Ten years of warnings weren’t enough, apparently. Tony doesn’t know if he’s angry at them or if he’s angry at Thanos, if he’s mad at himself for not realizing sooner. All the gut feelings he had, the destruction he felt- must have been Thanos on those planets decimating them. He’ll pay for that too.

Stephen remains behind him, and the Avengers don’t know anything of his power either, but that’s for the best. Thanos thinks to address him first, eyes training on him fast but Nebula had warned him of his obsession with Death.

Pity they had to meet right before his funeral.

“I sense power in you,” he says. “Tony Stark.”

Behind him he can hear Stephen suck in a surprised breath but he hadn’t had the conversation with Nebula about Loki. She’d held a wealth of information and he thinks its helped her to talk about things out loud. “I heard you had an obsession with death, Thanos. What exactly is it that you want out of me?”

The Avengers shuffle around, confused, but Tony can sense that T’Challa understands him right away. But Tony is sure T’Challa is more than a man too and it wouldn’t be the first time a concept lost their memory. If Tony were to guess he’d say soul, or that’s what humans call it. The essence of all life doesn’t have a name between the rest of them but he suspects that’s what T’Challa is. Terrible way to find out what kind of power you hold, but he will have had to learn somehow at some point.

“This is for you,” Thanos says, lifting the gauntlet on his hand. “To show you my devotion.”

Tony lifts his nose in disgust, “if you wanted to show me devotion you would have left the natural order alone,” he snaps. “That isn’t for you to tamper with.”

Thanos looks confused for a moment, but seems to lose it fast. “This is my purpose, I know it is,” he says. “I ignored it once, and…” he trails off, surprising Tony with a look of pain not that Tony pities him any. Not after what he’s done. “I’m going to do this whether or not you want it,” he tells Tony.

“Then your purpose is to die trying to kill the thing you chose to worship. You can’t kill Death,” he says calmly.

Nebula knows when the blast is coming and her first instinct, surprisingly, is to jump to Tony’s defense. She’s surprised when the man in the panther-like suit holds her back. “He will be fine,” he tells her in a light, accented voice.

When the blast hits Tony she expects death, that’s the only thing that makes sense. But instead the purple from the power stone engulf him, swirling around him like an energy field and everyone, including the ridiculously dressed Avengers whoever they were, stares. The only ones who don’t look surprised are Stephen and the panther man. Thanos, shocked, stops trying to blast Tony and the purple lingers around him for a moment before its clear he’s simply absorbing the power from the stone.

Licks of purple flame or mist, she’s not sure, lick at Tony’s sides, swirling around his hands as he stands totally unaffected by the full force of an infinity stone. After a long moment he turns to her, eyes glowing the deep purple of the stone. “Come here, Nebula,” he tells her and she shakes her head, stumbling back a couple steps.

“Its alright,” the panther man tells her. “You’ll find what you want with him.”

Cryptic shit, she doesn’t know what that means. “Nebula,” Tony says to her. “You’ve earned this.” He nods to Thanos, who remains frozen and Nebula suspects there’s some magic happening even if she can’t see it, and then she understands.

“You’ll find what you need,” the panther man adds.

Yes, she will find what she needs. She steps forward, walking over to Tony with determination and only pausing when he holds out his hand. “Its okay. It won’t hurt you,” he tells her. Faith, she thinks, is a stupid reason to hold out her hand but she does. When the power of the stone fills her she gasps, Tony’s hand still tight on hers. “You earned this Nebula, for all he’s done to you,” Tony murmurs. “You have the power of an infinity stone in your blood. Make him pay for what he’s done,” he tells her.

All the being torn apart and put back together wrong with new parts, the fights, the favoritism, the torture, the genocides, Gamora. She can’t think of any one reason in particular as the power from the stone fills her body and mind. When she finally extends her hand she lets out a scream of pain and anger, but mostly its a scream of retribution.

April, You Will Be Remembered

It’s the 1st of May!! I want to post about some unforgettable April 2019 moments because I want to keep the memories that someday I want to remember again. So many things happened in the month. There were some heart-breaking incidents and of course there were some enjoyable moments as well. I’m just gonna highlight the things I want to remember the most. Here they are!!

BLACK HOLE

It is announced that on 10th April 2019 a group of scientist from the international Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) releasing the image of a black hole to public. This project was began in 2006. It took supercomputers, eight telescopes stationed on five continents, hundreds of researchers, and vast amounts of data to accomplish (source: the verge).

I was not someone who understands much about space life, even though I studied the basic knowledge when I was in secondary and high school. However, I appreciated a lot this not easy job. I used to have a dream to be an astronomer when I was a kid, but i have to come to realization that I’m not smart enough to pursue the dream, lol. I’m currently into astronauts’ life though. I watch documentaries, read articles and other sources about astronaut’s and space’s life. So that, it made me happy to read this news. Moreover, one of the computer scientists in the team who led the development program to get the first-image of black hole is a woman named Katie Bouman. She is just 29-year-old when she did that. She is amazing!! I always wonder what kind of method those people use when they are studying. I mean, how could they be so smart? I feel like I’m such a useless and stupid human being. I’m nothing huhu. Anyway, I’m happy to witness the history of the first image of black hole.

GAME OF THRONES

FINALLY, WINTER IS COMING. I might not be the fan of the show since day 1. I just started watching game of thrones in 2017. Ever since I watched the first season, I started becoming a fan and addicted to the show then finished all of the 7 seasons in a few weeks. The show is that addictive, it made me threw any dramas/movies for about 6 months because I felt that the show was too well executed and any other movies/dramas in that time period I was watching the show felt bland. I’m sorry, I didn’t intend to belittle other shows. It’s just the thing I felt that moment. I was so mesmerized by the storyline which literally beyond my expectation. It was so good. I know there are a lot of people who don’t like the show, and it’s okay as everyone has their own preference. But to me, this show is so far my very favourite one.

It took me 2 years to wait for the last season which is season 8 to be aired. I cant contain my feelings as I was so excited about this. AAAANNDDDDD IT’S FINALLY HERE. GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 IS HAPPENING. 14th April 2019 should be put as a history date as the show was aired on that day. Actually, I’m pretty sad that there will be just 6 episodes. I wish they make it to 10, but who am I to complain?

Okay, back to the show. The most talked episode is episode 3, the Battle of Winterfell, which was shown in that very episode. The episode lasts for about 80 minutes long. The thing that has been waited since season 1 was the war between the alive and the dead. There are so much reactions and opinions regarding the episode, fans are splitted into two groups, the one who enjoyed the episode and the one who disliked the episode as it didn’t reach their expectation. I’m the one who included to the first one, I pretty enjoyed the show although I think it wasn’t the greatest battle in Game of Thrones. My favourite battle was Battle of Bastards as it was really tensed. But, I still like the Battle of Winterfell though. As of now, I want to put aside the negativity and just enjoy the rest of episodes. I’m planning on reading the books after the show is over.

One thing that I really like about episode 3 is the hyped from the people who watched together in cafes, restaurants, and other place. Their reactions were priceless. See these videos that went viral on twitter!!

ELECTION

One of the most tiring to bear ever since social media era existed is election. The countries that pursue democracy usually conduct election to choose their own leader, including my country. In the past, there weren’t much sources to search about election information other than from tv and newspaper, so that the backlash could be reduced. But it’s different now. In this digital age, people can share everything including the positive and negative contents. Social media as one of the tools for people to do campaign and spread either good thing or black-campaign for the election candidates. ISTG, this is so tiring to witness people bashing each other and most of them have crossed the line. I’m so done!

In Indonesia, for 2019’s election, there were some changes compare to the previous election. They were included the period of time of campaign which was so long (about 7 months) and also adding the other 3 elections of legislative to be held in the same very day. It used to be held in different months, but due to the lack of participation in legislative election so that they were all conducted together.

I was eager for this to end soon. It finally happened on 17th April 2019. But, something bad happened again. The incident which happened in 2014 was re-enacted as both candidates claimed they win. Even though the quick count results from about 12 institutions showed that Jokowi-Amin led the vote by gaining about 54% votes while Prabowo-Sandi gained around 44% votes. I’m so done with this. I will just wait for the official results to be announced and I wish on that day there will be no chaos happen.

Aside of that, something that breaks my heart is there were a lot of election officers died and fell sick due to exhaustion from working way too hard as most of them working until very late night and some even worked until the next morning because there were so many jobs to do, including counting the vote for legislative elections (DPR, DPRD, DPD). Although there were no major incident happened during the election process itself, but still this thing supposed to not happen. There is definitely something wrong with the system and it should be fixed so that there will be no victims anymore.

MOURNING IN SRI LANKA

21st April 2019 is Easter Day. Things supposed to be calm and sacred on that day. But disgusting act ruined it all. Multiple bombing attacks happened in several places in Sri Lanka, including at churches and hotels. Hundred of people died and many people got injured. Some extremists claimed they are responsible for the attacks, SMH. I wish the ones who dead are resting in peace, while the ones who got injured will get well soon and receive some strength to continue life. and for the terrorists, I wish you die in suffer and go to hell!!

I don’t get why in 2019, hatred ideology is still growing fast in this world. Sadly, in some developed-countries which the citizen are more educated, this ideology also exist. People should learn that the differences that make this world beautiful. Why some people feel like they want to hurt each other just because they have differences in term of race, skin colour, religion, countries, ideology, etc. We need to respect each other differences as long as it doesn’t violate the rule of law.

I think there should be a formal lesson in school to teach students to respect the differences. Parents should teach their children right too. Sadly, I found a lot of parents who taught their children to hate people who are different from them. This needs to be stopped. Everyone deserves to get equal treatment. We all want a better future. We cant reach this as long as we still fight each other because of the differences. Just put aside it and look the bigger picture, the same goal we want to pursue. As of now, i’m kinda sceptical if we can reach peace in the near future. However, someday in the future, I wish the world will be a better place to live in. Amen

AVENGERS ENDGAME

Marvel fans have anticipated the final movie from Avengers United. They are excited as well as sad as the avengers series come to end. Avengers Endgame was screened since 26th April 2019 in my country. There were so much fans who purchased pre-order ticket in a few days prior to the movie screening. It’s kinda cray because the cinemas are full packed with the audiences. Most cinemas even dedicated all of their studios for this movie as the demands are very high then putting aside the other movies. I feel bad for the other movies as they didn’t get time slot for their movies in cinema because of Avengers movie. I wish this wont last long as other movies deserve to get screened as well.

Okay, back to Avengers Endgame movie. Just in March 2019, I watched Captain Marvel movie and in April, I got to watch the last movie of Avengers. I’m actually not a big fan of Superheroes movies, I’m just a casual viewer who enjoyed the movies and i enjoyed watching this one as well. Avengers Endgame runs for 181 minutes, it’s pretty long. I came to bathroom in the middle of movie though, lol.

Overall, I like this movie as I think everything was executed very well. The cinematography, the sound, the edit, the effect are totally top-class work as well as the casts and their act. It really gives everyone goosebumps during the war between Avengers United and Thanos and his soldiers. I couldn’t blink my eye any second because I didn’t want to miss anything. Even though, I felt like I wanted to go to number 1 again in the middle of war scene, but I held it until the movie was over, lol. The movie is worth the hyped though. It’s indeed a masterpiece. I think I’m gonna rewatch it later. But, first I need to watch several marvel movies that I haven’t watched yet so everything will connect and make sense as I still didn’t understand some part. Anyway, thanks marvel for presenting a very well done job!! Goodbye or See you (?) Avengers!!
