Song of the Week

Personal life note: I have been riding horses since I was 8 (yes, I was and still am a bit of a horse girl, don’t @ me). Y’ALL IT’S DECEMBER!!! Time for questionable and sometimes pretty good holiday songs from around the Korean music scene. Here is a comprehensive (as much as I can reasonably give) of the tracks from this week. The rest of song of the week will follow.

- welove Christmas by Grass and WELOVE. This is a sweet duet of both gendered vocals, and the whole thing feels like the warmer side of the holidays. It is a little too religious for my taste, but cute!

- When it Snows by Gukkuro Bird ft. Im Chaeeon, Lee Jungah. I’m a sucker for a driven ballad, and the little sleigh bells to make it fit the season are nice. It’s another nice duet.

- Starry Night - Kim Areum. By the numbers 90s Christmas song. I prefer the duets above.

- Last Christmas by Gavy NJ. Not a cover, but very in the tone for Korean Christmas songs. If you have heard a Korean holiday song before, you probably can imagine what this one sounds like.

Mmmh was not what I was expecting from Kai at all. It is a whole lot slower, and less totally dance driven. It obviously is a dance video, which fits his image well, but the sexy vibes, at least in this style, were not what I was expecting at all. I don’t mind it, but I don’t think it’s something I’m going to come back to.

NCT 2020 is too many boys. When you can’t have everyone in your set pieces because it isn’t feasible, it’s too many boys. That being said, there are parts of Resonance that I really like. The 1st verse (after the intro, because that’s a no from me) is solid. The chorus is not really my thing, and throughout the rest of the track, there are 8 bar, or 16 bar sections that I really like, and then others that I’m indifferent to. And finally, it’s a 5 and a half minute song that feels like a 5 and a half minute song. I can do long tracks if they keep the music tight, and pull me through. This doesn’t manage it for me. And I’m back to waiting to resonate with NCT again.

JB writes songs that fit GOT7 really well. Last Piece follows that trend. All of their voices fit nicely, Jinyoung gets used for his tone nicely, and all of the rappers get to do slightly more sung lines that are still heavily rhythmic and work for them really well. I also want to marry the director, because it, like Breath last week, had me interested throughout. And back to the song, the little rock elements fit into the synth heavy tone of the rest of the track well. It is another solid release from them.

For another cool video, but of a different type, Given-Taken is a strong debut showing from ENHYPEN. The song is an interesting choice for a debut as well, much moodier than is usually seen for a debut. It also makes them distinct from the rest of Big Hit’s artists, at least a little bit. My only hold back is that they are young. No 90s kids here, and the youngest is 15. I’m not sure how I feel about minors as idols. I didn’t like it when I was closer to them in age, and that hasn’t really changed as I’ve gotten older. Cool song though!

Musically, I really like the type of retro that Bbusyeo by ONEUS is going for. I think they fit the mood and style well, and it’s nice to have something so fun and uplifting in the winter (even if I would have preferred it as a summer release). But there is one thing stopping me. And it is the fact that I associate Bbusyeo with Jonghyun getting wrecked while Minho scream laughs in the background. And frankly that is so stuck in my head that I can’t focus on the good music happening. I’m too busy having a lovely SHINee memory

1. Mamamoo

Bias - Solar AKA my Ultimate Bias™

I love this group because not only is this group the first K-pop group that I ever got into, but they also have amazing voices and genuinely care for the lgbt+ community and poc. In regards to the event that occurred a while back where they covered a pitbull song during a live performance. They did darken their skin to look more like pitbull. They did not know that what they were doing was blackface as they are from South Korea and most likely did not know that this was a racist act and are very unfamiliar with racism specifically targeted towards black people. They have since formally apologised for the action and have promised that they will never do such a thing again. Since then they have performed onstage at a large awards show with drag queens, some of them being poc. This I believe shows that they truly are not racist individuals and made a mistake that they themselves cannot go back in time and fix. Again for the people in the back. Mamamoo is not racist. They made a mistake.

2. Blackpink

Bias - Lisa

Blackpink is also a group that is very important to me. Their music is amazing and their voices are spectacular. They are also very funny and their series Blackpink House is one of my favorite idol group bases reality shows.

3. Dreamcatcher

Biases - Gahyeon, Yoohyeon, and SuA

Another group that I absolutely adore. Their voices are amazing and their dance routines are showstopping. They don't change pronouns in covers either so they can stay true to the original artists.

Honorable mentions:

Red Velvet - A good group with some great everything. In my top 5 list. Simple as that.

eSNa - An absolute queen with killer vocals. Extremely underrated.

Taeyeon - Another queen with killer vocals. Great artist but Girl's Generation isn't that great. I'm glad that she was able to escape and release her full potential.

Taemin - SHINee will probably be the only boy group that I genuinely like. Taemin is my bias in that group and he is hotter than the fire of a thousand suns.

Gavy NJ - 3 great looking women with powerful vocals. Their group have had a not so great history and and aren't very popular. I believe that they need to re-debut under a new name, work on some more active choreography, and change up their style a bit.
