Types of Pressure meters and how they work
A pressure transmitter is a device used to measure pressure in gas, fluid or liquid. Most industries use pressure transmitters to measure the pressure inside the machinery in case of an impending catastrophe. You can quickly notice a pressure transmitter due to its round gauge, that comes with different colors to detonate the pressure levels.
You can also include other elements in a pressure transmitter’s gauge to enable it to measure more variables. These variables are; water flow, depth, pressure loss and altitude.
Pressure transmitters are crucial in production industries as they can keep the right pressure amount for production.
The working Principle of Pressure Transmitters
Pressure transmitters work on a simple, functional principle. The mechanical pressure value is converted into a proportional electrical signal by the pressure sensor. The sensor is made of a diaphragm and body. The diaphragm has a strain-sensitive structure called strain gauges.
Changes in pressure deflect or inflects the diaphragm and is passed to the strain gauge. The strain gauge converts the effects into measurable electric signals that are then transferred to the indicator.
Pressure transmitters are made to measure more than just pressure. You can easily include other elements to help in measuring factors like gas and liquid flow, and levels of open and closed tanks using a transmitter with gauge, absolute or differential pressure.
How does a Pressure Transmitter Work?
Pressure transmitters work differently. Generally, though, most of the pressure transmitters have a signal collector like a flexible diaphragm and a transmission element that uses a capacitive, resistive, and inductive methods in generating electrical signals.
Here is how some standard pressure transmitters work;
Capacitance Pressure Transmitters
This pressure transmitter uses two capacitive plates; diaphragm and electrode, with a set distance between them. Any change in pressure is relayed through the changes in distance between the diaphragm and the electrode. The difference in the length of the capacitance is converted into a readable signal.
Gauge Pressure Transmitters
The gauge pressure transmitter uses a gauge set in the diaphragm, such that any changes in pressure causes strain or deformation of the system. The strain or formation is then converted into a readable electric signal.
Tips for Installing a Pressure Transmitter
Installing a pressure transmitter in UAE is generally an easy task when you follow the set of practises for installation. Pressure transmitters errors` are experienced from time to time, and they don't come easy to repair or replace. Some of these practises are;
Eliminate all the mistakes when piping between the transmitter and the process. Some of these errors are; loss of friction, pressure leaks, liquid in the gas section, gas in the liquid line, and density variations.
The standard system pressure must not be higher than the pressure ratings of the three components; the pressure transmitter, the pressure sensor on the vessel, and the vessel or line being monitored.
Ensure you install the sensor in the right location. No matter the rating of the components, a transmitter with a faulty or misaligned sensor will not operate as required. Use a thread tape and a sealant, starting with your hands to ensure precision. Do not overtighten the sensor; this can compress the diaphragm, which changes the transmitter pressure reactions, resulting to erroneous readings.
Fit all the connections. Matching the connections is essential in avoiding leakages. Unfitting nuts will respond to different pressure levels differently, which can lead to wrong readings.
Types of Pressure Meters
There are four significant types of pressure transmitters. They are;
Gauge pressure transmitters
Used mostly in process industries to measure the pressure of steam, gas, and liquid, gauge pressure transmitters are responsive to atmospheric conditions. Pressure transmitters come with more stability and reliability when compared to pressure transducers. They are also easier to automate, making them preferable to switches, gauges, and sensors.
The gauge pressure transmitters also come with unique technology. It does not involve differential pressure. This makes it hard to do away with or replace with a different type of transmitter.
Absolute pressure transmitters
These are the pressure transmitters used in a full vacuum to sense total pressure. They are used to measure forces in places that require high accuracy levels. They are not easily influenced by atmospheric pressure.
Differential pressure transmitters
These transmitters are used to measure the difference between different transmitters. They can be used for either level or flow applications. Flow application involves measuring the differences in upstream and downstream sides of a pipe. The difference determines the water flow.
There is a risk to differential pressure transmitters as most industries prefer to measure flow rate using ultrasonic and Coriolis when looking for more accuracy and reliability.
Multivariable pressure transmitters
These are used to measure several process variables; mass flow, volumetric flow, and temperature. The only concern with using the multivariable transmitters is the cost, as they tend to be expensive. The price is justifiable though, in the fact that you don't have to buy several other types of pressure transmitters.
Advantages of Pressure Transmitters
Several advantages come with using pressure transmitters as compared to other gauges. They provide an accurate measurement of pressure levels and pressure differences. These transmitters are made to withstand any environmental conditions and can even be fully submerged.
Most pressure transmitters are designed using piezoelectric materials that are immune to electromagnetic and radiation fields. Besides, they can be easily connected with other machines to measure more variables other than atmospheric pressure.
One of the significant disadvantages that come with the machine is the cost of pressure transmitters in Dubai. They tend to be expensive, even though it varies depending on the type of pressure transmitter preferred.
