The Incredible Hulk (1968) #268 and The Avengers (1963) #7
even though this is a terrible moment for him, upsetting Steve and being harshly rejected from a role he really wants, I have to wonder if, in addition to that, some part of Rick felt good about Steve saying he would be so affected by Rick dying.
The Incredible Hulk (1962) #1
it is a part of his feelings towards Bruce that, in addition to feeling guilt over Bruce becoming the Hulk, Rick also feels gratitude that Bruce would risk his life to save his.
#also not Steve ripping off Rickโs mask because at this point he canโt bear to look at Rick's face when he looks /that/ much like Bucky#and I hadnโt noted before the phrasing that โthe great American Southwest seemed to draw him back no matter how far he driftedโ#that + the fact that Rick being reckless at the bomb testing site was fueled by his issues about his worth and lack of role in life#adds an element of fate/sense of doomedness#similar to that Bruceโs upbringing led him to working on the gamma bomb project and caused the mental issues that manifested in the Hulk#despite the incredible coincidence that Rick looks very similar to Bucky and met Steve the day he woke up from the ice#I don't feel a sense of fate around their relationship because it gets so cut short#like something could have happened there but then it didnโt#they were able to simply walk away from each other and then not get drawn back in#my posts
