Interview: Model Turned LACC Valedictorian Jill Billingsley Talks Writing, Modeling, and The Fear of Procrastination

Jill Billingsley plays a youtube video of screams to help her sleep at night. She says the noise keeps her mind from racing, thinking about everything she didn't accomplish in the day.

Procrastination causes Jill a lot of turmoil and guilt so she finds herself awake at night, paranoid she could have done more with her day.

To keep her mind from racing at night, Jill keeps busy as a full-time student, graphic designer, tutor, and working model. At Los Angeles City College, she is a graphic designer developing various designs seen campus-wide and serves as a tutor at the campus writing center (WSC), where she helps reinforce the fundamentals of effective writing to students that need the support. Outside of LACC, Billingsley is signed with a couple modeling agencies and will often sit and model for make-up students attending the Make-up Designory in Burbank. Somehow, she does all this while working towards earning a BFA in animation at Cal State Long Beach

But modeling and tutoring couldn't be more different. The cutthroat modeling business is a far cry from the collaborative community of the junior college.

As a tutor, few things move Billingsley more than supporting transfer students as a second set of eyes on personal statements that may change life paths.

"I find myself rooting for everyone, which is a dramatic change from my other profession," she notes, "being able to offer relief to students that are stressed to the point of tears s a highlight."

Though the motivation behind Jill's move from her birthplace of Alberta, Canada to Los Angeles had to do with love, a subsequent breakup and experience on the show America's Next Top Model would suddenly change all her original plans here in LA.

After careful consultation and reprioritization, Billingsy decided to stay in LA and enroll at LACC. At LACC, Jill earned associate degrees in Psychology and Studio Arts culminating with valedictorian honors in 2020.

"LA has inspired a passion in education for me and I have a lot of personal wins here and loads of bizarre stories," says Billingsly, "the entire city is very connected, and while my province back home is hitting records of being the coldest place on the planet, I get to soak in Vitamin D whenever I want."

As a writer, Billingsley always begins with inspiration and cross-comparisons between old and new ideas. She'll start with seed ideas that lead to outlines and build stories that shape into illustrations and animations.

Jill's advice to writers is to continue to work their muscles and write about anything that comes to mind, write often, write daily, and record your dreams.

"It is important to find your voice and continually put yourself out there," notes Billingsley, "I do say no to a lot of jobs that will not serve me the way I want since I do not have a lot of free time, so I need to pick and choose projects carefully."

Jill still bullies herself into staying outside her comfort zone and doing the things that make her stomach turn. In the future, Jill envisions herself gravitating toward opportunities that would allow her to work from home to write more books and create more art to keep her mind active and engaged.

In reflection, Jill closed by saying, "I think shy, and introverted 15-year-old Jill would be shocked and amazed at today's Jill's personal growth and experiences. I am still shy, but every other day I can get in front of a classroom and speak without over-analyzing anything and just be in the moment."

21. Any goals for 2021

Saving up to move out <3 There are a lot of other goals that have been put on hold because of quarantine. By a miracle vaccine, I’d love to move back in with my roommates and head to my Makeup Designory classes. 

I also want to improve my tarot readings. Currently, I’m only practicing the past, present, and future, along with one card a month. I’d love to be able to do readings for others. <3
