Collared pratincole in June on Wheldrake Ings, Yorkshire. Painted for the upcoming book 'Birds of the Lower Derwent Valley' by Craig Ralston.
I grew up next to the Lower Derwent Valley and do miss the smell of meadowsweet underfoot and skies full of noisy swifts.

So I finished this portrait a few days ago and even though I very much didn't like the pencils I used I think it came out pretty neat 🙂

these are from an art hang party drawing session on youtube where we started with 2 mins to draw an image just from a description, then 30 sec with the reference picture, then 2 minutes, and finally 5 minutes! this was so fun

A Christmas Coo
Tumblr media
I painted this sweet Heilan' Coo under the Christmas Star, as a tribute to the cows in the stable in the Nativity story 🌟
I love the idea of the cow experiencing the first snow of the season while their wee Robin friend nestles into their hair, all cosy! ❄️😃 I gave prints as Christmas presents last year 😊

Testing out a set of coloured pencils I got myself this month and I love the more natural palette. Finally I have some warm brown tones!

𝕱𝖗𝖆𝖓𝖐𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖙𝖊𝖎𝖓 ⚡️
This originally started off as a drawing for day 2 of @mabgravesart challenge #mabsdrawlloweenclub prompt list, which I did in ink for Inktober, however it quickly escalated into something much bigger than that! I always knew that I would finish this drawing late due to most of the prompts I wanted to do clashing with a hiking holiday I was going on (during which I was going on three nine-mile hikes with insane elevation in a row, with only a couple of hours if that at the end of each day to work on art) but I had no idea just how long it would take me to finish it! I have decided that I hate stippling very much and will never use it as a shading method ever again! (This is a lie, by the way - I may hate doing stippling, but I do love the results it gives).

On the day the prompt was for, I only managed to draw the base sketch, which went fairly easily, but I just didn’t have the time to start drawing early on in the day. I intended to draw him much smaller than this, to make him more of a sketch that I was really only doing for the sake of the prompt, but he somehow ended up bigger than I intended. I thought I could handle him, but with this being my first stippled-ink drawing, I was nowhere near prepared for just how long stippling took. I was also quite apprehensive while inking, because I’m not used to using so permanent a medium.
I am very pleased with how he came out, though. All the individual dots were worth it, even if I did feel like I was fighting for my life at the end!
HB mechanical pencil (for the sketch) and Derwent fine liner pens on 160 gsm paper 🖊️

Apologies for the bad WIP photos, most of them were taken in a badly-lit room in a youth hostel in Ambleside (Lake District)!

#14. Oranges. Dry pastels, pastel pencils, chalk.
Even if I want to draw something simple and joyful, it always looks like a 17th century vanitas. Love my style :)

Painting I was commissioned to do for an upcoming book about my local nature reserve here in North Yorkshire, UK.
All the digital paintings i made for the book are of real places. It was so lovely to be asked to illustrate my home and fun trying to capture the seasonal light and mood of somewhere I know so well!
Here is a lesser spotted woodpecker visiting the area in winter. Pictured with barn owl, roe deer and gulls coming into roost on the floodwater.

Little lady with red hair 🌻
Drawn to test this Fabriano 50% cotton paper. It is nice for my painting style, my only complaint is it's very thin.
