love in the eighties | june 24, 2020 entry
"whatever happened to chivalry? does it only exist in 80's movies? i want john cusack holding a boombox outside my window. i wanna ride off on a lawnmower with patrick dempsey. i want jake from sixteen candles waiting outside the church for me. i want judd nelson thrusting his fist into the air because he knows he got me. just once i want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. but no, no, john hughes did not direct my life." —olive penderghast (easy a, 2010)
sixteen candles 1984 is one of my favorite coming of age movies. it’s about a girl named samantha whose birthday was forgotten by her family because of her sister’s wedding. as if her sour sixteen couldn’t get any sourer, she felt invisible around her bigtime crush, jake. relatable. but to cut everything short and sweet, she got her happy ever after like any john hughes teen movie. dashing jake noticed her, asked her out, picked her up in her beautiful pink dress while wearing a wreath of flowers on her head, and they rode his red vintage car in pure bliss while a sappy 80’s music played in the background. the handsome leading man always had a car to take a girl out, right? it ended with jake giving her a birthday cake with sixteen candles to celebrate her forgotten-turned-best-birthday and they capped off the night with a passionate kiss. the end. typical john hughes 80’s teen flick and a definite hit, too.
this is a basic rom-com plot which most of us buy especially the hopeless romantics. it is a feel-good escape from reality and gives us hope of having our own happy ever afters. but even if i come back to reality that is called everyday life, i will still believe of those happy ever afters, wearing my favorite dress during a heart-racing scene, and that reach-for-the-stars type of love. i deserve it just like anyone else. why do you think people even spend a good amount of time and effort producing romance films, novels, and music? it’s because of love, art, and beauty. all that we stay alive for.
