i would like to order one infodump pls sir
Brace yourselves, I'm gonna talk about sports.
If you slightly stretch your definitions, and don't listen to the lies big NFL is spreading, the Indianapolis Colts are actually the second oldest NFL team.
Tumblr media
The Dayton Triangles (incredible name) were founded in 1913, starting off in the old Ohio League, and joined the NFL as a founding member in 1920. The Triangles are believed to have played in the very first NFL game in October 1920.
The Triangles then moved to Brooklyn and became the Dodgers. Side tangent: NFL teams really liked to copy MLB team names from the 20s through to the 40s, the New York Giants are the last big vestige of this, and the Pittsburgh Steelers were originally the Pittsburgh Pirates. There was an NFL and MLB St. Louis Cardinals at the same time for a couple decades, but it was a complete coincidence! The baseball and football Cardinals both date back to the late 19th century, but the football Cardinals started off in Chicago, coincidentally moving to St. Louis in the 60s, and now playing in Arizona. Early NFL teams also liked to pick names that thematically fit with the local baseball team, such as the Chicago Bears and Cubs, and the Detroit Lions and Tigers.
Anyways, back to the Triangles lineage. The Dodgers eventually renamed themselves the Tigers for a single season, and merged with the Boston Yanks for 1945 because of the war.
Here's where the headache begins, the Yanks and the Tigers separated again after the 1945 season, and the Tigers owner left for the rival AAFC to become the New York Yankees. In '49, the Yanks owner moved the team from Boston to New York to become the Bulldogs. When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, only three teams were selected to join fully. The rest had their players dispersed to teams in their area. The Yankees players were dispersed between the Giants and Bulldogs, who renamed themselves the Yanks again.
In 1952, the Yanks sold the team to the league after financial problems. The league sold the team, which relocated to become the Dallas Texans (no connection to the AFL's Dallas Texans, who are now the Kansas City Chiefs)
The Texans sucked. They didn't even last the full 1952 season before being sold back to the league. So again, the team was sold to a new owner and relocated, this time to Baltimore. The Baltimore Colts (no connection to the AAFC's Baltimore Colts, one of the three teams chosen to fully join the NFL, which quickly folded after a year or two) were officially founded in 1953, and continue to this day in Indianapolis. A move infamously executed in the middle of the night under threat of imminent domain by the state, using Mayflower moving trucks. (Yes, the move was shitty, but Baltimore also stole the original Browns from Cleveland so not like their fans can claim to be saints either.)
Tumblr media
The NFL doesn't consider the Colts lineage to trace back to the Triangles, and neither do the Colts themselves. It's a fun curiosity that lives on in the mind of fans, and sometimes it pops up every now and then.

Canal Market District in Newark, Ohio
Fresh fruit and vegetables, new products and crafts were just a few of the items available at the Canal Market District in downtown Newark. Opening in 2016, the market began with close to ten vendors and offered a summer schedule of local entertainment.  Some of the amazing merchants I met included Nay and Terry Dismore from Pretzels with a Twist.  Their company offers miniature gourmet pretzels…

The sun was hinting its presence in the horizon as the car took the last turn. The radio was playing softly in the background, the weather man of the usual show he listened to as he got his day started predicting a lovely April day, Spring in full swing, perhaps a bit chillier as the night returned to cover Lima, Ohio. But until then, it would be a warm, beautiful day – it made Kurt smile as he parked the car in his usual spot.
The diner looked good. They had given the exterior a new coat of paint just last month. The only thing that showed just how long it had been there was the sign on the roof, the one Kurt refused to change because it had been picked by his father, many, many years ago: the second m on Hummel’s was dimmer than the other letters. Kurt knew it could be easily fixed or replaced, but he refused to. Sometimes it was okay to choose history over esthetics.
And there was so, so much history here.
Hummel’s had been around for decades. It was the go-to diner for most of the residents of Lima, founded by his own father when he was barely out of high school. It had had a bumpy start – Kurt had heard the story ever since he could remember, how his father had turned years of savings and some money he’d gotten from his family after graduation, into his livelihood. It had been hard at first, doing everything himself because he couldn’t afford to hire any help, a few friends popping over here and there to help flip pancakes or make small repairs as Burt did everything else. Eventually, though, it began to grow, and Burt had enough money for new furniture, for a better grill, for a couple of waitresses. The business grew, and there had been plenty of sweat, tears and sleepless nights invested in it until it did. But Burt Hummel had been a proud man, and when things got hard, he worked harder, until he beat all the odds that had been against him.
“I didn’t have many choices after high school,” Burt had told his son on more than one occasion. “I knew I had to start my own business – I wasn’t exactly book smart, I’ve never been. For a while I entertained playing football in college, but then I got hurt during my senior year in high school so that was out. My dad owned a garage back then, and I thought about following in his footsteps, but there was enough competition in town that my dad was already struggling and going to work with him would have been a terrible idea. It was also probably a terrible idea to open my own diner – I didn’t even know how to cook, for god’s sake. I don’t even know where I got the idea to begin with. But I just knew I wanted my own business. And we all used to drive all the way to Kenton or even Dayton on the weekends for a good dating spot. There was nowhere decent to have a meal with your friends or your girlfriend here. I know you still call Lima a small town, but it certainly was small back then…”
For a younger Kurt, who dreamed of big cities filled with skyscrapers, Lima was certainly small – small-minded, too. He couldn’t imagine anything smaller than that.
Nowadays, Kurt wouldn’t think of Hummel’s as a dating spot, but he guessed back then it had been a pretty decent option, before places like Breadstix opened when he was a teenager, or even the Lima Bean, the local coffee shop that Kurt had loved when he was still in high school. Slowly, Hummel’s had become everyone’s go-to choice for a quick breakfast before school or work, or even a dinner stop at the end of a long day. Everyone had loved Burt Hummel – he had been a bit gruff, but always decent and kind and he would always sneak an extra scoop of ice-cream on every kid’s order of waffles.
A couple of years ago, that thought had sent a pang through Kurt, ache and grief mixing to make everything in him feel tight, tight, tight. Now, it had dulled into a manageable ache, and he was able to smile whenever one of the patrons shared a memory of his father with him. He still missed him – what he wouldn’t give to get one more hug, one more piece of advice, to hear his laughter once again – but it didn’t take his breath away, as it used to.
Kurt unlocked the door and went into the diner, turning every light on as he went. First order of business, every morning, was to turn the coffee machine on, so he went straight to it on the counter and got it started before he went into the office to leave his bag. As the scent of freshly brewed coffee began to fill the empty diner, he started to take the chairs down from the tables, getting everything ready for the first few customers, who would surely be here soon.
The inside of Hummel’s had a classic American diner vibe. In recent years, Kurt had only allowed himself to change a few things in the décor, mostly those that were too worn with age. He kept all the framed photographs that filled one of the walls, though, the ones that showed the history of his family with this place. He had only added a few, marking the moment he had taken over the diner after his father got sick and eventually passed away. Now, alongside pictures of his parents in their 20s, you could find pictures of Kurt’s twin daughters sitting side by side on the counter, or of his husband, Ryan, helping to fix a leak in the kitchen sink. His chest filled with pride as he stared at them, as he did each morning – he had never imagined they would end up here, and yet now… well, he couldn’t picture himself elsewhere.
The little bell above the door twinkled as it opened. Kurt turned and smiled at Marley, the morning shift waitress, as she came in. She was already wearing the dark blue uniform, her hair pulled up in a pony tail. She was also a recent addition to Hummel’s. Kurt liked her – she was kind and quick and responsible, and she was never late. Whenever he had to hire someone new, he wondered whether his father would approve. He thought he had nailed it with Marley.
About a minute after she had arrived, the door opened again and Blaine Anderson walked in.

This Day in History: Memphis Belle
On this day in 1943, a B-17 Flying Fortress completes its 25th combat mission without losing a member of its crew. Memphis Belle would return to the United States, embark on a war bond tour, and become one of the most famous bombers to emerge from World War II.
She was nearly sold for scrap metal after the war, but Memphis mayor Walter Chandler saved her for $350. Today, she’s been refurbished and sits at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
Memphis Belle’s survival was no small feat.

On November 7, 1979, Col. Jim Sullivan and Col. Richard Uppstrom delivered the only surviving YF-12A aircraft, 60-6935, to the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. The aircraft has been on permanent display in the museum's Research and Development Gallery ever since. The YF-12 flew from test flight in 1965 when my father Richard “Butch” Sheffield was test flighting the SR 71 at Edward’s until 1979.
That’s 33 years!
Interesting because the RSO was the Museum Director!
Yes, he is listed on the official list as a VIP who flew the YF-12. Here is the list if somebody says they flew the SR 71 or any Blackbird check here. sr71.us/Supp_BBook_Pg1…
I just wonder how he convinced them to give him a ride in a Blackbird. Or it could’ve been the other way around. I don’t know the full story but I sure would like to know.
It was a very smooth move, and I’m sure gave him plenty to talk about his flight as he was the longest museum Director in history.
We know who Jim Sullivan is he is the SR-71 pilot who flew the 972 to London in 1974 along with RSO Noel Widdifield I saw Noel at the last reunion. I did read that this was the first and only time that Sullivan flew a YF12. I don’t think it was much different than the SR 71 in the cockpit that is.
The YF 12 held three air-to-air missiles in its bay instead of cameras.

two more otw board directors, natalia gruber and antonius melisse, have resigned from the otw board.
while not mentioned in otw's post, the context for this appears to be that because both natalia and antonius were on hiatus at the moment, the board would not be able take action on the demands surfaced by otw volunteer dhobikikutti, and supported by other otw volunteers, calling for the suspension of otw board director alex tischer for a history of racist behavior.
(it's worth nothing that kutti, who is a person of color and a volunteer with the otw tag wrangling committee, was officially reprimanded for speaking out about racism in the org, which was not only limited to critique of alex, and included kutti being told kutti was making other volunteers uncomfortable by asking for action on racism in the org. yup. super fucked up!!!!)
according to fail_fandomanon, vounteers asked natalia and antonius to either return from hiatus so the board could potentially convene on this topic, or resign, and they appear to have chosen the latter option.
a few takeaways from this:
there are now three remaining board directors: president kari dayton, secretary alex tischer (the board member with a history of racism), and michelle schroeder. kari and michelle would both have to vote for alex's removal, unless alex resigns
it's unclear to me if people expect kari and michelle to take up the matter of alex's suspension or not; alex is also leaving the board after elections, but a suspension would still matter in the time left in alex's term and because alex would otherwise likely continue as an otw volunteer
the otw board elections are now uncontested because there are five candidates and five seats. the seats are for different term lengths, so the election will still happen to determine which directors get which seats
the broader context for all of this too is that a lot of the conversations that got us to this point were catalyzed by the @end-otw-racism campaign launching in may. @end-otw-racism is currently running a #VoteToEndOTWRacism action to advocate for incoming board members to uphold the otw's 2020 commitments.
we'll see what else happens before the elections, which will take place in just a few weeks, from august 11 to 14!!!
