If you were making that list, what would you consider the seven wonders of the railroad world?
Hm, putting me on the spot here!
I mentioned Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA for a reason.
Horseshoe Curve was completed in 1854. The purpose of it was to reduce the grade trains had to climb up through the mountains and avoid the much more time-consuming route of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Today, there's a visitor center in the middle of the Curve, and railfans go there to watch trains go by and picnic outside.
As mentioned in the previous post, Tehachapi Loop is also impressive and I'd give it a spot - it legitimately looks like something out of someone's model train layout.
From above this doesn't even look real. But it's real!
I've seen some people put the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in West Bengal on their lists, and I'd agree with them. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. It's narrow gauge, climbs up through the mountains, and is popular with tourists - and although it has some diesels it also still uses steam. Look at how cute this locomotive is.
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site for consideration is the Forth Bridge, in Scotland:
It's a cantilever railway bridge and was the longest cantilever bridge span in the world at the time of its opening, a title it held between 1890 and 1919. It's still the second longest today. In 2016 Scotland voted it as their greatest man-made wonder, an impressive feat in a country stereotyped as being chock full of civil and mechanical engineers.
For reaching incredible heights in the 19th century, look no further than the Ferrovías Central in Peru.
Designed by a Polish political exile named Ernest Malinowski, it was built in the 1870s and still operates today. What was known as the Callao, Lima & Oroya Railway at the time of its opening is still the second highest railroad in the world today, only being surpassed by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway over 100 years later.
It would be silly not to include the Trans-Siberian Railroad on this list - in terms of sheer scope, this thing is massive.
It's the longest railway line in the world. Nothing else even comes remotely close. Trips along it can take weeks depending on the speed the trains are running.
Lastly, for a more modern entry, I'd propose the Channel Tunnel linking England and France - at its lowest point, it's 246 feet below sea level. In terms of a modern feat of engineering, this one is definitely up there. It was completed the year I turned five, and it was a big deal even over here in the US.
Of course, the fun of this is coming up with your own! And I had to think pretty hard about this because I was trying to do it without using any locomotives, which would have been a cop-out!
Here are a few links to people having this debate online, in case you want to read more - 1, 2, 3, 4

Darjeeling, a charming hill station nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, is a dream destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and tea enthusiasts alike. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, world-famous tea gardens, and the iconic toy train ride, Darjeeling offers an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for a serene escape, a Darjeeling tour package is your gateway to tranquility, scenic beauty, and a slice of colonial heritage.
Why Choose a Darjeeling Tour Package?
A Darjeeling tour package offers travelers a chance to explore the serene hill station without the hassle of planning every little detail. These packages typically include transportation, accommodation, and guided tours, ensuring a smooth and stress-free vacation. Whether you're visiting for a family getaway, a romantic retreat, or an adventure-packed trip, there’s a tour package tailored to your preferences.
One of the key attractions of any Darjeeling tour package is the opportunity to experience the mist-covered hills and lush tea gardens that the town is known for. The moment you set foot in Darjeeling, the fresh mountain air and panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range will captivate you. Add to that the region’s unique blend of cultures, with influences from Nepal, Tibet, and West Bengal, and you’ll find that Darjeeling offers a perfect mix of nature, heritage, and adventure.
Scenic Beauty of Darjeeling
When you embark on a Darjeeling tour package, you’re treated to the pristine beauty of the Himalayas. The towering Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world, dominates the skyline and provides a stunning backdrop to the town. Waking up to the sight of the sun rising over these snow-capped peaks is a magical experience, one that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Tiger Hill is one of the most famous spots to witness this majestic sunrise. A popular stop on many Darjeeling tour packages, the view from Tiger Hill is particularly enchanting at dawn, as the first rays of the sun illuminate the peaks. From here, you can see not only Kanchenjunga but also Mount Everest on clear days. The panoramic vista is reason enough to book a Darjeeling tour package, but it’s just the beginning of what this beautiful region has to offer.
The Iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
No Darjeeling tour package is complete without a ride on the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this narrow-gauge railway meanders through misty mountains, over charming bridges, and past bustling villages. The journey offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and tea estates and is an experience steeped in nostalgia.
The Toy Train ride is not just a transportation method but an attraction in itself. The slow, winding journey allows you to fully absorb the beauty of Darjeeling’s landscape. It’s a great way to appreciate the region's natural splendor at a leisurely pace, making it a must-include feature in any Darjeeling tour package.
Explore the Famous Tea Gardens
Darjeeling is synonymous with tea, and no visit would be complete without exploring the lush tea estates that dot the region. A well-curated Darjeeling tour package will often include a visit to these iconic tea plantations, where you can witness the tea-making process from leaf to cup.
At estates like the Happy Valley Tea Estate, you can take guided tours to learn about the unique techniques used to produce the world-renowned Darjeeling tea. Visitors can also participate in tea-tasting sessions, where they can sample a variety of flavors and blends. The sight of neatly manicured tea bushes sprawling across misty hills is breathtaking, and it’s easy to see why Darjeeling is often referred to as the “Champagne of Teas.”
Buying fresh tea straight from the source makes for a perfect souvenir, and a Darjeeling tour package ensures you get the best local experience when visiting these plantations.
Explore Darjeeling’s Cultural and Historical Heritage
In addition to its natural beauty, Darjeeling has a rich cultural and historical heritage. One of the highlights of a Darjeeling tour package is a visit to the Ghoom Monastery, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region. The monastery houses a 15-foot-tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha, and its peaceful atmosphere offers a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of town.
Another historical landmark is the Darjeeling Peace Pagoda, which stands as a symbol of harmony. Perched on a hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Visitors can take part in prayers and rituals at the pagoda, making it a spiritually enriching stop on your Darjeeling tour package.
The colonial influence is evident in the architecture of Darjeeling as well, with several heritage buildings dating back to the British Raj. St. Andrew’s Church and the Darjeeling Gymkhana Club are prime examples of British-era architecture that can be explored on a tour of the town.
Adventure Activities in Darjeeling
For those seeking a bit of adventure, a Darjeeling tour package offers plenty of opportunities to get your adrenaline pumping. The town is a hub for trekking, with several trails leading through forests, rivers, and mountain passes. The Sandakphu trek is one of the most popular options, taking you to the highest point in West Bengal and offering panoramic views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other towering peaks.
Paragliding is another thrilling activity that’s growing in popularity. Soaring over the hills and valleys of Darjeeling, with the Himalayas as your backdrop, is an unforgettable experience. River rafting on the Teesta River is yet another adventure option for those who want to add some excitement to their Darjeeling tour package.
Best Time to Visit Darjeeling
A well-planned Darjeeling tour package considers the best time to visit the region. The ideal months to explore Darjeeling are from March to May and October to December. During these times, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies offering the best views of the mountains. The monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rainfall, which can obscure the views and make travel challenging, so it’s best to avoid this period unless you love misty landscapes and rainy weather.
Conclusion
A Darjeeling tour package offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and adventure. Whether you're wandering through the lush tea gardens, taking a nostalgic ride on the Toy Train, or witnessing the majestic sunrise at Tiger Hill, every moment in Darjeeling is magical. The town’s rich cultural heritage, combined with its stunning natural surroundings, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the wonders of the Himalayas.
So, if you’re looking for a memorable vacation that offers tranquility, adventure, and heritage, a Darjeeling tour package is your ideal choice. Let the misty mountains and tea trails of Darjeeling captivate your heart—this enchanting hill station is waiting for you!
