The winner of the August 21 showdown between unified titleholder Errol Spence Jr. and the legendary Manny Pacquiao will become the first Ring welterweight champion since Floyd Mayweather relinquished the title in September 2015. Other holders of this prestigious prize include all-time greats Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. However, the decision to put the championship at stake in this matchup was not an easy one. While Spence is the Ring’s No. 1 rated welterweight, Pacquiao is currently situated at No. 3. Ideally, a vacant title goes on the line when No. 1 faces No. 2, but unfortunately a bout between Spence and three-weight world titleholder Terence Crawford remains in the fantasy fight section. Promoters? Networks? Ego? Money? All of the above? Who cares? It’s boring and The Ring has to move on. Our own championship policy stipulates the following: “If a fight between the No. 1 and 2 contenders cannot be made and  No. 1 fights No. 3, the winner may be awarded The Ring belt if the Editorial Board deems the No. 3 contender worthy.” All three members of the editorial board voted and all three agreed that Pacquiao-Spence qualifies. “Like every serious fight fan, I’ve been looking forward to a Spence-Crawford showdown for years, but it’s looking less and less likely,” said The Ring’s Managing Editor, Tom Gray. “There’s the tendency for fans and media to attribute blame, but I honestly couldn’t care less at this point. Joaquin Torres WIP Sneak Peek

“Trying to hide behind the curtains again are we y/n?” Bucky’s voice made you look to your right, and there he was. Standing next to you wearing a sharp three-piece black suit, his hair slicked back.

You finally understood what Steve meant when he would say girls back then would throw themselves at Bucky.

He turned to you in disgust, “Are you checking me out?”

“You wish, asshole.” You mutter in your glass.

You and Bucky had developed an unlikely friendship after the blip bought him back. He was pardoned, and moved into a quaint apartment complex deep in the city, unknown to the fact that you lived right next to his place.

“You see Sam anywhere?” he asks you nonchalantly.

You give him a sly smirk, “Why? Can’t wait to shove your tongue down his throat?”

Bucky gives you a sideward glance, and goes back to looking at the crowd.

He was still figuring out his feelings towards both men and women, especially towards one man.

Returning from the Flag Smashers situation, he would not shut up how ‘annoying’ and ‘frustratingly righteous’ Sam Wilson is, how his smirk makes him want to ‘strangle’ him.

You asked him one evening if he was having a ‘full-on-bi-panic’ and he threw a pillow at your face.

“y/n! there you are!” Sam bellows as he walks towards the two of you, wearing a crisp grey suit over a white button up, looking as dapper as always.

“Sam!” you laugh, giving him a tight hug. He was your mentor, someone you looked up to. And hopefully your bestie’s future boyfriend.

“You look absolutely gorgeous!” he threw you one of his classic smiles as he retreated.

You look down to the pastel pink knee length dress you were wearing.

Hustling the life of an avenger straight out of MIT, it was the only dress you owned. And after paying for it out of your own pocket you realize fancy dresses cost a hand and a leg, and you refuse to part from it.

“Thank you Sam I-” you were about to thank him but stopped once you noticed him absolutely gawking at Bucky.

“Hey Bucky.” He smiled.

“Hey Sam.” Bucky gave him a nod.

You almost roll your eyes at the exchange, wondering when they will move on from the weird talking phase.

“Hello.”

An angelic voice interrupted your train of thoughts. Looking away your eyes meet a pair of the warmest brown eyes. He was standing behind Sam. A tall, tan-skinned man, wearing a crisp black suit stood in front of you. His curls fell on his forehead, and his smile was intoxicating.

He looked like a high surf tide; calling out for you to test the waters.

You extend your right hand, smiling at him. “Hey, I’m y/n”

He held it with his right, it made your heart race when he brought your hand up to his lips and kissed your knuckles, his hands warm and his lips soft, sending a jolt through your body.

Oh, he’s mischief alright!

You were left speechless when he straightened, a smirk thrown out your way as Sam spoke up, “This is the guy I told y’all about! Lt. Joaquin Torres.” He slapped a hand on Joaquin’s back, smiling with pride.

“You haven’t had a drink yet Lieutenant? Let’s get you something.” you smile involuntarily.

He stands back for you to lead the way, “Sure. And it’s just Joaquin, please.” he laughs just after, his honey laced voice paired with your tad bit hazy mind doing wonders to your imagination.

The Heart's Gambit Ch. 4 || Sneak Peek

a/n - Hey guys I'm so sorry for the delayed updates on this series, I was home for the holidays but now i'm back at my college dorm and I promise I will be updating the chapters soon! till then, enjoy the sneak peek. [i'm sorry but this is the only appropriate GIF i could find without giving away too much :| ]

Joaquin stood up, deploying his falcon suit, and you followed, tightening your utility belt and strapping your tab inside your vest.

You winced, “ah!” gripping your wound as it sent a jolt up your body. Joaquin’s hand raised to reach for you, but he retreated as you walked to him, his stance rigid. It was hard to read his eyes, now covered with his visor lenses.

“Don’t you dare drop me.” you state, locking your arms around his shoulders.

He let out a dry laugh, “ha, I wish I could.” saying so, he pulled you in by your waist, harshly, and took off into the sky.

The wind whipped at your face, stealing your breath. As on instinct, you clung to him, burying your face in the crook of his neck. You swore he held you closer, but maybe it was just the wind, or the way your mind was playing tricks on you. It was too easy, the way your body fit against his. 

It was like muscle memory, an echo of a time when you were friends, before the tangled mess of your arrangement. 

On you apartment’s fire escape, Joaquin sat on the stairs, holding out his hand, a teasing grin playing on his lips. “Come on.”

“I can’t!” you whined.

“You can’t be scared of heights when your best friend is the Falcon,” he laughed with a playful challenge.

“Y/N, I thought I was your best friend!” Peter’s voice echoed, and you looked up to see him hanging upside down just above you.

“Can you stop doing that?” you snapped, your stomach twisting with anxiety, a strange warmth spreading through you when you looked at Joaquin.

“Look, it’s only the fourth floor. It’s not that high! You know, I once flew next to an F-15 with Sam. You know how high that is?” Joaquin insisted.

“That does not make me feel better, Joaquin!” you scream.

“I’m here just in case you fall. I’ll web you up!” Peter offered, but his upside-down presence only amplified your anxiety.

“No.”

“Okay, that leaves us only one other way,” Shang-Chi spoke up from behind you, before literally hauling you up and pushing you out onto the fire escape. You screamed and thrashed a bit, but calmed down once you felt Joaquin’s hand hold you tight by your waist.

You breathed hard, but Joaquin let you wrap your hands around him, rubbing your back, his laugh vibrating through you.

“I got you.” he urged you to look at him and you did. His calm demeanor and his touch on your skin should have calmed you, but your heart raced faster. You shift your gaze to the New York skyline, the sun disappearing behind the tall buildings, the bustling crowds beneath you and the cold wind on your face.

Shang Chi sat next to you, placing his arms behind your body, and you calmed down completely.

“Incoming!” Kate laughed before rolling down from the railing above and lying down on your legs, laughing, all while Peter hung upside down.

You saw the new york sunset together, and sat there in silence until the sky turned blue. 

That’s when you hit Shang Chi’s arm.

“Ow!”

“That was for pushing me out.” you laugh.

 Kate gasped, hitting Shang Chi, “You pushed her out on the fire escape?”

“Can you both stop hitting me?” he protests.

“Okay, time out!” Joaquin leaned to make Kate stop hitting Shang Chi, and sneakily brushed his lips on yours for a moment, making you laugh.

“Can you move?” Joaquin’s voice vibrates through you, making you realise your legs were touching the ground.

You jerked away from him, as he disengaged his helmet, meeting your gaze with disappointment.

The comms came to life with Bucky’s voice, “we’re in! Y/n, you have 10 minutes tops, starting now!”

You crashed back to reality, all your focus shifting to your mission, “Roger that.” Saying so, you ran with Joaquin on your heels.

Premise - When Sam Wilson gets tired of watching Joaquin dance around his feelings for Y/N, he steps in, saving the day.

Sam took a deep breath as he looked over at the scene.

Her hair fell on her face for the second time. As she wrote the report, she tucked her hair behind her ear, her eyebrows furrowed in concentration, and her notes and pens lay strewn across the table. And Joaquin stood in the hallway, gazing at her.

It has been four months of longing gazes, crashing into walls of the friend zone (that was virtually nonexistent at this point), sleepless nights, and hand-holding between you and Joaquin. And neither of you did anything about it.

Sam was getting frustrated. Because inevitably he was caught between the two of you.

"What are you doing?" he asks as he approaches him. Joaquin looks towards him and stands straight, “nothing, just… on my way to the lab.”

“The lab, what for?" he asked, knowing full well he was lying. “Uh… to meet… Yelena,” he said, brow furrowing because he himself couldn’t believe the words coming out of his mouth. “You want to meet Yelena. In the lab,” Sam asks with a straight face. “Yes.” “Just admit you were staring at Y/N” “No.”

“Hey, guys. What’s going on?” her voice traveled through the room as both of them turned towards her.

She was looking at the pair from her seat with a smile on her face. Joaquin couldn’t help but smile himself. Her smile was the most infectious thing ever, no one could escape it.

“Just catching up,” Sam places his arm around Joaquin’s shoulders, “talking about how we haven’t had a Movie Night since that dog movie.”

She and Joaquin both groan remembering the team’s reaction after watching “A Dog’s Purpose”. Everyone was bawling their eyes out by the end and Tony had put a ban on Movie Nights since then.

“Yeah that was a disaster," she grimaced. “Tell you what,” she playfully slaps Joaquin’s arm, “I was on my way to Tony’s lab, so I’ll convince him for a movie night if and only if we watch Clueless.” “What-” "Clueless." She stared at Sam, who was about to protest. “Okay. Fine.” he huffs out. “C’mon Sammy, I know you secretly love it.” she laughed and returned to collect her things.

Sam looks toward Joaquin to see him giving her the same dreamy look as before. He just knew the slap on Joaquin's shoulder by her was not as playful as it seemed.

And that was his final straw.

As she walked through the hallways towards the elevator, he shouted, “oh, and Y/N,” She turned, “yeah?”

“Joaquin has a crush on you.” He smiles and goes away.

Joaquin broke out of his trance hearing what he just said, “What?” He turned to look at Sam but he was already absent. “No, what?” he let out a nervous laugh looking at her and then behind him, "no, I- I don’t” “You don’t like me?” she says. “No, No I do. Everyone likes you. I- Sam-” he gives up and laces his fingers through his hair. She smiled at her shoes, desperately trying to hide a smile.

"Hola Y/N cómo estás" he shyly smirks.  <hi Y/N how are you?>

"mejor ahora que te veo" she says, smirking at him mischievously.  <better now that I see you>

That startled him. “Wh- what?”

"I'll save you a seat during the movie, okay?" she bites her lip mischievously and goes inside the elevator. As soon as the doors closed, he punched the air and laughed.

Looking over, Sam smiles at the scene, glad he won't be subjected to all the puppy love anymore.

He didn't know it was going to get worse once Y/N and Joaquin started dating.
