5 minute anime review: “30-sai no Hoken Taiiku”

What it’s about? Whether or not you can tell from the title, this is an anime about a 30 year old virgin who is visited by a pair of gods (the gods of sex) whose mission it is to help this man get rid of his virginity. Hilarity ensues with episodes in the form of "lessons in love/sex" with just about no holds barred!

What I liked? Honestly, with the premise being what it is, it could have been a really strange show to watch, but the material was handled so well that all you're left with is the impression that this show was equal parts funny and cute! It was also nice that the story, although it starts from the guy's perspective, eventually becomes a shared storyline between him and his helper-gods and his love interest and her helper-gods. It made it more dynamic with the introduction of additional characters and kept it out of being too "one pattern". Speaking of which - the characters were great with their individual levels of quirkiness. My favourites were Daigorou and his little brother Macaron (honestly way too cute - like trap/shota-level cute)! And I have to say that for a show that's only about 12 mins per episode, it never felt like they skimped too much on the details and the story moved at a nice, even pace.  

What I liked a little less? Due to the fact that this is a short anime - both in terms of episode time and season length - there isn't much to fault it on. I usually do refer to "one cour" syndrome as a problem but for this type of anime it works. But if I were to nitpick, it would probably be about things that fall into the realm of personal preferences, e.g. the level of ridiculousness in the show, or the scenes which induce some awkwardness (especially if you were watching this with someone else who doesn't share the same sense of humour). But really, it's all in good fun so there wasn't anything particularly negative about it.

Could, should or wouldn’t watch? This is a "could watch" from me, but only if this sort of topic doesn't offend you or make you uncomfortable (because there are some "helpful hints" here and there which might make for some awkward moments). But if you're okay with it and looking for some quick laughs with a cute edge to it, then this will get you through.

Despite the oddities of Midoriya's life becoming regular occurrences, he can't help but find it strange when he steps downstairs to the kitchen one night and hears “You should turn the lights on.” echo around the room. He pauses, automatically scanning to room for whoever spoke. When he sees that the room is empty, he utilises the tried and tested method of every horror movie, and calls out “Where are you?” to the darkness. There's no response. The incidents continue, people speaking- clearly speaking, to him- and yet he never sees who they are. Never gets a response. Never manages to find the source. He's the only person who hears them.
