“I think I’m in love with Shen Wei,” Zhao Yunlan said, the words punched out of him like he’d been hit by a truck, the realization of it coming over him, leaving him weirdly buzzed and dizzy like when his blood sugar gets too low. “Shit. I think I’m in love with Shen Wei.”

“Uh-huh,” Da Qing said without looking up from his paperwork. Half a stick of dried squid is hanging out of his mouth. 

Zhao Yunlan kicked him in the shins. “This is a life-changing realization here, you damn cat.”

“Yeah, and it’s one everyone else had three months ago.”

Also if you're unfamiliar with it, Da Qing and Ye Zun are playing the Mid-Autumn Festival Dice Game. It's played by throwing 6 dice in a bowl and getting a prize depending on the combination of the numbers. Mooncakes are the traditional prizes but when we play in the Philippines we get other snacks, sweets, and even groceries. I've experienced it twice (or thrice) and it was fun.

Inside, Zhao Xinci lets go of Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder and turns to face him with his arms crossed over his chest. The standard Disappointed Father posture, scowl and all. “Yunlan,” he says, “did you think the way you handled this case was appropriate?” A few years ago, Zhao Yunlan would have lashed out right back. But college had wised him up to what his dad gets out of these little talks, and this first week as SID chief had been a crash course in paying attention to the subtle dynamics of every conversation. Now, he takes note of the way their body language can still be seen by their colleagues through the wood panels, how their conversation will carry if it gets too loud. Now, Zhao Yunlan knows to register the way his father positioned them so only Zhao Yunlan’s face can be seen from the dining room. Or, events conspire such that new SID chief Zhao Yunlan meets the Black-Cloaked Envoy first.

my fill for @guardianbingo bonus round three: frustration.

i've been interested for a while by zhao yunlan's relationship with his dad — particularly in the juxtaposition of zhao yunlan having a terrible relationship with zhao xinci in a culture that values filial piety so much. this fic is really just a study of three of zhao yunlan's most important relationships — zhao xinci, shen wei, and da qing — set against the backdrop of zhao yunlan's first case as sid chief.
