as @custer-mp3​ helpfully mentions in the notes, if you have the browser addon uBlock Origin, you can add this to your filter list in your dashboard:

||zip^ ||mov^

This will block pages from those domains from loading. I’m not super familiar with the syntax here, but I believe this should block anything with these top level domains, rather than also blocking actual .zip and .mov files. Don’t quote me on that, though. You can also use any firewall programs on your computer to block domains, but the syntax for that may be different, depending on the provider.

New Things to Beware on the Internet

On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.

Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.

Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".

This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.

What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.

Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.

This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.

What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.

I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.

Be cautious out there.

My dear friend Julia needs help relocating following an eviction. It is a terrible situation, and it is urgent. This is after a legendary run of bad life luck. I can't sit while my friends fall. Thoughts and good vibes are neither currency nor a safety net.  Julia is a wonderful person, and a gifted writer. Their zines about being non-binary resonates in a way that I've rarely read elsewhere. I admire them in many ways, and care about them quite a lot. They are falling right now, and need to know that someone is here to catch them.  They need money for a move, and about 5k to secure a new home (deposit, first and last month rent). The struggle is real. It's daunting, but everything we can raise will go far. I used to have this fear, that I would lose my job, lose my home, lose my means and find myself alone to fend for myself. Maybe most people have this fear at some point. I just have to trust that people who care would do everything to catch me. They would be the lifeline, the ladder--even when I felt as though I were becoming an emotional and financial burden.  I know now, but still have to remind myself daily, that true compassion has no expiration date.  Please help if you can.

lets break em down

so there are a few big chunks of story so far, fortunately one of my special interests is taxonomy and i have a fetish for project management [1].

basically two main eras:

- a youngish high school + summer camp setting [late teens/twenties]. most of the aesthetics here are from that part of the setting, which has a lot of ~magical stuff beyond the heart of camp.

and! an undead hospital drama, including Nurse Jim from the camp health centre.

most of the events concerning the aesthetics described in this paper [I'll lean into it, eh] take place at the summer camp through Nurse Jim's adventures leading camping trips with Mick.[5]

[5] tbh, that does kinda let me fold those two jobs into one - it seems pretty cromulent that the health centre would assign someone like Nurse Jim on long trips

BUT YEAH. i found will's music on tumblr years ago and it's been a longtime favourite and a bedrock of my post-rock landscape.

list of things we know about Nurse Jim so far! [2]

tea drinker [1] but indulges in sweet hot drinks from the vending machine, especially vanilla.

ex-smoker. secret vaping habit.

magically good at getting kids to drink medicine. he just lines them up and it goes down the hatch.

great at decorating cookies, has an open baking habit, always brings something seasonal.

[busy with work though, so there's actually not much in his kitchen except baking stuff. has some specialized pans and ingredients, too)

Bonus: C.O.R.E. and S.I.D. the surgery-imaging-coffee robots, are also at pediatrics to do checkup scans and minor procedures and stuff.

jim would basically have many human children and two adult robots to mind xD
