As a long-time horror reader/viewer, I long ago figured out exactly how I would die in a horror story. I am exactly the kind of person who can't help but read the Forbidden Tome - I would jump at the chance to read/attend a performance of The King in Yellow. I will read any Leitner. I know this about myself.

I am, however, glad to have discovered through reading Charles Dexter Ward that this fatal curiosity has at least some sensible limits.

Finding out that I have an ancestor who was an infamous witch and necromancer: I am absolutely with Charles on this point - the only thing to do in that situation is do as much research as you possibly can to find out more about him. Sure, okay, he found a letter about Curwen's descendants saying "And of ye Seede of Olde shal One be borne who shal looke Backe, tho' know'g not what he seekes," but that could mean anything, right? It's probably fine.

Finding a long-hidden painting that proved that my infamous witch ancestor looked exactly like me: NOPE. Nope, no thank you, absolutely not. I would prefer no to. I'm gonna burn the painting immediately, destroy all my notes, leave town - no more genealogical research for me.

So that's one horror story I might survive, anyway. Maybe.

I might still have read his journal before burning it though.

i am still amazed by how my stupid brain seems unable to produce any actual hpl/zexal crossover considering the sheer amount of potential cthulhu ref in this series (pls ask me to talk about it pls ask me to talk about it). like okay don thousand is nyarlathotep that one’s obvious. all the barians made pacts with him through various time curwen style. maybe they don’t come from all those different time, just a few centuries ago? Anyway yeah they’re just interdimmensional immortal occult demons now. and Vector plays as keziah lol. actually vector as a lovecraftian char works so well he’s just a whole reincarnated manipulative demonic bitch and there are lots of those around.

Also the arclights??? like? okay you have Mihael being the token dumbass archeologist, except he’s actually good at that. Kazuma makes for a good dumbass archeologist but he’d be too good. and do i want to do a story abotu kazuma? Meanwhile Mihael would have so much fun like so excited to learn that socialist starfish aliens created humans and shit like this. Chris i wanna say he does math magic but know he’s that one guy who WONT believe that occultims or aliens are a thing doesn’t MATTER that his father is clearly possessed. i guess he’s just studying space but will try to justify that everything is actually not alien/occult, while kaito sincerely thinks there are such things and want to prove it. Byron is just perfect like he studies math interdimensional travels with the help of faker, studies ancient alien civilization, and ends up possessed yithian-style. Not sure what Thomas could do since he’s not a scientist and not talented enough to take pickman’s role. He doesn’t feel like he’d do occultism either. i guess he is the one to take care fo byron during his posession? and also maybe does drugs that sends him to dreamland/whatever else but no one believes him? would work especially with ryouga. idk.
