What are the Best Virtual Training Platforms?
Virtual training software is an essential tool for many businesses, and the onset of global social distancing efforts has only accelerated its widespread acceptance.
Since there are so many virtual training software programs out there, it can be challenging to choose one. It will need to fit your business training needs, be reasonably priced, and give you the tools you need.
There are several distinct types of online learning platforms. All feature the same concept of making it easier to train and teach. They include:
Virtual Training Platforms Features
LMS (learning management system)
CMS (content management system)
CSCLS (computer-supported collaborative learning system)
KM (knowledge management)
The following considerations need to be taken into account â are you using the platform for:
Academic or Corporate
Both types of platforms will allow you to automate a lot of different training processes. You will also be able to provide access to learning materials online, so employees will be able to access those when needed.
That being said, there are some significant differences between the two. Organizational structures, scheduling units, and tracking and assessment systems will be laid out and act differently depending on the platform. Make sure you have a hold of the right one for your business.
Industry Specific and Use Cases
There will probably be many instances where you need the online learning business platform you choose to be very industry-specific. With that, you will need some use cases in place as well.
An excellent example of this is the health industry. If your business is tied to healthcare, you want a learning platform integrated with a hospital management system, HIPAA, and ACCME web services.
While this is just an example, you see how this can be a significant factor in the final decision.

Use cases are another aspect to consider. Will the online learning business platform be able to handle everything you need? For example, is employee onboarding or peer-to-peer management training vital?
Features and Tools
Make sure the platform you choose has the specific tools and functionality you need. Perhaps create a list of things that are a âmust-haveâ for your business and setup.
How you plan on using your learning platform will ultimately determine which type of solution youâll navigate towards and how much youâll have to spend. PC Mag, for instance, rates Docebo highly as it is a great choice both for enterprises and SMBâs. See their article at The Best Online Course Platforms for Business for further info.
Regardless of the kind of online learning platform you use, youâll be able to upload multimedia content and develop quizzes based on the information in your files and your network. If you can match up everything you need to a specific platform, then you are good to go.

Effectiveness of online and blended learning from schools: A systematic reviewÂ
Joseph Cavanaugh, Stephen Jacquemin, Christine Junker .A look at student performance during the COVID-19 pandemic . Quality Assurance in Education . 20 June 2022 . ISSN: 0968-4883
Article publication date: 20 June 2022Â
Purpose
This study aims to use self-reported publicly available student assessment data from the time period when there was an abrupt change in instructional method at the start of COVID-19 to assess potential for differences as a result of course delivery mode.
Design/methodology/approach
A general linear model using 837 student evaluations from 191âUS public higher education institutions investigates the impact on student performance and how performance was related to a number of covariates, namely, online experience of instructor prior to shut downs, discipline of study and size of institution.
Findings
The analysis finds an overall grade point average (GPA) increase of 0.10 (out of 4.0) associated with the shift away from face-to-face instruction. In exploring potential covariates, only institutional size was significant in explaining this increase in GPA. This supports the notion that despite hardships inherent with the abrupt switch to online education across the country that student grades as a whole did not suffer.
Research limitations/implications
The source of data was self-reported. In addition, GPA is an imperfect measure of student learning. Despite this, because GPA is highly correlated with student satisfaction, retention and matriculation, it is relevant.
Practical implications
This study suggests that the rapid transition to online instruction did not negatively impact student performance and may have marginally increased these marks. These findings were cross-disciplinary and not influenced by the instructorâs prior online teaching experience. These findings support the idea that institutions and instructors should be more willing to use a variety of delivery modes going forward.
Originality/value
The data set used is uniquely large and varied in the number of institutions, professors, students and discipline. The COVID-19-induced transition from largely in-class instruction to mostly online or remote instruction allowed for a natural experiment that eliminates the sample selection problem associated with most other instructional method comparison studies.
This systematic analysis examines effectiveness research on online and blended learning from schools, particularly relevant during the Covid-19 pandemic, and also educational games, computer-supported cooperative learning (CSCL) and computer-assisted instruction (CAI), largely used in schools but with potential for outside school. Eight research databases were searched. Studies which were non-school, before 2000, not in English, without data and duplicates were removed, leaving 1355Â studies: online 7%, blended 13%, CSCL 7%, games 26% and CAI 47%. Overall, digital technology was more effective (better) than regular instruction in 85% of studies, 8% the same and 3% worse. Blended learning was considerably better than online learning. CAI was the most effective, with games and CSCL coming after blended learning, but of course CAI was not searched for and these were not widely used outside of schools. Primary and early years/kindergarten were most effective (87% better) and secondary/high next (80%). Although science and mathematics were the most popular subjects, English as a foreign language interventions were the most effective, then writing and STEM, thinking, arts/music, humanities, health and science, reading and maths, foreign languages and English in that order. Overall, females did better than males. âLow abilityâ children and second language learners did especially well. Disadvantaged and special educational needs/disabled students did slightly worse. Self-efficacy was highly related to better outcomes. The limitations/strengths of the research were discussed and linked back to previous literature, a critical analysis made, and detailed implications for practitioners, policy makers and future researchers outlined. Digital technology's main advantage may be the possibility for enhanced task flexibility and learner autonomy, encouraging greater self-regulation. However, this may not be an advantage for all students.
Context and implications
Rationale for this study
During the covid pandemic, schools struggled with delivering online and blended learning. This study examines whether, in the best of circumstances, online and blended learning can be effective.
Why the new findings matter
The positive findings matter because schools need to know if online and blended learning are more or less effective than regular instruction.
Implications

Androids and Autism: Non-Human Representation of Neurodivergency in Media
Guess who finally figured out where to host a pdf!
I wrote this for class last year, and consistently want to bring up the points I made in it but obviously nobody else has read it. So here we go! This paper is really important to me because I've always related to non-human characters, like the Doctor and Data Soong, more than human characters in sci-fi media.

Teamwork

Jackie and I worked on a presentation on the topic âAre teams or individuals more effectiveâ. It was challenging and exciting at the same time!
The topic was very interesting and involved a lot of research. Despite the differences in language level, time issues due to personal circumstances, long distances between places of residence, and our study load, we were able to build a proper work plan that led to what we thought was an excellent result.
What did we get as a result of the work done?
A great deal. We learned to listen to each other and to coordinate our actions together. We learned to work as a team and to respect each other's positions and decisions. According to Olsen et al (2017), a combination of individual and teamwork (as it was in our case) can be very effective because it allows you and your partner to address misconceptions and thus develop a deeper understanding. We were able to set aside time to rehearse the presentation together, which meant we became a little more adept at time management. We became more confident to perform in public, and this performance brought us unforgettable emotions! Tammy helped us to cope with the excitement with special exercises (and the excitement was enormous!). We also received positive feedback from our classmates, which was a confirmation that all our efforts were a success.

Cross checking my other invented questions against copilot, and I had a really frustrating conversation with it. For whatever reason, it insisted that CsCl has a dipole moment of 7.88 Debye, and an ionic bond character of 0.56, which is just not true. It invented 7.88 out of nowhere and linked a site that didn't say that as proof.
And it didn't even answer the question correctly! It was told to calculate the dipole moment, not look it up on some site. If a student handed that answer in, I'd give them 0.
Thankfully, if it takes me 20 minutes and specific knowledge of the problem to get LLMs to spit out the right answer and its still not worth any marks, the students might just have even more trouble.
I threw in a bonus question into the first assignment of this course I'm teaching. I'm experimenting with adding short, open ended "research" questions (basically questions that aren't explicitly taught but that you could find the answer to with a bit of digging) for bonus marks.
ChatGPT spits out a perfect answer to the question, which really doesn't bode well for my ability to design LLM resistant assignments. There's that thing where people say "if LLMs can do your homework assignments, your homework just sucks" but 10 years ago this exact question would have been fine for what I'm using it for.
