THE KING AND QUEEN OF AMESTRIS – AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INTO THE WEDDING OF THE YEAR
by Violet Whittaker and Laura Richter for PRIMA Magazine (photographs supplied by Wolffe Photography)
“We never thought this day would happen.” It’s the event Amestris has been waiting for with feverish anticipation – the wedding of FĂŒhrer Roy Mustang to Lieutenant-Colonel Riza Hawkeye. Violet Whittaker and Laura Richter follow the pair on their wedding day and gain some insight into the private lives of the most talked-about people in the country.
It is a new experience for the leader of the nation, after a frantic year of picking up the mantle left in his wake by a country transformed almost overnight into a democracy. Nobody could say that the transition, led by the former FĂŒhrer President, George Grumman, was not without its issues. But even as then-General Roy Mustang was sworn in after a historical vote that saw the Amestrian public having a say in their future for the very first time, nobody could have expected this new presidency to usher in such a feeling of hope and anticipation for what lies ahead. Mustang’s views, well-articulated from his campaign and debates, resonated deeply with the country – resulting in a landslide victory that proved the man and his vision for the future were unparalleled.
But it seems he’s met his match in his bride, the woman who has been one step behind him for almost his entire career in the military and politics. Riza Hawkeye, is a force to be reckoned with in her own right, with a much-decorated military career spanning back to her tender years as a teenager. An ever-present shadow in the background of many a press photo, Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkeye oversees her fiancé’s security detail – a job, she admits, that never seems to stop even when she’s off the clock.
On a quiet Thursday morning, the craggy, snow-dusted tops of the Cremil Ranges provide an unforgettable backdrop to today’s event. The blushing bride and groom are radiant since tying the knot in a gorgeous, relaxed and deeply personal ceremony overlooking Lake MĂ©ly, the place where they became engaged just over a year ago. It’s a sentimental moment to reflect on their romantic – and emotional – exchange of vows.
“When I saw her for the first time I choked up a bit,” the FĂŒhrer confesses to PRIMA, never taking eyes off the now First Lady. “I was blown away. I knew I would be, but more so than I thought. She was beautiful.”
There is no pomp, no circumstance and none of the stiff formalities one might expect with such a high-profile wedding. Instead, it is a ceremony filled with laughter and joy, influenced by the couple’s own down-to-earth, understated and old-fashioned romance.
Flanked by his groomsmen, a beaming Roy is positioned under an arch that was created especially for this event. The groom waits patiently as the guests take their seats. But nerves that never made themselves known on the political ground seem to take over Roy, looking exceptionally clean-cut in his Mikhail Abel suit, keeps sneaking glances at the point where Riza will emerge.
The groom has spent the morning with his old military buddies at a friend’s house in the idyllic town of Lyford, East Province, while Riza, 32, gets ready with her small contingency of bridesmaids at the nearby Watkin Lodge, where the reception will be held afterwards. In high spirits, she manages to laugh about the less-than-favourable weather forecast as the radio plays in the background. Between each song, you can hear the messages of congratulations from the public being passed along by the radio hosts.
“We’re unbelievably humbled by all the support,” she says, fiddling with her earrings – which are, in a nod to tradition, her ‘something old’. Her veil has been borrowed from her maid of honour, a modest piece with delicate lacing detailing the edges. Her new wedding dress follows in a similar fashion – a simplistic A-line design that allows the bride’s beauty to shine through. The high neck and long sleeves are a choice that will undoubtedly be imitated by other brides, despite her protests that she is nothing of a ‘fashion icon’. Her simple, uncluttered approach has quickly made an impression with the public, with garments being sold out within days after she’s pictured wearing them.
However, Riza admits that she found herself a little stumped by the ‘something blue’.
“Honestly, I should’ve just worn the dress uniform – that would’ve covered it nicely.” The pragmatism is a refreshing change that reflects not only on Riza’s character, but the overall direction in which the Mustang’s wish to guide the country towards. In the end, her bouquet has been threaded with forget-me-nots, with bright yellow splashes of coronella and pink peonies.
Before long, cars are arriving, and last-minute adjustments are being made before the bridal party sets off for Lake MĂ©ly. The freshly-woven crown of clover is the last accessory to be added, pinned into her hair with care.
As he sees his bride finally appear, Roy’s eyes light up and that familiar, dazzling grin plays across his face – though this time it is a lot softer and meant for only his bride. Guests beam, and in some cases, shed tears as Riza walks past. But the real waterworks come out when their vows are spoken, small speeches that can only scrape the surface of a relationship that has gone back decades. There is large whooping from the guests when Roy calls Riza ‘his queen’, and similar cheering when Riza takes a moment to compose herself mid-speech, blinking furiously and promising in no uncertain terms that she will follow him anywhere.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt butterflies in my stomach,” Riza tells after the ceremony, smoothing down the silk of her dress. “But it wasn’t nervousness. Why would it be?” Here, she shoots a rare smile to her new husband. “It’s like you’ve been imagining this insurmountable obstacle and then you actually see it and realise it’s not as bad as you thought. I remember seeing you standing there and all I could think was – ‘oh, there you are. I’ve been waiting for you’.”
Tumblr media
Both openly admit that marriage was never on the cards for them originally – with their positions as superior and subordinate for so long during their careers in the military, working together meant that any feelings the couple had for one another had to be buried deep, and never explored. “To say that there was a day when I didn’t love Riza Hawkeye, and then a day where I did is completely wrong,” Roy says. “Ever since I met her, I knew she would be a person who would have a monumental impact on my life. But we both knew that there were more important things to do than complain about where our choices left us.”
The two of them share a long and complicated history, most notably marred by the Ishvallan Civil War. Both served during the conflict, and the pair have always remained tight-lipped about their experiences there. But the choice to share their wedding with the public was not an easy one to make.
“We appreciated that there was a lot of interest,” Roy says diplomatically. “And we wanted to acknowledge the widespread support we’ve received following the announcement of our engagement.”
The following reception is rumoured to be legendary, but strictly a private affair. For the guests invited, it is sure to be a party filled with plenty of laughs and stories (both inspiring and embarrassing) about the couple. For the rest of us? Perhaps a reminder that love can be found and expressed in unassuming ways, and that you don’t need big flashy displays to reflect the years of quiet devotion that all of us can only dream of one day having.
The entire team at PRIMA Magazine wishes the newlyweds all the best in their new marriage.
(this piece was originally written for @royaizine and i finally remembered to upload it here! this is in the same fashion as my ‘hawk’s eye: definitive interview’ piece. please go and check out what everyone else did in the zine! there’s some truly spectacular writing and art created bc of it <3)

The Barnes and Noble English edition
The French Livres de Poche edition, which is my fanfic reference copy, hence the million sticky notes

So, I saw a tweet saying "What if Launch (Dragon Ball) and Cremil (Wadanohara) swapped clothes?" I never heard of Cremil or the anime that they're in, but I had to draw Launch wearing their clothes.

oh yes, like probably only after like 1 or 2 cups xD
but dude, imagine they were at a christmas party or something, her brother Leo would be like “lol, Oreline, try this”... she’d like it and ask for more and he’d give her 1 or 2 more at max to see how she reacts (while also keeping a close eye on her and stuff)
and after the 3rd cup Oreline would start wandering around the party trying to sniff all the decorations and start telling every single person there how pretty they looked tonight
then mom and dad, Porcello and Cremille, would quietly confront Leo and be like “Leo wthell, u can’t just get your little sister drunk, especially at a public party, that’s so irresponsible” and “ah bugger, now one of us has to take her home”
then once they were all home after the party, after tucking now-sleepy Oreline in bed, and after giving Leo a firm talking to, Porcello and Cremille would retreat to their own room
and Cremille would be like “y’know... you gotta admit seeing Rel like that was pretty flippin‘ hilarious” and Porcello would quietly be like “......................................pfft yES, but THAT’S nOT THE POIN T”

don’t let my ink fade
i wrote some royai angst. title taken from the cale hawkins’ song.
warning for mentions of abuse
He told me that alchemy makes monsters out of men, you know.
It comes as no surprise to Roy Mustang that the wretched case of Shou and Nina Tucker affects some members of his team in more ways than one.
The tragic, entirely avoidable death of Nina Tucker hangs over East Headquarters like the storms they often get in the summer: a thick, oppressive silence reigns where normally there is barely-contained chaos. While the city thrived despite the oncoming storm spilling over the Cremil Ranges, headquarters itself had practically come to a complete standstill in a matter of a few hours.
Over one-third of the non-sworn workers alone had called in their sick leave that afternoon. In an unplanned, but urgent meeting with the other high command stationed at Eastern Headquarters, it was agreed that they’d run on essentially a skeleton shift for the next day. People were in shock, reasoned General Grumman, and needed time to process what had occurred. Denying requests en masse would only encourage resentment. However, precautions would need to be taken, as the East was currently in the midst of an active recruitment drive. It would inevitably face some resistance in the wake of this
 unfortunate scenario, sneered Lieutenant-Colonel Matthews.
Roy is well aware of the furtive glances towards him in that room at the insinuation. He is not the idiot most of them assume he is. The writing is clearly on the wall here: you fucked up monumentally, Colonel Mustang.
He’ll bear the public responsibility, make the necessary appeasing appearances. Actual repercussions won’t occur, not ever. Not his fault that the brass ignored his comments on Tucker’s application, had ignored the intel he had inevitably amassed for a man who had applied for the State Alchemist program over fourteen times. For such a sudden development in Tucker’s research from one year to the next, it only raised alarm bells for him. The leap Tucker had made in his research went beyond what even Roy knew himself capable of, and he had been given notes to guide him along.
But his comments fell on deaf ears, his preliminary application for rejection subsequently overruled. It can talk you idiot – the chimera can actually talk!
Sure, and all it says is ‘I want to die’.
He is utterly engrossed in Tucker’s file when the phone goes off. He barely has to incline his head and she understands what he is asking – Hawkeye rises from the couch, papers fluttering down around her like skittish birds. The nasal tone of the phone is harsh through his empty office, echoing starkly against the walls. Roy turns his attention back to Tucker’s successful application.
“...we cannot comment on this matter. Thank you.” The Lieutenant's tone is devoid of any emphasis, but the manner in which she practically slams the receiver back into its cradle makes him pause.
Her knuckles are still gripping the handle of the phone tightly, almost blanched white when he looks up. “Are they sniffing already?”
“Sewing-Life is being traded for Butcherer. It’s going to hit the morning newsstands. Headquarters cannot afford for so many to be absent tomorrow, personal inclinations aside.” Her tone is deceptively casual, but he’d be a fool not to pick up on the tension lingering within her words.
Roy sets down the file and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Our hands are tied either way Lieutenant.” It’s difficult not to let frustration seep into his voice. She doesn’t deserve his ire directed her way, not now.
Her clipped “Yes, sir,” tells him she won’t tolerate his bullshit beyond her pay check today.
In hindsight, he should have been quicker on the uptake, pieced together why this case in particular had rankled his aide so much. But then Scar had come along, and all thoughts of approaching Hawkeye had promptly gone out the window with the resulting chaos.
The debrief takes longer than he likes, made more complicated by the amount of paperwork he’s going to need to do to keep certain secrets well
secret. Over fifty of his men had seen the ruined remains of Alphonse’s armour – until now information that was closely-guarded, and very much on a need-to-know basis – and the last thing he needs is the papers having not only a ‘House of Horrors’ angle for the next week, but another series demonising Ishvallans because of the actions of a lone wolf.
He finds her in his office later that night, her back to the door, leaning against his desk and looking out over the parade grounds. It’s still raining heavily, and he thinks that the thunderous sound of the storm outside masks his entrance. If she hears him, she certainly makes no indication otherwise.
The Elric brothers
well, perhaps it was logical that his mind immediately went to their well being. They had been the closest involved in the situation. The sudden appearance of Scar, the revelation that he was an Ishvallan man with a vengeance carved into his very skin – Roy knows these are valid reasons on their own, but it does not mean his failure to check in on his team is any less forgivable.
He knows First Lieutenant Hawkeye is a strong soldier, unfazed and stoic. Her apparent quietness in response to the tragic fate of Nina Tucker may have fooled others into assuming once more that she had compartmentalised, had tucked away this sorry event for unpacking at a more agreeable time. Roy knows her better. A small part of him aches to reassure her through touch, even as scant as a gloved hand on her shoulder, however briefly before propriety and decorum settle across them once more. Instead, he mirrors her position against the desk and carefully peels off his gloves, tucking them into his pocket.
The way her voices hitches makes his heart squeeze tightly in response. “I thought I would be lucky enough to not see any echoes of my father anymore. I suppose that was foolish of me.”
Roy doesn’t have the words – there are no words, no sentences he can formulate that could even begin to acknowledge what she’s referring to. How can he possibly relate? He had practically been the apple of her father’s eye, before his enlistment. She would never go so far as to condemn her father, but Roy would do it happily in her stead. Years of emotional abuse and distance was just as horrific as the ink he left on her back.
“He told me alchemy made monsters out of men, you know. It always had this faint tone of self-deprecation to it, but
” she trails off, head hanging low. Roy realises she is holding his pocket watch, and she fascinates herself with the peaks and valleys of the military insignia.
“Is there even going to be an autopsy?”
The truth is bitter on his tongue. “Not for her. Major Armstrong's hypothesis that Scar is using at least the deconstruction part of a transmutation attempt will need to be verified, however.”
Riza nods shortly, throwing her head back swiftly to stare at the ceiling. He pointedly ignores the tears running freely down her cheeks.
“She would’ve gone along with it. Right until the very end. Anything to bring back the father she remembered.”
“You shouldn't do this to yourself.” We had no way to know, dies on his lips, because he did know. Suspected, at least. He’s well-aware that the Elric brothers hold themselves accountable for what has happened, but in truth the blame falls squarely back to him. He could have kicked up more of a fuss from the review panel’s decision. He could have required Tucker to provide quarterly reports.
This particular brand of madness, however – Roy is well-acquainted with it. So is Riza, crying openly next to him. They know they couldn’t have caught him – not before the damage had already been done.
The fact that it had happened twice, right under their noses, is the salt in a wound that has been bleeding slowly for years.
Riza blinks rapidly, and wipes at her face roughly. “I’ll go enquire with forensics. We might be able to give her a burial at least.” She passes his watch back to him, and for those brief, few seconds where their fingers overlap one another, Roy is almost tempted to engulf her into an embrace and never let her go.
Instead, he nods, and pockets the watch. He doesn’t have the heart to inform her that the body has already been disposed of.
She’ll forgive him in time.
