Things I Find Wrong With Lore Olympus

1. Minthe

I'm just gonna address the elephant in the room when it comes to the webtoon with this one, so don't come bitching at me. When I first started reading LO, I was puzzled that Hades and Minthe were dating in the beginning, but since this was a retelling of Hades and Persephone and Greek mythology all together, I didn't think much of it. When I researched stories and articles about Hades and Persephone, she's not that big of a deal. Yes, she seduced Hades and was turned into a mint plant by Persephone, but that's just it. She's a minor nymph in Greek mythology. Someone on the unpopularloreolympus subreddit said that Rachel Smythe got offended by the Hercules cartoon series in which Hades and Persephone are father and daughter. It's most likely that she got offended by Hades and his affair with Minthe, and so she created a punching bag of a character. Not only that, but her skin tone is red because red is evil to her, yet Hermes is red. I'm not saying she has to be any shade of green but make it make sense!

2. Leuce

Like Minthe, she was created to be a punching bag character for the fandom. Not only is she not canon to Greek mythology, but she didn't exist until the 1500s by an Italian poet. Rachel probably got offended by this as well and did the same thing with her.

3. Misuse of Allusions

What is an allusion? The simplest answer is that it's a figure of speech that makes a reference to literature, people, places, characters, etc. An example of this is from the ABC show Once Upon a Time. Zelena The Wicked Witch of West basically became Persephone she and Hades fell in love. A couple of other examples of allusions of mythology are Naruto and Attack on Titan. Naruto uses Japanese mythology for their power ups and other things. Attack on Titan uses Norse mythology to explain the founding Titan Ymir. Lore Olympus, however, does this very poorly. It might just be a minor detail, but the biggest offense of this is Hera.

I was shocked when I saw that Hades and Hera had once been a thing and were madly in love. Then Echo came along, and Narcissus was nowhere in sight. Basically, Hera replaced Leuce and Narcissus. Leuce replaced Minthe. Morpheus was depicted as a woman or a poor depiction of transgenderism. The founding titan Ymir Fritz was an allusion of Ymir from Norse mythology. Ymir from Norse mythology was the creation God. Ymir Fritz was a little girl who died as a woman. Her three daughters are based on Odin and his two brothers. Ymir from Norse mythology was male. Morpheus from Greek mythology was male. If you're going to make a comic on mythology, then you should get the details of gods and goddess right.

4. Erasure of Sexuality

Lore Olympus was first posted onto Webtoon in 2018. This was during a time when writers of movies, TV shows, series, cartoons, and anime were turning canonically straight and asexual characters gay and lesbian. There was also a very biphobic and transphobic edge to it as well. This was done in order for the creator to appear progressive. This was done to Athena, Hestia, Hera, Echo, and Morpheus. Athena and Hestia are both asexual in Greek mythology, and Hera is straight. Again, Morpheus was male. Echo is also straight as she was madly in love with a man who was madly in love with himself. Athena and Morpheus are both poor representations of transgenderism. Especially Morpheus. They're not trans but the fact that their genders were changed is saying something.

5. Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss

Lore Olympus claims to be feminist but it's not. Others have explained this in great detail. Persephone before she was married to Hades was actually a much different person. She had her own goals and aspirations. She didn't want to be known as a nepo baby. She was trying to find her own identity. She even begged Hades not to gouge out Alex's eye, but Hades went through with it. But then she started dating Hades, and things went downhill for both of them. Yes, they are the healthiest couple in Greek mythology, but Lore Olympus doesn't depict it as such.

Hades basically became an abusive slave owner, and Persephone became an immature girlboss. When she ran into Alex at the mall and intimated him, she looked as if she would wait until his shift was over to stalk him, corner him, and beat him up. The same with Leuce.

6. Rooting for the wrong characters

From the beginning, readers are led to believe that Minthe is the antagonist. At least one of them. But then Persephone changed drastically for the worst, and soon, people found themselves rooting for her.

7. No other retellings of Greek mythology

Lore Olympus was advertised as being about Hades and Persephone. But the title alone sounded as if it was going to be about others' myths as well. The only retelling of mythology was Eros and Psyche. This is due to Hades and Persephone being a part of their myth. But both myths were dragged for far too long. Psyche revealing that she was turned into a nymph by Aphrodite didn't feel exciting. The same goes for Gaia telling Hades and Persephone that Persephone has to spend six months out of the year with her mother for spring and summer and with Hades during fall and winter. Both of these plots could've been easily wrapped up in season, and seasons 2 and 3 could have been about other myths.

1- Yes, all echidnas - from Knuckles' tribe - were Wood Nymphs.

2- Yes, and Knuckles still guards the Master Emerald at Angel Island.

3- Cream is in the AU!!! I just have yet to draw her, and shes a mundane. Not sure ig Omega will appear just yet.

4- The Chaotix are still detectives, think Kemono Jihen: they take care of supernatural incidents, sorta like vigilantes(is that the correct term? ^^") They're also family, Vector is the single dad of these two. lol

5- You got flesh-eating zombies... and then you have Gadget, who personally loves pastries. XD

6- Silver is learning about 'vampire veganism' with Espio.

7/8- Sort of, a sentiment's blood not only make them stronger but they're also well fed. Vegan vampires are weaker since they don't consume live blood.

9- Yes vampires are weak to sunlight, but it's mostly based on their diet. Those who drink live blood might get hurt real badly, and those who are vegan usually have way higher tolerance to sunlight just getting itchy.

10- Still reworking/revamping The Order

11- Demons are either sinners or born-demons. Demons can be summoned by mundanes, sinners cannot.

12- Surge and Kit are born demons, they got summoned by Starline.

13- Gaia is a single entity like a God, Iblis and Solaris do not exist in this story.

14- You don't need to kill the previous High Howler to become one, you can earn the title, it's not well known how to do so, but you must not have killed innocent people in order to earn it. Or you could be a High Howler's Heir and inherit the 'throne' when they die.

15- Still working on fairies, but they're mostly chill, being able to change between fairy form (tiny) and mobian form. Fairies have powers related to the elements/nature.

16- Fairies are supernaturals, Sticks just never took fairy form/'unlocked' her powers so she never figured out she was a fairy herself! XD

17- Morning Glory is currently trying to track down Mimic, since he's going around causing mayhem n all.

18- Amy's pack got 7 members, 2 of which are demons (Surge and Kitsunami). Eric is an omega, he's on his own, and Ashe is a mobian, he didn't get turned.

How long have I been in this fandom?

- Since 2021! Towards late 2020, a friend introduced it to me. They showed pictures of the characters and I was like “alright I’m invested 👁️👁️👍” the anime then came out and I watched the whole thing in one day. That night, I continued reading the manga and finished it until it was the recent chapter at that time.

Any complaints about the manga and/or fandom?

- The manga has been falling off recently. I’ve gotten so bored with the rounds lately. I’m going to say it… ROUND 9 AND 10 HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY BORING NEXT TO ROUND 1! Y’all can come and fight me in the comments all you want but I’m seriously just saying my opinion 😭 Round 2 to 7 have gotten me on my toes, anxious on what happens next! Round 8 was alright. There barely any women in the manga/anime and they’ve been reduced to fan service 😐

- The fandom is… interesting. I’ve seen p3d0s, tracers and just rude ppl in general. I’ve tried to friend people in the Japanese side of the fandom cuz 1. I’m Japanese 2. Why not? But they all turned out to be inc3st obsessed weirdos.

Thoughts on spin offs?

The Lu Bu one was kinda boring except for the Lu Bu childhood part. (Holy crap his dad is hot) The Jack one was kinda boring and I stopped reading it cuz I was confused. The recent one… I’m sorry… it sucks. I don’t like it. I’m not interested in any of the spin offs.

I like to reflect at the end of the year, so I wanted to showcase the first project I worked on in 2023! This is my Goddess sticker series, which you can find on my shop 💜

Goddesses:

Circe - A greek goddess born from the nymph Perse and the titan Helios. Circe has vast knowledge of potions, herbs, and animals. In Homer's Odyssey, she turns Odysseus’s men into pigs.

Ma'at - Egyptian goddess of truth, justice, balance, and order. In death, you must balance your heart against her feather to determine if you are worthy of the afterlife.

Pele - Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, fire, and creator of the Hawaiian islands. She resides in Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes on earth.

Morrigan - Irish goddess of war, death, and destiny. Seeing Morrigan in battle was terrifying, as it meant impending doom on enemies. She often appears as a crow.

Sedna - Inuit goddess of the sea and marine animals. Unwilling to marry, her father threw her into the sea. When she tried to climb back on the boat, he cut off her fingers. Her fingers became marine life and she became their guardian.

The Timeless Realm and the Council of Elders

The Timeless Realm is a place outside of time, where the Council of Elders resides and presides, and where the Water Stars are kept save. It was created by the first Fairy, Arcadia and turned into a timeless place by the Ancestral Witches. Floating above lake Roccaluce, but invisible until one is able to open its gates.

In order to get inside, a magic user has to prove their noble heart and pure soul, which only works if they never used dark magic. To those the gates will open and lead into a Crystal Labyrinth, where they have to make a choice which proves one cares about the world more than they do themselves.

When the right choice has been made, the magic user meets the Council of Elders.

Arcadia, the first Fairy and creator of the Timeless Realm. Omnia, the first Fairy who gained the last transformation, Faerix and connected to the Magical Core of Arcadia, turning into the first Nymph. She is the protector of the Essence of Magic, the Leader of the Nine Nymphs of Magix and the founder of Alfea, college of Fairies. Chiron, the Pegataur Elder. The first Wizard who perfected the use of Wild Magic and turned themselfs into a new creature which is part human, part animal. Hagen, the Paladin of Spell-Blades. He created the nine legendary staff-weapons of the Dragon's Sparks, founded the first group to be Company of Light and Red Fountain, college for Paladins and Wizards. Daemon, the Dæmon Elder, who was the first Witcher to summon their Familiar and reached the High Witch transformation without the use of Dark Magic. He was also the founder of Cloud Tower, college for Witch/ers.

Each one of them guards one of the five Water Stars.

OOC: What was the inspiration for Kore and Callum’s story? I found it extremely compelling, both emotional and symbolic, and I was wondering if it drew inspiration from any particular sources.

From the creator of the character - The concept of their couple as "Kore-sun" and "Callum-sea" is inspired by Helios and Rhodes, the titan of the sun and the sea nymph who were happily married. [Helios literally named the island after his wife].

But their story is inspired by full-length anime films - "Ride Your Wave", "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", "Whisper of the Heart" and "To The Forest of Firefly Lights", also other full-length anime with a romantic bent. I took inspiration from them and tried to make Kore and Callum's tragic love story as similar to them as possible.

I'm glad you liked their story, Kore and Callum are my cute little kids :)

What do you think of giving the goat nature or plant-based powers due to goats' connections to fauns, satyrs, and the Greek God Pan creator of panic and companion of the nymphs, and the god of the wilderness, shepherds and flocks, sex, fertility, nature, fields, groves, glens, rustic music, and impromptus.

I also considered doing dream/imagination based powers.

By that, Goat could also be tied to thunder and lightning and storms cause Thor the God of Thunder is also tied to goats. Could also do them tied to fire, shadows, trickery, and temptation as goats are also tied to the Devil.

Honestly, for plant related powers, I'd give that to Bee. They are tied to the sun, which plants need to survive, and are one of the biggest pollinators of the world. It also works off bees symbolism of nurture and growth, and community, as trees are recorded to have their own communities too.

Goat I'm ok being tied to painting and creation, but I'd do a more creative spin for it, have what Goat paints be tied to animation or function. At most, I'd tweak the name of the power to Artifice, playing off it being artistic and cunning; Genesis specifically works off generating an item and that's the third miraculous to do so and eeeehhh..... either way, painting power you could do so much with.

What Goat paints could become "alive", like what Sai from Naruot can do. This could be use offensively, for gathering info, or even transportation; it all comes down to what the user paints.

Another idea is making Looney Tunes references.

Not to say it's exactly like this, but the idea is like, paint a door on a locked building and it function as a door to the user to get into that building.

This power could also be used to be an Okami reference.

A power to paint and create through it could be so much fun and have so much potential. And the nice thing is that this power could work off a lot of aspects to Goat:

The Chinese Zodiac Goat is an artist.

It plays off goats as cunning and notorious escape artists.

It plays off expression through art and creation that you can tie back to Pan.

You could also tie this power to (black) magic.

And also Zodiac Aries being determined and defying odds, aiming eye and having passion.

And biggest thing is that this power defies gravity/the norm. Cause goats do what they want. Goats don't care.

So I am good with Goat having a power tied to painting. I'd just massively tweak it.

In the Hills of Vermont - Lilia Tse

The soundscape which I observed and recorded is set in the hills of Vermont, next to a large and sparsely populated lake. Vacationers who flee the winter cold have returned to their summer homes, filling the lake with movement: paddle boards, fishing boats, and kayaks weave through the water most afternoons.

It is the perfect place for a morning swim. In the winter, when it is frozen, the sound is that of wind and the deep creak of the ice. Fishermen erect their huts on the lake, boring deep holes in the ice, to pull the fish up out of. It freezes so thickly that trucks can drive over it, leaving tire tracks in the snow. Winters have been getting warmer since my parents moved here twenty three years ago. Even then, the old men reminisced about winters where their spit froze before it hit the ground. Times when the snowfall was so high that it reached the roof, and leaving the house was a matter of excavation. The number of years in which the lake freezes deep enough to drive over are dwindling. Last February a truck fell through.

But winter is months away, and the warm sun is slanting through the pines. Now I am visiting my mother, who is renting a small apartment by the lakeshore from the grandmother of my childhood friend. It is a lake and a house which I visited often as a child. My friend and I would pull the long seaweed out of the lake and twist it around our bodies, adorning ourselves and pretending to be mermaids or lake nymphs. This summer is the first time I have been here in over ten years. At the time of recording I am laying in a hammock, in the late afternoon, at the end of summer. The eve of my 24th birthday.

The slender white pines bend and sway in the breeze, their needles rubbing together to create a gentle whispering sound. White pines are the first trees to move into cleared spaces. In fields which have gone to seed they pioneer the horizon, coming in after the wildflowers and tall grass to stand guard. Since they require lots of space and sunlight, they are eventually crowded out by trees with a higher shade tolerance. Along the shores of lakes, where high winds lead to trees falling and leaving space, white pines line up to soak in the sun. Further up the bank the woods are thicker and darker. Pineless. The forest floor is thick with underbrush. In the cool, damp darkness tiny frogs find their home. Their croaks mingle with the sound of crickets, contributing to the soft animal choir found in the recording. It is a sound that has accompanied all of my late afternoons around these woods.

A wind blows through, and the recording picks up a pressing sound, like that of shifting one’s head against a pillow. The sound is more pronounced than those which underlie it, brushing over the soundscape in broad, unpredictable strokes. The soundscape is punctuated by the rhythmic creak of the hammock, a soporific sound, like a cradle’s rocking. I am lulled into a floating state, made physical by the hammock and mental by the sounds which are so familiar to me. Sounds which indicate the steady presence of the woods which I miss so when I feel compressed by the city’s constant noise. In class we discussed our frequent need to block out sound, to control it so as to protect our mental wellbeing. Here I have no need for headphones, no desire to shut the world out. Rather, the sounds act as a balm, soothing me. My muscles relax.

I am reminded of the seaside soundscape which we listened to together in class. The way the creator wove images of long-ago family suppers by the seashore into her soundscape struck me, and I try to imagine life here before the lake was populated. Before trees were cut down for the dirt roads, which thread their way around the lake, there would have been no soft hum of cars in the wooded hills behind me. Nor would there have been the lapping of waves at the shore from the bulky boats, pulling waterskiers swiftly across the water. Sounds would have been made differently, by mouths singing and speaking, feet stomping or stepping. There would have been the daily crackle of a fire, as people prepared food and warmed themselves beside its glow. The dull thud of metal axes hitting wood arrived with the French, who colonized Canada and Vermont. Then the blast of gunpowder. I remember the shooting range down the road from my house and how the shots produced that sharp, booming sound. Similar to that of fireworks. Or thunder.

Wilson Harris’ text, The Music of Living Landscapes, explores what Harris calls the ‘resonance’ which landscapes hold. To Harris, a landscape is not a passive backdrop for conscious life, but rather a living space, in possession of their own language. I am reminded of this language in my hammock, and I am reminded of Joan Didion’s book of essays South and West, in which she states of her sense of place in the West that “part of it is simply what looks right to the eye, sounds right to the ear. I am at home in the West. The hills of the coastal ranges look “right” to me, the particular flat expanse of the Central Valley comforts my eye. The place names have the ring of real places to me. I can pronounce the name of the rivers, and recognize the common trees and snakes. I am easy here in a way that I am not easy in other places.” The name Vermont comes from French for green mountains. The name reflects the endless and astounding greenery. Encyclopedia Brittanica says ‘Connecticut’ is the Algonquian word for ‘land on the long tidal river’. As a child, I liked to pronounce every letter: connect-ee-cut. The Connecticut river is the dividing line between Vermont and New Hampshire in our area. The connecting cut. As Harris wrote, the landscape holds a silent language of its own, which we attempt to understand and translate. Hearing the whip of the wind, the creak of the hammock, the toss of the pines and the croak of the frogs, I feel, as Didion felt, that the place names reflect something true.

There's a Problem With That AI Portrait App: It Can Undress People Without Their Consent

If you've been on the internet pretty much at all over the last few days, it's very likely that you've seen a rush of people posting fantastical, anime-inspired digital portraits of themselves.

These "Magic Avatars" — as their creator, a photo-editing app called Lensa AI, has dubbed them — have taken the internet by storm, their virality hand-in-hand with that of ChatGPT, OpenAI's next-gen AI chatbot.

Indeed, it seems a fitting way to end what's been a banner year for artificial intelligence. Text-to-image generators, most notably OpenAI's DALL-E and Midjourney's Stable Diffusion, have disrupted creative industries; a record label unveiled — and quickly did away with — an AI rapper; machine learning has been used to generate full-length fake "conversations" between living celebrities and dead ones; and who could forget LaMDA, the Google chatbot that a rogue engineer said had gained sentience?

While experts have been tinkering with the foundational tech for years, a few substantial breakthroughs — combined with a lot of investment dollars — are now resulting in an industry rush to market. As a result, a lot of new tech is getting bottled into consumer-facing products.

There's just one problem: neither the products — nor the public — are ready.

Take those "Magic Avatars," which on face value seem relatively harmless. After all, there's nothing wrong with imagining yourself as a painted nymph or elf or prince or whatever else the app will turn you into. And unlike text-to-image generators, you can only work within the boundaries of pictures that you already have on hand.

But as soon as the "avatars" began to go viral, artists started sounding the alarm, noting that Lensa offered little protection for the creators whose art may have been used to train the machine. Elsewhere, in a darker turn, despite Lensa's "no nudes" use policy, users found it alarmingly simple to generate nude images — not only of themselves, but of anyone they had photos of.

"The ease with which you can create images of anyone you can imagine (or, at least, anyone you have a handful of photos of), is terrifying," wrote Haje Jan Kamps for Techcrunch. Kamps tested the app's ability to generate pornography by feeding it poorly photoshopped images of celebrities' faces onto nude figures. Much to his horror, the photoshopped images handily disabled any of the app's alleged guardrails.

"Adding NSFW content into the mix, and we are careening into some pretty murky territory very quickly: your friends or some random person you met in a bar and exchanged Facebook friend status with may not have given consent to someone generating soft-core porn of them," he added.

Terrible stuff, but that's not even as bad as it gets. As writer Olivia Snow discovered when uploading her childhood photos of herself to the "Magic Avatars" program, Lensa's alleged guardrails failed to even protect against the production of child pornography — a horrifying prospect on such a widely-available and easy-to-use app.

"I managed to piece together the minimum 10 photos required to run the app and waited to see how it transformed me from awkward six-year-old to fairy princess," she wrote for Wired. "The results were horrifying."

"What resulted were fully-nude photos of an adolescent and sometimes childlike face but a distinctly adult body," she continued. "This set produced a kind of coyness: a bare back, tousled hair, an avatar with my childlike face holding a leaf between her naked adult's breasts."

Kamps' and Snow's accounts both underscore an inconvenient reality of all this AI tech: it's chronically doing things its makers never intended, and sometimes even evading safety constraints they attempted to impose. It gives a sense that the AI industry is pushing faster and farther than what society — or even their own tech — is ready for. And with results like these, that's deeply alarming.

In a statement to Techcrunch, Lensa placed the blame on the user, arguing that any pornographic images are "the result of intentional misconduct on the app." That line echoes a wider industry sentiment that there are always going to be bad actors out there, and bad actors will do what bad actors will do. Besides, as another common excuse goes, anything that these programs might produce could just as well be created by a skilled photoshop user.

Both of these arguments have some weight, at least to an extent. But neither changes the fact that, like other AI programs, Lensa's program makes it a lot easier for bad actors to do what bad actors might do. Generating believable fake nudes or high-quality depictions of child sexual abuse imagery just went from being something that few could do convincingly to being something that anyone armed with the right algorithm can easily create.

There's also an unmistakable sense of Pandora's box opening. Even if the Lensas of the world lock down their tech, it's inevitable that others will create knockoff algorithms that bypass those safety features.

As Lensa's failures have so clearly demonstrated, the potential for real people to experience real and profound harm as a result of the premature introduction of AI tools — image generators and beyond — is growing rapidly. The industry, meanwhile, appears to be taking a "sell now, ask questions later" approach, seemingly keener on beating competitors to VC funding than to ensuring that these tools are reasonably safe.

It's worth noting that nonconsensual porn is just one of the many risk factors, here. The potential for the quick and easy production of political misinformation is another major concern. And as far as text generators go? Educators are shaking in their boots.

As it stands, a tool as seemingly innocuous as "Magic Avatars" is yet another reminder that, while it's already changing the world, AI is still an experiment — and collateral damage isn't a prospective threat. It's a given.
