Eagles-Cowboys Week 11 Live Thread
After last week’s bye, the Eagles return to action on Sunday Night Football as they take on the Dallas Cowboys down in Jerry World.
On the injury front, Alshon Jeffery (ankle) is questionable to play, but Doug Pederson expects him to play. Adam Schefter confirmed the news earlier today as well. Ronald Darby and Zach Ertz will play. That’s all for the active Eagles.
For the Cowboys, it’s a little more extensive. First off, Ezekiel Elliott is in the second game of a six-game suspension. He’s somewhere training. As for non-suspended players, linebacker Sean Lee and kicker Dan Bailey are also out. Left tackle Tyron Smith, safety Jeff Heath, defensive tackle Maliek Collins, and backup tight end Geoff Swaim are all listed as questionable. Smith won’t play tonight, according to Ian Rapoport, which means Byron Bell will get the start. Heath’s status is up in the air, but he didn’t practice on Friday.
We’ll continually update this post as the game goes along. And check out our predictions to see how good (or probably bad) we guessed this game.
7:08 – the roof is openAs of now, .
7:00 – Inactives are out. Wendell Smallwood is the odd back out, as some expected when the Eagles traded for Jay Ajayi before the Denver game. Newly signed veterans Will Beatty and Dannell Ellerbe are also out.

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) November 20, 2017
As for the Cowboys, Bailey, Heath, Lee, and Smith are out as expected. Darren McFadden is a healthy scratch. He only got one carry for a two-yard loss last week against Atlanta:

How NFL players are dealing with record cold temperatures for Week 17 games
Frigid temperatures are making things uncomfortable around the NFL in Week 17.
It’s awfully damn cold on this last NFL Sunday of the 2017 regular season. Teams throughout the Midwest, Northeast, and even the South are taking special precautions against the record-setting low temperatures.
Browns left tackle-turned-team meteorologist Joe Thomas explained how players will deal with the cold temperatures on Sunday. Look for players to have holes, like pockets, cut into their jerseys. They’ll have hand warmers in there to keep their fingers from freezing.
“It’s very cold.” Our Chief Meteorologist @joethomas73 has your gameday weather: http://pic.twitter.com/BjIsCEs8Cy
— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) December 31, 2017
Even the Southeast is affected. The Falcons took special precautions considering Atlanta’s projected high of 40 degrees on Sunday. They shut down outdoor fan activities and encouraged fans to stay warm and watch the 1 p.m. ET games inside the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium instead.
Exactly how cold is it?
Sunday is uncomfortably chilly for teams hosting games in outdoor stadiums this week based on the forecasted high temperatures. The wind chills are even worse.
The coldest game: It should be Jets vs. Patriots, which features a high of 13 degrees ad a wind chill as low as -8 degrees. Tom Brady’s all bundled up from head to toe for this one.
Bill Belichick started the day dressed for much warmer weather.
It’s 10 degrees out and Bill Belichick just walked onto the field in shorts and a t-shirt http://pic.twitter.com/wH4oHOAsZt
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) December 31, 2017
It didn’t last.

— Ben Volin (@BenVolin) December 31, 2017
Jets safety Jamal Adams was completely unfazed by the cold.
.@TheAdams_era doesn’t seem to care about the weather http://pic.twitter.com/gIFzR86meZ
— SportsNet New York (@SNYtv) December 31, 2017
Closest to average: It’s a little easier for players in Browns vs. Steelers (high of 15 degrees, wind chill as low as -6 degrees), Washington vs. Giants (high of 17 degrees, wind chill between 0-5 degrees), and Bengals vs. Ravens (high of 25 degrees, wind chill of 16 degrees). It’s frosty, but all of these players are at least used to cold climates this time of year.
Steelers safety Robert Golden looks like he’s enjoying it.
Cold don’t bother us. http://pic.twitter.com/4q0Ckru4us
— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) December 31, 2017
The Eagles are into it, too.
Football weather.#FlyEaglesFly http://pic.twitter.com/53XQu8wCqc
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 31, 2017
It’s been a while since Washington has played a game in this weather. The 16-degree temperature at kickoff made it the coldest game Washington has played since they beat the Bears 21-17 in the divisional round of the 2010 postseason.
Biggest shock for road teams: Cowboys vs. Eagles features a high of 20 degrees. That’s an adjustment for a team that plays their home games in a dome in Dallas. And the visiting Jaguars left behind a high of 57 degrees in Jacksonville to take on the Titans in 28-degree weather.
This isn’t the coldest game the Cowboys have ever played.
It’s currently 17 degrees with a high of 20. If that holds, today will tie the 5th coldest regular-season game in Cowboys history. Coldest was Chicago 2013 (8 degrees). #cowboyswire
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) December 31, 2017
Even with heated fields to soften the ground, warm benches, and heaters on the sideline, it’s terribly cold for these players this week.
Why is it so cold?
An Arctic blast has swept down into the United States, bringing frigid weather to a huge chunk of the country. It’s brought record low temperatures and dropped the wind chill to well below zero in the Midwest and Northeast. Even the southeastern United States has wind chills in the low teens on Sunday, which will continue into the New Year.
Will any of these be the coldest NFL game on record?
No. That high — or low, depending on how you want to look at it — mark was set back in 1967, and it will be a tough one to topple.
That was the Ice Bowl between the Cowboys and Packers at Lambeau Field exactly 50 years ago on Sunday. It was the NFL Championship Game, which was basically an NFC Championship before the Super Bowl era. The Packers fought through -13 degree temperatures and a wind chill of -48 degrees to get the 21-17 win over the Cowboys.
If you’re working off of wind chill, the coldest game on record was the 1982 AFC Championship Game between the Chargers and the Bengals in Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. It was aptly nicknamed the Freezer Bowl for the -9 degree temperatures and the wind chill of -59 degrees. The Bengals, who were a bit more used to the weather than the Chargers, got the 27-7 win.
Compared to those two, this weekend’s temperatures are downright balmy. But be sure to bundle up if you’re catching any of Sunday’s games.

Cowboys-Raiders wasn't the first time NFL refs measured a 1st down with a piece of paper
And it’s legal!
In Sunday night’s game between the Cowboys and the Raiders in Oakland, a first down was measured in a way we’re not used to seeing — with a piece of paper. While everyone acted like we’ve never seen it happen before, it actually has.
With the chain lined up next to the football, referee Gene Steratore pulled out a folded-up piece of paper, put it between the ball and stick, and they touched.
It was too close to see with the naked eye, but with the paper touching both the ball and the stick, the Cowboys had their first down.
The Cowboys were able to keep their drive alive thanks to the first down, and Dan Bailey’s field goal would end up being the difference in the 20-17 win.
It’s not the first time this has been done.
In 2013, the Browns went for a fourth-and-4 at the Ravens’ 39-yard line down 7-6 early in the fourth quarter (hard to imagine no one remembered a Browns-Ravens game!).
Brandon Weeden hit Jordan Cameron on a crossing route, but it was so close that referee Bill Vinovich used a piece of paper to see if the nose of the ball aligned with the marker.
Unlike the Cowboys, the Browns were marked short, and ended up losing the game 14-6.
So is any of this even legal?
Apparently it is. NFL spokesman Michael Signora told the Beacon Journal in a 2013 email that it’s within the rules.
“Once the chains are in place, the referee looks at the ball in relation to the line to gain for a first down, as indicated by the chains, and then makes the call,” he said. “Though it is very unusual to see the referee use a card to aid in the measurement, there is nothing that prohibits it in the rules.”
Former NFL official and supervisor of officials Jim Daopoulos told ProFootballTalk officials are “never allowed to use anything other than their eyes to make that decision.” But much like Signora in 2013, he acknowledged that there was nothing that prohibits it in the rules.
Steratore explained his reasoning to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “The ball was touching the pole,” Steratore said. “I put the card in there, and as soon as it touched, it was nothing more than a reaffirmation. The decision was made based on my visual from the top looking down and the ball touching the front of the pole.”
It’s not something we’re used to seeing, but if it works, it works. Of course Jerry Jones was happy with the result:
Jerry Jones was asked if Gene Steratore’s folded measurement paper needs to be sent to Canton. “That’s a great idea.” #cowboyswire
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) December 18, 2017
If the call would have gone against him, we’d be having a different conversation today. Instead, that might become the most famous pieces of paper in U.S. history, like the Constitution or Declaration of Independence.
