I’m so sorry that people are completely missing the point of your Hozier post I’m particularly passionate about him and the tags on the reblogs are driving me insane. Are white people (especially white queer people in particular lord) not uncomfortably talented at removing nuance from music that is about oppression they are not familiar with. Must I bring up pretty much all of Mitski’s discography again. This isn’t a “tiktok” issue I’ve had to hear this shit about Hozier from fellow white people since before tiktok was even a thing. If the message isn’t spelled out smacking you in the face then more often than not white people will interpret it devoid of the context that the singer is speaking from a POC or just generally oppressed perspective. Irish people count because we genuinely never really consider how fucked over Ireland has been because we see them as more white people and therefore “just like us”. “Some POC cannot interpret subtext” does not mean “this is not a thing that white privileged people specifically are known for”.
I'm so sorry for getting to this so late but you're so real for making the connection to Mitski !! Yes !! There is a distinct aim to pick out specifics that may fit a certain internalized agenda, which takes away from the artist's intent. And Hozier, in my listening, is one of those artists where you simply cannot remove his intent and his identity from his music. This is so so insightful thank you so so much for this !!
#hozier#.answer#music takes#consuming hozier's music through a “tunnel vision” lens as a white queer person will not let you see the nuance dealing with Irish struggle#which is so integral to Hozier's identity#it's such a disservice to his artistry to seperate his Irish-ness from his music#now am I saying you have to listen to his music one specfic way? absolutely not#but too many people are looking at his music in a particular way that does not critically engage his intent and motivation for music
