Episode 24: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, Part 5

Been dreading this one because I really liked the confrontation at the end of Part 4 and some individual scenes have been neat but for the most part this arc has been extremely gross.

Also, had to change the shady piracy website that I'm taking my screenshots from. We're watching the show on Crunchyroll but we have to do "Someone in the extended family has a subscription and we all share" shenanigans for all of our streaming services so nobody knows who had the Crunchyroll password and I can't get it on my computer.

Yuki has a cat now. I wonder if she'll get to keep it. I would love to see Yuki transition from stoic robot with no furnishings to stoic robot who is a cat person now.

Her apartment filled with just that one kotatsu and also a scratching post, cat tree, cat tunnel, and food dishes.

Sitting at the kotatsu with a book open on the table, reading with a cat in her lap. Petting its head mechanically; The same exact motion on repeat like a metronome. "Kitty," she says aloud in her emotionless monotone.

In any case, we got through this shooting session without more Mikuru grossness so I'm hoping Haruhi learned something from yesterday's meltdown and reconciliation. I mean, this is still happening:

But that's still gonna happen. Haruhi gonna Haruhi.

I just. Would really like to see character growth come out of this gross arc.

Shamisen is amazingly verbose and capable of a complex understanding of language.

I want to keep him. I desperately want to keep him. Can we keep him? Please tell me we get to keep him.

I will trade this character for him.

Aww, we're sending Shamisen with Kyon. That's a shame. I was all set for Cat Ladybot Yuki.

At this point, the only reason I feel confident that those guys aren't another Haruhi Thing (TM) is because that's not her genre. XD

Part of me thinks it's for the best that Haruhi doesn't read medieval fantasy and didn't make a world with dragons and shit. But then I remember that she did make a world with reality-bending data aliens. Being as sci-fi nerd isn't any better than a fantasy nerd in this regard.

Who's up for a religious schism!?

Mikuru offers a conflicting interpretation of Haruhi to what Itsuki's been saying. Itsuki believes that, in the event three years ago, Haruhi created the universe. That, essentially, all things in existence are only three years old. There is no past beyond that point, which meshes with something Mikuru told us early on.

It's impossible to travel back in time beyond three years from today, for reasons unknown. This would make sense if there is no past, as Itsuki speculated.

If the universe sprang into existence fully formed from the timequake three years ago then it would be impossible to travel beyond the timequake.

The computer bug came to our time from a parallel reality 208 million years ago, according to Yuki. In order for that to be true, there must have existed a period of time 208 million years ago.

This doesn't disprove Haruhi creating the universe in the timequake. She could have created time retroactively. But it does mean that the nonexistence of time beyond the timequake cannot be used as evidence to prove that Haruhi created the universe, because time does exist beyond the timequake. Mikuru's organization can't reach it, but the Data Integration Thought Entity's awareness can.

Which, itself, makes sense since it's already been established that the aliens have a better grasp of time than the time travelers do. In any case, it seems likely that the world existed before three years ago.

As Yuki clarifies, Mikuru instead believes that the world was always like this but Haruhi has the ability to discover strange and mysterious things. There were always aliens, but Haruhi's abilities simply drew them in, basically.

I don't think that's correct either. Kyon brings up that all of the espers spontaneously developed their abilities and awareness of Haruhi during The Event Three Years Ago, which is fairly significant proof that the world was altered. Yuki's counterpoint... sucks?

"Maybe he lied."

I mean, sure, but if we go down that rabbit hole then maybe Haruhi has no powers and Yuki's just been using her alien magic to fake all of it this whole time. Anyone can be lying about anything, Yuki. That's a bad argument.

Obviously something happened three years ago because all three of them agree on that. Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki have all independently testified that some fucking shit went down three years ago that brought them all here.

I've already made my argument against Itsuki's interpretation. A decisive argument against "The world was always like this" is Mikuru herself. You could say that the extradimensional bug always existed, and Haruhi's logo simply drew it to her. You could say that the Celestials are a natural phenomenon that are simply being stirred up by Haruhi's emotions. You could say that Shamisen is actually a talking cat because of reasons, that simply crossed Haruhi's path.

But Mikuru Beam is pretty hard to equivocate. Haruhi gave Mikuru the ability to shoot a photon laser out of her eye, which she did not previously possess. (The time loop also comes to mind.) So. No, Mikuru. The world was not always like this. Haruhi is doing shit.

The most plausible explanation is the alternative one that Itsuki first introduced. The one where Haruhi did not create the world but did remake it. Her power simply erupted one day and expanded across the universe like Devil Homura's Labyrinth.

I get the point they're making here about the complexity of belief. Like a proper religion, at the end of the day, it is difficult to draw any factual conclusions about the true esoteric nature of Haruhi Suzumiya. But I think, if you look deep enough, there are sufficient pieces to draw suppositional conclusions, at least - but those may vary from person to person.

We'll never truly know.

Okay, I'm loving the idea of Mikuru and Itsuki's factions being hostile to one another and the inter-group drama that such an idea would create. Especially since we all have to play Nice Happy Club Friends in front of Haruhi.

Religious schism and political intrigue in my slice-of-life show about goldfish scooping with the local cosmic horror? Yes please.

But I feel a little uncomfortable with the idea that *gestures at Mikuru* ALL OF THAT was stuff Mikuru went along with because she's trying to honeypot Kyon.

It feels like they're trying super hard to salvage what they've done with Mikuru and are instead making it worse.

That said, what I do like is that we didn't have any more gross Haruhi Molests Mikuru jokes in this whole episode. Itsuki's mad at Kyon for not fixing the "Haruhi's movie is warping reality" problem but I'm satisfied that Kyon and Haruhi's meltdown did result in changed behavior, at least for now.

She's still an asshole.

But at least she's backed off of the sexual harassment that these episodes had dialed up so high. So that's something.

Oh hey we're FINALLY having the lunch conversation that was promised all the way back in episode 6. Kyon's finally going to break the rules and leak everything to Haruhi.

And just like Yuki promised: Haruhi doesn't fucking care what you think, Kyon. In fact, she thinks you're making fun of her. Good job.

A definitive Reference Guide – How to earn your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) in India and become a Commercial Pilot!

I get this question from young aviation enthusiast all the time, and despite a plethora of information available on the topic, very few seem to have captured all the elements together. Therefore, in this article I attempt to craft a definitive guide to an aspiring Aviator’s most important First Question.

YOU Need to study before you Study!

Minimum education requirements: A student pilot is required to have passed Physics and Mathematics 12th Standard examinations. Science students with Physics and Mathematics as core subjects, automatically fulfil this requirement. On the other hand, if you do not have these Science subjects in your 12th Standard, but still want to take up the flying profession, there’s a Hack! – you have an option to appear for these subjects through National Indian Open School (NIOS). I am deliberately not including links in the article as the links do change over time,information keeps updating, and the best way is use these key words and just do a simple online search 😊

YOU Need to be fit before you fit in the Cockpit!

If anyone needs to be fit, it’s You! But don’t worry, I haven’t come across all athletes in the profession, and you can probably breath. What’s important is meeting the prescribed medical fitness of DGCA Class-2 medical examination - to start your journey as a student pilot. Although, to get the Commercial Pilot License (CPL), you would need to have a fit DGCA Class-1 medical assessment. There a few extra tests in a Class-1 medical examination, as compared to Class-2, and I would suggest you to ask your doctor to do those extra tests too so that you can satisfy yourself that you meet the standards, and if there is any condition that can be corrected through treatment, you can consider that and discuss with your doctor during this early stage of your process. You can check the list of approved medical examiners on the DGCA website. Also, I would like to burst a few myths here – I have seen many misguided students who think they need to have perfect eye sight and other conditions. That’s far from the truth! You can wear spectacles within prescribed limits, and you can treat many other temporary conditions through correct treatment, diet and exercise. Even during the course of your career, you might not fall within normal range of annual / semi-annual tests ( for over 40 years of age / ATPL holders), and you might temporarily be declared unfit for a specified duration to undergo treatment and finally get your fitness certificate again. Under extreme conditions, pilots do get declared permanently unfit as well and this of course could be career ending as a cockpit crew – but these instances are rare and professional pilots are adequately covered through insurance policies as well.

Let’s do some paperwork!

You must apply with DGCA to get a unique computer number, which remains with you like forever!To secure this unique ID, you need to apply on the DGCA designated portal -UDAAN. The website hosts all details of requisite documentation- educational and ID proofs that you need to submit in the prescribed format with the prescribed fees.

Once you have your Computer Number, you can sign-up and complete your Udaan online profile, which enables you to apply for the DGCA theoretical examinations.

Alright, let’s get to the books now!

It is recommendedthat you do enrol in a good ground school or institute and study the core subjects before you begin your flying training. This not only helps you gain vital knowledge and confidence, it is crucial for your flying as it helps you come into harmony with your aircraft and rules of the air. Most of the flying schools do have a ground school component, but if you would want be proactive and clear your theory exams before you start flying, you would need to enrol with a good ground study institute and appear for DGCA CPL examinations. There are overall 5 theoreticalsubjects, which are mentioned below:

1. Aviation meteorology

2. Air regulations

3. Air navigation

4. Technical general

5. Technical specific

DGCA conducts the examinations in 4 sessions every year, usually in the months of - January, April, July and October. These examinations are valid for 5 years (except multi-engine specific papers, which are valid for 2.5 years).

Cheat Code! – If you decide to do your flying abroad, you can choose to study and clear the first 3 subjects (Met, Regs and Nav – as they say it😊) – as once you get your foreign CPL, you apply for conversion and you need these 3 exams to be cleared in India – Refer to the latest DGCA foreign Pilot’s License Conversion Chart on DGCA website.

Another important exam, and probably the hardest - Radio Telephony Restricted license – RTR (A)

RTR examination is conducted by Wireless Planning Commission (WPC) of India. It is a license for pilots to enable them to use radio telecommunication devices in aircraft. Currently, exams are conducted every two months in 5 centresacross India - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad. The exam consists of two parts – a practical test of communication capabilities, and an interview with a DGCA and a WPC official. Once you pass, a license with a lifetime validity will be issued.

Cheat-code! – If you earn foreign CPL and get your RT licence from a commonwealth country, you can submit the prescribed application with WPC and get a RTR (P) license, which offers the same privileges but is valid for a period of maximum of 20 years or validity of foreign license (per current regulations) – Refer to the current RTR(P) conversion and renewal guidelines on WPC / DOT website.

Also, before CPL is issued, you need to clear mandatory English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test and depending on the level you achieve, Level – 6 being the expert level, you would be issued the ELP certificate with a validity (ELP – 6 has lifetime validity). You can search online to get a list of authorised test examiners.

Go get your wings now!

Select your flying school ! This is the most important step and you need to do a thorough Due Diligence before you apply and select a flying school. Various parameters and elements need to be considered and we recommend using the following checklist:

1. Define your budget.

2. Do your research and consider seeking guidance from a Mentor. An Aveatr MentorTM could be your best friend and guide here. Make a list of best flying schools around the globe.

3. Research the flying schools and consider – its facilities and fleet(India recognized Single and Multi-engine aircraft, simulator, instrument rating etc.), instructors, place, country and weather.

4. Look for feedback from former students, discuss with your Aveatr MentorTM and shortlist the schools.

5. Reach out to the flying schools and review their course brochures, duration, fees schedule, terms and conditions and their commitment to your un-interrupted flying training.

6. Apply to schools and make the final selection based on above parameters.

If you are looking to do your flying abroad, you would need to get a standardised English Test result (mainly IELTS), and apply for the visa with requisite offer letter from flying school and other supporting documents – your flying school will share guidance on visa application.

Take-off!

When you join flying school, India or Abroad, you will be issued Student Pilot License (SPL) and Flight Radio Telephony Operating License (FRTOL), per specific procedure for each country. You will also need your Class-1 medical here.You can get your medical certificate in India (for most countries) before leaving, or you can get your medical done at the country – it is not really difficult😊

Flying curriculum – be sure the curriculum complies with latest DGCA requirements. I am just including the overall (current) flying requirements below:

You need to clock 200 hours of flying in total for CPL, with 100 hours minimum as Pilot-in-Command (PIC), 20 hours ofmulti-engine flying, and 20 hours of multi-engine simulator flying. Ask your mentor or instructors to suggest you the best combination of multi-engine and single engine aircraft flying – keep an eye on your budget, flying courses don’t have fixed fees and based on your flying hours (you may need to repeat a sortie) and type of aircraft flown, your total fees could vary quite considerably! – Also,Refer to the latest DGCA foreign Pilot’s License Conversion Chart on DGCA website – YOU may need to do some flying checks here in India and do a lot of precise CPL application paperwork!

Congratulations, Captain! You have your wings now!

Now, you have two main options – get an Airline Job OR continue your flying school journey as an Instructor.

Getting an Airline Job – Study well and prepare for Airline Assessments! You can either self-study or join a credible Airline preparation course, which would cover the various aspects of Airline assessments – which mainly entail following elements - theoretical knowledge, simulator / psychomotor examination, aptitude test, group task, interview.

OR be a Flight Instructor - To become an instructor, depending on the country, you need specified hours of Pilot-In-Command (200 hours in India), and pass the flight instructors flight test / exam. (also, drawn weapons will disappear in first person). note that in fallout 4 third person, your character will continue to rotate/strafe as you move the camera.

you can add a 1 to the end of the command (tfc 1) and it will also freeze time. this is good for taking screenshots, not gifs

‘toggle menu’ -- this turns off the hud, including the crosshair. this is. very important. you don’t want the menu in ur gifs ok.

i Heavily suggest, especially for skyrim, that you use an ENB if your computer can handle it. it makes the game look nice, but it also usually includes depth of field which i am an absolute slut for. if not, use the mod dynavision for a DoF effect (available for both skyrim and fo4!)

and then you just have fun with it. getting good shots takes some practice. play with it. i tend to record long sessions (~5-10 minutes) with a LOT of different shots to pick from when i watch it back.

here’s where we use the Cinematic Tools, lads! these are a little more difficult. note that there are ct for a lot of games that i don’t play but i’m assuming they work the same. i’ve also never used CT in andromeda but it’s the same engine so they also probably work the same. so i’m mainly talking about DA:Inquisition.

OKAY SO. start the game. load ‘er up. you want to run origin and DAI as admin, and then once you’re in game, start the CT as admin, too. the controls window will open, and then another command prompt type window will open and hack into the matrix. you don’t have to do anything with it, but note that if you close the command prompt window, it will close the game.

okay! party time. there are lots of other tutorials on using the CT, btw, so if i don’t explain it sufficiently you can either ask me or look up other tutorials.

first, i usually take gifs of characters in DAI, which means i wait until cutscenes so we can see them talking or making faces or whatever. you can also do scenery gifs or whatever!

so we’re in a cutscene. first and foremost check “freeze time” and then “enable”. set up your shots. start recording. THEN uncheck “freeze time”. that’s all in the “free camera” tab of the CT and technically all you need. But wait, there’s more. we’ve got two other tabs!

in this tab, I most often use “depth of field” because we’ve already established that i love a strong DoF. all these things are a little hard to understand and mostly require a lot of messing around.

pretty self explanatory -- it’s the distance from the camera that objects will be in focus. for portraits, i usually have it at 1.125.

blur factor

how blurry the stuff that’s out of focus will be. i usually set it somewhere between 4 and 7, though you can go higher or lower. dealer’s choice.

blur add

makes everything blurry regardless of focus. don’t use it.

blur filter

i almost always set it to gaussian 9 but it doesn’t make that much of a difference.

dof type

always set it to sprite

max blur

i absolutely do not know what this does and don’t use it.

near start/end

with this you can kind of expand “focus distance” to include more varied distances. i usually don’t mess with this and i suggest you don’t.

far start/end

most useful in outdoor scenes. usually it’ll be set to like 100, meaning that there’s a gradient way out to the most blurred parts. if you bring it lower, the gradient distance gets shorter, so the background gets blurrier closer to your focus. what i set it to depends entirely on the scene. just try messing with it and see what it does for you.

make sure you hit the green enable button on the left and Also tick “enable” on the DOF screen to use it.

this tab is a little more useful for screenshotting but i’ll include it since i’m going over the CT anyway. i have never messed with global fov or timescale BUT

i usually set it down to 512 for smooth, soft, realistic shadows. otherwise they look kinda stripey.

NOT FOR GIFS. do not use this for gifs. but DEFINITELY do use it for screencaps. set it to two (i’ve had my computer freeze from trying to set it to 4, so like, be careful). it basically doubles the resolution of everything on screen and makes it very pretty but it’ll ruin your framerate so don’t try to record with it.

okay, I’ve got my footage, now what!

now we’re gonna open it in whichever player you picked.

GOMPLAYER:

for gomplayer, you’re going to press ctrl + g to bring up the screencapture window. i Don’t remember what the original settings are, but you wanna make sure your quality is set to 255 (highest) and that it’s set to original resolution.

now the slightly hard part. you gotta hit “burst capture” while the video is playing, so it’s slightly imprecise. for that reason i have the number (burst capture images) set much higher than i’ll use, so that i make up for the imprecision. after you capture, go in and delete the frames you don’t need, either in windows explorer or after you’ve loaded them into photoshop.

POTPLAYER:

just pause your video, hit ctrl+g, copy my settings, click start, and then play your video. potplayer will capture every frame.

i should have mentioned this earlier but you have to have a folder to save your screencaps in. i usually organize by GIFS>game name># what its a gif of>a numbered folder for each gif in the set. but it’s up to you. just probably don’t save to your desktop or wherever the default location is.

AND NOW THE FUN PART!!

open photoshop!!! if it’s your first time here, go to window>animation so that you’ll. have the animation window open.

now go file > load files into stack > browse, and find the frames we just took. select em all. click ok.

you’re probably going to start off in timeline view. we don’t want that yet. click the box in the bottom right corner that looks like multiple little boxes to switch to frame view.

in frame view, click the menu box thing. and click “make frames from layers” and then “reverse frames”

now select all your frames, and on any one of them, select the arrow next to “0.0 sec” (this is the frame delay). select “other”

what you set the frame delay to depends on what your footage frame delay originally was. if you’re using game footage, it was probably 60fps, in which case you should set the delay to 0.04 sec. if it was 30 fps, I usually go 0.06 to 0.08. play around with it and decide which you like best. there’s a play button so you can see how the delay looks before you continue.

now we switch back over to timeline view. so click the same button as we used to get to frame view.

now select all your layers, in the layer panel. right click on them and click “convert to smart object”

here is usually where I do my scaling/cropping. tumblr photoset sizes are 540px for full width, 268 for 2 wide, and 177 for 3 wide. KEEP IN MIND when making especially 540px gifs that the size limit is 3mb. so you can’t make them super tall or super long (time-wise).

the gif of calcifer i’m making is going to be 540x250. make use of set image size (ctrl + alt + i) and canvas size (ctrl + alt +c). set the width of 540 with image size and then crop the canvas to your desired height with canvas size.

1) MAKE SURE YOU SET THE LOOPING OPTIONS TO “FOREVER”. i put this in caps because I am an idiot who messed this up all the time when i first started.

2) keep an eye on your file size!! if it’s over 3mb (mine, down in the left corner, says it’s 2.697, so it’s fine) then you can try to reduce the number of colors. but don’t go below 128 colors, because then it starts to look bad. instead you can try reducing the height or going back and cutting down the number of frames (so basically remaking the gif again :( ).
