4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

gotta shout out to shannon hale again, lol. sometimes you need that sweet sweet soothing ya. i also read some diana wynne jones that wasn't howl's moving castle for the first time c/o mage, and i'm looking forward to getting further into her stuff.

10. What was your favorite new release of the year?

not to mimic every "best books of the year" digest including obama's, but i didn't read a lot of new books and project haily mary by andy weir did not disappoint. i would put winter's orbit here, but i originally read it as a fic, so idk if that's new new.

12. Any books that disappointed you?

you received my rants on the city we became by nk jemisin... the writing was great as usual and i loved the characters, but i found it super off-putting that [semi-spoilers] a whole swathe of a real city that really exists was designated as evil and an OK loss? #stoptheboroughhate + hopefully this is addressed in the sequel

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

i read neurotribes by steve silberman in like 2 days, which is very fast reading for me. it struck the perfect balance between diving very deep into its subject and keeping things entertaining.
