“taxi!”
the crisp night air nipped at your legs as you stepped off of the sidewalk and onto the edge of the street for the fifth time in the past fifteen minutes. you waved your hands semi erratically, jumping up and down as to try and make yourself take up more space so that the bright yellow vehicle would take notice. instead you watched as it zipped right past you, short term deja vu happening once again.
you threw your arms down in defeat and stared up at the night sky, “fuck!” you sent your frustrations up to the half of a full moon you could see, the other portion blocked by skyscrapers. how is it that this city was known to be crawling with cabs and you couldn’t even flag one of them down? were you on some kind of taxi blacklist?
whatever the reason, you decided that between your horrible luck with public transport and your dead cell phone, you might as well start the trek home.
your body buzzed with the alcohol from the evening; your night out with friends had veered into the early morning hours, and you promised them you’d be able to find your way home. blacklist or not, the city was walkable and you were tired of waiting.
so you crossed your arms over your chest, a half baked attempted at hiding from the chill of the city. you started walking in the direction of your apartment, craving the touch of warm sheets and pillowcases.
after a few minutes of sharing the air with faint car horns and the buzzing of people’s air conditioning units, you heard something else. someone else.
you weren’t naive, the city never sleeps, and there were bound to be people out just like you. however the path you chose was definitely less trafficked, and general paranoia was starting to set in. after all, you’ve been the only person for the past three blocks, only sharing the sidewalk with stray cats.
the thought that someone was behind you forced you to sober up quickly. ice cold blood replacing the warm alcohol that was coursing through your veins.
the footsteps are louder now, matching your heartbeat patting against your rib cage. you wonder why they haven’t walked past you yet. were you being followed? taking a deep breath, you reach into your bag slowly. you retrieve your small weapon of defense, ready to face off a potential threat. whoever it was, they were behind you now. you figured your best bet was fight AND flight. attack and spirit off.
you hear a wolf whistle, deep and slow, right in your ear. it’s now or never.
you whip around and shove your arm toward the nightcrawler (pervert?). you open your mouth to let out a scream and clench your eyes shut. you’re surprised when your voice is muffled by…leather?
“oh cupcake, this is adorable! where’d you get this, amazon?”
you open your eyes and are stunned to lock them with a sea of red and black. your eyes trail upwards, spying artificial whites and a mask you’ve grown familiar with. the original terror you felt starts draining from your body, and is replaced by shock and a strange sense of relief.
deadpool has one of his gloved hands locked around your wrist, long index finger just barely lifting yours off of the trigger of the object in question. a travel sized, hot pink, container of mace.
you open your mouth again to speak but find his other hand muffling your airways, his large palm covering your mouth and tip of your nose. you frantically grasp at his arm with your free hand, yanking it away from your face.
“you know sweet thing, if you wanna walk around this late by yourself, you’ll need something a little more industrial. i actually know a guy if you-“
you take in a giant gulp of air and clutch your chest, trying to slow down your heart rate, “what. the FUCK is wrong with you?” you cut off deadpool’s rambling, staring at his blank eyes.
the merc tilts his head to the side as if he was a confused golden retriever, “really? you wanna trauma dump right now? well…” he clears his throat, voice dropping an octave to portray faux sincerity, “i guess it all started in third grade…”
you groaned and rubbed your face with your free hand, the other still in control by your assaulter, “you could’ve announced yourself, you gave me a heart attack! what are you doing following me anyway?”
deadpool finally releases your hand, his own finding home on his hips, resting right above his two holsters. “well i saw you wandering around like carrie bradshaw. and i may not be your mister, but i was hoping to give you something Big.” he shrugs as if that response was as normal as discussing the weather. you shove your measly can of mace back into your bag.
shaking your head, you turn on your heels, starting to walk away. you plan to continue your trek home, confident that the anti hero would be quick to follow behind. “how hard would it be to just say you want to walk me home?”
you’ve been playing this game of back and forth flirtation for a while now, and you knew that deep…deep…deep down he was masking true concern for you.
deciding not to answer, deadpool took just a few of his large strides to end up by your side. “what are you doing walking alone looking like that anyway? admit it! you were hoping i’d show up.”
you look at him with glassy eyes. now that your guard was fully down, you started to feel the effects of those three tequila shots you took as a send off to your friends. maybe those weren’t such a good idea. the way you’re looking up at him make’s deadpool’s wade’s stomach turn, and he has to clench his fists to control himself.
suddenly he’s forgotten why he was on this side of town in the first place.
you let out a laugh full of teeth, “oh you wish! i haven’t seen you in a few days though, had to go out to fill my needs elsewhere.”
what you two have has never went beyond casual flirtation, but the idea of you being under someone else sparks a match of jealously. but wade knows better. and he knows that slight stumble as you walk, your hands pulling the skirt of your outfit down.
deadpool hisses as if you’ve hit a nerve, “ouch baby, i didn’t think i’d be third wheeling with you and jose cuervo tonight.” he spots a car driving toward the two of you and acts quickly; he places a gloved hand on your waist and moves you away from the sidewalk. he doesn’t miss a beat, you don’t even realize you’ve switched places.
you’re looking back up at him again as you walk, this time reaching up and tapping the handle of one of his sheathed katanas, “what about you killer? you been thinkin’ about me?” you’re teasing him, but a small part of you hopes he’ll give you a genuine answer that aligns with what you want to hear.
his mask creases as he raises his eyebrows and you can’t see but wade is giving you a smirk that sits on the side of his mouth, “oh you know it sweet thing. every time i’ve slid one of these bad boys in and out of a bad guy, it reminds me of what we could have.”
deadpool lets out a dramatic sigh, reminiscing on something that hasn’t even happened, “but their screams usually ruin my hard on, i think your’s would have the opposite effect.”
so much for your genuine answer.
you blame the red on your cheeks and buzzing feeling on the alcohol, pushing the thought of the real cause into a box and storing it in the back of your mind. how embarrassing to feel this way about a masked weirdo that sometimes strolls through your neighborhood. you didn’t even know his real name. hell, you’ve never seen his face!
after a little more walking and a lot more sexual tension, the two of you arrive in front of your apartment building. you turn to face your escort for the evening, flashing him a grin full of drunken glee, “well this is my stop, thank you for the company mr. pool. i’ll have to repay you somehow.” your tone teasing but borderline suggestive.
deadpool nods and taps his chin a few times, “you’re right cupcake….since you’re offering…” he trails off, his voice growing deeper as he bent down to be eye level with you. your throat hitched, a gasp getting stuck there, not expecting him to call your bluff. “i take payments in the form of cash, debit, or check!”
he taps the tip of your nose and shoots back, standing up straight.
oh right! no way this guy would ever actually take you up on your banter! and that was a good thing…right? you decided to end the night now, preventing your drunken state from dragging a masked man into your home.
you rolled your eyes and braced your hand on his broad shoulder, stepping on the tip of your toes and placing a kiss on the side of his mask, the textured material tickling your lips. “goodnight handsome.”
you leaned away from him but trailed your hand down to rest on his chest. hey! the tequila was making you brave.
deadpool, no wade—deadpool—no! wade felt like he was about to fall backwards like a cartoon cat after getting hit with a sledgehammer. it had been a long time since his suit had experienced anything that gentle, he felt this was about to go down a dangerous path.
wade stared down at you through white lenses, his gaze bouncing between your hand and your lips. back and forth like a game of table tennis.
he watched as you bit your lip and held his gaze. your cheeks flushed, eyes glossy, the street lights illuminated your face in a way he’s never seen before. he wonders if potential onlookers could see small hearts surrounding his head.
wade feels a thought go through him, as if it swept in on the early morning breeze. a thought that he felt insane (shocker) for having even for a moment.
standing there with you, he wants to be himself. he has the urge to be vulnerable; rip his mask off and be wade wilson with you. for you. in this moment he wants to be more than the merc that flirts with you. wade wants to be with you. he wants…..fuck he wants to take you inside and make sure your body leaves an imprint in the mattress that’ll be there for weeks. stop looking at him like that, his pants are getting tight.
and there’s deadpool. he imagines tiny versions of himself stabbing katanas into the hearts around his head. they let out sad whines as they deflate and fall onto the sidewalk below him. he needs to get a grip.
“sweet dreams angel face. oh! if you need me throughout the night, just scream out of your bedroom window! screams of damsels in distress are like my mating call.”
you retract your hand with a giggle that makes that stupid thought come back into deadpool’s head.
you hesitate. wanting to say something but…deciding best not to. you turn around and walk up the stairs to your door, ignoring the fire in your stomach that’s been growing after each flirtatious jab.
you hear him start to speak as soon as you put your key into the lock, and you turn around almost too eagerly. you want him to say what you’ve been wanting, craving to hear. you want him to enable that dark part of you; the part of you that wants more of him. the part of you that knows he’s wrong. that he’s got to be walking danger.
deadpool points at himself, “but babe, if you see a way less sexy guy in a suit responding to your call. one that has ugly little spider webs all over him? slam the window shut. you want nothing to do with that guy, trust me.”
your shoulders drop, an exhale released. you give him one last shake of your head, and a barely there smile, before you’re inside your home. the bubble that surrounded the two of you bursted.
the door shuts behind you but the masked man stays in place. he stares at the spot where you were just standing, thinking about all the other routes this night could’ve taken. he isn’t right for you. he should leave you alone. wade knows that. too bad deadpool’s never been a good listener.

On the planet Eris, in the city of Perianth II, night reigns, for there is no star close enough to challenge its rule.
Deep within the bowels of the metropolis lit only by manmade contraptions, sits a bar known as LOTUS-EATER, carved into the cragged terrain as if it’d always been there. It had not, in fact, contrary to local legend. Had the IPC not run into issues with overcrowded prisons, this planet they now consider a scourge would never have had the means to limp on.
Easy solutions cultivate the conditions for worse problems to develop later on.
This is what your mother — a shrewd woman to her core — instilled in you.
Grimacing, you reread the words on your screen for the umpteenth time.
… You wish she had instilled some business management skills instead.
Tumblr media
“Miss Exalted-One-Ma’am, when are you coming back inside? This client is refusing to leave until he can speak with you. Lear is running interference, but that’s going as well as you can imagine,” a feminine voice calls out.
You glance up fast enough to assess her expression. Despite the severity of her words, she’s smiling, amber eyes crinkling by the corners. Her chestnut-colored hair is worn in a braid that extends down the length of her back, meaning she hasn’t clocked out yet, or else it’d be loose. You have some wiggle room, then.
“Nona,” you beckon her over, “What do you think this means?”
Inquisitive creature she is, she doesn’t waste this opportunity to poke around in your private matters. Her eyes flitter back and forth as she takes in the contents of your phone. Interlocking her hands behind her back, she hums.
“Looks like we’re due for a visit.”
“That’s what you gathered too?” You murmur. “What a mess this is turning into. The last thing we need is for the hounds to start sniffing around.”
“I dunno what you’re frazzled about, exalted one. The locals wouldn’t cough up info to the IPC even if their life depended on it.”
“Therein lies your answer — the locals won’t, but our clientele is vast as the universe is infinite. Someone looking to score quickly could put in a tip. The hounds are just itching for an excuse to put an embargo on Eris again.”
She shrugs. “Outsiders bribed and snuck their way in last time, they would now too. Benefits of a quality product.”
You shake your head and pinch the bridge of your nose. Nona means well, but if she thinks in such simple terms, her training period won’t ever end. Or perhaps you’re being a tad too harsh on the girl, you haven’t slept since receiving this text message two cycles ago. If it weren’t for how scarce this technology is, you would’ve smashed it to pieces for causing you such prolonged strife.
Alas, as a native of Eris, there are two things you intrinsically cherish above all else — any object that emits light and the special nectary cradled within the planet.
“I’ll take your input into—”
A shrill shriek cuts you off before you can finish your sentence.
“The hysterical client, I reckon,” Nona dryly remarks. “Now, can you please come in before Lear gets stabbed? If it isn’t already too late.”
You don’t bother dignifying her macabre speculation with a reply. You enter through a back door accessible only to LOTUS-EATER staff, weaving around boxes of cargo that need to be sorted. A heady, aromantic scent clings to the wood, yet its temptation is long lost on you. Where the clients indulge, you abstain. The livelihood of yourself and your workers relies heavily on your psyche’s clarity.
Emerging from the back rooms has you standing on the building’s second floor, an area known as The Lounge. Here, the spherical, gravity-defying emitters of lights standard in this region are set dimly. This latest model even allows you to adjust the dimensions, ranging from small enough to fit in the palm of your hand to the size of a room. There was supposed to be one more on this floor, but while unpacking the order, it slipped from Lear’s hands and met an early demise. Great cooperation was needed to locate the glass that floated to the ceiling.
You check the status of occupancies. Two private rooms are in session, the other eight are empty. By your design, it had been a slow night. You gave orders to the receptionist, Thalia, to only book appointments for influential customers, just in case the omen floating over your head comes true. You walk down the hallway which leads to the first floor, only to notice cool colors set in a square array by the digital lock.
The sight doesn’t sit right with you. You consider taking a detour to investigate, only for the commotion downstairs to encourage otherwise.
“Sir, if you’d please calm down—”
Lear’s gentle voice is cut off by another.
“I demand to speak with her,” it heaves. “The mind witch. Where is she?”
The electronic curtains that lift for those put into the LOTUS-EATER’s database part in a magnificent flurry of scarlet hues. You feel each set of eyes that glance your way. It’s a typical ensemble present — affluent travelers, political emissaries, and well-to-do merchants. Some drink at the bar, others watch the live entertainment playing soft music. Everyone aside from the heaving interloper is dressed in the formalwear expected of the establishment.
The click of your heels against the dark wood floor reverberates throughout. The man’s reaction to your appearance is delayed, though he eventually turns his head to see where Lear is looking. Resentment contorts his face upon spotting you. You recognize him. Jay R. Alister, a client who gave Thalia a difficult time due to his demands to have a Synalink booking today. You thought you smoothed over the matter by granting him access to the first floor, The Club, and placing him on a priority list for next time.
Copious amounts of alcohol must’ve unraveled your hard work.
“Shall we take a moment to collect ourselves, sir?”
“No one no one understands,” he insists, swaying ever so slightly. It’s a peculiar sight. One message from a handful of the individuals present would be enough to spell doom for Alister, this charade likely already has him blacklisted across multiple star systems. To be a client at LOTUS-EATER is a privilege. Everyone adheres to the unspoken rule of the honor system, eliminating the need for security inside.
“I’d like to, Mr. Alister, if you wouldn’t mind explaining to me outside.”
He’s drunk, but a low-level link can be established, you surmise. It isn’t an option without risks. As a recurring client, he could catch onto the invasive feeling and grow further agitated. The eyes fixated on you grow heavier. Some are curious, others bemused, and a few pass silent judgment, comparing your capabilities with the previous Exalted Arbiter.
He blinks slowly. “My Roze… she’s upstairs. She’s waiting for me. I can’t— can’t be late…”
“You won’t be,” your voice takes on a concerned lilt, “Let’s go meet her elsewhere. Follow me and I’ll take you to her.”
A white ring forms around his pupils.
“You… will?”
“I will. Come, now, we wouldn’t want to waste any more of her time, would we?”
The ring goes from opaque to solid.
The low-level link has been made manifest. You feel the thread connecting you to the essence that makes Jay R. Alister himself.
You stride past him and he immediately scrambles to follow. Out of the corner of your eye, you note how Lear’s shoulders relax and give him a reassuring nod. He did a good job stalling until you could personally see to this matter yourself. If this had occurred any other time, it would’ve been your top priority, but a far more sensitive issue threatened to ensnare you in a worrisome web.
One after another, the pairs of eyes fall, like a flying pest in its final moments. Conversation resumes and the music increases in volume.
Cool air embraces you once you’re outside. This particular region is well-lit, a testimony to its prestige. Restaurants, boutiques, and other fine shops have been built with walls of dark stone naturally found on Eris for better insulation. The once rugged streets are smooth, painstakingly cobbled together by a city planner many Amber Eras ago. Any crack has molten gold poured into it so that when it dries, the ground beneath your feet is a never-ending sea of ebony and gold.
You wave over the closest security guards. The rest can be left to them, Mr. Alister has damaged his reputation enough for you to consider his dues paid. You’ll tell Thalia to take him off the registered client list for LOTUS-EATER and that’ll be the end of it. You’re preparing to head back inside when a pervasive, overpowering influence freezes you in place. It’s reminiscent of an electric current.
The taut link between you falters.
Straining…
(He’s reaching into his pocket).
Fraying…
(His hands wield a sharpened implement).
Until it snaps.
The subjugated lunges at the subjugator.
You try to re-establish the link, but there’s a fortress around his mind that wasn’t there moments prior. Imposing and unbreachable. Where did this surge of mental fortitude come from? You need to think, you need to act. There must be a way for you to regain control, your technique is unshaken even in the face of imminent demise. In the three seconds it takes for him to close the distance, you make seventy-four attempts, each ending in failure.
Has the last grain of sand fallen to the bottom of the hourglass, cementing this choice to believe in your abilities as the wrong one?
This can’t be the end. Who will take care of—
Metal clashes against metal.
The being in front of you is a shade. Tendrils of agony untold slither up from his thigh and squeeze around his neck, constantly choking him, yet refusing the sweet reprieve a crushed windpipe would give. This is a person acquainted with every suffering a living creature could ever endure. The prismatic shards that detail his countless tragedies aren’t just broken, they’re eviscerated, an indecipherable mess. Some scattered to the wind and others forcibly scratched out.
This nightmarish presence eclipses your would-be killer.
His eyes meet yours and the hairs on the back of your neck stand.
“Don’t bother,” is all he says.
He could sense you trying to poke around in his head? Has he come into contact with Arbiters before? That can’t be possible, you’re familiar with everyone on the LOTUS-EATER registry. You cease your ministrations without verbally acknowledging him. His hollow expression burns into your retinas, invading your mind’s eye. The sword he saved your life with holds a similar weight. It radiates such intensity that you needn’t use any techniques to get a better read on it.
Walking up the steps in a casual manner is the last person you wanted to see — Kafka of the Stellaron Hunters. She spares the now subdued Alister a glance then turns to face you.
“Fortunately, I had the foresight to send Bladie ahead,” she smiles. You resist the urge to scoff. “Otherwise, our meeting would’ve been far less pleasant.”
So that man’s with her, you think. That’d explain why I couldn’t make any progress.
If the defenses surrounding Alister were comparable to a fortress, the minds of the Stellaron Hunters are like a deflective shield. Any extensive attempts at trying to gain access end up backfiring and causing you damage so long as they remain up. The only other being capable of a similar feat was your mother. Now, in the few years since her death, you’ve encountered three more with similar capabilities.
Are your abilities growing dull? Or are other species simply evolving?
You order the guards to deal with Alister as they see fit, he’s no longer your primary concern.
There’s a far worse headache forming on the horizon.
“... I suppose you’ll follow me inside whether I invite you or not?” You question, just barely managing to maintain the smile painted hastily on your face.
Kafka doesn’t reciprocate your hostility. She never does. Instead, she motions in the direction you were planning on taking them to avoid any unwanted attention. The guards won’t be an issue, since they’re on your payroll. You don’t want to risk lingering and being spotted by someone without an allegiance to you.
“I won’t overstay my welcome, Exalted Arbiter. You have my word.”
By essentially showing up uninvited at your front door, she’s placed you in quite a precarious situation. The man who parried Alister’s attack hasn’t dropped his vigilance for an instant. His posture is that of an animal poised to pounce. You lack the means to fight them off should they choose to utilize force.
Your gut instinct tells you it’s a bad idea to get involved any further. Your mind reasons you can only play the cards you’re dealt.
A sigh passes by your lips. “Very well. Let’s get on with it then.”
The duo follows wordlessly behind you. Kafka remains close, whereas the swordsman lingers further back, taking care to avoid well-lit areas and remaining hidden. Had you not already been alerted to his presence, he could’ve easily slipped past your detection.
The Stellaron Hunters are a formidable group indeed.
During the short journey, you recall the text message that pushed you into this vat of strife.
It was accompanied by an animated emoticon of the magenta-haired fugitive blowing a kiss.
You’ll be in need of me shortly. See you then xoxo
Tumblr media
“Absolutely not!”
An exclamation of unrivaled proportion leaves you, accompanied by your palms slamming against your desk. Old-fashioned writing stationary clatters noisily in the aftermath. She stops the doomed descent of one pen and then looks back to you, unperturbed.
This woman is a shadow that follows her target persistently, devising fresh torments and sowing discord wherever she steps. To fight her is to do battle with a phantom, no attacks will land. The hopeless charade serves to tire you out. Still, your pride is wounded and without a balm to assuage the tender gash. It can’t scab over to heal. Again and again, it’s reopened, fresh blood washing over what had just dried.
“I haven’t finished my proposition,” she hums. She sits in front of your desk, legs crossed, her eyes shining an eerie shade. “I wouldn’t dare to ask so much of your resources if you didn’t stand to benefit as well. Our current arrangement has helped you cut down on costs, yes?”
You drum your fingers over the wood’s lacquer finish. “The word ‘arrangement’ implies cooperation, I believe extortion would be a better fit.”
“I’ll stand by my original phrasing. The IPC has abandoned all pretense of slowly creeping up rates on shipments to Eris; what they’re charging now will look generous in a few short Trailblazer Years. They want this planet dead and their past misdeeds to die alongside it.”
“Our current projections estimate we have at least two medium-length Amber Eras before we get to that point, by then, we’ll have countermeasures in place,” you droll out. These details have been drilled into your head ever since you became the head of this quadrant. “What proof do you have that the IPC will make such a drastic move? The other factions will lodge complaints, many of them use our… exports.”
You wince at the awkward phrasing of the word ‘exports’, knowing full well she’ll pick through any vulnerability like a vulture does a corpse.
Kafka leans forward. “By ‘exports’, you must mean Eris’ most sought-after natural resource. The tonic of the nectary.”
“I’m not allowed to discuss such sensitive material with outworlders.”
“You needn’t say anything, just listen,” she pulls out a vial from inside her jacket. The familiar sheen of glimmering gold within causes your breath to hitch. “Here I have a sample of the latest synthetic developments into the tonic, courtesy of Silver Wolf. The IPC is discreetly channeling funds into the Genius Society to revitalize the research effort.”
You bite back a laugh. “That knowledge is nothing new. They’ve been trying to replicate the tonic for ages; it’s a money pit. The last I heard, the closest they could get after investing billions of credits is a 14% match.”
“Try 70%.”
She sets the vial down and nods, encouraging you to take it. You don’t.
“... You can’t be serious,” your voice sounds far away, as if it were coming from another room. “You’re bluffing.”
“You don’t have to take my word for it. Have your alchemists examine it and come to your own conclusions.”
As a disciple of Destiny’s Slave, she’s confident that this will suffice to convince you, and loathe as you are to admit it, she’s right. The repercussions of this allegation could be disastrous. It’d be irresponsible on your part to not at least run it by the appropriate channels.
“What does this intel cost me?”
“Nothing, consider it a token of good faith. There’s a more pressing matter I hoped to bring to your attention, now that that’s out of the way.”
You raise an eyebrow. “More pressing than the future of my home?”
“That’d depend on who you ask,” Kafka dances around your apprehension to a rhythm no one else has ever composed. “It has to do with my companion. I didn’t bring him here to take in the sights, he’s to stay on a job until further notice.”
The mention of that enigmatic man brings with it a resurgence of the feelings you experienced earlier. It hit like a tidal wave, concentrated and suffocating. What would someone have to endure for their psyche to be saturated in such wretchedness?
“Alright. I’ll arrange for accommodations somewhere more discreet.”
“I think it’d be best if he stayed here, at the LOTUS-EATER.”
…
…
…
“What?”
Kafka has made many requests in the time she’s known you. Normally, she uses you as a point of contact to meet influential individuals or a warehouse of yours to store important items, but this is an entirely different beast. Those endeavors fester outside your purview. You give the push necessary and wash your hands clean of the implications.
To host a Stellaron Hunter in your most lucrative establishment could very well be the start of the end.
“After the events that unfolded earlier, you should see the potential advantages. You’re in a precarious situation. The IPC can’t place a bounty on you in an official capacity, but there are ways around bureaucracy. That attempt today won’t be the last.”
She lowers her voice to an enticing whisper. “And we both know you’re not financially sound enough to hire competent help. Take him. He’ll be yours if you permit him.”
How her melodious voice can invoke such a raw desire to argue is unknown, and yet, each fiery word fizzles out to ash on your tongue. In the same way you’d establish a link for the first time, you take the pieces of information at your disposal to test where the edges might align. The unusual fees on shipments, the supposed progress on the tonic, and the overall strain that’s been placed on every level of your business — the mosaic it forms is a crimson shade with a metallic scent.
You can’t die. Not yet, not when it’d cause so many to perish alongside you.
“This goes beyond ‘a token of good faith’,” you murmur. “Kafka… there’s far more to this, isn’t there? Just what are you planning?”
For once, the curvature of her smile is genuine. Blatant insincerity would unsettle you less.
“A gift for a friend.”
Tumblr media
Upon LOTUS-EATER’s roof sits your favorite getaway, a secluded balcony.
There’s nothing fancy about the decor, if anything, it’s worn rugged by the elements. Paint chips off the three chairs and stubborn foliage congregates no matter how often you banish it with your broom. After ensuring you can only be contacted in an emergency, you wipe the condensation off the chair furthest to the right and sit tall.
Although you aren’t alone, you keep your eyes on the starry sky.
“I would like to apologize for the behavior I displayed earlier,” you take your time with the words, ensuring each syllable has a pleasant ring. “It must’ve been from the shock, although that’s no excuse. Please allow me to thank you properly.”
An icy wind whistles through. Once it finishes, you fuss over your hair, putting each strand back in its designated place. You grimace when it picks back up again.
“You can express your gratitude by speaking normally.”
Your head snaps in his direction. You examine his side profile through narrow eyes, impatience writhing beneath your skin. He pays your poorly masked hostility no mind. One by one, each muscle in your body relaxes, a domino effect you can’t bother putting a stop to. You slump down into your chair and cross your arms over your chest.
“Have it your way,” you sigh. Your capitulation earns you his piercing stare. “Pretty words or not, I meant what I said. So, um… thank you, and…”
Despite yourself, you try meshing together a more subtle phrasing, only for those infinite pools of vermillion to act as a successful deterrent.
“I don’t like being indebted to others, it’s a hassle. So, here is my offer. I’ll perform a Synalink on you, free of charge. Or a waitlist.”
Blade exhales sharply through his nose. It takes a moment to register that your proposition amused him more than it intrigued him. The perceived affront on your capabilities causes you to bristle. This is a rare opportunity you’re granting him, surely he must’ve heard of your abilities somewhere! People spend years trying to get an audience with you. The other Arbiters you employ are capable enough, otherwise, they couldn’t work here; but you transcend their combined efforts.
“There is only one thing I’d want to experience, it’s beyond your means.”
Propping yourself up on the chair’s arm, you scoff. “Hah, try me. Any emotion, scenario, for whatever length of time; tell me what you want to experience and I can make it happen.”
He doesn’t instantly rebuke you. You share a moment of silence — almost solemn, certainly more meaningful for him than it is for you. There’s a light tug of guilt that pulls at your conscience. Perhaps it isn’t him underestimating you, but not wanting to set himself up for disappointment again. If you’re going to be occupying the same space for an unknown amount of time, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get on adequate terms. This could be the door that’ll open that path.
You clear your throat to dispense the accumulating tension. “That clothing… you must have ties to The Xianzhou Luofu, or some experience with them. Are you familiar with Immersia games?”
“Vaguely. An acquaintance of mine plays them.”
You’re confident you could put a name and face to this ‘acquaintance’. For the sake of cordiality, you keep your opinion to yourself.
“I’ve never been fond of the comparison to my work, but I suppose it’s a decent touchstone. An Immersia grants the player a simulated experience predetermined by developers. There is a degree of immersion, hence, well, the name, but that’s barely scratching the surface,” you explain.
Reassessing his body language only reveals neutrality. You decide it’s better than blatant disinterest and continue.
“Traditionally, there are thought to be five senses in advanced lifeforms. These senses don't create the continuity of reality we experience, they just break it down into bite-sized pieces for easy consumption. Forming a Synalink is akin to overclocking a computer, not placing a hard drive in a different system. Your brain finds the stimuli I send it indistinguishable from the touch of your hair against your face, or the woody scent of incense in that jar.”
His eyebrows crease slightly downward. “A single glimpse into my mind was enough to send you recoiling, and still, this is an offer you’re comfortable making?”
You purse your lips. It’s a fair point.
“That was… different. Ideally, any link should be made in a stable environment to minimize disruptions. I had nearly been—” You cut yourself off, finding the sentence to be one you’d rather not finish. “—You know, so I wasn’t at optimal performance. That’s why we have private rooms in The Lounge.”
Your nostrils flare when he keeps regarding you with that impassive expression. Is his face permanently frozen? Does he need to be unpaused? You almost want to snap your fingers in front of him.
“Hey, you’d be less effective if you had to improvise and fight with, say, a spoon. Would your combat ability be based on that one irregular instance or the total sum of all your fights? Hm? What you witnessed earlier was my irregular instance. If you’re open to the idea, I can make it work.”
Blade shifts so that he can resume gazing at the sky. Before you can celebrate your victory in this one-sided battle of wits, he speaks up. His voice adheres to a softer creed.
“You are…” he trails off, taking care to select the proper description, “Remarkably strange.”
Your eye twitches.
This has been a miserable cycle. You had to breathe the same air as Kafka, deal with a drunk client that later tried to stab you, and you found out the main export that keeps your planet’s economy from total collapse might be duplicable. All things considered, you should be giving this guy the cold shoulder for the problems he’ll inevitably cause in your future. Altruism gets you about as far as jumping into the air and hoping that’ll transport you through space.
“Forget it, then,” you get up and twist around. The chair you formally occupied scrapes loudly against the ground. You don’t spare him a single glance while traversing the few steps that separate you from a long, well-deserved rest. Maybe you’ll be extra petty and lock the door so he has to remain here until you wake up. The olive branch has been extended, if he wants to take it and break it in two, that’s his prerogative.
You raise your hand to unlock the door when abruptly, something captures your wrist.
Your heart stutters.
There isn’t the softness of flesh or the warmth that radiates off skin. Instead, you feel the textured surface of bandages graze against you in a featherlight touch. You know the vice-like grip he’s capable of. You saw it in how he clutched the grip of his sword, like it was the only thing he was good for. Gentleness cannot come naturally to someone of his disposition. It’s an intentional choice that requires swimming against the tide.
Shakily, you exhale, hoping it’ll ease how your hands tremble.
When was the last time someone touched you? Ah… it must’ve been then.
You will the thought away.
Blade doesn’t tether you down for more than a few seconds, just long enough to ensure your attention is back on him. Your skin tingles where he came into contact with you. It’s a prickly, blisteringly hot sensation that starts at your wrist and spreads all over. You squeeze your eyelids shut in a last-ditch effort to recompose yourself.
He’s looking straight at you when your eyes reopen.
“I didn’t mean to offend you,” he says. You find it strange how quick you are to believe him. “If you sincerely think yourself up to the task, then…”
There it is again, that swelling of feeling, visceral to a degree every survival instinct screams at you to turn away.
You find yourself leaning in closer.
He rewards your burning curiosity with the unprecedented utterance:
"Show me what it's like to die."

Lore: Dwarven Culture
Link: Disclaimer regarding D&D "canon" & Index [tldr: D&D lore is a giant conflicting mess. Larian's lore is also a conflicting mess. You learn to take what you want and leave the rest]
Overview | Culture | Specific Cultures | Magic | Religion | History -- WIP
-
I found this in my drafts, and apparently I forgot to post this ages back. So here's a compilation of the dwarf Realmslore I can get my hands on.
Touchstones of dwarven culture, like: language, the Clan, marriage, etc...
-
The dwarven name for their own people is Ahrraem. A dwarf is an arl, and the plural is ahra. They also refer to themselves as "the Folk" in Common.
Language: The dwarven language is called Arltah. Much like gnomes, with whom they seem to have linguistic overlap, the dwarven accent is described as a brogue, with flat pronunciation that emphasises the stressed syllables. It is, however, louder and clearer than the humming tones of the gnomish accent. The written form uses an angular, runic script called Dethek. It's written in a similar pattern to draconic - The sentence begins with a rune representing the dwarf who authored the writing (or a banner), and then the rest will spiral outwards in a tight circular pattern wrapping around that name.
The central symbol may also portray something else. Grave markers feature the face/s of the grave's occupant/s. Stories and histories will often portray a scene from the tale being told. Sometimes the image is just decoration.
Dwarves prefer not to write on perishable surfaces, and most carve into flat stones intended for this purpose, called runestones (in Common). A runestone is an inch-thick and circular or diamond in shape. Metal may also be used, but when it is the metal must be pure (gold, silver, etc) and perfectly manufactured.
A term of respect amongst dwarves is "longbeard," implying that they are an experienced and wise elder one can depend upon. Its opposite, insulting term, is "no-beard" or "shorthair."
While the taller races seem to think the shorter statures of dwarves (and gnomes and hin) is a reason to look down on them or treat them differently, dwarves themselves place no value on an individuals height whatsoever. Nevertheless, calling a dwarf "little" will be recognised for the slight it is. Calling them small and human in the same breath - "little man" - is an even greater insult.
-
Dwarves are subterranean by nature, and instinctually uncomfortable in the open above-ground, and if they can't live underground they'll create above-ground structures with interiors that mimic the conditions of being underground (the effect can be observed amongst dwarven diaspora in human cities).
They also have an aversion to the ocean, which can be strong enough to manifest as hatred and fear that's outright superstitious. Dwarves will wholeheartedly insist that the ocean is evil and it is out to get you. ...But in fairness, as Umberlee is the ocean deity they're... not wrong.
Dwarves are infamous for being prickly, stubborn, distrustful and greedy. The last trait is confused by humans and halflings to be the same as their own desire to amass personal wealth - and they're wrong. It isn't about the monetary value or the luxury and comfort it purchases, dwarves are instinctually drawn to the skill that went into a piece.
Dwarven philosophy has been built around this, and holds that everything can be better than it is: there is not a thing in the world that cannot be improved upon (and helping things improve is a wonderful thing). Elven philosophies of leaving things - especially nature - as untouched as possible are alien in the eyes of the Ahrraem, who are left to assume it's because the elves can't be bothered to put in the effort of improving things (especially because the dwarves know that elves can produce works of expert craftsmanship when they chose to).
-
Dwarves have some... interesting stereotypes about other races:
All halflings are liars by inherent nature (as are orcs and giants) -
A human will sleep with anything, given the excuse. Humans will also tarnish metals by touching them, so keep them away from your crafts. -
Elves clearly have the same love of fine crafts that the Ahrraem do, but as they're too lazy to make it themselves, they put on a front of indifference to get others to let down their guard. Then they steal the hard work of others. Don't let them touch enchanted objects - they fickle fey bastards will suck the magic out.
On the other hand, dwarves hold a great deal of respect for gnomes, who have a similar love of craftsmanship, and the two have always gotten along throughout history.
--------
Entertainment:
Dancing is a major part of dwarven culture - their traditional music is rhythmic, heavy with drumbeats and metallic percussion instruments, while being devoid of soft sounds and wind instruments. While their dances are private affairs kept out of view of non-dwarves, dwarves also enjoy watching public dance performances put on by other races.
Instruments that feature strings are not usually plucked by hand. They resemble pianos, with the strings tied to keys which are struck with implements akin to drumsticks (in the form of small hammers). If the settlement has access to volcanic vents - or similar structures that pressurised gases can be filtered through - dwarves may construct large pipe organs. Many, smaller, versions of these instruments look something like accordions with metal strings.
Vocal accompaniment takes the form of drones and plainsong chants.
-
Dwarves have their own adventuring bands known as "brotherhoods" - the name started because groups of young dwarven men would get together and go out questing and seeking danger and riches to impress their prospective brides. Dwarven women totally ignored that part, decided it looked like fun and formed their own brotherhoods. Many tales about dwarven adventurers involve a young dwarven woman heading out to rescue her SO from a dragon, or whatever nonsense he's gotten himself into. Brotherhoods may be single gender or mixed gender teams, but they are referred to as such regardless. Some of them have included non-dwarves.
Brotherhoods are treated a lot like sports teams, with their own supporters and rival brotherhoods. Individual members, and possibly the whole team, may achieve celebrity status.
-
Society:
Dwarven culture values loyalty to clan and blood ties over all other bonds (although these things are certainly valuable), although in practice individuals don't follow that pattern reliably.
The Clan: Historically, the clan was the centre which all dwarven life revolved around. Over time - especially in Shield dwarven culture - this has loosened. For many dwarves, their clan is more of a social club one is born into, and you get together for family gatherings and share a drink and maybe play cards or something. In the furthest North, some shield dwarves have abandoned the concept altogether.
The generic term for the head of a clan is the chief, although there are variant terms in the Northern and Southern hemisphere.
Clans have appointed champions, "the fists of the clan" elite dwarven warriors who have proved themselves in tests of combat to earn the position. They maintain the clan's police forces
Clans are overseen by the elders - those who wield influence due to some combination of personal accomplishment, wealth and/or age. This council votes on clan policy - traditionally a marriage must be approved by the elders to be legitimised in dwarven society, and they have the right to exile those they don't approve of (which may happen if a dwarf ignores them and goes ahead with marrying a match they don't approve of.) However, prior to the Thunder Blessing, when dwarven fertility dropped so low that the Folk almost went extinct, the elders lost a significant amount of influence in this manner. No clan could afford to exile their members lightly, and any and every marriage that could possibly provide children was desperately needed.
A dwarven "house" refers to either the ruling family within a clan, or the ruling clan of a dwarven settlement that contains multiple clans. In such cases the current ruler will not be referred to as "king/queen" but with a lesser noble title such as "duke/duchess." Most royal lines have been long since lost, and the vast majority of dwarven rulers are elected. Even those who have inherited based on their bloodline won't be able to hold their throne if the populace doesn't want them there.
-
Traditionally children are raised communally in tight family units, with clan elders overseeing their upbringing and education and planning their future. Education usually involves literacy and training in a trade, or multiple and the age of majority is 40. Each adult is expected to be capable of doing their part to support themselves, their family, and their clan.
Courtship and Marriage: Dwarves, like elves, refer to their spouses as their "mates," or as "wives/husbands/spouses."
The traditional dwarven wedding is a very family-heavy affair. Anybody who can't be there on account of being dead will be represented by their weapons, sitting in the audience. The ceremony includes a blessing chant; the recitation of both dwarves' entire family line from the most famous known ancestor down to the dwarf getting marries, to remind them of the proud line that they are continuing, and that they have a duty to.
Courtship begins with sending gifts of poems, battle spoils and/or jewellery crafted by the dwarf's own hand, in the hope of impressing the target of affection with one's skill. Hopefully this becomes mutual, and this gift exchange will continue for years. If they're still interested, the dwarves will begin living and working together (be that adventuring or in a more mundane work situation). This is a trial period, so that the dwarves can learn each other's personalities in-depth and get a feel for how well they live together. If this trial period is successful then marriage follows.
Marriage is the province of the goddess Berronar Truesilver, and generally the marriage is sealed with the exchange of two silver rings (her holy symbol). If either (or both) of the dwarves involved are entering this marriage with less than honest intentions the deity will cause the ring/s to tarnish and crumble before all present.
An alternate form of marriage available to dwarves is blood-betrothal, which is less official and more popular with those who are less keen on ceremony and clan duty. The betrothal must be witnessed by at least one dwarf and officiated and sanctioned by a noble (who can be of any race - they don't need to be dwarven). The spouses-to-be mingle their blood and exchange a kiss, before whispering their names to one another. They turn to the witnesses and declare themselves, with their full names, as each other's mates. Thus the marriage is official.
Married dwarves are not expected to live together, and many may live and work separately, making time for each other now and then.
-
Historically, dwarves have also bolstered their dwindling birth rates by taking non-dwarves as spouses (humans, elves, halflings and gnomes). Prior to the Year of Thunder, non-dwarves who married into a clan and provided children and helped preserve the dwarven way of life were viewed with high levels of honour and respect.

An editorial published in October about the silent long covid pandemic.
By
Francisco Westermeier and Nuno SepĂşlveda
1 Context There is an urgent public health problem due to the rising number of individuals who remain with their health and daily functions impaired for months and even years after a SARS-CoV-2 infection (1). This impairment is encapsulated by a new medical condition known as post COVID-19 syndrome, post-acute COVID-19 syndrome, post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and persistent post-COVID-19 syndrome. The general public knows this condition as long COVID (LC), a coined termed by patients at the beginning of the pandemic (1).
Individuals with LC report experiencing many symptoms, including fatigue, post-exertional malaise (PEM), and sleep disturbances (2). Coincidently, these specific symptoms are the heart of the most consensual case definitions of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a “older” disease often triggered by an infection (e.g., infectious mononucleosis) and also causing high levels of physical and mental distress (3). It is then no surprise that individuals with LC can also receive an ME/CFS diagnosis (4, 5). This diagnostic overlap is the main reason for the growing interest in understanding the medical relationship between LC and ME/CFS in order to accelerate the development of efficacious pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for the benefit of the patients (6–8).
The present Research Topic aimed then at gathering new data on the public health and medicine of LC and ME/CFS. The Research Topic compiled 11 papers of which nine were original research. Seven papers concerned LC directly or indirectly. The remaining four papers focused on ME/CFS specifically or together with LC. Below the reader can find a brief account of the research conducted.
2 Contributions to current knowledge on the public health impact of LC Four large-scale studies on LC surveyed more than 1,000 individuals. These studies evaluated different health-related metrics after a SARS-CoV-2 infection using retrospective data or convenient cross-sectional surveys.
From the United States of America, Sandoval et al. reported a retrospective study on 91,007 adult patients from Southeast Texas. The study aimed at evaluating the chance of hospital readmission after a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The main finding is that 21% of the individuals were readmitted to the hospital within 90 days after infection. The chance of hospital admission seemed to be dependent on different factors, including a dose-response relationship with area deprivation index.
From 16 countries in Latin America, with the special focus on Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and Chile, Angarita-Fonseca et al. estimated the prevalence of individuals with LC using an online survey of 2,466 people. In this survey, 1,178 individuals (47.8%) reported experiencing symptoms after 3 months of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. This survey also suggested several risk factors for LC, including a COVID-19 episode earlier in the pandemic, old age, no vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, and a high number of pre-existing co-morbidities.
From Brazil, Malheiro et al. conducted a telephone-based survey in the city of SĂŁo Paulo on 291 hospitalized and 1,118 non-hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The study also aimed at estimating the prevalence of LC at least 3 months after infection and to determine the respective risk factors. The study estimated the LC prevalence at 47.1 and 49.5% for these two populations, respectively. These estimates were in almost perfect agreement with the ones reported by Angarita-Fonseca et al.. Again, pre-existing co-morbidities such as hypertension are possible risk factors for LC manifestations.
From Italy, Gagliotti et al. estimated the incidence and determined the factors affecting the access to specific healthcare services up to a year after the acute phase of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study was conducted in a large number of healthy individuals (n = 35,128 and 88,881 from Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, respectively). This study found that more than 20% of the surveyed individuals accessed a health service, mostly outpatient care more than drug prescription as follow-up of their SARS-CoV-2 infection. Whether this access was a direct cause of LC specifically remained an open question from this study.
The three remaining studies on LC contemplated a moderate number of surveyed individuals. From Castellón in Spain, Pérez Catalán et al. provided evidence that the quality of life of 486 Spanish patients tended to remain affected after 1 year of their COVID-19-related hospitalization. This particular study was already criticized due to its reliance on telephone interviews (9). From Vancouver in Canada, Magel et al. followed up 88 patients previously hospitalized due to COVID-19 complications. This study focused on how the levels of fatigue evolved over time. The study that 67% (n = 58) of individuals experienced fatigue at 3 months post-infection, but this percentage dropped to 60% (n = 47) after 6 months. The same drop was observed in patients experiencing substantial fatigue (16–6% after 3 and 6 months after infection, respectively). Accordingly to other studies published in this Research Topic, the study also provided evidence for a positive association between the number of pre-existing comorbidities and fatigue. From Bari in Italy, Resta et al. reported the single study conducted in a clinical setting. The study focused post-COVID exertion dyspnoea in 318 patients at 3 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, the study participants performed a 6-min walking test after which 59.7% showed evidence of dyspnoea. This finding showed that exertion dyspnea might be part of the PEM spectrum in LC.
3 Research on ME/CFS with possible implications to LC Four papers concentrated their attention on ME/CFS with possible implications to LC. For example, the new study of Hannestad et al. provided evidence for an increase of IgG antibodies against human adenovirus after a SARS-CoV-2 infection in a Swedish cohort of patients with ME/CFS. This finding suggested that a SARS-CoV-2 infection could prompt the reactivation of the human adenovirus. Such a reactivation might explain the worsening of symptoms in some patients with ME/CFS after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, as suggested elsewhere (10). Another example is the perspective paper of Scheibenbogen et al. who compiled and discussed a list of candidate drugs that could treat both ME/CFS and LC patients. This perspective paper also provided an important concept for developing clinical trial networks in this era of LC and ME/CFS. In turn, Grabowska et al. discussed the concept of extending current large-scale prevalence studies of LC to ME/CFS, a disease whose incidence and prevalence remain largely elusive (11). According to these authors, estimating ME/CFS prevalence comes at a minimal cost in such studies, but requires the recognition of PEM as one of the cardinal symptoms for ME/CFS diagnosis. The recognition of PEM in medical care is also important, as demonstrated by a new study of Wormgoor and Rodenburg on a cohort of Norwegian ME/CFS patients. However, data from this new study suggested that PEM remains a neglected symptom by specialized medical staff and healthcare providers.
4 Two final remarks Most of the new contributions published in this Research Topic were based on the evaluation of simple metrics aiming at capturing different sequelae facets of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. These metrics are fundamental to understand the impact of the problem on public health and society, as reviewed elsewhere (1). At the same time, the abundance of descriptive studies suggested that we are still at the early stage of addressing the LC problem. In this scenario, the great benefit of this Research Topic seemed to come from an integrated collection of papers where LC and ME/CFS are somehow put side-by-side. This is the case of Scheibenbogen et al. who aimed at leveraging pre-existing knowledge on ME/CFS pathogenesis and treatment with a potential impact on the healthcare of LC patients.
All the original research articles published in this Research Topic had the curiosity of coming from studying European, North American, and South American populations. This illustrates the wide extension of the LC challenge across the world. However, no papers from Asia and Africa were published in this Research Topic. In the case of Asia, it was a simple coincidence with several papers being submitted, but subsequently rejected for one reason or another. This contrasted with Africa from which no submission was received. Interestingly, the current prevalence estimates of LC in Africa (12) are similar to the ones found by Malheiro et al. in SĂŁo Paulo Brazil and Angarita-Fonseca et al. across Latin America. Given this statistical coincidence, we had the expectation to collect some research studies on LC from this continent. Does this mean that the interest on LC is fading away in Africa even if there is evidence for an accumulation of cases elsewhere? Perhaps this is the right time for revitalizing the LC research in Africa to determine whether this continent is an exception in the global burden of this new post-pandemic condition.

Chapter 16: Spiralling
After ending a five-year relationship, you pour all your energy into work. Your latest assignment? Staying at a popular bed-and-breakfast to gather information. It should be a piece of cake... If only the owner isn't the man you scolded on the street.
Jing Yuan/You

Chapter index at the end of chapter one
Caelus’s uncle walks up to them. He glances at Dan Heng but doesn’t acknowledge him. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost, Jingliu. Are you that surprised to see me?”
Jingliu looks at Dan Heng and nods towards the restaurant. “Let’s go.”
“I’m here to make you a new offer.”
Dan Heng shoots him a cold look. What is he talking about?
“It’ll work in your favour.”
Was I not clear the first time?” Jingliu asks, glaring at him. “No means no. Or, is rejection something you have a difficult time accepting?”
“You don’t know the terms or conditions. Are you sure you want to give me your answer so quickly?”
“If your reputation is anything to go by, I don’t need to know your terms and conditions.”
She turns around but stops when she hears:
“It’ll only get harder and harder to keep your gym running. You, out of all people, should know that.”
“...She doesn’t want to talk to you.”
Dan Heng’s voice has never felt more comforting.
“Get lost.”
He comes up beside her, but as they walk into the restaurant together, they hear him ask one last question: “You can’t rely on the so-called ‘community’ forever.”
Dan Heng has so many questions, and they won’t stop coming. The waiter ushers them to a table, and as soon as he leaves, Dan Heng looks directly at Jingliu. He doesn’t need to say a word. His face says it all. He’s confused as to why Caelus’s uncle is suddenly in Xianzhou, frustrated as he remembers his friend, and worried about what Caelus's uncle has to do with Jingliu.
“I wasn’t expecting him to be here out of all places," Jingliu says quietly.
Dan Heng pours her some water. “...Has something happened with the gym?”
Her silence makes him look at her. It’s a question that Dan Heng thought would lighten the situation. Surely, Caelus’s uncle is here just to cause trouble. Jingliu will humbly brag about how well her business is doing, and—
“...It’s starting to struggle.”
It’s the first time Dan Heng knows she's anxious. She isn’t looking at him, and she’s slightly fidgeting. She’s also not rubbing her thumb against her palm.
“Those two people you saw at the gym the other day,” she continues, referring to the day you and the brothers came to box. “They were affiliated with him.”
Jingliu was stretching in an area of the gym when one of her staff walked up to her.
“Jingliu, some people are here to see you.”
“I wasn’t expecting anyone,” she said, standing.
Then, to her surprise, her staff handed her two business cards. She took them and saw they were from a big gym chain in the city. Jingliu had heard about them as she’d been exposed to their aggressive online marketing.
What did they want with her? Jingliu had a hunch.
When she entered the lobby, a man and woman immediately approached her, talking to her as if they’d already met. After the introductions, they jumped into a conversation about how they thought her gym had so much potential, and that they could help her become “bigger and better.”
This was so out of the blue that Jingliu would've had a good laugh and turned them away. But, the words wouldn’t come out. Perhaps it was because she knew that this was an opportunity to get her out of the red. It was something she kept to herself: the gym was starting to struggle.
As she led the man and the woman to a room upstairs, Jingliu remembered the conversation with her father to sell the place and move on to something else. Of course, that was easier said than done. But she had to agree with her father on one thing: her growth—the gym's growth—was stagnating.
Between Jingliu and the man and the woman was a small, glass coffee table. They were sitting on the couches across from each other when the man said they’d like to acquire her business.
“We have global branches with a lot of high-end clients,” the woman said. “Also adding you to our roster of trainers will be very beneficial to us considering your background. I guarantee you’ll get tons of clients from the start. With our branding and reputation and your expertise, we know this will be successful.”
It sounded… okay. While listening to the man talk about how they would handle everything so she only had to focus on training plans and the like, a name stood out that made her instantly say:
“...Who?”
“Oh, he’s our new CEO.” The man said the name again, and Jingliu was certain. “He’s quite well known—”
“I’m sorry,” Jingliu interrupted. “This won’t work.”
“...Is this what’s been on your mind?”
Jingliu looks up at Dan Heng from her food. He hasn’t touched his food since the waiter brought it to them during Jingliu’s storytime.
“My dad wants me to sell the place and start something new.” She sighs, gesturing for him to eat. “He’s aware of the finances, so he knows about the decline. Looking back, I think it's because he didn’t want to be so harsh about it.”
“...Then, would you have accepted their offer if Caelus’s uncle wasn’t involved?” Dan Heng picks up a fork and begins to eat.
“They showed up out of nowhere and suddenly said ‘Hey, we want to buy your business’.” Jingliu gives Dan Heng a deadpan look. “I’d like a phone call first.”
“I guess they were too eager and too fast.”
“There’s a word for that.” Jingliu briefly points her fork at him. “Impatience. Unhealthy impatience.”
“...Still, it sounds like they did their homework.”
“I guess I’ll give them points for that.”
“For doing the bare minimum? You deserve better than that.”
Jingliu almost laughs. “Since when were you such a sweet talker, hm?”
“I’m always like this.” She gives him a deadpan look to which he asks, “What?”
“You’re full of surprises.”
Is that a compliment? He can’t tell. Regardless, he uses a clean spoon to scoop some food onto his plate. “Have you thought about it? Trying something new?"
“My dad and I have different opinions on what I should do. It’s just…” Dan Heng waits patiently for her to continue. Finally, she says, “...I just wish he’d stop bringing up the accident.”
“The accident…? Why would he bring that up?”
“...He thinks I can’t sell it because I can’t let go of the past. But, I don’t want to give it up so quickly."
Dan Heng doesn’t need to ask to know that she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. Everything costs money, and when you’re in the red, it’s harder to take risks. But, most importantly, he knows she’s not going to ask for help. It’s already a feat that she admitted her troubles this far.
“If things get better, do you think he’ll still ask you to sell it?”
“...Hard to say… I… have a hunch that he doesn’t want to hurt my feelings by being so blunt.” Dan Heng puts his hand on top of hers. “A part of me wants to prove I can save it.” Her hand underneath his makes a fist. "I want to save it and expand to new ventures."
Dan Heng should’ve known.
“Greedy as always.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“It is,” Dan Heng says. “Greed is a virtue and a sin.”
Jingliu slightly leans forward out of curiosity. “Oh? Why do you say that?”
“It's motivation to do more… to go after what you want. But people always crave something better. They’ll always want more, hence a ruthless cycle of never being satisfied with what you have.”
“I guess that means I should take it one step at a time.”
"I also don’t want you to just let it go either," Dan Heng says quietly. "We made a lot of memories there.”
“That’s true… Who knows? Maybe we’ll end up becoming business partners one day. That’ll have its own set of challenges, but…”
“...It’d be rewarding,” Dan Heng finishes, “with the right person.”
“The right person, huh?”
Dan Heng gives her the largest piece of meat from his plate as she finishes the rest of her food.
“And who’s your definition of the right person?”
“I’m looking at her.”
She stops, slowly looks up, and meets his eyes. Her mind unexpectedly goes blank as she desperately searches for something… anything to say. His little smile suddenly makes her heart race, and even when he looks back down to finish his food, she’s still coming up empty.

After dinner, Blade dropped you and Welt back at the bed and breakfast as Jing Yuan had to take an important, work-related call. You’re doing some work in the small living room when your phone goes off. While you usually won’t bother with an unknown number, you have a hunch who it is.
“Hello?”
“Hi. I’m a journalist at Star Media. Also a friend of Herta’s."
Your hunch is right. Once you confirm that she called the right person, the conversation picks up and turns to Caelus's uncle.
“...So, he was under investigation?” you ask.
“That’s right. It was also a family-owned business, and it was the sister of the man he was threatening who reached out to me.”
“Herta said that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him. I don’t… The logic doesn’t make sense.”
“I get what you mean,” she says. “If he was threatening him, there should be some evidence, at least.” A sigh. “And, well, there was. They wanted to sue him when it began, but… they took back the lawsuit.”
“What? Why?”
“It started small. As in, the things weren’t as bad… but then it escalated. It got to a point where the family was terrified of what would happen to their reputation if their dirty laundry went public.”
“If they did, the things he was threatening them with had to be true,” you say. “At least, most of it.”
“I’ll say that they have their fair share of skeletons in the closet. From what the sister told me, not everything was true. But they considered the risks. It was either everything getting out or nothing at all.”
“But why would he target them? A family-owned business… What was the point of threatening them?”
“They were friends-turned-business partners in the beginning. It can be a messy boundary when personal and professional relationships get mixed up… I don’t know too much about what happened. But, they had a fallout, and things turned ugly.”
“...So, they dropped the lawsuit… Was that it?”
“Anticlimactic, huh?”
You lean forward with one elbow resting on your knee. “What was the story back then? You were taking their side, weren’t you?”
“The story was to paint them as victims since he had a bigger influence. Everyone loves a good story where the smaller guy takes on an 'influential' figure.” You hear a few mouse clicks, and then she says, “This happened before the news about Caelus broke out. So, maybe calling him influential is exaggerating a little. But, he was already making his mark in the business world. Speaking about Caelus… What do you know about what happened to him?”
“It’s just as messy as the story you just told me, I suppose.” By the end of telling her what you know, you say, “...We want to bring justice to Caelus.”
“It definitely sounds like his uncle was blackmailing him… but it’d be hard to prove.”
You wish you could say it isn’t. But, she’s right. Is it even possible to prove the threats are the reason Caelus died?
“...It’d be something he had to admit,” you say. “He’d have to admit that he done it with malicious intentions.”
“I don’t know how much you’re going to get out of him, unfortunately. He was quite the character back then.”
“How so?”
“I think he knew what I was trying to get out of him, so he kept changing the narrative. He kept painting himself as a victim instead. I can’t go into details of what I know about the family, but… while they weren’t the cleanest bunch, he exaggerated their wrongdoings. If you didn’t do your homework, you’d easily believe everything he was saying.”
“Oh, I can already imagine what he’ll say if I go to talk to him,” you mutter.
“I’ll need permission to share my recordings and emails regarding him… but my advice would be to be as prepared as possible.”
"Do you still have their numbers? The man and his sister.”
“I could give you their contact, but it might be a bit of a stretch. They want to forget about the whole thing.”
Then, she gives you two names and two numbers.
“You know, I’m quite surprised at how much you managed to discover what happened to Caelus,” she says. “It was a story that no one could get a lot of information on.”
“I think I got a bit lucky. Or… Maybe it was the timing. Regardless, I wouldn’t have gotten what I have without people coming out with information.”
“You’re still working for Star Rails, aren’t you?”
You lean back on the couch. “That’s right.”
“Have you thought about doing an article about all of this? It’d be huge.”
While you don’t want to think badly of Herta’s friend, you wonder if she’ll take the chance if you don’t.
“I have, but the narrative can change at any time. There must be proof that Star Rails knew what he was doing. That’s another monster in itself.”
She chuckles. “True. I was just going to say that you have an eye for news. If you do write an article, you should submit it to us.”
“Well, let’s see what I end up with in the end.”
After thanking her for telling you what she knows, you end the call and put your phone on the table. You never thought finding out the truth would be easy. But now you have your doubts. Will you be able to get Caelus's uncle to admit his malicious intentions? What about Star Rails? Is it possible you're looking at this too one-sidedly? Before your thoughts can spiral out of control, you stand and head into the room to grab your pyjamas before heading to the washroom for a hot shower.
◆◆◆
Pom has just finished grabbing dinner and groceries when he sees a somewhat familiar man standing outside and looking into the bed and breakfast resort. Sipping his chai tea latte, Pom narrows his eyes as he gets closer. Is that who he thinks it is?
The man notices him—probably out of the corner of his eye—and turns with a hand in his pocket. Pom almost drops his drink.
“Long time no see.”
Pom recognizes the voice.
There’s a small pause as Pom gathers his thoughts. Finally, he asks, “What are you doing here?”
“Why is everyone so surprised? This is my nephew’s hometown. I can’t visit?” Pom doesn’t want to answer that question. Caelus’s uncle nods toward the bed and breakfast. “Jing Yuan’s done well for himself.”
“Are you a fan?”
“This is what Caelus could have had.”
Pom frowns. “If only he listened to you, right?”
Caelus’s uncle walks up to him. “It’s been so long, Pom. The fact that you’re still here… I take it you haven’t found the answers you’re looking for.”
“Why are you bringing that up?”
“I was just surprised to see you just as you’re surprised to see me. You and Caelus were friends. I didn’t think you’d still be here after he left.”
Well, where else is Pom supposed to go?
“So, what are you doing now?”
“...That’s none of your business," Pom mutters.
“I don’t know what I did to make you hate me so much, but I suppose it’s because of Jing Yuan and everyone else's influence. All of you still see me as a bad guy because of what happened to Caelus.”
“...Pom?” You’ve just come out of the resort wearing shorts and a thin jacket. You glance at the man, knowing exactly who he is.
“Oh!” Pom says your name and walks up to you. “What’re you doing out here?”
“Wanted to get some fresh air.” In truth, you’d wanted to go to bed early, but you couldn’t sleep. So, you decided to take a little walk outside. You were close to the entrance when you heard Pom's voice.
You look at Caelus’s uncle who’s also looking at you. Does he know who you are? You’re getting anxious but it doesn’t show.
“Let’s go,” Pom says quietly.
You follow Pom inside without looking back.
A short distance in, you turn to Pom. “...That was Caelus’s uncle, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah.”
“Was everything okay?”
“Yeah… I wasn’t expecting to see him.”
“...Do you know him? I’m curious because, well, a lot’s been happening.”
Pom sighs. “Let me guess… It’s about whether or not he had something to do with how Caelus died, right? It’s like an open secret.”
“An open secret that needs proof to get anywhere,” you say quietly.
“I don’t know him exactly… I formally met him once. So, I was surprised that he even remembered me.”
Now, this sparks your curiosity. It’s then you realize how little you know about Pom.
“Don’t tell me he wanted something from you.”
“No, nothing like that. There’s nothing he would want from me. He was just surprised that I’m still here.”
“...Still here? But, you’re from Xianzhou, aren’t you?”
Pom gives you a little smile. “Not... exactly. My mother was, apparently."
His mother?
“How did you end up living here?”
"The story I've been told was that my mom gave me up to an orphanage in the city when I was really young. Growing up, I ended up in a lot of different families. And, well, by the time I graduated high school, I'd been rejected by all the colleges I applied to because of my terrible grades... It's not like I had anything to lose, so I came here to hopefully find her with the little money I saved up from doing odd jobs." Pom smiles, but it doesn't reach his eyes. "But, I didn't know if I had the courage to face her. It's not like I had a lot going for me."
"...Did you eventually find her?"
"...No. But, some people knew her. Said she got involved with a good-for-nothing man and got pregnant at a young age. The last time rumour I heard about her was that she went overseas."
The sad, little smile on his face almost makes you hug him.
“I met Caelus by complete chance, and… we ended up talking for hours," Pom says. "I can still remember the look on his face when I told him I came here with pretty much nothing. No plan. No money. No future."
“Pom…”
“One thing led to another, and I ended up helping Caelus at the hotel sometimes. He never took it for granted either. He paid me and even gave me a place to sleep when it was technically time for me to leave. Anyway, I eventually met his uncle and Jing Yuan… but I only saw his uncle on a few occasions. I never thought he’d remember me since that was like”—a sigh—”gosh… ten years ago or something?”
"How did you end up working for Jing Yuan, if I may ask?"
"Oh, gosh... Well, to start, I… After what happened to Caelus, I fell into depression for a little bit. I didn’t know what I was going to do. The friends I met... Everyone was focused on their lives as they should be, but it felt like I was dropping straight into hell. I had some dark thoughts at the time. But Jing Yuan and I got back in touch. We were talking, and he said he was looking to employ someone at his bed and breakfast.” Pom looks down. “I was super insecure because I didn’t have anything going on for me. Like… no degree, no solid experience…”
“...But you work hard. I’ve seen it myself the times I visited when you were helping Caelus,” Jing Yuan said over the phone. “Think about it and let me know if—”
“I’ll do it.”
“I knew if I didn’t take it, I’d be dumber than dumb,” Pom continues. He sighs. “But, I think that’s also when I knew that I wanted to continue living. Jing Yuan was also going through a rough patch then… I’m sure you know all about it.” You nod. “But, even though we are ‘more than friends’ now”, he always made an effort to show that he cared.”
You give him a friendly hug. “Our lives wouldn’t be the same if you weren’t in it, Pom.”
“Right?” Pom squeezes you back. “But, anyway, the rest is history.” Then, he chuckles. “Proud to say that my hard work did pay off with my yearly salary increases and bonuses.”
You let him go. “Just goes to show that as long as you work hard, you always gain something from it.”
“...Which is why I’ve been thinking… Ah, never mind. It’s nothing!”
“Oh, come on, you can’t do that. Now, you got me all curious.”
“You’ll probably find out soon enough.”
“Fine…”
“By the way… When you said a lot’s been happening… What exactly has been happening?”
“Eh… Well… Let’s just say that I need a confession,” you say. “That’ll be the happy ending everyone deserves.”
“A confession, huh?”
You and Pom turn around, and Pom immediately says, “Geezus, Welt! How long were you standing there?”
“Calm down, Pom. I wasn’t eavesdropping if that’s what you were thinking.”
“He just happened to pass by,” you say. “Right, Welt?”
Welt walks up to you and Pom. “You two are out late.”
“Right back at you,” Pom says. “Can’t sleep?”
“Came out to clear my head.”
“Ooh. It’s one of those writer things, isn’t it?”
“Sure. Let’s go with that.”
You’re walking between Welt and Pom when you ask, “How’s your book coming along?”
“You do know that's one of the forbidden questions to ask a writer, right?" Welt asks with a soft chuckle.
“Well, someone’s gotta ask the tough questions.”
“I’ve been getting inspired, that’s for sure.”
Pom leans closer to you. “So, like, have you and Jing Yuan done anything weird thanks to him?”
“Of course not.”
“Doesn’t mean it can’t happen.”
You give him a deadpan look.
Then, your phone goes off, and you see it’s a text from Kafka.
I have news.

UK100 Swings Higher, GBPUSD Advances
UK stocks ended mixed on Thursday, unsettled by weak British Retail Consortium (BRC) data, and with clothing discount chain Primark cutting its guidance.
The BRC said consumer expectations over the next three months of their personal financial situation dropped to minus 4 in January, while expectations of the state of the economy worsened to minus 34 and personal spending on retail fell to minus 9.
On foreign exchanges, sterling ticked higher amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding any trade tariffs new US President Donald Trump may implement. Versus a weaker US dollar, the pound edged up 0.08% to 1.2327, while against the euro, sterling added 0.13% to 1.1849.

Traders were parsing a wide-ranging address by President Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos. US stocks were mixed in morning trade as more focus remains on White House chatter than economic factors and the impending first Federal Reserve policy meeting of 2025 next week.
US data on Thursday showed initial jobless claims increased by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 223,000 for the week ended January 18, only slightly above forecasts for 220,000 claims.
At the stock market close in London, the FTSE 100 index was up 0.2% at 8,565, but the FTSE 250 index was down 0.3% at 20,520.
AB Foods was a big FTSE 100 faller, down 3.0%, as the food to retail conglomerate said its clothing stores business, Primark is now targeting low-single digit sales growth in 2025 compared to previous guidance of a mid-single digit rise, after weak trading in the UK.
Sainsbury shed 1.6% after the supermarkets group announced it will cut more than 3,000 jobs and plans to shut down its remaining in-store cafes as part of a major overhaul. The headcount reduction represents about 2% of the company's current 148,000-strong workforce.
And JD Sports lost 1.6% knocked by the Primark news, a profit warning from German firm Puma, as well as a downgrade to 'neutral' from 'buy' by analysts at Citi following the at-leisure-retailer’s own soft festive trading update.

UK100Roll H1
On the second line, car dealership Inchcape dropped 15.3% following a downgrade to 'neutral' from 'overweight' by analysts at JPMorgan Chase.
CMC Markets tumbled 16.8% after posting a very brief, and uninspiring trading update, even though the spread betting platform operator said it remains on track to deliver full-year net operating income in line with previous guidance.
And spread-betting rival IG Group dropped 6.2% as worries about active client numbers weighed against strong interim results, with more than a 30pc jump in profits, a hike in dividend, and an extension to its share buyback program.
But on the upside, precision instruments maker Spectris jumped 10.5% after revealing that it expects its adjusted operating profit for 2024 to be above consensus after a strong fourth quarter.
And Mitie rose 1.1% after the outsourcing group delivered record quarterly revenues in the three months ended 31 December 2024, reflecting strong organic growth.

Gastric Bypass Surgery in Kalyan: A Comprehensive Guide to Weight Loss Surgery
Obesity is a growing concern in India and around the world, leading to various health complications such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease. For those struggling with severe obesity, lifestyle changes and conventional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise may not be sufficient. In such cases, medical interventions like gastric bypass surgery offer a viable and effective solution.
In Kalyan, a city with a rapidly expanding healthcare infrastructure, individuals are increasingly turning to gastric bypass surgery to help them achieve lasting weight loss and improve their overall health. This article provides an in-depth look at gastric bypass surgery, the benefits, and what patients in Kalyan can expect from the procedure.
What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), is a type of weight loss surgery that helps individuals lose weight by changing the way the stomach and small intestine handle food. The procedure involves creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach, which is then directly connected to a part of the small intestine. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold, thereby limiting the number of calories absorbed by the body.
By reducing the stomach’s capacity, gastric bypass surgery helps patients feel full more quickly, leading to a significant reduction in food intake. Additionally, the procedure alters the way hormones involved in hunger and satiety are released, helping to regulate appetite and improve insulin sensitivity.
Who is a Candidate for Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery is typically recommended for individuals who meet the following criteria:
Body Mass Index (BMI) Over 40: The surgery is usually considered for people with a BMI of 40 or higher, which is classified as severe obesity.
BMI Over 35 with Obesity-Related Health Issues: Individuals with a BMI between 35 and 40 may also be eligible if they have obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or joint problems.
Failed Non-Surgical Weight Loss Methods: Gastric bypass surgery is often recommended for people who have tried various weight loss methods (such as dieting, exercise, and medications) without achieving significant or sustainable results.
Commitment to Lifestyle Changes: Successful outcomes after gastric bypass surgery require long-term commitment to a healthy lifestyle, including proper diet, regular physical activity, and follow-up medical care.
The Procedure of Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and can be done using two approaches:
Open Surgery: In open surgery, a large incision is made in the abdomen to access the stomach and intestines. This approach is less common due to the longer recovery time compared to laparoscopic surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Laparoscopic gastric bypass, or "keyhole surgery," involves making several small incisions through which a camera and specialized instruments are inserted. This minimally invasive approach allows for quicker recovery, less scarring, and a reduced risk of infection.
The steps involved in the surgery include:
Creating a Small Stomach Pouch: The surgeon divides the stomach to create a small pouch about the size of an egg. This pouch is where food will go after the surgery.
Rerouting the Small Intestine: The surgeon then connects the small pouch directly to the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. This limits the amount of food absorbed and reduces calorie intake.
Hormonal Changes: The procedure also induces changes in gut hormones, which can help reduce hunger and improve metabolic conditions like diabetes.
Benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery has proven to be an effective method for weight loss, and its benefits extend beyond just shedding pounds. Some of the key benefits include:
Significant Weight Loss: Most patients experience a dramatic reduction in weight, often losing between 60% to 80% of their excess weight within the first year after surgery.
Improved Health Conditions: Many obesity-related health issues such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and joint pain improve significantly or even resolve completely after surgery.
Enhanced Quality of Life: As weight is reduced, many individuals experience a significant boost in their self-esteem, mobility, and overall quality of life. Daily tasks become easier, and there is often a marked improvement in mental health.
Long-Term Results: When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, gastric bypass surgery offers long-lasting weight loss. Studies show that many individuals maintain their weight loss for five years or longer.
Recovery After Gastric Bypass Surgery
After gastric bypass surgery, patients typically spend 2 to 3 days in the hospital for monitoring and recovery. The recovery process may vary depending on whether the surgery was done laparoscopically or through open surgery, but in general, patients can expect:
Initial Diet Restrictions: For the first few weeks, patients will be on a liquid or soft-food diet to allow the stomach and intestines to heal. Over time, the diet will gradually transition to solid foods.
Follow-up Care: Regular follow-up visits to the surgeon are essential to monitor weight loss progress, address any complications, and ensure that the patient is getting proper nutrition.
Exercise and Activity: Most patients are encouraged to gradually increase their physical activity as they recover, starting with light walking and progressing to more intense exercise.
Nutritional Supplements: After surgery, patients must take vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure they receive adequate nutrition, as the reduced stomach size may limit nutrient absorption.
Risks and Considerations
Like any major surgery, gastric bypass carries certain risks, including:
Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection at the incision sites.
Nutritional Deficiencies: The surgery can lead to deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, particularly iron, calcium, and vitamin B12. Lifelong supplementation is usually required.
Dumping Syndrome: Some patients experience dumping syndrome, where food moves too quickly through the stomach into the small intestine, causing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness.
Complications: Although rare, complications such as blood clots, internal bleeding, or leaks from the new stomach pouch may occur.
Gastric Bypass Surgery in Kalyan
In Kalyan, patients seeking gastric bypass surgery have access to state-of-the-art medical facilities and experienced surgeons who specialize in weight loss surgery. Clinics and hospitals in the area offer comprehensive care, including pre-surgery counseling, the surgical procedure itself, and post-surgery support to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
Choosing a reputable hospital for gastric bypass surgery in Kalyan ensures that you receive the highest standard of care. The healthcare professionals in Kalyan are well-equipped to guide you through the process, provide personalized advice, and support you throughout your weight loss journey.
Conclusion
Gastric bypass surgery can be a life-changing procedure for individuals struggling with severe obesity. With the right medical guidance and support, it can lead to significant weight loss, improved health, and a better quality of life. For those considering gastric bypass surgery in Kalyan, it’s essential to consult with a skilled bariatric surgeon who can help you determine if the procedure is right for you. The city’s hospitals and healthcare providers offer top-notch services, making it a great place to begin your weight loss journey and achieve lasting health benefits.

World’s 500 Richest People Surpassed $10 Trillion in Wealth This Year (Bloomberg) The world’s 500 richest people got vastly richer in 2024, with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jensen Huang leading the group of billionaires to a new milestone: A combined $10 trillion net worth. An indomitable rally in US technology stocks played a key role in turbocharging the trio’s wealth, as well as the fortunes of Larry Ellison, Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The eight tech titans alone gained more than $600 billion this year, 43% of the $1.5 trillion increase among the 500 richest people tracked by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The total value of the fortunes tracked by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index was $9.8 trillion at Monday’s close, down slightly from a Dec. 11 peak of $10.1 trillion following a post-Christmas selloff. Their wealth is similar in size to last year’s combined gross domestic products of Germany, Japan and Australia, according to data compiled by the World Bank.
Driver rams New Year's revelers in New Orleans, killing 10 (AP) A vehicle raced into a crowd of New Orleans revelers early on New Year's Day, killing 10 people and injuring 35 others in what the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism. The driver of the vehicle was killed in a firefight with police following the attack around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday along Bourbon Street in the city’s bustling French Quarter, the FBI said. After the vehicle came to a stop, the driver emerged from the truck and open fire on responding officers, New Orleans police said. Officers returned fire, striking and killing the driver. Two officers were shot and are in stable condition.
Dark New Year’s Eve in Puerto Rico (Bloomberg) Nearly all of Puerto Rico was without power Tuesday after its fragile electricity grid collapsed, triggering an island-wide blackout. The power outage started early in the morning and, by midday, about 85% of Puerto Rico’s 1.4 million customers remained without electricity, according to Luma Energy, the private company that operates the system. Officials said it may take 24 to 48 hours to fully resume service.
Ukraine halts transit of Russian gas to Europe after a prewar deal expired (AP) Ukraine on Wednesday halted Russian gas supplies to European customers that pass through the country, almost three years into Moscow’s all-out invasion of its neighbor, after a prewar transit deal expired. Ukraine’s energy minister, Herman Halushchenko, confirmed on Wednesday morning that Kyiv had stopped the gas flows “in the interest of national security.” Russia’s Gazprom said in a statement on Wednesday morning that it had been “deprived of the technical and legal ability to supply gas for transit through Ukraine,” due to Ukraine’s refusal to extend the deal. Even as Russian troops and tanks moved into Ukraine, Russian natural gas kept flowing through the country’s pipeline network—set up when Ukraine and Russia were both part of the Soviet Union—to Europe, under a five-year agreement that ran through the end of last year. Gazprom earned money from the gas and Ukraine collected transit fees. Before the war, Russia supplied nearly 40% of the European Union’s pipeline natural gas.
Dark Doldrums Overshadow Europe’s Energy Markets (NYT) Europe is watching the skies for a gremlin that can roil its energy markets and stoke political tensions between neighboring countries. This weather phenomenon, known as the Dunkelflaute, has become a source of frustration to government ministers and a potential pitfall on their journey to cleaner energy. A German term that translates to “dark doldrums,” Dunkelflaute refers to a spate of calm days when dense clouds descend over northern Europe. This weather pattern may occur two to 10 times a year, usually in the fall and winter, and lasts 24 hours or longer. In the past, these spells of murky quiet would have made little difference to energy markets in Europe. But in recent years, as countries like Germany and Britain have spent billions to tackle climate change by shifting to cleaner sources of energy, the Dunkelflaute has gained notoriety. A generation ago, Europe relied on steady, predictable flows of energy from nuclear and fossil fuel plants. Now, much of the region’s power comes from solar arrays and wind farms, whose output varies with the whims of the weather. During the gloomy stillness of a Dunkelflaute, solar panels produce little power and wind turbines slow to a halt. Without these two mainstays of renewable energy, grid operators need to call on backup power plants like natural-gas-fired generators.
Five killed and emergency workers targeted as firework chaos mars Germany’s New Year celebrations (CNN) Five people have been killed and dozens of emergency workers were injured as a spate of incidents involving fireworks marred New Year’s Eve celebrations in Germany. Despite calls for a nationwide ban on the private use of fireworks, they continue to be a significant part of New Year’s celebrations in the country, with thousands of the pyrotechnics set off on city streets each year. Among those killed were two people in the eastern state of Saxony, according to local public broadcaster MDR, including a 45-year-old man who was killed after handling what was described as a “firework bomb.” Firefighters and other emergency services personnel were targeted by the fireworks during festivities overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday, authorities said.
Myanmar’s War Has Made It the Global Crime Capital (NYT) The flower fields stretch out from the mountain village along most every road—fluttering patchworks of white and pink and purple. The beauty in this corner of Shan State, in northeastern Myanmar, might seem a respite from the country’s brutal civil war. Instead the blooms are a symptom: It is all opium poppy in these fields, and Myanmar again ranks as the world’s biggest exporter of the raw material to make heroin and other opiates. And that’s just the beginning. Since descending into a full-blown civil conflict nearly four years ago, after the military overthrew the elected government, Myanmar has cemented its status as a hotbed of transnational crime. It is a playground for warlords, arms dealers, human traffickers, poachers, drug syndicates and generals wanted by international courts. Myanmar is now the biggest nexus of organized crime on the planet, according to the Global Organized Crime Index. The criminality flourishing in Myanmar’s fertile soil carries disastrous consequences for its 55 million people. It is also spreading the fruits of transgression across the globe.
The South China Sea could become a major flashpoint in 2025 (Economist) In early 2024 Taiwan looked like the most dangerous flashpoint in Asia. China, which claims the self-governing island as its own, was frustrated by Lai Ching-te’s victory in a presidential election there in January. It had branded him a “dangerous separatist” who could provoke war. Soon after his inauguration in May, Chinese forces staged two days of naval and air drills around the island, putting military commanders on edge in America, bound as it is, by law, to help Taiwan defend itself. In 2025 the focus of concern may shift southward. In the South China Sea, long-running friction over disputed rocks and reefs has escalated into dramatic clashes at sea. They have mostly occurred between Chinese and Philippine coastguard vessels. But with neither side willing to back down, such encounters could quickly escalate into a naval confrontation that might suck in America, a treaty ally of the Philippines. One place to watch is Sabina Shoal. The outcrop in the Spratly Islands lies 150km west of the Philippine province of Palawan, but is also claimed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan. Second Thomas Shoal, also in the Spratlys, is another possible flashpoint. The outcrops involved may seem too small and remote to be worth risking a broader flare-up. Yet each side has cause to stand firm. The Philippines’ president, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, has pledged to do more than just protest against Chinese encroachment in waters claimed by his country. America is also determined to reinforce its treaty with the Philippines and to stop what it calls Chinese “salami-slicing”—small acts of aggression that make territorial gains. China sees the chance to show America’s allies that they cannot rely on it for help.
Optimism and despair in the Middle East (AP) In Damascus, the streets were buzzing with excitement Tuesday as Syrians welcomed in a new year that seemed to many to bring a promise of a brighter future after the unexpected fall of Bashar Assad’s government weeks earlier. While Syrians in the capital looked forward to a new beginning after the ousting of Assad, the mood was more somber along Beirut’s Mediterranean promenade, where residents shared cautious hopes for the new year, reflecting on a country still reeling from war and ongoing crises. War-weary Palestinians in Gaza who lost their homes and loved ones in 2024 saw little hope that 2025 would bring an end to their suffering. “The year 2024 was one of the worst years for all Palestinian people. It was a year of hunger, displacement, suffering and poverty,” said Nour Abu Obaid, a displaced woman from northern Gaza. In Lebanon, a tenuous ceasefire brought a halt to fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group a little over a month ago. The country battered by years of economic collapse, political instability and a series of calamities since 2019, continues to grapple with uncertainty, but the truce has brought at least a temporary return to normal life. On Beirut’s seaside corniche, Mohammad Mohammad from the village of Marwahin in southern Lebanon was strolling with his three children. “I hope peace and love prevail next year, but it feels like more (challenges) await us,” he said.
Freezing in Gaza (Drop Site News) On the morning of Dec 28th, Yahya Al-Batraan, a 40-year-old father of five sons and three daughters, got up in his dilapidated tent in Deir al-Balah’s western parts near the beach to find his 1-month-old baby, Jomaa, had frozen to death. His twin brother was hospitalized for hypothermia at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and faces a similar fate. Al-Batraan was displaced from Beit Lahia a year ago. His two brothers and many of his relatives were killed before his eyes. His house was razed to the ground after Israeli troops invaded and annihilated the camp. Six people have frozen to death in Gaza during the past week, where the temperatures have reached the low 40s in Fahrenheit—or about 8 degrees Celsius; five were infants less than a month old. Al-Batraan’s newborn baby will not be the last to die from hypothermia as conditions continue to deteriorate in the besieged territory. “My wife and I got up in the morning. We checked the children as always. But my 1-month-old twin didn’t show any vital signs at all. When I touched him, his body was like a bottle of ice. I took him and rushed to the hospital on foot because I didn’t have the money for a taxi or even an animal-drawn cart. Doctors instantly told me that he passed away. I couldn’t hold my senses and burst into tears. Just moments later, my wife rang me to inform me that the other twin wasn’t breathing. … The hardest thing someone can ever endure is to see their children dying in front of them. There are no words to describe this feeling. My message to the world is that we’ve lost our dignity and everything. We need warmth and peace. Someone has to stop this genocide.”
U.S. Strikes Militant Group in Yemen That Has Kept Up Attacks on Ships (NYT) The U.S. military said on Tuesday that it had carried out a series of strikes on the Houthis, the Iranian-backed group in Yemen, as the group suggested it would continue attacking Israel and ships in the Red Sea if there was no cease-fire in Gaza. It was not immediately clear whether the strikes would be a setback for the Houthis, who have remained undeterred even as they have come under attack from the United States and Israel.

Car Tyre Suppliers Uncovered: What You Need to Know Before Buying
Tumblr media
When it comes to maintaining your vehicle's performance and safety, the importance of quality tyres cannot be overstated. If you're in or around Galashiels, finding the right car tyre suppliers can be a crucial step in ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience. This blog aims to guide you through the essentials of choosing the right car tyre suppliers in Galashiels, what to look for, and why quality matters.
Why the Right Tyres Matter
Tyres are the sole component of your vehicle that directly interacts with the road surface. They influence various aspects, including fuel efficiency, braking capabilities, and the overall handling and comfort of the ride. Poor-quality or worn-out tyres can lead to compromised safety, increased running costs, and even fines if they don't meet legal standards.
Choosing the right tyres is not just about finding the cheapest option but investing in long-term performance and safety.
Qualities of a Reliable Car Tyre Supplier
1. Variety of Tyres
A dependable car tyre supplier in Galashiels will offer a wide selection of tyres to suit different vehicles, driving needs, and budgets. From summer and winter tyres to all-season options, variety ensures that you find exactly what you need.
2. Expert Guidance
Navigating the technical details of tyres—such as tread depth, load index, and speed rating—can be daunting. Seek out suppliers that offer experienced personnel who can assist you in navigating the selection process.
3. Affordable Pricing
While quality often comes at a price, a good supplier will strike a balance between affordability and reliability. Look out for competitive pricing and occasional promotions that offer good value without compromising on safety.
4. Installation Services
The convenience of purchasing tyres and having them professionally installed in one place is a major plus. Many car tyre suppliers in Galashiels offer installation and balancing services to ensure your tyres perform optimally.
5. After-Sales Support
Look for suppliers that offer warranties, maintenance advice, and support in case of any issues post-purchase. These services showcase their dedication to ensuring customer satisfaction.
Key Factors to Consider Before Buying Tyres
Before you make a purchase, it's important to assess several factors:
1. Your Driving Habits
Do you primarily drive on highways, city roads, or rough terrains? Knowing your typical driving conditions can help you choose tyres with the right tread pattern and durability.
2. Seasonal Needs
Galashiels experiences varied weather conditions, making it essential to choose tyres suited for the season. Winter tyres provide better grip in icy conditions, while summer tyres are designed for dry and wet roads in warmer weather.
3. Tyre Size
Your vehicle's manual will specify the correct tyre size. Ensure the supplier has tyres that fit these specifications, as using the wrong size can affect vehicle performance.
4. Tyre Longevity
Durability is a key consideration, especially if you clock a lot of miles. Check the estimated lifespan of the tyres and ensure they meet your expectations for value.
5. Safety Ratings
Look for tyres with high safety ratings and certifications. These ratings are a good indicator of performance in various conditions, such as wet roads or at high speeds.
Benefits of Local Car Tyre Suppliers in Galashiels
Choosing a local supplier has several advantages. They are familiar with the driving conditions in and around Galashiels, allowing them to recommend the most suitable options for the area. Additionally, local suppliers often offer personalized service and quick turnaround times, making the buying and installation process seamless.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Overlooking Maintenance
Even the best tyres require regular maintenance, such as checking air pressure and rotating tyres. Neglecting this can shorten their lifespan and compromise performance.
2. Choosing Based Solely on Price
Although affordability is a significant consideration, it should not be the only factor influencing the decision. Cheap tyres may save you money upfront but could lead to higher long-term costs due to frequent replacements or reduced fuel efficiency.
3. Ignoring Compatibility
Always double-check that the tyres are compatible with your vehicle's specifications. Using the wrong tyres can lead to safety issues and potential damage.
The Buying Process: What to Expect
When you visit car tyre suppliers in Galashiels, here's what the process typically looks like:
Consultation: Share your driving needs and budget with the supplier.
Recommendation: Based on your input, the supplier will recommend tyres that fit your requirements.
Inspection: The supplier may inspect your current tyres to assess wear and suggest replacements.
Purchase: Once you’ve selected the tyres, you’ll proceed with the purchase.
Installation: If the supplier offers this service, they will mount and balance the tyres for optimal performance.
Why Galashiels Is a Great Location for Tyre Shopping
Galashiels is home to some reputable tyre suppliers that cater to diverse driving needs. With its proximity to scenic routes and varied terrains, having reliable tyres is essential for safe and enjoyable driving. Whether you're commuting to work or exploring the countryside, local suppliers ensure you have the right tyres for the journey.
Conclusion
Choosing the right car tyre suppliers in Galashiels is a vital step in maintaining your vehicle’s safety and performance. By prioritizing quality, expert guidance, and after-sales support, you can make an informed decision that benefits you in the long run. The Impact of Air Pollution on Lung Cancer Risk: What You Can Do to Protect Yourself
Tumblr media
Air pollution is an increasingly urgent health concern worldwide, affecting millions of people each day. Its impact on respiratory health is widely recognized, but fewer people are aware of the link between air pollution and lung cancer. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to polluted air is a significant risk factor for lung cancer, even in non-smokers. Understanding this connection and taking steps to reduce exposure to pollutants can help protect your health. Our experts at BCI- Blood and Cancer Institute, considered as the best lung cancer specialists in Surat, have put together a guide about air pollution, its impact on lung cancer risk, and how you can mitigate the risks.
1. Understanding the Link Between Air Pollution and Lung Cancer
Air pollution is a complex mixture of harmful particles and gasses, including particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants come from various sources, such as vehicle emissions, industrial processes, construction sites, and natural events like wildfires. Particulate matter, particularly the fine particles known as PM2.5, is especially concerning. These tiny particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation and damage to lung tissue over time.
Research has shown that long-term exposure to high levels of air pollution increases the risk of developing lung cancer. In 2013, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified outdoor air pollution as a carcinogen, stating that it poses a clear risk to respiratory health. Studies have linked chronic exposure to PM2.5, especially in urban areas, with an increased risk of lung cancer, even among those who have never smoked. While the risk is higher for smokers, the fact that air pollution alone can lead to cancer highlights the serious health threat posed by poor air quality.
2. Who Is Most at Risk?
Our Cancer specialists in Surat at BCI- Blood and Cancer Institute, say that anyone living in an area with high levels of air pollution is at risk, but some groups are particularly vulnerable:
● Urban Residents: Those living in cities face higher levels of pollution due to vehicle emissions, construction, and industrial activity.
● Older Adults and Children: Children’s developing lungs and older adults’ reduced immune function make them more susceptible to the effects of pollution.
● People with Pre-existing Conditions: Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), may experience more severe impacts from pollution exposure.
While we may not be able to fully avoid air pollution, understanding who is most at risk can guide preventive actions and encourage communities to advocate for cleaner air.
3. Practical Steps to Protect Yourself from Air Pollution
Although avoiding air pollution entirely may be unrealistic, there are ways to limit your exposure and reduce the potential health risks:
Monitor Air Quality
● Check Local Air Quality Reports: Many weather apps and websites offer real-time air quality index (AQI) updates, which measure pollution levels in specific areas. Aim to limit outdoor activities when air quality is poor, especially if you belong to a high-risk group.
● Avoid High-Traffic Areas: If possible, avoid walking, biking, or exercising near busy roads or highways where air pollution levels tend to be higher.
Improve Indoor Air Quality
● Use Air Purifiers: High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers can help remove pollutants from indoor air, especially in rooms where you spend most of your time, like bedrooms and living areas.
● Ventilate Your Home: Cancer specialists in Surat from BCI, considered as one of the best cancer hospitals in Surat, advice ventilating your home. Indoor pollutants from cooking, household chemicals, and more can also accumulate. Keep windows open when air quality outside is good to allow fresh air in and let pollutants out.
● Limit Indoor Pollutant Sources: Avoid smoking indoors, and be cautious with the use of household cleaners, paints, and other products that release VOCs.
Adopt Healthy Lifestyle Habits
● Maintain a Healthy Diet: A diet rich in antioxidants, like those found in fruits and vegetables, can help counteract the oxidative damage caused by pollution.
● Exercise Indoors on High Pollution Days: Exercise is essential for lung health, but when air quality is poor, opt for indoor workouts to limit exposure to outdoor pollutants.
● Avoid Smoking: If you are a smoker, quitting can significantly reduce your risk of lung cancer, especially when combined with pollution reduction efforts.
4. Advocating for Cleaner Air
Individual actions are essential, but large-scale changes are necessary to effectively address air pollution and its health impacts. Doctors giving cancer treatment in Surat suggest supporting local and global efforts to reduce emissions and improve air quality to create lasting change. Here’s how you can help:
● Support Clean Energy Initiatives: Transitioning to renewable energy sources reduces pollution from fossil fuels. Encourage and support policies and companies that promote clean energy.
● Raise Awareness: Educating your community about the health risks associated with air pollution can inspire collective action.
● Participate in Community Efforts: Joining local groups focused on environmental health can amplify your voice and contribute to community-led change.
Final Thoughts
Air pollution is a pervasive problem that increases the risk of lung cancer and other health issues, making it crucial to be proactive in reducing exposure. By monitoring air quality, improving indoor air, and supporting clean air initiatives, you can protect yourself and contribute to a healthier, cleaner environment. Every step counts — both for individual health and the well-being of future generations.

Delhi’s Air Is Like Smoking 49 Cigarettes a Day
Tumblr media
Delhi, India’s capital, is grappling with an unprecedented air quality crisis. On November 18, 2024, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to a staggering 978, a level considered hazardous for all. This pollution is equivalent to smoking 49 cigarettes daily, posing significant health risks to millions of residents. The crisis has worsened since late October, driven by a combination of factors including firecrackers, vehicular emissions, industrial pollutants, and stubble burning from neighboring states.
Causes of the Pollution Crisis
Several factors contribute to Delhi’s deteriorating air quality:
Firecrackers: Despite regulations, firecracker use during festivals like Diwali continues to be widespread, adding large amounts of particulate matter to the air.
Vehicular Emissions: With millions of vehicles on the road, emissions from cars, trucks, and buses contribute significantly to the city’s pollution levels, particularly during the winter when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants.
Industrial Pollution: Factories and industries around Delhi are major contributors to the pollution problem, releasing harmful gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere.
Stubble Burning: The seasonal practice of burning crop residue in nearby states like Punjab and Haryana exacerbates the crisis, with smoke from these fires drifting into Delhi.
Health Impacts
The hazardous AQI levels are a serious threat to public health. Exposure to high levels of pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM2.5), can lead to respiratory issues, heart conditions, and premature death. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing conditions, are at particular risk.
Hospitals in the city have seen an increase in patients with respiratory and cardiovascular problems. The dense smog also leads to poor visibility and road accidents, further endangering lives.
Government Response and Criticism
The Supreme Court has stepped in, criticizing the Delhi government for delays in implementing Stage-IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). GRAP is a set of anti-pollution measures introduced to address rising pollution levels through a phased approach, depending on the AQI. Stage-IV, the most stringent level, involves shutting down construction activities, banning polluting industries, and halting the entry of non-essential vehicles into the city. However, delays in enforcement have exacerbated the crisis. The Court has mandated that no relaxation in GRAP measures will be allowed, even if AQI levels fall slightly below the hazardous threshold.
The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) helps control air pollution in Delhi-NCR by taking specific actions based on the Air Quality Index (AQI). It has four stages:
1. Stage I – Poor (AQI: 201–300)
Control dust from construction.
Ban firecrackers.
Sprinkle water to reduce dust.
2. Stage II – Very Poor (AQI: 301–400)
Stop diesel generators (except for emergencies).
Clean roads more often.
Encourage public transport and carpooling.
3. Stage III – Severe (AQI: 401–450)
Stop construction (except critical projects like hospitals).
Ban polluting industries like brick kilns.
Use odd-even rules for cars.
4. Stage IV – Emergency (AQI: 450+)
Ban trucks (except essentials).
Shut schools and non-essential industries.
Stop private vehicles except CNG, electric, or emergency ones.
.
Solutions to Delhi’s Air Pollution Crisis
While immediate steps are essential, long-term solutions are critical to ensuring Delhi does not face recurring air quality emergencies. Some actionable measures include:
Transition to Cleaner Energy Sources: Promoting the use of renewable energy and phasing out coal-based power plants will significantly reduce industrial emissions.
Stricter Vehicle Emission Norms: Expanding the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and enforcing stricter emissions standards can help curb pollution from transportation.
Better Public Transport Infrastructure: Strengthening Delhi’s public transportation system can reduce dependency on private vehicles, easing traffic congestion and lowering emissions.
Addressing Stubble Burning: Providing farmers with affordable alternatives, such as subsidies for machinery to process crop residue, can help reduce the practice of burning stubble.
Urban Greening Initiatives: Planting more trees and creating green belts can help absorb pollutants and improve air quality in urban areas.
Regulation of Firecracker Use: Enforcing strict bans on firecrackers and promoting eco-friendly celebrations during festivals can significantly reduce particulate pollution.
Improved Waste Management: Proper disposal and recycling of waste can prevent the open burning of garbage, a significant source of toxic emissions.
Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring: Expanding the air quality monitoring network will provide accurate data for authorities to implement responsive measures.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating citizens about sustainable practices and the health impacts of pollution can encourage individual action, such as carpooling, using public transport, or reducing energy consumption.
Collaboration Between States: Coordination between Delhi and neighboring states is essential to implement region-wide policies for reducing industrial, agricultural, and vehicular emissions

Fed hints slower cuts, Wall Street cautious ahead of NFP
US stocks ended lower on Thursday, handing back some of the previous session's record gains as investors digested more corporate earnings and awaited Friday’s November jobs data.
Non-farm payrolls are expected to have increased by just over 200,000 jobs last month, after rising by 12,000 in October, the lowest number since December 2020.
On Thursday, the latest US initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 224,000 for the week ended November 30, just above the forecast 215,000 claims.
The key jobs data will set the scene for the Federal Reserve’s final Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) policy meeting decision of 2024, due on December 18, when the US central bank is widely expected to sanction another 25-basis point cut in US interest rates.
However, recent remarks from Fed officials have raised the likelihood that the FOMC might slow the pace of rate cuts sooner than previously expected, possibly as early as the December or January meetings.
In speech on Wednesday, Fed chair Jerome Powell highlighted progress towards bringing down inflation, which some thought could indicate support for a slower pace of rate cuts in 2025.
