How is this dog around strangers?: Finder stated when she approached Mighty he was scared and had his tail tucked between legs but let her pet and hold him. Date of Intake: 7/6/2018 Upon intake, Mighty had a tense body and his tail was tucked between his legs. He allowed me to collar him, take a photo and pick him up and place him into a kennel. Mighty appears to be blind. Mighty is at risk for medical issues. He is a geriatric dog with cataracts/blindness in both eyes. We feel that an adoption would be best for Mighty so he can thrive outside the care center environment. Mighty should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace and therefore we recommend a home with dog ownership experience and no small children. Behavior Assessment:: Date of assessment:: 7/8/2018 Look:: 2. Dog's eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag:: 1. Dog stands with tail low and wagging, and comes toward the Assessor in a friendly manner when the Assessor ceases moving. Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away. Summary:: Mighty did not approach the assessor but allowed the assessor to approach him. He was tense and trembling during his assessment but allowed all handling. Playgroup:: Summary (1):: 7/8: Mighty allows other small dogs to greet him but mostly keeps to himself. Summary (2):: 7/9-12: Mighty wanders the yard mostly keeping to himself. DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: Estimated 10-15 years old Microchip noted on Intake? Underweight BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Mighty may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: : Fearful Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Mighty is a fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Mighty the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mighty should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mighty’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mighty would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. https://newhope.shelterbuddy.com/Animal/Profile/Index/5d713c43-674d-4c39-90f2-d9dae1581cc1 ...
