Returning to "Keith and the Girl"

Say hi to fosters#53-57, who we fostered October 9-18, 2007: Brolo, Chemda, Keith, Khalili and Patrice. (They were named after people on the podcast Keith and the Girl ("the Girl" being Chemda, and "Khalili" being her surname. Brolo is the nickname for Brother Love, a frequent guest on the podcast, and Patrice, their then "gossip girl.") (I still listen to Keith and the Girl all these years later.) ⁠ ..⁠ The kittens came from a farm in Tennessee – there were several moms left at the farm, and most of the other kittens (I’m not sure how many) either died or were killed by other animals. The foster mom ended up keeping the moms & a local rescue had them spayed. Keith and Brolo were from the same litter, and Patrice, Khalili and Chemda (all girls) were all singletons. I don't know - or at least, don't remember - if any of them were adopted together, but they were all adopted out pretty quickly from Petsmart. Day 195 of Project Portrait, next up we have Chemda Hennessy, a podcaster living in Long Island City in New York. Chemda's story is about the difficulties of being a third culture kid: a child born to parents raised in separate countries, who in turn, choose to raise their children in another. Chemda's father was born and raised in Iran, her mother Iraq, Chemda and her brothers meanwhile, grew up in Queens. Like so many others, this mix can lead to tension. As Chemda grew up in the progressive, egalitarian culture of America, her parents were always trying to remind her of the more traditional culture she came from. "I was raised differently from my brothers. I was very quiet as a kid. Was not asked to speak." Chemda was reminded that her goals should be marriage and children, not personal growth and ambition. She watched while her brothers were encouraged to spread their wings, while watching hers be clipped. But while she felt oppressed by family life, she felt elevated by living in the city. "I was able to find people who weren't raised like me but had a similar story. People who were rejected and/or rejecting their past and embracing a life that they are creating." Eventually Chemda managed to break free from home. But it came at a price. Rejecting the culture that ruled her parents, was in effect, Chemda rejecting her parents. It was a hard decision to make. But she found her way. Today she embraces the city that set her free, by finding people with stories to tell and recording them for her funny, irreverent podcast, Keith and the Girl. So for this portrait I wanted to show Chemda, immersed in the city that she loves, surrounded by objects and ideas that have helped her find her voice in a city with thousands.

Eastman Kodak Co.’s wild stock-market ride produced what might be the biggest contribution on record to a religious nonprofit, the product of a well-timed gift by Kodak board member George Karfunkel.

In a securities filing last week, Mr. Karfunkel and his wife, Renee Karfunkel, said they donated 3 million of their 6.3 million Kodak shares to Congregation Chemdas Yisroel in Brooklyn, N.Y.
