As a follow-up to one of your last asks about protagonists… what are some of your fave protagonists in recent media? And some of your most disliked? And why?

Hmmm.

Favorites: Ruby Rose from RWBY, Gon Freecs from HxH, Atsushi from BSD, Wei Wuxian from MDZS, Xie Lian from TGCF, Ash Lynx from Banana Fish, Eren Jaeger from SnK, and Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel stand out.

I think all of these characters are very well rounded and work very well within their respective stories and their genres. They tend to have arcs that exemplify the main themes of the story, but do so in a human way that avoids us feeling like we're being bombarded by a preacher who is held to a different standard than the rest of the cast. They are a vehicle for the story, inextricable from it to a degree, yet well-rounded. The story doesn't exist to serve them.

They are all vastly different characters, too. Eren is a tragic hero who falls in a satisfying way; you don't root for him to win unless you're a fascist. Wei Wuxian and Xie Lian are very flawed but very human characters (ironic because Xie Lian is literally a god) who contain paradoxical traits of immense compassion and immense, destructive flaws. Ash is also tragic, and even though he is "super" in a lot of ways--above average IQ, good looks, athletic, etc--the narrative doesn't give him a pass for these. If anything, it punishes Ash for these traits.

Ruby and Charlie I think are somewhat similar: they're idealistic characters who embody the main messages of their stories, of hope and second chances and love for humanity. Charlie is literally a Jesus figure. Yet, their good intentions are also very flawed at times. Both Charlie and Ruby are hurting children, too, who seek to save themselves through others... but need saving themselves by others. They need to realize their power and their weakness is in being human.

Protagonists I don't like... well, Deku from BNHA. Never liked him, now completely loathe him, but I'm not going to retread why here. I also don't like Alina from Grishaverse and her very "not like the other girls" attitude.

But my number one most hated protagonist is Callum from The Dragon Prince. To be fair, TDP is honestly one of the worst stories ever put to screen. It's a failure of writing on every single level--thematically, character-wise, plot-wise. It's boring and it's offensive all at once. It is everything YouTube dudebros like to complain shows like RWBY are (forced representation that serves nothing beyond "look at us we're woke!" that cheapens the portrayal and is ultimately a disservice and borderline offensive to the social movements they're supposedly offering rep for).

And Callum is the worst of all of the characters. Which is saying a lot because I absolutely despise pretty much every character except Claudia at this point. The narrative has no idea what it wants to do with Callum. He's just kind of there, and they're aware of that and sometimes try to reference that on a meta level, but can't because they keep throwing things at him to try to give him an actual role in the story that he simply does not have.

Granted, the narrative itself has no aim. The story is clearly written as a reactionary story that aims to please fans. I saw people shocked Rayla and Callum were only paired together because of fans (which the writers admitted). Like, no shit? The story is written reactively rather than because it has anything interesting to say. It has nothing at all to say, and Callum embodies this.

The story itself is at the level of a middle-schooler's writing project that would earn a C in 8th grade. Callum is a blank space for a middle schooler who wants to create a cool story but doesn't know what to write. And see, if the narrative actually said "oh, he doesn't know what to write, let's explore that and show him struggling and failing" it'd be interesting. But no. The narrative bends over to cater to him and everything he wants instead.

Which is why I'd give the hypothetical 8th grader writing this a C. You have an interesting world and potential in your characters. You just haven't figured out how to wield it yet. Except then I remember that this is actually a multi-million dollar, seven season long Netflix series greenlit based solely on the fact that the very-much-adult producer was involved in ATLA. Then, I think of all the amazing stories that will never be greenlit or that were cancelled after one season, and I slap a red F on it and drop-kick Callum into a trash bin.

the show deals with in-between death space and the fixing of your life's regrets in the 4 minutes it takes for the brain to shut down AND differing perspectives of the same thing + how different people wish their interacting lives could have gone-- suuuper good series imo

Hey everyone! Wanted to let you all know I am currently in the process of writing the 2nd part of Long Lost Morningstar. It's taking a bit longer than I wanted - I'm currently trying to fight off a cold and just got my monthly visitor (yaaayy), so my motivation and energy has been scarce. But don't worry, part 2 will be coming out within the next week (not even hw will get in my way 😡). This one will be longer than the last, but I promise it will be worth the wait. Thank you to everyone who liked and enjoyed the first part and I hope you'll bare with me during this journey.

Oh! Before I go. I have one more thing to announce. I recently got a another idea for a hazbin mini series. This one will be a crossover of Hazbin and BNHA, where Lucifer left seraphim! Reader (his first wife) for Lilith and didn't believe reader when she said she was pregnant. After Lucifer and Lilith were banished to Hell, (Y/N) was forced to raise her their daughter alone. Years later their daughter would be given a task to minimize or balance out evil spreading in humanity by pretending to be human and attending UA as a hero-in-training. She, of course, knows about Lucifer and Hayes him for abandoning her mother and her and eventually is forced to rub elbows with her half-sister Charlie when she comes to pitch her hotel to Heaven. There's more I want to say about this, but I don't wanna give out too many spoilers.

Before The Show Starts/Before Attending UA-

Alex was only the age of 3 years old when she and her 8 year old younger older brother Evan witnessed as their older sister was offered an ice cream from Circus Baby. The both gasped/yelped as they ran away from the doorway in fear. Tear were falling from their eyes. Evan was holding Alex’s hand to make sure she doesn’t fall to far behind him. “Daddy!!!” Alex cried. She clung into her fathers leg as soon as they reached him.

“What happened?” William asked, trying to understand his child’s distress. Evan tried to explain what they saw through his sobs. William understood what he was saying, and sent his two youngest to the next room where his oldest was.

After that, no one would talk about what happened to Elizabeth. William wouldn’t tell anyone the truth of what happened, and found a way to write it off as some natural cause or something. No one believed the two little kids. They were just young and had wild imagination, and didn’t know how else to explain their older sister being gone, at least that what everyone thought. William give Evan a Fredbear plushie, and Alex a Spring Bonnie plushie, to try and comfort them. It did help, but also didn’t at the same time. The two were both scared of the animatronics in their fathers dinner, Fredbears Family Dinner, Evan more than Alex though. Alex was more confused, and didn’t know how to feel. Alex had been interested in the animatronics and alway asked her dad about them, then a new one killed her sister.

Just under a year later, Evan’s 9th birthday was quickly approaching. During this time, William and his wife Clara’s relationship was falling apart more than it kinda already was before. Clara hadn’t ever been the best mom, other than to Elizabeth, her favorite child. She was honestly neglectful and down right hateful towards her none ginger children. By this point William and his business partner Henry Emily, opened the first Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Speaking of Henry, his daughter Charlie just died, three weeks before Evan’s birthday. As much as Evan didn’t want to have his birthday around the scary animatronics, his party was at Fredbears. Alex stuck by his side the whole time. They mostly hide under a table together. Evan was crying and Alex was clinging to him. Their older brother, Michael, kept teasing and making fun of Evan for being a crybaby. He was always teasing him, but didn’t do the same to Alex. Alex kept huffily getting Mike to get to leave them alone for a time. Everything was mostly normal until…

Grumble… Alex looked down at her stomach. She was hungry, and thirsty. “I be wight back Evey,” she said, sitting up. She held her Spring Bonnie plush to her chest tightly.

“Be careful!” Evan said with worry. He didn’t want her to get to close to the animatronics. Alex nodded before leaving the safety of under the table. She ran over to the smoothie bar to get her and Evan a drink. She snaked on a piece of pizza while she was waiting. As she was handed the two smoothies, she heard noise from across the room. She turned, stuffie tucked under her arm, smoothie in each hand. She saw as Michael and his friends dragged Evan away from the table hiding spot. She rushed that way, trying not to spill the two drinks.

“Mikey weave him awone!” Alex scolded with her squeaky 4 year old voice. Her oldest brother didn’t listen to her. As she got closer, she set the two smoothies on a nearby table and ran over. One of Michels friends grabbed her to hold her back as she shouted at her brother. “Stop it Mikey! It’s not funny! Weave him awone!” She tried talk sense into the 14 year old, but it was too late. Micheal put Evan’s head into the mouth of the yellow/golden colored bear springlock animatronic. Snap! Crunch! Because of Evan’s crying and trembling, the spring locks malfunctioned, snapping shut on his head. The laughter of the teenage bullies instantly stopped. Alex gasped, wiggling her way out of the one guys grasp. She ran up to Micheal, who was cradling Evan in his arms. She started sobbing as she saw Evan’s bloody head. She turned and ran towards where she knew her father was. “Daddy!!”

Evan was brought to a hospital for his injuries, eventually getting brought home for his last days. He was in a coma for about a week before he died. After Evan’s death, William and Clara’s arguing became even worse. They would have screaming arguments every night. One night, Alex woke up from a nightmare, and could hear her parents arguing in the other room. She was crying a little from her dream. She got out of bed, pecked out of her room, and ran into Michael's bedroom. He looked over at the noise of his door, and turned on his bedside lap. He had just been staring at the ceiling unable to sleep. “Alex?” He yawned slightly.

“C-can I sleep w-with you?” Alex sniffled and hiccuped. Mike nodded and she ran over jumping onto his bed. She snuggled into him and he held her close. He knew that everything was a lot for the 4 year old. It was a lot for him, and he was 10 years old than her. He was actually slightly surprised that she can to her for comfort after what he had done. But he understood. He could also hear their parents yelling.

“I want a divorce!” William blurted.

“So do I!!” Clara slammed closed the front door as she walked out of the house. She got in to her car and speed off. The following day a police man came to the house and informed William that his wife had been in a car accident. Just like that the Afton family was half the size it had been a year before. Elizabeth, Evan, and Clara were dead, leave just William, Micheal, and Alex.

After everything, William delved into his work more. He was becoming withdrawn and colder to the world outside his family. Mike, on the other hand, stepped up. He stopped with his bully attitude after his prank gone wrong. He didn’t want to lease another sibling, so he cared for Alex as if both of their lives depended on it. Which honestly it might have. Who know what might have happened if Alex wasn’t being supervised by the helicopter parent her brother was acting like. William, after some grieving time, also kinda also became a helicopter parent. He did have some resentment towards Mike, but did realize that his elder son didn’t mean to kill his younger son. Since Mike was older, William put more into keeping Alex safe. He’d keep her with him while working on animatronics, teaching her the basics. She actually found it interesting.

By the time of middle school Alex was dying her hair blonde and using her mothers maiden name Schmidt. Because of all the news involving her family and the Fazbear brand, she was getting bullied and excluded by her peers. You know the whole missing children stuff. So her family moved, and she went to a different middle school from the rest of her elementary school classmates. Which made it the perfect time to somewhat change who she was. She was still kinda excluded because she was socially awkward and didn’t know how to make friends. Her family was a bunch of loners.

Actually it was her and Michael who moved because William kinda went missing/‘died’ at this point. They didn’t move that far, but far enough to be away to not constantly run into people that knew them/their family. They actually moved in with their godfathers (Aizawa).

After about a year or so Michael moved out going back closer to where they used to live, but was still close enough by. He actually got a security job of some kind back home. That’s all he told Alex at the time. However, by the time she was going to start high school, and start at UA (in on recommendation), she learned more about what Michael had been doing. He couldn’t really hide the fact that he was basically a walking corpse. He had purple skin.

Other stuff I wasn’t sure where to fit in-

1: She started doing the secret hero work in middle school. She witnessed a crime thing, where innocent people were going to be hurt. Technically, she wasn’t supposed to do anything, but she didn’t want to just sit back and let it happen. So, she pulled her hood up to cover her face, and used her spatial manipulation to get close and get the innocent people out before anything could happen.

2: The kids William killed were (mostly) kids that were mean to Alex

3: She’s not against a poly relationship but has never publicly identify as poly like she has identified with she/they pronouns and as pansexual

4: She first learned card tricks/sleight of hand after Michael did one very simple card trick to mess with her when she was very young and she basically wanted to show him up which she definitely did

5: When it comes to how she wears her ua school uniform, she basically never wears the jacket, but wears a long sleeve under the button shirt. The top button or two are (usually) undone, and the tie is on loose and messily.

6: Fav colors are black, amethyst, and metallic violet
