#catholics fighting in the comment sections about stupid shit that doesn't matter

conclave was a good movie! constantly straddled the line between Catholicism crit and outright Catholic propaganda bc on one hand I think it does a pretty good job of exploring the complexity of the institution but it also insists that the church can change for the better if Catholics simply make good choices when in reality it won't and can't. a lot of this story was based on several levels of fantasy and that does undermine it in places. but idk I don't think that negates how much thought the writers put into the story. they really truly wanted to do something here and even tho I think it fell short in some places they also said everything they wanted to say very well.

however none of that shit I just said matters bc ultimately the thing that elevates this to true art was when they posed the serious and and institution rattling theological question that is "hey what if pope genitals weird 🤔" and then immediately fucking rolled credits. like HARD cut off. absolutely zero attempt to follow up on that one. so you're just left sitting there going woaw you're so right movie what IF pope genitals weird 🤔. that's cinema. that's deep shit.
