First Impressions TV Review: The Expanse Season 5
If youre a fan of science-fiction, you’d be hard pressed to find a show that’s more faithful to the genre than The Expanse. Originally a novel series written by James S. A. Corey, the series is set in the far future where humanity has colonized various parts of the solar system. The series predominantly focuses on three main human factions – the Earthers, the Martians and the Belters. Among the…

I just finished 'The Expanse'
Wow. I've had a weird history with this show.
I heard a couple years ago that it was cool and I like space stuff so I thought I'd give it a try. It did not go well.
Specifically, it didn't go well because as cool as everything was I didn't feel as though I was watching any sympathetic characters. And I've reached an age where I need that in my entertainment.
Why should I care about these people? Their hopes, dreams, fears, losses? Why?
I tried it a second time and it went about as well as the first, and I was lost in the two seemingly conjoined but bizarre mysteries, so I gave up.
Well, I needed something to watch after finishing 'For All Mankind' (I told you I was into space stuff) so I gave it a third shot.
I am so glad I did.
In this viewing I decided to abandon asking the show to convince me why I should watch it and instead approached it with the mindset of what I was witnessing: panicking people trying to survive and taking pot shots at each other as they did. Not a lot of room for love in those situations.
But through the course of the show those intense moments ebb enough for the characters to show you who they are. Now, the intense moments come back and allow you to more clearly understand each character's words, actions, and general choices a little more, but they surprise you sometimes.
There isn't a lot of joy in the show, because it's not a joyful time. But it does happen, as does tenderness, laughter, passion, etc. It's about people, just in very extreme circumstances who have to often think and act very quickly. But they do, and they learn how to lean on one another, and depend on them, and be there for each other.
And, of course, there's my crush for this show.
Well, that's her like 1% of the time.
There she is. Passionate space valkyrie. She knows loyalty and betrayal, love and pain, solid ground and hard vacuum.
But she's not on the crew of the Rocinante.
After watching this series I feel like I'd be at home on that ship, as cold and unforgiving as it is.
Anyway, if you like sci-fi and you haven't watched it yet I'd say give it a try and make it through the first season, I think you'll be glad that you did.
And shit starts getting really weird in season 2.
#the expanse#sci fi#if cara gee somehow sees this post I'm sorry if I'm a little too weird#what I mean to say is that you're fantastic#and I don't know how to handle cas anvar except when I rewatch I'll try to pay him less attention#it sucks that he's that kind of person#now I can't like his character

𝔼𝕝 𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕒ñ𝕠 (2018)
¡Absolutamente!

60 Sec Rec: The Expanse
Hundreds of years in the future, humans have colonized the solar system and Mars has become an independent military power. A missing person links an asteroid belt detective, the captain of an ice freighter and a diplomat trying to avert a war. [Rotten Tomatoes & Netflix]
Detective Miller is in a futuristic-noir, a cop tasked with finding wayward heiress turned political activist Julie Mao.
James Holden and crew are in an action/adventure in space, the everyday guys who go from the frying pan to the fire.
Chrisjen Avasarala, UN Security Council member, is in a political thriller, trying to avoid a war and figure out who she can trust in the government.
A bit of Blade Runner/Total Recall, a bit of Alien, a bit of Battlestar Galactica, as the show progresses these storylines intersect and the genres mix. Characters don't become found family but a forged one; forged in near death experiences, impossible choices, secrets kept and shared, and even some romances (not all requited).
This show can fit SO MANY BLORBOS. Also polyamory! one of the leads has 8 parents, and a recurring character, who is the love of my life, is in a poly relationship later in the show. The actors are fantastic (Tipper has an episode in one of the later seasons that's a tour de force. She's tremendous), and the set design and costumes are gorgeous.
The ship names (I mean actual ships here) are so cool too: Rocinante, Guy Molinari, Scipio Africanus... a nice bit of trivia.
It is so, so, so GOOD. You have to give it some time at the start because you might need a while to 'get settled' in this universe, but don't worry because it's a rich story but not a dense one. It's also not grimdark; bad things do happen, and there are losses and casualties, but it's not a cruel show. It won't laugh at you for caring.
Developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) based on the book series by James S. A. Corey (pseudonym for Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). Written by the novelists and mostly new writers. Directed by Breck Eisner (Fear Itself), Jeff Woolnough (Vikings), Terry McDonough (Better Call Saul)... Starring Thomas Jane, Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Florence Faivre, Shawn Doyle, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Frankie Adams, Cara Gee, Keon Alexander, Jasai Chase Owens, Nadine Nicole, David Strathairn, Jared Harris...

Michael Douglas, tj miller, Jared keto (grooming and borderline minors), aziz ansari, cas anvar, snoop dogg (rolling stones pimping), James Franco, ed westwick, Johnny deep ofc (at least marital abuse), John Marsden (creep but not known illegal behaviours afaik), James marsters(same), John barrowman (groper with men), Luc besson, Bryan singer (men), Ian mckellen(with singer and young men..), fassbender (ex gfs) all that allegedly... You might like agc webpages and fauxmoi
I go on there all the time. Fauxmoi on Reddit. It's the only fucking sub Reddit that hates Johnny Depp. Oh and Deppdelusion is another one.
I'm just so happy to see that more people are starting to see though Depp's bullshit even on Twitter. I mean it sucks that the same people that were leaving gross comments about Amber Heard are now starting to love her a year later. I actually don't know anything about Fassbender.

Also The Expanse for the TV meme?
Favourite character: Camina 'Live shamed and die empty' Drummer 🥰🥰🥰
Funniest character: Hmm..it's not exactly a laugh riot of a show, but I remember thinking Avasarala's bodyguard Cotyar had some good dry humor lines.
Best-looking character: Probably Drummer again, although Avasarala and her outfits get an honorable mention.
3 favourite ships: The Roci, the Razorback, and Medina Station. 😜The Belter polycule, Camina/Naomi...maaaybe Amos/Clarissa? Naomi/Jim are ok and kind of sweet but...eh, kinda boring.
Least favourite character: Oh there was no shortage of odious characters: Inaros, Errinwright, Murtry, Strickland, Gao...honestly it's a toss-up between Strickland and Gao, I think, they were both pretty irredeemable. So was Inaros, of course, but he felt less cold-blooded than the other two.
Least favourite ship: Miller and Julie Mao, if that was a ship, or maybe Alex/Bobbie because Cas Anvar ruined a good character with his bs gdit.
Reason why I watch it: Honestly it might be the best show I've ever watched. I love plenty of light-hearted, fun-but-kinda-silly shows, and sometimes hard drama isn't my favorite, but my god The Expanse is just incredible. Virtually every character is rich, nuanced, human. The diversity is clearly intentional and yet it feels effortless and natural - it just makes sense. There are hard sci-fi elements and yet the story and characters are grounded in very believable and relatable Earthbound issues.
Why I started watching it: Word of mouth and good buzz, I think. The shock events of the pilot had me hooked pretty much immediately.
Thanks so much!
