Prompt #4: Clinch
Fishing Trip
“You’ve got the idea? Now you try.”
Torene gripped the fishing line and hook as Cardre’a showed her, fumbling with getting the end to go through the eye of the hook. “It’s hard.”
“The good captain has done it many times.” Jancis’ voice encouraged from behind them as she prepared the campfire. “It is harder than it looks for me, too.”
The young girl tried it again, fraying the edge. Steady hands came in, with a flick of the fingers, and twisted it back up. “Try again.” This time it worked. “Good, now twist the end of the line around itself.” The keeper miqo’te undid his, slowing going through the motions again as the cord looped around, counting out the revolutions.
Jancis watched the pair, smiling as she got the fire strong enough to start taking to the wood. She joined them by the riverside just in time to have a hook held up joyfully by a pair of small hands.
“Ma! Look! I did it!” Torene’s dark eyes were brighter as Jancis knelt down to inspect the work. “It’s called a clinch knot. It can hold a fish as big as me.” The girl started to go on about everything Cardre’a had said about it, what fish were in the river. “We’re going to catch all of them.”
“Not all.” His humored voice interjected, cracking a grin. “We both try for one. It’s a fair deal, yes?”
“Deal!”

“The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship.”
