Functionality
These mods are not technically in the build but are needed to have mods (syboulette's crossfit and aira's rice cooker specifically) functional.
ZulfAndHakrabr: Let's Get Fits Modpack Ricky: Useable RiceCooker
Vehicles
Technically, the two vehicles used for this build use the the Breeze Motors 2018 Mercedes E-Class Wagon and the 2020 Maserati Quattroporte as their base. I won't link to the download page as its a perma-paywaller and I fundamentally disagree with how Breeze Motors is handling their patreon personally. I will leave it to you to decide if you want their CC and how you acquire it if you choose to do so.
For my personal game, I have edited and stripped down my copies of these two cars and modified them so that they work with Simnation Travel. I have a pinned patreon post that is not paywall locked here explaining that more in depth and include the required files HERE.
If you go that route, and would like to download the cars, you can find them here:
Maserati Quattroporte
Mercedes E-Class
I should note that in addition to lacking the door open /close options of the original as those were stripped down, the textures were redone with simlish for a more maxis match look in game.
Mods for this Build
These are not technically required for the build to function but this build was built using overrides for both Sim Realist's SNB Bills mod as well as Simnation Travel vehicles. You shouldn't get any weird errors if you load the build in without those mods but if there's an exception caught by MCC related to that, it's probably just reconciling that the override the lot was built with is not in place in your game. It should only be a one time alert the first time the game loads in if it happens and should not cause any issue other than MCC making a noise at you about it noticing weirdness.
(The SNB provides the High Speed Internet trait to the lot and I think it will just set that trait to empty if its loaded without but I haven't personally confirmed it, hence the note here. ) Additional Note
I'm pushing this to live today just to make sure it hits my tumblr the same time as I pushed the build to my gallery but I will be going back to add links into the list. There are just a LOT to track down and it might take me a day or two to finish that part.

𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟒𝐓𝐇 , 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 — 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨
SETTING : barlow pass & granite falls . DATE : 12a est october 4th — 11:59pm est tba
before they knew it , a week had flown by and it was time to make the long awaited trip back up the mountain to the heart of where it all began : monte cristo . loading up two cars , one with REEVE , ELIZA , KINGSTON , & ISLA , and the other with THOMAS , CAMILLE , KODY , & MILO — the eight readied themselves for their grand return . group one , naturally , got a head start . . . given as group two was taking their sweet time . considering reeve’s domineering sense of control , paired together with eliza’s type-a personality — they naturally grew impatient . so , a quick text was shot out to let the others know they were going to head out to start the setup , and they’d all reconvene on the mountain later . traveling in smaller groups would allow them to draw less attention , anyway , given that it was the off season in granite falls . in the end — it worked out.
until it didn’t .
that false sense of security would be quickly shattered in a way none of them had prepared for .
a storm — wild , violent , and unforgiving — came . . . striking the separated groups at the worst times .
it hits when GROUP ONE is halfway up the hiking trail to monte cristo ; backpacks , equipment , and supplies encumbering them as they trek the winding path , which grows steeper and steeper with each step . a little bit of rain wouldn’t have hurt to wash away the sweat on their brows ; but a torrential downpour , complimented by roars of thunder and cracks of lightning , forces them to stop and take shelter — FAST . however , whilst trying to find shelter , they realize one of their bags of food supplies has been swept away . on top of that , every time they think they’ve found somewhere to wait out the storm , something happens . a tree branch snaps and lands on their makeshift shelter , a nearby creek floods , some large animal roars disconcertingly close by . safety — survival — is of the upmost importance .
GROUP TWO has their own problems to juggle . thomas’s car , old and decrepit , was likely not the best choice to cart everyone up to granite falls , but it had the most room for all the camera and audio equipment — on top of supplies and four , full-grown adults . things started out rocky when they convinced themselves a car was following them . then , naturally , something happens with the engine ( or the battery , or the exhaust , or . . . okay, multiple things happen ) and the group is forced to pull over . after multiple failed attempts to contact AAA , the group decides to abandon the shoddy vehicle and hike the remaining mile to granite falls . then , the storm strikes them , the surrounding lake overflowing from the rain’s intensity , trapping them by the arrival center . thankfully , there is a motel — but it appears to have been locked up and closed down for the off-season . . . upon closer inspection , it looks fully abandoned , and possibly has been for years . despite their better judgement , they break in .
with no way to contact one another due to horrendous service atop the mountain and , now , factoring in a violent storm — the groups can only hope the others are doing okay , but there is no way to know .
and no way to predict just how long this storm will go on for .
all they can do is wait .

hi hello 12 from the ship dialogue for Madeleine and Morgan 🥺 (@ do-this-for-me)
Thank you so much @do-this-for-me for the prompt and the soft m feels that went with it!! <33
12. your hugs are nice
Fandom: The Wayhaven Chronicles Pairing: f!detective (Madeleine Kingston) x Morgan Word count: ~1.4k prompt list here
Where the hell is she?
When they got back from patrol, Morgan directly headed to Madeleine’s room, fully expecting to find her in bed, reading. After knocking a couple times, and getting no answer, she fished her phone out of her pocket and checked the time. It was barely past 10pm and Maddie usually isn’t sleeping yet by then.
The thought had then crossed her mind that she may have gotten a migraine and gone to sleep a little earlier so, quietly, she entered Maddie’s room. Just to make sure that she was okay and that she had everything she needed, but if she was already asleep, she wouldn’t disturb her. She walked to her bed, the soft glow of her phone lighting the room, although she didn’t need it. But all she saw was Madeleine’s empty bed.
She rushed out of the room and headed for the kitchen. Maybe she was hungry and decided to grab some snacks, but to her utmost disappointment, Nat was the only one there. She was out the door before Nat could even say anything. She turned back and took a couple turns to get to the living room, where she only found Farah, throwing a mischievous glance her way as soon as she stepped into the room. She hustled past Ava on her way to the library, which she found out was dark and empty. No Maddie.
So now, she’s pacing up and down the hallway, racking her brain on Maddie’s possible whereabouts. Her battered car is parked outside so she’s bound to be in the warehouse. These are the three places where Maddie spends most of her time when she’s visiting and, after ruling out the Roof because it’s pouring outside, Morgan is starting to run out of ideas.
The sewing room!
A few weeks ago, Madeleine asked if it’d be possible to set up a sewing room for her at the warehouse, in case she had to be put on house arrest again. So, these past few days, they’ve been working on furnishing one of the many empty rooms for her.
Morgan is about to rush over there when her whole body quivers, making her stop in her tracks. As she looks down at herself to realize that she’s still wearing her drenched clothes, she suddenly becomes very aware of the fact that she’s freezing and that she’s probably covered in goosebump under the clothes sticking to her skin. The realization only making her shiver some more.
She eyes the end of the corridor on her left, the one leading to the sewing room, leading to Madeleine, and then her eyes fall on the corridor facing her, where the promise of a warm shower awaits her. As her heart sways between both options, her teeth start chattering, settling the decision for her: she needs to change.
But she doesn’t make it past her doorway.
“You’re here…”
Her voice is barely more than a whisper, yet it’s enough to make the girl tucked up in her bed, glance up at her. With her back resting on the headboard, a plaid thrown over her shoulders and the duvet pulled up to her chest, Madeleine is reading in the exact same position Morgan pictured her in earlier, except that she’s in her bed.
“I was looking for you”, she wants to tell her, but the words get stuck in her throat. Whether it’s because she’s embarrassed to admit it or because her chattering teeth make it hard to speak, Morgan doesn’t know.
As she steps further into the room, Maddie closes her book, slipping a bookmark in-between the pages, focusing her attention on Morgan. She gives her that smile that brings out her dimples and lights up the whole room. If it was any brighter Morgan would have to look away.
“So…my bed, huh?” The vampire wants her tone teasing, but all she manages in that moment is confusion. Maddie laughs and a wave of warmth washes over her. She’s not cold anymore, or at least that’s what she thought before a shiver makes her whole body visibly shake.
“Want to join me?” Maddie asks, patting the bed.
Morgan is already peeling off her wet clothes. “Thought you’d never ask.” She discards her jeans and top into a puddle on the floor and joins Madeleine under the sheets.
She clenches her teeth when the cold fabric rubs against her skin, but the feeling doesn’t last as she scouts closer to Maddie, her head instantly finding her place in the crook of her neck. Madeleine lets out a gasp.
“You’re cold!” She states the obvious as she rolls out of the vampire’s grasp.
“And you’re warm, come back here!” Morgan says, pulling her back into her arms.
Maddie doesn’t try to get away this time and even brings the vampire a little closer to her, shifting a little so that their bodies fit perfectly together, like two pieces of a puzzle. She brushes away the strands of hair that stick to Morgan’s cheek, her fingers lingering a moment too long. Morgan catches her hand before she can take it away. Pressing a kiss in the palm of her hand, she watches as Madeleine turns that bright shade of pink she’s started to grow very fond of.
“So, how come you’re in my bed? Not that I mind, you’re welcome in my bed anytime, sweetheart…”
Madeleine chuckles a little at the innuendo. “Couldn’t sleep.”
She doesn’t need to explain why she couldn’t find sleep, it’s pretty obvious in the way her hand rests on her stomach, in the thin layer of sweat that covers her face, or in the pillbox she tried to hide under the pillows when Morgan entered the room.
“I know a great way to tire you enough.” She instantly regrets the words coming out of her mouth as she realizes that the lewd comment is probably not what Maddie needs right now.
“I’m sure you do, but that’s not what I was looking for, tonight.”
There’s a moment of silence as Morgan ponders over the best way to offer her some comfort before she figures that asking is probably the best way to understand what Madeleine needs. “And what exactly were you looking for?”
“You.”
Morgan is rendered speechless by the confession while Maddie, worried that she’s made a fool of herself, hastily adds something that she doesn’t hear. She sees her lips moving, but all she hears is that single word echoing inside her head. She smiles, and before she can catch herself, she’s planting a kiss on Maddie’s lips. A single peck that leaves Madeleine stunned.
But as silence stretches, Morgan starts to worry. Did I do something wrong? Maybe I should have asked before kissing her. But her worrying is cut short as Madeleine cups her cheek before closing the distance between them. Her lips are gentle and soft against hers as Madeleine returns the kiss and when she parts away, Morgan yearns for more.
“So, is that a yes?” Maddie asks, her hand still resting on her cheek.
“Huh?”
Madeleine laughs when she realizes that the vampire didn’t get a single word of her little ramble. “I was asking if I could stay here tonight.”
“Well, since you’re looking really comfy in my bed already-” Morgan takes a couple seconds to feign indecision, as if spending the night with Madeleine wasn’t the exact thing she’s been hoping for all evening. “I guess you could stay, sweetheart…”
Pulling her back into her arms, Maddie whispers: “Thank you.”
Morgan kisses her collarbone in answer and quiet settles back between them.
They stay like this for a while: Morgan’s hands playing with the fabric of Maddie’s nightgown, her lips brushing against her skin anytime she breathes. Madeleine’s fingers tracing the freckles on her face and neck, peppering soft kisses on her forehead when she thinks Morgan is asleep.
The quiet is filled with Madeleine’s presence and Morgan basks in it.
She revels in the soft thrumming of Maddie’s heartbeat against her ear and the warmth of her body against hers. She relishes in the sweet scent of oats lingering on her skin and the soft sound of her breathing as she dozes off to sleep.
“Your hugs are nice.” The words, spoken in nothing more than a sleepy whisper, break the silence and, for a moment, Morgan wonders if she’s heard them correctly but, Maddie’s arms wrapping tighter around her, leave no space for doubt.
“Yours are really nice too” she whispers back once Madeleine is sound asleep.

🐿️ + Jordan!
Yay, thank you! Also, gonna tag @dancingsunflowers-ocs and @daughter-of-melpomene because they are my Glee enablers and some of Jordan's biggest Cheerleaders.
A song they love to dance to: Fire Burning by Sean Kingston
The meaning of their middle name: Western Meadow (Wesley)
Their favorite mythical/fantasy animal/figure: He saw that Valkyrie episode of Charmed and promptly became obsessed with them. He did every kind of research he could manage in between takes for a good couple of months.
Salty or sweet snacks? Which kind do they like best?: He likes salty snacks more. Jordan can often be seen munching on pretzels or peanuts in between classes or even when he's just hanging out with the gang.
What they like to do during the winter time: Honestly Jordan is such a work-out machine, he will just take his training inside during Winter months. Also, basketball, of course. When he has some downtime he likes to play video games with Matt.
Their favorite 50s song: Shout by The Isley Boys
Do they drink? If so, what's their favorite drink?: Oh, Jordan drinks. And when he does, he does stupid shit. He's usually decked out in some Tequila or Vodka but Mercedes also gets him kinda hooked on cocktails (she slips in mocktails eventually to ween him off alcohol).
One moment they recoil thinking about: The first ever interview that he did for a major role was so embarrassing on every level. He didn't have a great agent and had zero media training and was only 10 to boot. The interviewer chuckled at him tripping over his words and no one was mad but he was mortified. The worst part is that interview lives on YouTube forever.
If they believe in lucky objects: He does! His mom washed his lucky socks once and he had to wear them for the next four months to get the luck back.
Their first-ever paying job: It was for a car insurance commerical. Pretty good money too.

Strength and Weakness
Location, competition, business strategy, and management are just a few of the variables that might affect a Kingston, Canada-based auto detailing business's strengths and shortcomings. Consider the following probable benefits and weaknesses:
Strengths:
High Demand: The need for automobile detailing services is widespread, even in Kingston. People in the neighbourhood may respect their cars and look for expert detailing to keep them looking good.
Tourism: If Kingston is a popular vacation spot, there might be opportunities to serve travellers who want their cars cleaned before seeing the sights or leaving back home.
Recurring Business: In the automobile detailing business, recurring business and referrals can result from providing high-quality service and cultivating a committed clientele.
site: A strategically chosen site that is highly visible and easily accessible will draw in more clients.
Variety of Services: By providing a range of detailing services, from straightforward washes to more comprehensive packages (such as paint correction and interior detailing), one may better meet the demands of various clients and boost sales.
Partnerships: By collaborating with neighbourhood businesses like vehicle dealerships or auto repair shops, you can increase your consumer base through cross-promotion and recommendations.
Online Presence: Marketing and consumer attraction can benefit from having a strong online presence, which includes a website and active social media profiles.
Weaknesses:
Competition can be strong in Kingston depending on the amount of auto detailing shops there are. It could be difficult for newcomers to stand out.
Seasonality: Kingston's winter weather can be severe, which could have an impact on business. You could need to broaden your offerings or come up with strategies for luring clients in off-peak times.
Operating Costs: With the cost of labour, supplies, and equipment, running a detailing business may be expensive. Effective cost management is essential.
Staffing: Because this sector demands attention to detail and knowledge, it can be difficult to find and keep skilled workers. Service quality inconsistencies may result from high turnover.

Three Nights please! 🧑🏻🔬🤵🏼
For the WIP game.
Here's a snippet from the next chapter of three nights, which I managed to intimidate myself out of writing. We're getting there, though!
---
The car that meets him in Kingston is not a car. It’s a Jeep, and Q’s chauffeur is James Bond.
“Q,” Bond smiles.
“Bond. Lovely to see you.”
Annoyingly, the man looks bloody marvellous, even if his creased navy linen shirt and beige chinos are a world away from the fine suits Q is used to seeing him in. Even the blondish-grey stubble he has going on looks good. All of it is in stark contrast to Q, who feels bleary-eyed, washed out, and grimy in a uniquely post-flight way. His main concern is the fuzziness of his teeth, which he has brushed three times, but still, somehow, manage to feel disgusting. He is careful not to speak directly into Bond’s nose as Bond takes his bags, loads them, and ushers Q into the car.
“Enjoying retirement, then?”
Bond shrugs. “It’s been quiet enough.”
“That’s not what I hear.”
#ask box#ask meme#00q#my fic#thanks for the ask bishy!#i was going to share a completely different snippet for this one but i know how much you love that Bond-in-Jamaica look 👀

The Importance of Car Detailing for Maintaining Resale Value
Car detailing is a complex process that includes more than just washing your car. It also involves removing dirt and grime from hard-to-reach places, vacuuming the interior, scrubbing the wheels and tires, and protecting the paint and glass with a wax coating. It is essential in maintaining your vehicle's appearance and increasing its resale value.
Car Cleaning
A good car cleaning uses professional tools and products to get your vehicle looking its best. A high-quality microfiber wash mitt and low-pH car soap are used to reduce the risk of scratching and damaging the paintwork. A sponge or brush specific to automobiles is also recommended rather than the typical household sponge or cloth. These abrasive materials can cause grit to rub off the clear coat and create scuff marks in the paintwork. These can be visible in direct sunlight, making your car look duller. Among vehicle components, wheels and tires typically accumulate the most dirt parts of a vehicle as they come into contact with road salt, asphalt grime, brake dust, and mud.
Car Detailing
Often, these contaminants get stuck in the tire's grooves and cracks, causing damage over time. It's essential to save them for last, and a separate scrubbing session using a safe, dedicated chemical for your wheels and tires. Next up comes the interior. This is usually the most labor-intensive part of a car detailing job. First, the interior is thoroughly vacuumed, removing any dirt and debris trapped in the crevices of the seats and other surfaces. It is then treated with a special shampoo that's designed for vehicles. This cleaner will restore the original shine to your seat upholstery and leather surfaces and help prevent future stains.
Full Car Wash
Many cars today have dashboards made of a plastic composite called Lexan. This type of plastic is susceptible to solvents and can become brittle over time. Protecting your dashboard with a vinyl protectant after it's been treated is essential. Most detailing services will also clean the air vents, doorjambs, and steering wheel. They may even use compressed air to loosen dirt and debris from your windows' various crevices and corners. Lastly, the wheels and tires will be hit with a separate rinse chemical, as these are usually the grimiest parts of a vehicle.
After cleaning, a protective layer is added to the paintwork and windows with a clear wax and full car wash. This helps to maintain the appearance of your vehicle and protect it from UV rays, scratches, and road salts. This protectant must be reapplied regularly to keep your vehicle looking great. Getting your car detailed regularly is always best to avoid expensive repair bills in the long run.

Common Mistakes in the Car Wash and Detailing Process.
Car detailing is an interaction that includes a profound cleaning of within and beyond your car. Cleaning a car properly and giving it a brand-new appearance is exactly what professionals do.
However, even they are aware that despite their best efforts, certain errors can occur during the detailed process. These slip-ups can make harm your car and may not be observable temporarily, yet they will become glaring over the long run.
Need for car wash and detailing services in Kingston, reach out here
1. Using the Wrong Products.
Detailing is an important part of keeping your car looking its best, whether you want to keep its value up or just keep it in perfect condition. There are numerous items available that can assist you with getting your car clean without harming it.
Dish soaps and detergents are perfect for cutting oil and soil, however, they can likewise strip away car waxes and sealers. That can have a big impact on the paint job on your car.
Another common error is using a drying towel as a cleaning tool improperly. The purpose of drying towels is to provide a gentle, contaminant-free wipe that will not harm your paint.
While you're utilizing a drying towel, it can without much of a stretch get soil that isn't washed off yet, which will make miniature scratches in the paint. Using a drying towel on a car with paint on it is not a good idea because this can cause a lot of damage. For this purpose, a wash mitt made of microfiber is the best choice.
2. Using the Wrong Applicator.
Using the wrong applicator can damage your paint and cause scratches. This is particularly obvious if you're utilizing an old cloth to apply any of the items we've discussed up until this point, for example, a car wash cleanser or itemizing cleaner.
A professional microfiber towel should be used as the appropriate applicator. This is the best sort of towel to use for various reasons, yet principally it assists with getting dry your car appropriately and productively without leaving any water spots behind on your car's paintwork.
One of the most common errors made during the car wash and detailing process is applying the product with the wrong applicator. To avoid this, it is essential to carefully read the directions before beginning any work, and you should only use products that are specifically recommended for the task at hand. Then, at that point, make certain to give the item sufficient opportunity to do its thing for the greatest outcomes. Additionally, it's a good idea to work in a well-lit area, like a garage or covered patio, to protect your paintwork from UV rays.
3. Using Hard Water.
When washing your car, the right water is essential. Even though it might not seem like a big deal, using the wrong kind of water can lead to a wide range of issues.
Minerals in hard water can leave spots and make soap less effective. Your detailing and car washing equipment's performance may also be affected by these minerals.
Using soft water is one of the most common ways to avoid these problems. Soft water is less likely to leave soap scum and water spots because it is easier to rinse.
Additionally, it is less likely to result in scale buildup in plumbing fixtures and appliances.
Additionally, using soft water will keep your car clean for a longer period and prevent rust buildup. Moreover, utilizing delicate water assists you with getting a good deal on items by not expecting to purchase so a lot.
4. Neglecting to Dry.
One of the more serious car wash and detailing slips up is neglecting to dry the surface. This can result in a variety of issues, including uneven drying and water spots.
The best way to make your car look and feel its best is to wipe down the entire car with a towel made of microfiber. You might also want to get a car dryer that only uses air to dry the car.
Using a high-quality product to spray the car's windows is a great idea, but you don't have to go overboard. The equivalent can be said for utilizing a decent vacuum to eliminate residue and garbage from the car's inside surfaces.

Kingston SE
Day 13 26 February
We drove south to Bordertown and on to Naracoorte today. We pulled into a roadside stop along the way to eat our lunch and in no time, two guys with trucks and earthmoving equipment turned up to work on improving the surface of the parking area – it certainly needed it! They said it would very soon become very noisy and dusty and they needed to work in the area where we were parked so we moved a hundred metres further on to another patch of shade and gobbled our lunch down just as they were starting to work.
We thought we might have stayed in Naracoorte but decided to go a bit further to Kingston (SE) on the coast. We set up in the foreshore caravan park there and relaxed with a couple of cold ones before dinner.
The Cape Jaffa Lighthouse overlooking our caravan park. It was repositioned here when the Light was decommisioned at Cape Jaffa.
The caravan park was just across a lawn area and a couple of dunes to the beach so we walked down to the beach to join the small throng congregating there to photograph the sunset.
Sunset from the beach.
Day 14 27 February
We did a load of washing in the park laundry and hung it out to dry – and it was dry within about an hour. We worked on our PCs and made some phone calls (we are trying to find a better place to store our van when we get home) and had a delicious lunch. We eat very well (VERY well!) in the caravan! And then we went for a drive around town and the nearby area. I found quite a few birds near the mouth of the Main Drain and when we drove down some of the other tracks off the main north-south road, we discovered that driving on the beach is a very common thing here. One of the drives was fourteen kilometres each way but we just did a short one – about five clicks each way. At one point along the beach, we encountered a flock of some twenty-odd Red-capped Plovers who were surprisingly unfazed by us. They happily sat ten or fifteen metres away and let us watch and photograph them with no sign of fear. It was a lovely little encounter and we returned to the van soon after. We had been trying to get rid of some recycling that we had accumulated but couldn’t see any yellow-topped bins, so I called in at the Information Centre to see if they did recycling here. They do but it is all very strange with green-topped bins being the only disposal avenue - and only for private premises. We eventually found some in the caravan park but none on the street – at least we managed to ‘put it in a bin’ and our conscience is now clear. (More than a week later, we have found no other way to dispose of our later cache of recycling.)
Day 15 28 February
It rained for about ten or fifteen minutes overnight, contrary to the forecast of zero percent of zero millimetres of precipitation – but at least everything seemed just a little cooler and fresher when we got up.
We had a long drive today but one of the best days of the trip so far. We headed out to the main highway and pointed the car north – and eventually reached Meningie at the top of the Coorong after travelling the full length and then some – well over 300 kilometres for the day.
The road is mainly on the inside of a long range of dunes, the crest of which ripples along unevenly. It was notable that all the high spots on the dunes had a sparce covering of some sort of grass or shrubbery on it: clear evidence that even very small shrubs can withstand the winds better than the adjacent areas that are much more heavily eroded and metres lower than the peaks.
We called in at a number of places as we headed north. The first was at Chinamen’s Wells – something of a tribute to the thousands of Chinese adventurers who arrived along the coast here and walked (or died along the way) to the gold mining enticements around Ballarat and Bendigo. Brave souls, but they left a legacy, and we did an interesting couple of kilometres fairly gentle walk recording some of their travails, looking at plants and birds and reading the signage as we went along.
A well dug and used by thousands of Chinese (and others) walking to Ballarat, Bendigo and other gold-mining adventures. The 1100 kilogram lid for the well was cut from the rock a kilometre away and carried to the well - the second such lid cut after the first one cracked in two.
We had another longish walk to a Pelican Lookout a good deal further north. It was a bit disappointing with the pelicans way too far away to see them, but with some spectacular views overhead as they glided in to their roosting islands from miles away. (See my earlier post showing some of the hundreds of pelicans that flew over us like a squadron of huge bombers gliding in on the updrafts to land on their breeding islands a couple of kilometres away.) They are magnificent birds, just riding the air currents and they really do remind me of WWII bombers sailing over us – massive and truly fabulous. We were surrounded by dozens of Singing and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters, flitting from bush to bush, singing incessantly, but almost impossible to photograph. I have identified more than eighty species of bird so far this trip, but there are MANY small birds that simply hide and I have been unable to see them well enough to identify them. I saw a very shiny dark snake crossing the path six or seven metres ahead of me but really too far away to identify it. It was a metre-and-a-half long, but I had no wish to encounter it close up.
We drove all the way to Meningie where we had stayed for a week or so (and loved it) several years ago. Unfortunately, it was getting late and we had about 150 kilometres to drive back so we didn’t stay long – and like every other place along the coast, it has changed a lot and didn’t seem to have the appeal of our previous visits.
We called in at a place where a couple of farmers cut a channel to drain a swamp on their properties 70-odd years ago. We had seen it before, but the signage has been upgraded since then and we got a better understanding of what a mammoth job it was for two guys with some pretty basic mechanical assistance. They completed it in less than three years - and ran their farms at the same time.
The sign and a photo of the kilometre long and 34-metre deep channel they cut to make their land more productive.
We also called in at Tilley’s Swamp on the way back. I had seen a few swamps marked on the map, but all were a fair way from the highway. Tilley’s was right on the road according to the map but it was at least ten clicks in. I was about to turn back when we crested a hill and there it was on both sides of the road and with plenty of birds to be seen. We spent half an hour looking and then went on to where a number of other lakes were shown on the map – but all too far away and inaccessible from the road. At least Tilley’s was interesting for me, with at least ten or twelve species on it.
We decided to stay in Kingston for another couple of days so tried to book in, only to find the office closed – so we had to wait until tomorrow to book and pay. We have a mammoth Fifth Wheeler parked next to us in the park. (And I saw a similar one in the RV Park on the other side of town.) It takes up two caravan parking sites and I reckon it is more than two-thirds the size of our entire apartment. It has two levels (giving it more floorspace than our whole apartment) and two extendable areas on each side of the vehicle – four in total. They have small Mazda parked in front of it (that they left running with the lights on for about three hours yesterday) but that would get crushed by the ball-weight if they ever tried to hook it up – quite impossible of course because it requires a B-Double type of hitch. The smallest vehicle that could tow it is something like a Ford 400 or similar. I have seen an older guy there a couple of times, but he would need a wife and a family of ten to fill all the space inside. (A couple of days later, there was a woman with a couple of young kids there – along with a silver Mercedes – but still nothing like the vehicle that would be needed to tow it.)
Day 16 29 February
It seems like years since we had an exceptional day like today – exactly four years in fact, but at least it is the end of summer. We didn’t do a lot today. We did a small load of washing in the laundry (we usually do it in our plunger washing bucket) and hung everything on the line – and it was all dry within an hour or so – it was warm and sunny but also very windy. Heather had a script to fill so we found a pharmacy and drove around the local area a bit more. We went out to the mouth of the creek looking at more birds but there was less variety to see than when we were there a couple of days ago.
Day 17 1 March
Autumn today with fabulous weather to match. It was a nice day for a drive so we set off to follow the coastal road to Cape Jaffa (not a lot to see, but easy to get lost in all the new development) and then on to Robe. We have visited Robe a couple of times before and not liked it with their wall-to-wall tourists. It is now several times bigger than it was on our last visit with roughly ten thousand caravans crowding the van parks, lining the streets, blocking intersections and generally outnumbering the locals twenty to one (maybe fifty - just a guess!). We drove around and took in some of the sights before sitting beside a pretty ordinary lake to eat our sangers. The town has obviously developed a lot since we were last there but it still has very little to recommend it to anyone who has any interest in anything except sitting on the beach or going fishing. It was certainly a great place from which to drive away. The one good thing we did while there was to find a fish wholesaler and we stocked up on a variety of seafood. We also visited the supermarket for a couple of items and replenished our stock of booze. The one thing we have tried to get at numerous places along the Limestone Coast – that is famous for its cockles – is coochies as they call them here. Nobody stocks them and their best advice is to try at Goolwa more than two hundred kilometres away. They sell bags of cockles/coochies for bait ($15 for a 250 gram bag) but they say they are not good to eat.
We went on to Beachport – more of the same, but maybe not quite as nice. I think I am over places with nothing to offer other than their crowded beaches. I live in hope that I will see an unusual seabird or wader when I visit the beach, but such delights are very rare.
Milicent and Penola came next with a bit more historical context, with old stone buildings and some nice parks, but it was getting late so we didn’t spend a lot of time at either and headed back to Kingston. We needed fuel and our 265 litres cost us a tad over $537 – at least we travelled over a thousand clicks for our money – at almost 52 cents a kilometre.
We decided on fish and chips for dinner so went to the main fish-jetty shop that advertises that it closes at 7.30pm. Alas, it closed before we arrived at 5.30. We found another place and ordered our meal there along with about five other groups. They must stockpile the orders and then cook them all together. We all had to wait ages – certainly at least 45 minutes – and then all the orders came together and because some of the orders were very similar, it took a couple of minutes to figure out who owned which order. But the fish was excellent and the chips were crisp and tasty, just how we like them.
Day 17 2 March
We spent the day around the van today. We walked down to the beach after breakfast and spent a bit over half an hour shuffling around in the sand at the water’s edge hoping to catch a meal of cockles for ourselves. There were heaps of shells around, but no cockles so I think the locals must have fished them out. They are obviously around along other beaches, certainly north from here, but not where we were – or was that just my fishing prowess being exhibited again?
We did some washing and around lunchtime, the wind came up and it was no violent that we had to roll the awning in. It has been pretty wild and noisy all afternoon but it has also been quite cool so we can’t complain. I wrote a bit more and caught up with a few deferred tasks before showers late in the afternoon and then yet another delicious dinner.
