part one - part two - part three - part four - part five - part six - part seven - part eight - part nine - part ten - epilogue
The flight from New York to Calgary, Canada was exactly five hours and ten minutes. In those five hours and ten minutes of flight, the four of you have been nothing but silent that you swore the whole plane was able to feel the tension between the four of you. You chose to sit by the window next to Joe, and you were still so deep inside your mind about certain things between you two. You love Joe. You do. But were you really going to lose yourself again over a man? Looking at him, he seemed so different and far away. You didnât really know what to do. Somehow, at this moment, you started to doubt all those beliefs you had again about fate because if you and Joe were fate, you wouldnât feel this way about him, right?
The rest of the flight was spent sleeping and letting your head rest by the plane window until Joe had curled a hand at the back of your head and let your head fall gently on his shoulder. Both of you didnât talk much either when you had woken up. It was like you both knew that the distance and the tension was there.Â
By the time the plane arrived in Canada, you all grabbed your luggage and headed to the rental place to rent a car since the cabin was two hours away from the airport. Your arm was locked with Saraâs as you waited for the two men to sign the papers for the car. Looking around, you watched as the snow fell lightly outside. It was glistening along with the sunset from the horizon, and it was just stunning. Canada was beautiful, and you wished that your mind could drift off the thoughts of Joe, so you could enjoy this moment.Â
Looking back at Sara, you could see her face was more relaxed now than how it was when you were in New York. You knew she was hesitating at the beginning because she was short financially, but you couldnât help but give credit to Wes because he was right. You both needed this. Sara needed this. You also hoped that maybe this mini vacation could patch up whatever it was going on between you and Joe.Â
Not moments later, the two men came back with the key in their hands, and you all headed outside and settled everything in the car. You sat at the passenger seat as Joe drove and Wes and Sara had both fallen asleep at the backseat halfway through the trip. You all had two hours to spare and the only thing that filled the silence inside the car was the music playing on the radio.Â
Right before you all headed to the cabin, Joe suggested getting some groceries from the nearby market, so you all have food to cook for tonight. By the time you all arrived at the cabin, the snow had fallen harder. You all ran inside and were stunned by how it looked. The cabin was warm and cozy, and it was still decorated with Christmas decorations even though Christmas was already past a few weeks ago.
âWow.â You murmured, smiling at Sara.
She gave you a smile that you havenât seen in a long time. You missed that smile of hers. It has been so long since you have seen her like this.Â
âLetâs get settled, yeah?â Wes said.
You and Joe made your way up the stairs and entered the room that was down the hall. You smiled as you set your luggage down and looked out the window. You could see the backyard of the cabin and not too far away, there was a trail going into the woods. The tall pine trees were all covered in snow, and it just looked so peaceful. Feeling Joeâs heavy arms wrapped around your waist, he pulled you close to his front as he set his head on your shoulder.
âDid I tell you how much I missed you?â Joe murmured, leaning in to kiss your cheek.Â
You hummed softly, closing your eyes. You missed this Joe. Your Joe that would be so sweet and soft to you. Sliding his arms off of you, you turned around, wrapping your arms around his neck. A small smile on your face as you looked into his chocolate button eyes.Â
âI missed you too.â You murmured before leaning in to kiss him softly.
Joe smiled through the kiss as he pulled you close to him and moved the both of you to the bed. He laid you gently as he towered over you, kissing you deeply. Joeâs fingers found the hem of your sweater as his lips moved down your jawline and down your neck.
âJoeâŠâ You whispered, pulling away. âWes and Sara are downstairs.â
âThen, we just have to be really quiet then.â He grinned pulling your sweater over your head and threw it on the floor, leaving you in just your bra.Â
Joe was quick to unclasp them too and threw them with your sweater on the floor. His lips kissed your breasts softly, letting out a small moan from your lips.Â
God, Joe missed those sounds.Â
He missed every inch of you as your fingers tangled in his hair, tugging on them lightly. Joe left hot kisses down your body as his fingers worked the button of your jeans. You missed him. You missed this. You missed everything about him and for a moment, you thought maybe you were right. This vacation could be something that could restore the distance that had been pulling the both of you away from each other. Joe gazed up at you through his lashes as he left small kisses on your belly, making you giggle softly. Suddenly, the both of you got interrupted when Joeâs phone rang in his back pocket. He ignored it as he started unbuttoning your jeans and unzipped them, but you couldnât really enjoy it with his phone making noises, echoing through the room.Â
âJoeâŠâ You whispered as his phone continued to ring.
Joe let out a sigh as he got up from the bed. He pulled out his phone from his back pocket and looked down at the screen and sighed again.
âIâm sorry, I got to take this.â He answered the phone and left the room, leaving you there on the bed half naked.
You got up from the bed and bit your nails anxiously before you decided to pick up your clothes on the floor and put them back on. You waited for Joe for a few more minutes but as soon as you realized that he wasnât coming back any time soon, you decided to go downstairs to see what Wes and Sara were doing.Â
You found the couple putting away the food that you all bought in the cupboard and there was no sign of Joe anywhere.Â
âHey!â Wes smiled happily as soon as he saw you. âI was thinking maybe we should go snowboarding tomorrow? Sara had been wanting to try, so I think it will be fun, yeah?â
You nodded your head in agreement, giving him a smile as your eyes scanned the room.Â
âHeâs outside.â Sara answered the question that you have been asking in your head.
âOh. Okay.â You said, biting your lower lip, your fingernail found the edges of your teeth again.Â
âEverything okay?â Sara asked, touching your forearm lightly.
You nodded your head. âIâm kinda tired, so Iâll be upstairs.â
âOkay.â Sara gave you her worried eyes as you walked away.
Changing into something more comfortable, you slipped yourself under the covers and let out a deep breath. It was for the first time ever where you felt the peace and quiet. Your mind wasnât running around thinking what to do for work or worry about the next bill to pay. Though, there was one subject your mind couldnât seem to let go.Â
Joe.
You stared at the ceiling as you tried to drift your mind somewhere else. You didnât want to overthink again. Maybe all of it was just in your head. Maybe it was just you being exhausted from everything. Not moments later, Joe entered the room, interrupting your thoughts. A small smile tugged on his face as soon as he saw you. He kicked off his shoes and slid under the covers with you.
âHey, love.â He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close to his side. âSorry about that.â
âEverything okay?â You asked, laying your head on his chest.Â
âYeah.â He drew circles on your arm, planting a soft kiss on your hair. âAre you okay? I hope this vacation will help you relax a little. I know work has been busy.â
âYeah, Iâm fine.â You muttered, burying your face on his chest.Â
âI love you so much, darling.â Joe whispered, tightening his arm around you and kissed your forehead.
âI love you too.â You replied, closing your eyes.
Your mind wondered again. Joe was here. He was here so close to you but how come he still felt so far away? How come you couldnât bring yourself to really say what you wanted to say? How come your mind and your heart have been fighting to figure out the right answers to all your questions in your head? How come you were slowly fading away from him?Â
It was as if your body was here, but your heart and soul had gone somewhere else.Â
You couldnât explain any of your feelings anymore.Â
Just when you thought you were just overthinking, how come your mind got you questioning everything again? You thought snowboarding was going to be something you and Joe could do together after being so far away from each other for so long.Â
So, how come when the morning came and the four of you had gone to the mountains to go snowboarding, you were coming down the hill all by yourself? How come you had found yourself just watching Wes teaching Sara how to snowboard, while Joe was in the corner talking to his phone the whole time?Â
Your eyes watched Sara and Wes and couldnât help but smile that they were finally getting along again. Then, your eyes lingered towards Joe. He was standing under one of the pine trees, talking to his phone. Your attention was caught by Wes, who was waving you over to them.Â
âHold on. Iâll be back.â Wes told Sara. âCould you please hold her for a second?âÂ
You nodded your head as you switched places with him and held Saraâs hands to make sure she didnât lose her balance.
âHey, whatâs going on?â Sara asked.Â
You gave her a shrug and didnât say anything else because honestly, you really didnât know what was going on. Emotionally, you were just feeling many emotions that you couldnât explain at all. So, you really didnât know how to answer the question.Â
âIâm here if you want to talk.â Sara reassured you.
âThank you.â You gave her a small smile.Â
The rest of the afternoon was spent snowboarding with Wes and Sara, while Joe just watched because he had made an excuse that he was kind of tired. You didnât say anything. You didnât push him to join you because you learned your lesson from when you suggested your little suggestion to Sara about the bookshop.Â
Never again. You told yourself.
But everything felt heavy again. Everything inside of you wanted to scream.Â
But you didnât. You kept your mouth shut and tried to enjoy your time with Wes and Sara instead.
The four of you found yourselves in a small diner that night after a long day of snowboarding. Dinner was quiet. Everyone was exhausted.Â
You were exhausted.Â
Not because of snowboarding because you barely did that today. You were exhausted with everything.
âIâll be right back.â Joe excused himself in the middle of dinner as he went to the restroom.
You werenât the kind of girl to be snooping around someone elseâs property. Even if that was your boyfriendâs but Joeâs phone was right there next to you. The screen lit up as he received a message and it was one glimpse. One glimpse. You saw her name. Two missed calls for the last hour or so. You felt your stomach turn as you remembered their photos together that Nicola had shown you. You trusted Joe.
You wanted to trust Joe.
So, you didnât say anything. You let it go. You kept your mouth shut even if your doubtful thoughts were starting to run inside your brain.Â
You kept your mouth shut.
The ride home was quiet too. Not one person said a word, and you figured maybe everyone was just tired but you saw that look on Saraâs face earlier at dinner the moment the check had arrived. Her small little smiles from this morning had become bitter again when she saw that Wes had paid for her. Again. You werenât sure if it was a way for you to distract your stormy thoughts towards Joe that you had started paying attention to Wes and Sara, but you were also worried about your best friend. Her relationship was just slowly shattering, and you couldnât help but feel useless from all of it. Maybe it was a way for you to feel better that if you could do something about Wes and Sara, at least one of you would still be happy.Â
At least Sara would be happy. That was enough for you at this moment.Â
You swore if you heard that ring one more time, you wouldnât hesitate to take the phone and throw it out the window. You were awakened by Joeâs phone ringing in the middle of the night. You didnât move. You didnât say anything as you felt the bed move and quiet footsteps walked towards the door. Joe shut the door quietly behind him as he answered his phone. Then, you opened your eyes and all you could see was the small light illuminating through the window. A tear rolled down your cheek as you hugged your pillow closer to your chest.Â
Your heart slowly stopped beating for Joe.Â
You were at the end of your rope. Your glass was slowly overflowing.Â
The hurricane inside of you was starting to get bigger, and you didnât know how much more you could control it.Â
The next morning was quiet. You were up early, and Joe was gone from your side. You sat by the window and watched the birds sitting on the trees and chirping loudly. The snow finally stopped and everything around you was glistening. Almost enchanting. The sound of the door opening caught your attention as Joe entered the room.Â
âHey, youâre up.â Joe smiled.Â
âYeah.â You murmured.Â
âEverything okay?â Joe walked towards you and immediately stopped when the both of you heard arguments down the hall.Â
You let out a sigh as soon as you heard Wes and Saraâs voices disappear down the hall. You knew this was coming since last night.Â
âAre they arguing?â Joe knitted his brows, surprised from what he was hearing.
âThat has been constant lately.â You said, looking out the window again.Â
âConstant? I⊠I didnât know that.â Joe said. âAre they okay?â
You shrugged, your eyes still focused out the window. Sara and Wes were arguing so loud that even when they were outside by your window, you could hear the whole conversation. You felt Joe walked up behind you as soon as he saw your concerned expression. His hands rubbed your arms softly to comfort you, but you felt so far away from him.Â
âYou just donât understand it, Wes!â Sara exclaimed.Â
âThen, talk to me, Sara!â Wes reached for her hand, but Sara moved her hand away.Â
She was so far away from him too.Â
âIâve been trying my best to understand. Please, just talk to me.â Wes finally lowered his voice. His pleading eyes looked into Saraâs. âTell me what is inside your mind because I donât know what else to do. You think itâs easy for me to see you like this?â
You purse your lips as you watch Sara shake her head, tears falling from her eyes. You sat there and didnât move. Joe continued to comfort you as he planted a soft kiss on your hair, but you were fading away slowly from his arms.Â
âIââ Sara sobbed. âDo you know how hard it is for me to watch my best friend work overtime every single day? Just because of my stupid decision to hire Cole in the first place, who by the way, hasnât been caught yet.â
âSara, that was not your faultâŠâ Wes took a few steps forward towards her. âYou didnât know that he was going to do that. It could happen to anyone.â
Sara felt guilty of you doing overtime? You didnât know that. In fact, you were the one who felt guilty for pushing her to hire someone in the bookshop in the first place. Maybe communication really had disappeared from the two of you.Â
âAnd I know Iâm struggling, but I feel so useless over the fact that she has to pay for rent, the utility bills, and you also have to pay for my own vacation?â Sara scoffed, wiping the tears that were rolling down her cheeks.Â
You watched as Wes reached for her hand, wiping her tears away. He tilted his head to find her eyes with his. You closed your eyes for a moment as you heard Joeâs phone rang again. Your heart wasnât beating anymore. You couldnât move as Joe excused himself and answered the phone call, leaving you all alone in the room.Â
Again.Â
âSara, we did all those things for you not because we felt sorry for you. We did it because we love you and care about you. Itâs not wrong to ask for help, and Iâm sorry that I wasnât more understanding with your situation, but I love you, Sara. I would do anything to make you happy. I would do anything to help you and to make sure you were okay. I just need you to please open up to me.âÂ
Suddenly, you were gone. You werenât here anymore. You felt numb. You felt the tears welled up in your eyes as you watched Sara also apologize to Wes for being so distant and shutting him out.Â
âI know I shouldn't have thrown my anger at you too. Iâm sorry.â Sara murmured, Wes cupping her face with his hands. âI promise Iâll open up. It was just so hard.â
âI know, darling. I know.â You watched Wes kissed her softly and pulled her into a tight hug.
Your heart had stopped beating because how could Joe do this? How could he just leave you like this? How could he just act like nothing was wrong? You heard the door open again and heard that same apology escaping from his lips. The storm inside of you had gotten bigger, and Joe was about to deal with the final blow.Â
âWho is she, Joe?â You asked, holding in your tears. Your eyes were still staring out the window.Â
âWhat?âÂ
You turned to face him, tears welling up in your eyes. âWho is she?â
Joe stood there for a moment until realization hit him. You saw it. You saw it all over his face. He walked towards you, shaking his head.
âIt was just my co-star.â He reached for your hand. âHey, thereâs nothing going on between us. She had been going through something personal, and she trusted me, so I was trying to be there for her.â
You finally got up, pushing his hand away. âAnd I wasnât?!â
Joe was taken aback by your anger as tears rolled down your cheeks. Joe didnât say anything. He stood there.Â
He just stood there.Â
âI havenât said anything because I know how complicated your job is. But Joe, I havenât heard from you in weeks. I havenât seen you in months. Then, when weâre finally together, itâs like youâre not even here.âÂ
Joe took your hands in his again. âThis is not what I meant for you to feel. Iâm sorry that I have been so distant. Iââ
âYou knew, Joe! You knew what has been happening here, but you didnât even call! You didnât even try!â You sobbed. âYou know what Wes did for Sara during New Yearâs? While you were in London, he brought her there to meet his family even when they were constantly fighting. I didnât go because I figured if you wanted to see me, youâd call.âÂ
You shook your head, pulling your hands away from him. You were slipping away from him, and Joe couldnât do anything about it. Joe was trying his best to save what was left between you two. He had been so busy that he didnât realize that you were slipping away from his fingers more and more every day.Â
âBut you didnât. You didnât even call to say Happy New Year until two days later, but you have all the time to care for her even when you know that I have been struggling!â You took a deep breath, feeling everything that has been weighing you down finally come out.Â
âIâm so sorry.â Joe hung his head low. âI have no excuses for everything that I did. Iâ I thought about you every day. I thought about how I couldnât do anything because I was so far away from you. I⊠I didnât know what to do. I wanted to call but every time I did, there was always a problem on set. There was always an interview, or a photoshoot. I know I should have tried harder, but I love you so much, darling. I never wanted you to feel like I didnât care about you because I do. Youâre everything to me.â
âAll I wanted was to hear your voice.â You murmured. âTo know that even when you were far away, you were still there. All I wanted was to hear your voice after a long day of work.â You sobbed, wiping the tears that ran down your face. âEverything has been so heavy, and you were the only light thing that made all those heavy things cancel out, but you werenât even there, Joe. You disappeared. And when you came back, I thought things were going to get better, but I was just slowly dying even more, and you couldnât even see that. It feels like you werenât even here. Sheâs more important to you from what I have seen.â
âI⊠Iâm so sorry.â Joe pleaded. âShe is not more important than you, love. You are the most important person in my life. I never wanted to hurt you like this.â
âIâm exhausted, Joe.â You muttered, wiping the last of your tears.Â
He had lost you.Â
âI canât lose myself again over someone.â You said.Â
Oh god, he really lost you.Â
No, he had lost you a long time ago, and he didnât even realize it.Â
âYou promised to take away all my doubts but how come it added even more?âÂ
âI love you so much.â Joe cupped your cheeks, wiping the dried tears on your face. âPlease, love. Please let me fix this. Give me another chance.â
You shook your head, slipping his hands away from your face. âI love you too, but I canât.â
Joeâs tears welled up in his eyes too as he tried to reach for you, but you were so far away from him now. What had he done? How did he fucked up this bad? How could he lose the one important person in his life? How could he be so blind?Â
âI truly believed that we were fate but maybe I wasnât right after all. Maybe you were wrong. Maybe we met just so we could learn something from this.â You whispered.Â
âNo,â Joe shook his head, pulling you in his arms. âI can't imagine my life without you. I love you so much.â
You buried your face on his shoulder, âIâm sorry. I just can't do this right now.â
You slipped away from his arms, wiped the tears that were rolling down his cheeks before letting him go completely. Joe stood there frozen as you walked out of the room and down the stairs. You were greeted by Wes and Sara entering the cabin as soon as you arrived at the foot of the stairs. Sara immediately saw the puffy red teary eyes you had.
âHey, whatâs wrong?â Saraâs eyes widened.Â
You didnât say anything as you grabbed your coat and walked out the door. Sara didnât hesitate to follow as Wes turned and saw Joe on the top of the stairs.Â
âHey, what happened, mate?â Wes asked.Â
âItâs over.â Joe said.Â
âOâOver?â Wes asked, confused. âBut what about the proââ
âItâs not happening.â Joe cut him before walking back into his room.Â
Wes stood there in shock as he tried to figure out how to help his best friend. He finally made up with Sara and now, you and Joe were over? What about the plans he helped Joe make for you?Â
âThis vacation sucks.â Wes muttered under his breath as he closed the front door.Â

Moose - Just Us Chapter 77
Warnings: None
Word Count: 4790
Series List | Chapter 76 | Chapter 78
================================
We were now waiting at baggage collection, Wanda pulled into my side as my right arm rests over her shoulder. The boy's eyes follow every bag that goes past, double checking to see if they are ours or not as they bounce on their feet excitedly. Luckily, they seem a lot more awake than they were this morning which makes sense since they slept on the plane.Â
I rest my head on top of Wanda's feeling her relax against me more, closing my eyes for a moment as I breathe in her scent. When they open up I smile against her hair when I see the boys both grabbing each of our bags off the conveyor belt, turning around with proud smiles on their faces when they show us.Â
"Okay so we have the bags. What now?" Tommy asks as he passes me my suitcase.
"Now we head out, we can grab a drink and some food from one of the shops here. Then you have to look out for a white hat volunteer."
"A white hat volunteer?" Billy passes Wanda's bag to her.
"Yeah, so they wear white hats and red vests. They are people who welcome you to Calgary and have bits of information and everything. I just need to know where to find our rental car."Â
"Okay so we have the bags, we need to find where we are going and get coffee. Also go to the toilet now because we have a nearly 3 hour drive ahead of us." Wanda lists off as we all start walking out of baggage claim.Â
Wanda holds her hand in mine swaying them between us as we follow the boys closely behind, as they follow the signs above to the exit. As the boys lead us towards the exit me and Wanda look out for a coffee shop in desperate need of a caffeine boost. When we finally find one we decide to sit down and to drink it so the boys can disappear to the toilet without getting lost.
"So what's the plan once we leave the airport?" Wanda blows on the top of her coffee before taking a sip.
"Well I thought since we have had a long day of travelling we can just have a relaxed night by the fire watching movies or playing a board game. Then tomorrow we can come back and explore Calgary and some surrounding areas maybe. Or make that a day or two thing. Then it's going to be snowing so we will be sort of stuck in the cabin for a while as the roads can be quite dangerous but it doesn't mean we can't go outside. There are a few look out sights around the area we can look at the mountains from. But we can ask one of the white hats for a guide."
"Okay. So we are definitely exploring, I mean you can't not explore. Where we go is up to you, since you've been here a few times so you know the good spots. The boys have only dealt with New York snow so it should be an adventure for them." She takes another sip of coffee as I watch the boys join the queue to get themselves a drink. "What about wild animals? How likely are we to run into them?"
"We will see them on the drive up to the cabin, but I own the land and paid to have it fenced. It's not fenced off that much that it causes issues with the wildlife, but it is enough so we can explore the surrounding forest a little. Although we should still be careful because the fence doesn't always stop the animals. But we have security cameras that are motion sensors and infrared so we can check for anything before we go out."
"Okay." Wanda takes in the information as the boys join us at the table.
"You mentioned there was a lake?" Tommy takes a sip of his hot chocolate.
"Yeah, it might freeze over during the week but if you want to we can do some fishing while it isn't. We can cook fresh fish too if that's something you want to do?"
"I've never been fishing before, so yes please!" Tommy shuffles excitedly in his seat as I smile warmly at him.
"What about you Billy?" He simply shakes his head.
"I never liked the idea of fishing, sitting there for ages with nothing on the end of the line. I brought the camera so I can take pictures and that. It's for a school project."
"That sounds cool, it's like the most picturesque place I've ever seen."Â
"Yeah I've always enjoyed photography, capturing something in the moment that will last forever."
"Maybe I will join you on one of your photography missions. I think it's about time I draw the mountains again."Â
"Awesome. I'm already so excited and I don't even know where we are going." Me and Wanda let out a small laugh at that before we both finish our drinks.
I stand up from my chair once the boys have finished their drinks, moving over to Wanda and holding my hand out for her to take as she stands up. The boys walk ahead of us on a mission to find us a white hat volunteer, while me and Wanda smile at the sight of the boys pointing out things around the airport as we wander around. Â
"Look there's a lady in a white hat and red vest." Tommy points out to me and Wanda as Billy starts to make his way over to the smiling lady.Â
Me and Wanda start to make our way over as Tommy runs over to join Billy who is already chatting to the lady. When Tommy points to me and Wanda the lady smiles wider, gently placing her hand on the boys back as they all walk towards us.
"Hiya folks, welcome to Calgary my name is Janet. Where have you guys flown in from?" I tilt my head slightly as I try to recall where I have seen this woman before.
"New York! We had to get up, like, super early!" Tommy complains, I let out a small laugh while I put my arm over Wanda's shoulder.
"Oh New Yorkers! Is it your first time visiting Calgary?" She aims the questions at the boys as they bounce on their feet in excitement.
"It's ours and mom's first time in Canada. Y/n's been here a few times."Â
"Well that is so much to do! Here are these." She hands both the boys a guide then one between me and Wanda. "So where are you guys going?"
"We don't know." Billy shrugs as he playfully glares at me. "Y/n won't tell us."Â
"Fine, we are going to my cabin at Cathedral Mountain."Â
"Where's that?" Tommy tilts his head in question.Â
"Wow you own one of the cabins up there?" Janet looks at me as a look of realisation crosses her face. "Y/n, I thought the name sounded familiar. You own the Stark cabin don't you?"Â
"I do, yes. How did you know?"
"My husband and I own a cabin across the lake. My daughter and granddaughter are staying there for a few weeks."Â
"Wait Mrs Bishop?" She nods her head at me and I immediately engulf her in a hug. "Wow it's been a while since I've seen you last. How is Eleanor? And Kate! How old is she now?"Â
"It has been a while dear. Eleanor is doing well and Kate is 19 now." She moves out of the hug and looks to the other three who look very confused.
"Oh sorry guys. Janet, this is my girlfriend Wanda and her two boys Billy and Tommy. Guys this is my cabin neighbour Janet, I've known her since we first brought the cabin, but have only run into each other once or twice over the years. It must be three years now, wow you look good Mrs Bishop. No wonder I didn't recognise you straight away."
"It's nice to meet you." Wanda holds out her hand, but Janet pulls her into a hug which Wanda instantly relaxes into.Â
"Sorry I'm a hugger dear." Janet mentions as she releases Wanda. "So how long have you been together?"Â
"Well we met on the 10th of last month so just over a month and a half. But it will officially be one month, tomorrow since she asked me to be her girlfriend." Wanda beams up at me as I speak.
"Well it's lovely to meet you all." Janet leans up to whisper in my ear. "I'm sure Eleanor won't mind keeping an eye on the boys if you want to celebrate your one month."
I blush a little at the insinuation as Janet smirks at me, while Wanda looks at me confused. I shrug and Wanda doesn't ask any questions as Janet nudges my shoulder.
"Anyway Janet. We came looking for a white hat since I don't know where the rental place is."Â
"How do you not know? You have been here plenty of times."Â
"We used to hire a driver for the airport transport, but since this is more of a family vacation it's easier for me to drive."Â
"Okay well if you go towards the main exit, it's like a tiny little booth on the right with one or two workers. You can't really miss it as it has a big sign above saying Calgary car hire."Â
"Thank you Janet."
"Of course dear. Anything else I can help you with?" I look around to the other three who are simply watching the interaction shaking their heads at her question. "Very well, but you guys best come to my cabin for dinner at some point before you leave."
"Of course. Is there anything we should bring?" Wanda asks as we all start moving towards the exit, Janet walking with us.
"Just yourselves and some warm clothes dear."Â
"Okay, how about Thursday?" Wanda continues her conversation as I spot the car hire place.
"Thursday is perfect. I will see you then, dear." She hugs Wanda then me.
"See you then Janet." The boys give her a small wave as she walks back to her post.
My hand moves down to hold onto Wanda's as I start to walk us to the car hire place, the boys on either side of us as we all drag our suitcases behind us. I smile at the man behind the counter who is too busy typing into his computer to even look up at us, holding a single finger in the air silently telling us to wait. I raise my eyebrows at the action and turn to look at Wanda who has the same expression on her face. We wait a few minutes before Wanda huffs.
"Excuse me, I'm sure you're busy but we've just got off our plane and would much rather be driving to our destination than waiting here for you to do your job." I twist my lips as Wanda leans against the counter, the man's eyes widening slightly at the angered tone of Wanda's voice. I may or may not be swooning over the fact her accent was audible too.
"Right, sorry. Hi, how can I help?" He straightens out some papers on the desk as he looks between me and Wanda.
"I pre-booked a car under the name Y/n Barton." He nods as he types away on his computer.
"I have you down for the white jeep wrangler Rubicon from today until the 30th."
"Yeah that's the one."
"Perfect so I just need the card you paid with and your driving licence." I pass them off to him and he looks at the passport then the card, then back to me. "The name on the licence and the card are different, can I also have a look at your passport."
"Jeez, you have stronger security than most airports." He lets out a small laugh as I hand it over.
"Unfortunately, it's a policy. We know that people change their names, but we need extra proof if it occurs so we can confirm that the names and address matches. Or something like that. If I don't do it, I get fired and I can't be having that."
He looks between the three items.Â
"So because the surname on the license and passport are Stark I am going to have to change that in our database even if you don't go by that name anymore."
"No problem. I get it, you're just doing your job." The boys both scrunch their brows at me then up to Wanda who shows herself zipping her lips so the boys press their lips together and go back to looking around the airport.
"Okay so that's all sorted, here are the keys and paperwork with emergency numbers and terms and conditions. The manual for the car will be in the glove box. If you come out of here turn right and follow the signs for the car hire parking lot you should easily find your vehicle.I hope you enjoy your stay in Calgary."
"Thank you." I take the keys and the four of us start in the direction the young man had told us.Â
Once we spot the car the boys sprint off both calling shotgun on the front seat, trying to push in front of one another, with me and Wanda laughing at their antics as we slowly follow behind them. Once a small amount of arguing starts Wanda simply tilts her head raising her eyebrows and the boys stop immediately, bowing their heads.Â
"Right bags in the back, then boys in the back." Wanda takes the keys from my hand to unlock the car.
"But I called shotgun mom!" Tommy whines as he trudges to the back of the car.
"Actually I called shotgun, so you will have to sit in the back with Tommy mom." Billy tries to act smug, but zips his lips when Wanda quirks her brow again.Â
"What do you think Y/n? Who should be sat upfront with you?" Tommy pleads with his eyes but I simply wrap my arm around Wanda.
"As the driver of the car I decree that your mother gets the passenger seat every time we share a car, but any other time shotgun rules."
"I guess that's fine." Tommy grumbles as Wanda kisses the underside of my jaw, before leaving my grasp to open the back door of the car.Â
Once we are all settled in the car, and having let it warm up with it idle in the parking lot, I set the destination in the navigation system. I rest my arm on the back of Wanda's chair as I look behind me and out of the rearview window to see what I'm doing when reversing. I turn around catching Wanda staring at me with flushed cheeks before I put the vehicle in drive and get us going.Â
"So we are going to be driving through Calgary, then will be driving along the prairie land. So everything is super flat until we reach the mountains, but it creates such a beautiful view. We will also be driving through a place called Banff, which is a nice little mountain town. We will explore these places probably tomorrow and Tuesday since it is not snowing. We can do some sightseeing and shopping, go to some cute cafĂ©s, that sort of thing. Then when it snows we can stay up in the cabin for a lot of it. Thursday we have dinner with the Bishop's. Apart from that we have nothing apart from relaxing to do. Everyone happy?"Â
"Happy!" They all say in unison. Creepy.
I look over to Wanda who, at some point through my ramble, interlocked our hands resting it on the arm rest between our chairs. Her head is resting on her other hand which is being propped up by her elbow on the door, a fuzzy smile on her face as her eyes look into my soul once more. I divert my attention back to the road before looking in the rearview mirror to check on the boys who are on their phones. I feel Wanda squeeze my hand to get my attention, and I squeeze it back to let her know she has it while my eyes flick back to the road.
"I love you."
"Love you too Princess." I laugh when I hear the boys fake gag in the back and Wanda sends them a glare.
~~~~
We've been on the road for about an hour, the boys and Wanda having been looking out the windows at the passing scenery since we got out of Calgary, their eyes lighting up at the sight of a few deers in the fields. Wanda perks up leaning forward to the stereo controls when a new song starts playing. The boys lean forward slightly and I smile and the happy smiles they both have.
"This is one of our favourite songs." Wanda blushes as she says it, and I only smile wider, turning it up more.Â
(Shotgun - George Ezra)
Homegrown alligator, see you later
Gotta hit the road, gotta hit the road
Something changed in the atmosphere
Architecture unfamiliar
I could get used to this
I smile when the boys start singing, swaying their bodies side to side in their seats. I look at Wanda who is shyly whispering the lyrics. I squeeze her hand gently taking a quick look at her as I start singing the next verse trying my best to show her it's okay to sing aloud, as I look back to the road.
Time flies by in the yellow and green
Stick around and you'll see what I mean
There's a mountaintop that I'm dreaming of
If you need me you know where I'll be
I look back at Wanda when I realise she stopped singing, the boys only getting louder, and see her already looking at me with her lip between her teeth. Her eyes show me so much love and as I continue to sing as I turn my attention back to the road I see a smile grow on her face from my peripheral vision. I give her hand another squeeze and smile widely when I hear her start singing the chorus.
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone (someone)
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone
All of us are now swaying our bodies left to right, and I tap my hand against the steering wheel, as we get into our groove and start to enjoy the music. Wanda's voice is more confident and for never having heard I sing, I'm amazed her voice is beautiful and she has a husk to it that makes my heart soar at the sound. I just fell more in love with her if that is even possible.
We're south of the Equator, navigator
Gotta hit the road, gotta hit the road
Deep sea diving 'round the clock, bikini bottoms, lager tops
I could get used to this
Time flies by in the yellow and green
Stick around and you'll see what I mean
There's a mountaintop that I'm dreaming of
If you need me you know where I'll be
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone (someone)
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone
Wanda let's go of my hand as she starts dancing in her seat, moving her hand in time to the beat. At first she simply taps at the air but it slowly transforms into her hands waving about in the air looking like waves, or rolling her wrist with her fingers like she is trying to entice someone. She giggles a little when she sees me turning my head to look as she sings a few lyrics to me before I turn my attention back to the road.Â
We got two in the front (hey)
Two in the back (hey)
Sailing along
And we don't look back (back, back)
Time flies by in the yellow and green
Stick around and you'll see what I mean
There's a mountaintop that I'm dreaming of
If you need me you know where I'll be
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone (someone)
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone (someone)
I'll be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun
Feeling like a someone, a someone, a someone, someone
I look in the rearview mirror and smile when I watch the boys sing to one another as they bop their heads, smiling at one another. I look back to the road and feel Wanda's hand creep into mine as she brings it up to her lips and starts to sing against the back of my hand. I take a quick look over at her to see her already looking at me with her fuzzy smile before she continues to sing against my hand and I look back to the road.Â
We all let out small giggles when the song comes to an end and Wanda leans forward to turn the stereo back down. As she leans back she brings our hands back to her lips as she peppers the back of my hand with kisses, so I squeeze her hand in return. Once she has deemed all of my hand kissed, she brings it down to rest in her lap as she rests her back against the headrest.Â
"Guys look." I point out the window to the mountains that we are now starting to drive past, the flat land left behind.
"Woah. It's beautiful." Wanda's jaw drops as she looks out her window.
"It only gets more beautiful from here."Â
~~~~~
We have just passed through Banff which means we have another hour left of our journey, the boys are on their phones keeping themselves entertained as Wanda takes a small nap. I suddenly see something in the road that makes me wake her up knowing she won't want to miss it and grab the boy's attention.
"Princess, boys. Look what's on the road." Wanda's eyes flutter open just by the sound of my voice and the boys lean forward to look through the windscreen and I smile when I hear all three of them gasp.
"Holy cow! That's huge!" Wanda sits forward in her seat more as I slow the car down so I can avoid the animal.
"Actually mom, I think it's a moose." Tommy giggles as Wanda rolls her eyes before they go back to looking at the huge animal.
"It is indeed a moose. Looks like a fully grown male to me with how big it is."Â
It's walking on our side of the road, I slow down even more to make sure I don't spook it as I check the other side of the road. When I confirm there are no other cars coming I slowly pull out onto the other side and up next to the moose. Wanda and the boys look up to the moose as we pass at a safe distance before I get back to our side of the road and slowly speed up.
"That was bigger than the car!" Billy squeals as him and Tommy look at the rearview window as Wanda looks in her side mirror.
"Yeah, that was probably about 2.5m to the shoulder. They are big creatures. Dangerous too."
"I didn't think they were that big. I always thought they were like deer in size." Wanda thinks aloud as she looks to the boys who look at her nodding.
"Well hopefully we see a few more during this week. We may get lucky and see some bears and wolves too."Â
"Wait wolves and bears! Will there be any by the cabin?" I shake my head at Billy's question.
"Shouldn't be. The land is fenced off to a certain point so we are protected."Â
"Damn I wanted to see a bear...or a wolf." I laugh as he slumps back in his chair.Â
"Well there are plenty of times that you see them on the road, so keep an eye out everytime we drive. You might get lucky." With that both boys start looking out the windows desperate to find the animals they want to see.
Wanda pulls my hand up to her face, her hand moving behind mine as she presses it against her cheek. She kisses the palm of my hand and I start rubbing my thumbs over her cheek bone, I feel her lean into my hand more. She kisses it a few more times before placing it in her lap as she plays with my fingers, and I smile when she starts drawing random shapes and patterns.
~~~~
"And we are here." I inform them as I stop the car on the gravel.
"Wow this is massive." Tommy says as he climbs out of the car with Billy.
"It is beautiful Y/n." Wanda leans over the center console to kiss my cheek before she climbs out of the car.Â
I join them in grabbing our bags from the back before pushing the door shut and locking the car watching as the three of them race to the front of the cabin. I smile as they look through the windows of the cabin gasping at what they see inside. I make it to the front door of the cabin, watching their excitement grow as I unlock the door. They walk into the cabin, eyes scanning every detail as they spin around to get a full view.Â
"Okay so Tommy your room is going to be up the stairs third door on the right, Billy yours is the first door on the right. The second door is a cupboard with some games and other stuff in it. Boys, your rooms have their own toilets, but make sure you lock both doors when doing your business because the other door leads to the shared bathroom. You have two sinks and there is a walk in shower, so you sort out who is showering first between you two."
"Okay Y/n!" They both shout as they make their way up the stairs holding their suitcases up so they don't bump against the stairs.Â
"Where are we staying?" Wanda asks as I grab her bag nodding for her to go up the stairs.
"We are in the only room on the left hand side. We have an ensuite with both a big bath that fits two, and a walk in shower like at your apartment. The room has a built-in wardrobe, a few chest of drawers and the view is spectacular."Â
She opens the door and her eyes scan the room as she walks around dragging a hand over every surface. She looks back to me after a while, and I let go of the suitcases when she runs towards me and jumps. I easily catch her as she wraps her arms and legs around my body while I spin us around a couple of times.
"You happy princess."
"I'm over the moon baby. This is so beautiful, it's amazing, it'sâŠ.I love it. I love you. So, so much." I smile at her as I bring our lips together for a few seconds before resting my forehead against hers.
"Go have a look out the window." I put her down and she shuffles over to the window, a small gasp escaping her lips as she looks up to the mountains.
"I wish we could stay forever in this moment." I come up behind her wrapping my arms around her waist as my chin comes to rest on the top of her head.
"You get to see this everyday for the whole week Wanda."Â
"I'm never going to get bored of that view." I kiss the top of her head.
"The view never gets boring, it's always as mesmerising as the first time I saw it."
"Y/n. Remember what I told you my dream home was?"
"I do and I know princess. We can have our own cabin in the mountains, in the woods, by a lake one day. You just need the boys to be in college." She turns around with a few tears in her eyes and I smile softly at her as I cup her cheeks.
"You remembered?" I nod softly as I lean down to peck her lips a few times.
"If it is a dream of yours then it is a dream of mine."
âYou got the camera baby?â Remus called as he shut the trunk of the white rental car.
âOuais, et j'ai les collations lĂ .âÂ
Remus smiled as he translated in his head. Being in Banff National Park, or Parc national Banff as Sirius exclusively called it, with signs and boards and everything in French as well as English, had set Sirius into a firmly French state of mind. Remus was absolutely not complaining, the melodic sounds scratched his brain just right, even if he couldnât replicate them. He just beeped the car, pocketed the keys, patted his pocket to feel his phone, and caught up to Sirius and took his hand as they walked across the parking lot.Â
It was early in the morning, the gondola would be just starting up. They planned their visits to touristy places for the least busy time of day. A good half hour had been spent signing autographs at the Calgary airport when they arrived a few days ago. Canadians knew their hockey players, especially ones who would certainly be on the next Canadian Olympic hockey team. Neither of them minded , per se, but also if they could blend in, well theyâd rather prefer that option.Â
Typical outdoorsy MEC outfits like every other tourist were their outfits, with a pretty generic blue ball cap for Sirius, and Remus had chosen a fashionable flat brim hat after Sirius had gone silent and staring when Remus had tried it on in the store. While any claim they had to disguise was low, their main hope was that most of the people who rode a gondola on a Thursday morning wouldnât also be hockey fans. Banff had been great so far, busy streets of tourists to blend into while eating elephant ears, a hike yesterday to lakes the most fucking amazing color of turquoise where everyone nodded their head and said hello as they passed on the trail, and today they were heading up the gondola. It was a warm July day and Remus knew heat would start to gather soon, but it felt so fresh here in the mountains, always a breeze, really it was nearly idyllic. Even here, in a busy parking lot, dozens of cars already and pavement for hundreds of meters, it still somehow felt rustic. That was the influence of the towering rough mountains he supposed. They were everywhere here, he had never been in the mountains like this. He squeezed Siriusâ hand as they walked, his head turning to take it all in.Â
âThe view doesnât get old, eh,â Sirius laughed as he took in Remusâ wide eyes.Â
âLiterally never. Thereâs just mountains everywhere .â
âAnd here we go, up another one,â Sirius said.Â
âCanât wait,â Remus said, squeezing Siriusâ hand with excitement again, taking in the grey of Siriusâ eyes and comparing it to the grey of the mountains. The mountains were undeniably majestic, but that blue grey gaze was still his overall first place favourite.
Remus scanned the tickets on his phone for the agent with the usual âbonjour, helloâ passed between them and joined the small line of people waiting to board the gondolas. They wound through the roped off area, back and forth across the loading area as the line moved, reading the information placards as they went. Remus challenged himself to read the French versions and asked Sirius for help with some words, just to hear him say them, to see Siriusâ eyes smile when he heard Remus say the words back as best he could. They passed the time in the line quickly like this, passing words in French back and forth to each other quietly, almost like bubbles of love being traded between them, like emotional kisses, like whatever the sounds are that are in my mouth, they always mean I love you.Â
Remus vaguely knew from the corners of his attention that the people who worked for the Park were working with the line, fitting groups together into gondolas in the most space efficient way, calling for single riders to come join groups of 3, putting two couples together, keeping kids with their parents. There was a large family ahead of them and Sirius and Remus had been half-hearing conversations about snacks and who would sit by who and whereâs my water bottle and dad, what if we see a bear ?? So when the attendant called, ânext group of two? Un groupe de deux?â looks travelled down the family and passed like dominos to Sirius and Remus.Â
âOn est deux,â Sirius said, knowing everyone who worked for the Park spoke at least some French, and he was loving using it at every opportunity.
âAllez, on y va,â the attendant said, waving them over. Sirius and Remus kept their hands clasped as they snuck past the big family, Remus murmured an, âope, sorry,â as they made their way to the front of the line. They boarded the open gondola, sitting down on one side together as the doors slid closed and the gondola started moving.
Remus was just starting to look out the floor to ceiling window, seeing the expanse of nature below them, all around them once they were past the loading area of the building, when he heard,
âSirius Black?? â
Oh shit. They were on a gondola with a fan. Well, hopefully a fan, god, imagine if it was someone who wanted to lecture them for the whole 8 minute ride. Sirius would give them his stony cold game face, and inevitably the person would back down, but it would be so awkward.
But Sirius hadnât said anything. He was just staring, mouth slightly open. Time passed in frozen silence, enough time that Remus darted his eyes back and forth, from Siriusâ frozen form, to the two girls sitting across from them. One had a ball cap on with a dark ponytail floating out the back of it and her tank top showed clearly well developed biceps and deltoids, hiking shorts and shoes. She was nearly as slack jawed as Sirius. The other girl was much more fashionable, in pants that were somehow loose but still fitted, and a cropped shirt (sports bra? what did Remus know about womenâs fashion), clean white runners, long curly blond hair pulled into a messy half bun. It was still Banff and hiking appropriate except everything about her outfit and hair seemed to be on purpose in a way that none of the rest of them could claim. She seemed to be trying to read the situation as much as Remus was, and after long seconds she was the one to break the silence.Â
âRebecca? You know him?âÂ
The other girl, Rebecca? Almost literally shook herself out of her surprise and laughed, a smile coming over her face.Â
âOh my god, what are the fucking chances? Yeah, well, I mean, Sirius and I, well, yeah, weâve met.â
Remus felt his eyebrows raise at her faltering tone and he looked to Sirius who didnât seem ready to say words of any language yet. So Remus spoke first.Â
âOh, well hello. Iâm Remus. Itâs nice to meet you,â and he put his hand out to Rebecca to shake. She smiled more, her eyes taking him in and she took his hand.Â
âHi Remus, Iâm Rebecca. Nice to meet you. This is my girlfriend Claire,â she said, gesturing at the well dressed girl. âWeâre just touring the area, on vacation, I guess you must be too. It is the offseason I guess? I canât believe weâre on the same gondola as you, what even is this.â
Remus felt himself relax, girlfriend, ok so they werenât in for an 8 minute lecture. That was something at least. He turned to Claire and shook her hand too. His eyes travelled up and down her tattooed arms, all thin lines and curling shapes. He especially noticed a beautiful one of a star surrounded by a circle on the inside of her elbow, but the whole thing was made of flowers and vines in light colours.
âNice to meet you too Claire. Are yâall hockey fans then?â he asked, glancing repeatedly at Sirius, who was still seemingly frozen. He pressed his palm against Siriusâ thigh, hoping to ground him with touch. Feeling more than a little bit like he needed that too.
Claire laughed, a high, bright sound.Â
âNo, I canât say I am. Is that how you know him, sweetheart?â Claire asked her girlfriend.Â
âI, um, well yeah, kind of. We met at a media weekend where they were doing stories on a bunch of athletes for a magazine,â Rebecca explained, her gaze bounced between Sirius, Remus, her girlfriend, back to Sirius.
Remus nodded. Well that made sense. What didnât make sense was that Sirius hadnât said a single fucking word. He turned toward him, angling his body towards his husband so he could mouth as much as say, âça va, baby?âÂ
Sirius started bobbing his head. Remus saw him take two purposeful breaths, close his eyes for a long moment, and then open them again with his media smile on.
âDĂ©solĂ©, sorry, sorry Rebeccca. You just surprised me,â he took off his hat, ran his hands through his hair and replaced the hat. âWow, yeah, itâs good to see you. Like you said, what are the chances?âÂ
âWhat media thing was it that you did?â Remus asked lightly, hoping to soften whatever the fuck this atmosphere was.Â
âThat one in New York that Pots and I went to? During your third season with the team, I think?â Sirius said. He looked deep into Remusâ eyes and took and squeezed his hand. Remus didnât know why Sirius needed comfort, but he clearly did. So he scooted as close to Sirius as he could on the bench, held his hand, and tried to send comfort like osmosis. It seemed Sirius may have received the offering because he seemed to relax a degree or two.Â
âRebecca was on the olympic rugby team that got a medal at that olympics a few years ago,â Sirius supplied, gesturing to her. âOr maybe you still play?â
âYeah, I do actually!â she replied. âIâm not a starter anymore, but I still have one more Olympics in me. The team has been doing so awesome, itâs been such an sweet ride.â
âOh wow, that's amazing!â Remus said, meaning it, and hoping to take the conversation in safer territory. âAre you on a break from training right now? Being a tourist for a bit?â
âYeah! Itâs so beautiful out here. And itâs nice to have time to take in the sights. We travel for matches all the time, but itâs never very long in one place. We played a match near here last season, and it was so beautiful I knew I needed to bring Claire back here.â She smiled at her girlfriend and took her hand.Â
âSo youâre a hockey player?â Claire asked Sirius. He smiled a small smile and nodded, maybe started to say more while gripping Remusâ hand, but Claire continued, âthatâs nice, but you two obviously slept together, right?â she said, gesturing between Rebecca and Sirius.
Rebecca just laughed, Siriusâ mouth dropped open, and Remus startled like heâd been shocked.
âThatâs what this weird vibe is?!â he asked Sirius, half laughing, half horrified. âOh my god, well, I get it now.â
Sirius dropped his head into both his hands, shaking his head, and then his shoulders were shaking, until his whole body was quivering with laughter.Â
âMon dieu, sorry, Rebecca⊠Re, Iâm sorry.â Laughter bubbled out of him. âI donât know why I locked up, I got thrown back in time there for a minute, in my head. Iâm ok now, sorry. Rebecca, it really is good to see you, I just was so surprised.â
Remus just shook his head. Heâd be pretty shocked in the same situation too. The air already felt clearer, Siriusâ laughter had dissipated most of the awkwardness.Â
âSo youâre bi too then?â Rebecca asked. âOr pan maybe? I saw you two in the news of course, oh god I didnât mean to bring that up, I just mean, obviously youâre married now! Congratulations,â she seemed to force herself to stop talking and Remus laughed.Â
âYeah, we got married last summer, it was amazing.â
Sirius smiled at him, the smile they always had when they thought about the lake house and their friends and family and the perfect haze of happy memories that surrounded that day. Sirius took a deep breath and turned to Rebecca.
âYeah! But, um, no. Uh, Iâm actually gay. Thatâs probably why I froze up there for a minute. But if youâre queer too that makes me feel a lot better, I think I panicked for a second that there would be flirting? Sorry, sorry.â he said, looking back and forth between both Rebecca and Claire.
Claire laughed, âOh there could still be flirting, Iâm afraid. Youâre just her type in guys. Iâm gay too, but my sweetheart here had a later in life bi awakening, much to my benefit.â She got closer and closer to Rebeccaâs neck as she said this, and ended with a soft kiss to her jaw. Rebecca smiled a soft smile at her girlfriend, but then turned to Sirius, more serious.Â
âWow, so, um, that night must have been hard for you then? I feel like I should apologise. I think I kissed you first that night.â
Sirius shrugged his shoulders like his shirt was too tight, and Remus studied his reaction, taking his hand in both of his now, and drew circles in Siriusâ palm with his thumb. Sirius rubbed the back of his head with his other hand before answering.Â
âNo, please donât apologise. You couldnât know, I didnât know. Well I knew, but I didnât know . Itâs not like you were the only girl I was with. I thought I just had to meet the right girl. And actually you helped with that, because you were so amazing. Beautiful, and fun to be around, and athletic and funny. And it was still⊠fine.â Rebecca laughed and faked hitting her heart with her fist like a stab. âNo, I donât mean it was bad! It was fine! Shit I keep saying fine⊠it wasâŠâ Sirius trailed off, looking to Remus, clearly now developing an aversion to the word fine.Â
âSirius, Sirius, itâs ok. I get it. The comphet comes for us all, doesnât it?â Rebecca said. She started off half laughing, but her voice was full of authenticity by the end of her sentence.Â
Remus kept running his thumb over Siriusâ palm in soothing circles, and Claire lifted her arm up to trace the edge of the window, and then put it around Rebeccaâs shoulders, hugging her close.Â
In the moment of silence that followed, the gondola slowly swung to stop. They all looked around, looking down at the magnificent view really for the first time since they got on the thing.Â
âHuh, they must be stopping it to help someone on or off, I guess,â Remus said. A shiver had come over him as they swung to a stop, but it passed. The others nodded in acknowledgment as they swayed gently.Â
âYou were my last,â Sirius said into the silence. âMy last time with ⊠with a woman.â Remus raised his eyebrows at Sirius. âWell, I kissed other girls after that, only in public, but I knew after that night with you that I wanted to be with guys. Even if I didnât let myself actually do that for a long time yet, at least I knew.â He paused. âSorry,â he said again.
Rebecca laughed. âHonestly Black, it really is ok, stop apologising. Iâm a little surprised, for sure, because for me it was really good. Like, really good. Like I-never-found-a-guy-as-good-again good, despite giving it an honest try. Had to fully just move onto women, good. So I might be questioning my perception of reality a little bit over here, but you donât have anything to apologise for.âÂ
Remus was processing, hardly believing the turn this gondola ride had taken, but had to smile at that.
âHe is pretty good, isnât he?â Remus said, gazing up at Sirius with mischief in his eyes. âFrom our very first time, he knew what he was doing. Fuckin knocked my socks off,â Remus laughed. Rebecca joined him and Sirius buried his head in his hands again.
âRight?! His hands ââ
âGod, tell me about it. And his back?â
âDivine,â Rebecca sighed, tone half teasing and half serious. âAnd just his size, you know, when heâs on top, fully covering you?â
Remus faked a swoon, back of his hand to his forehead. âItâs amazing. Might be my favourite place in the world to be.â Sirius sat up and smacked Remusâ shoulder. âRe! Stop it,â he laughed.
âDid you get to experience his mouth?â Remus asked, leaning forwards to Rebecca. âOr how his eyes get so intense itâs like they glow?â
âRemus!â
Rebecca sighed dramatically. âI didnât experience his mouth unfortunately. And I think he must be the only man in history to have turned down a blow job! It was mostly hands and some lovely dirty talk and ⊠well, you know.â
âOh the French dirty talk,'' Remus fawned, fanning himself with his hand, smiling evilly at Sirius. âItâs so hot.â
Rebecca faked a dramatic gasp. âIs this why you wanted me on my hands and knees??â she asked, gesturing dramatically to Remus. âSo you could pretend I was him!?â The words might be accusatory, but the tone was pure glee. âDid you know him then?â she asked Remus.Â
Sirius moaned into his hands and ground out what might have sounded like kill me now.Â
âI just knew him as the hockey obsessed, tough as nails, never an emotion to be seen hockey captain back then. And I saw him make out with multiple girls at bars after that, so he clearly wasnât ready for me yet back then,â Remus teased.Â
Claire and Rebecca both nodded. âWe all have to make our journeys of self discovery in our own time, donât we,â Claire said.Â
âThat we do,â Remus said, letting the last of his laughter bubble out of him. They all took in a minute of happy silence, admiring the view. Even Sirius cautiously poked an eye out of the safety of his hands and looked past Remus to see towering snow capped mountains which they were almost eye level with up this high, this ground was really quite far away. Deep green trees transitioned into bright green grass in places, the buildings of the town looked like dots from here, and the fluffy white clouds seemed much closer than he had ever experienced before.Â
The peace of the mountains seemed to sweep into the softly swinging gondola and Rebecca turned back to Sirius, still snuggled into Claireâs side.Â
âI am sorry though, that society or whatever made you think you had to sleep with me. Iâm sorry if I played a part in that,â she said.Â
Sirius wasnât frozen like the snow tipped mountains now, he tried to let his words flow like the breeze instead.
âI appreciate that, Rebecca, I do. But I couldâve said no, and I knew that. I went upstairs with you because I thought I should want to, but I was so deep in the shoulds, that in a roundabout way I did want to. And Iâm honestly so glad you thought it was good, thatâs like all I cared about.â âI never wouldâve known you werenât into it Sirius, really, it was good.â Sirius rolled his head on his neck, looking sheepish but happy.Â
âItâs not that I didnât think it was good. It did feel good, youâre amazing. I just was also really busy, in my mind. My thoughts were just going in bad circles with pressure and doing the right thing and what you might tell your friends and what Iâd tell my teammates ⊠so of course it was harder for me to just enjoy it. But like I said, you were the last time I did that, so Iâm also really thankful for that, and for you. If you couldnât be the right one, I knew there was no point in trying anymore.â He switched his gaze to Remus and his grin turned dopey, âuntil this one told me he was gay, and that Iâd be worth it.â
Remus squeezed his hand. âYou are worth it. Every day.âÂ
âIf I may,â Claire said, âit sounds to me like youâre both right. Youâre right, my love, to feel a bit weird about learning the guy you slept with doesnât actually like sleeping with women. But itâs also ok that you still enjoyed it, because youâre always allowed to have your own version of a situation, based solely on your own experience of it. And he was actively trying to have you enjoy it, for different reasons than you thought. Thereâs no way you could have known his every inner thought.â Rebecca smiled and rested her head on her girlfriendâs shoulder.Â
âAnd you Sirius,â she continued, âit could be interpreted as misleading to have gone upstairs with her, but Rebecca and I, as women who love women, know the strength and seeping nature of comphet, as Iâm sure you do too, as a man in a traditional masculine field. It gets into your bones and bosses you around and ties your thoughts up in knots. Iâm really glad you freed yourself from expectations to let yourself live. I can tell the two of you are really good together,â she smiled.Â
Remus nodded his head along with her and kept drawing calming circles with his thumb around Siriusâ palm.Â
âMerci, Claire,â Sirius smiled, âand for what itâs worth, Rebecca, Iâm sorry for putting you in that situation.â
âForgiven, Sirius Black. And thank you for ruining me for other men, so that I could find this goddess,â she leaned up to kiss Claire on the lips, deep and sensual. Sirius thought that looked like a really great idea, and leaned in to Remus.Â
âĂa va bien, baby?â Remus repeated, their lips close, breathing each other in and out. He had been pressed up against Siriusâ side this whole conversation, clutching his hand. And now they blocked out the mountains, the uncomfortable seat, the shining sun, and only focused in on each other.Â
âOui. Je vais bien. EtonnĂ©. But ⊠also good. Glad to have you, like always.â
âIâll never be anywhere else, mon mari,â Remus murmured as he leaned in to kiss Sirius. Lost in their kiss, they didnât notice that Rebecca and Claire were watching them with soft smiles on their faces, Rebeccaâs head still against Claireâs shoulder. Claire twirled her hand around and then threaded her fingers through Rebeccaâs ponytail, smiling.Â
The gondola started moving again, startling Sirius and Remus apart with a smile. They squeezed each otherâs hands with a shiver, they both had goosebumps from a brief chill. They all rode the last few minutes how they all had thought their whole ride would go. They pointed out the tallest trees, saw shapes in the clouds, basked in the chance to be so high up and see the world from such a different perspective. Funny how that makes a difference for so many things.Â
They all saw the loading area approach, and stayed quiet while they slowed to a stop and the doors opened. They filed out into the visitors center. When they rounded the corner and were away from most other people, Rebecca folded herself into Sirius for a hug, squeezing him, her cheek pressed into his chest. He rested the side of his head against her and held her for a long moment.Â
âDespite the shock, it really was good to see you, Sirius. And super good to get to clear the air with you about our night together. I, selfishly, hope you donât regret it, but itâs ok if you do. Iâm still happy to know you. Maybe you can actually text me back now that thereâs no big secret swirling over you, eh?â she swatted him in the stomach at the last, and he dodged with an oof and a laugh.Â
âRebecca, honestly, Iâm really glad to have run into you like this. Sorry if I was weird. I donât regret it, how can I, when it was a stop on the path to me finding my husband?â
Rebecca turned and gave Remus a hug too. âSorry for having your husband before you,â she teased. Remus huffed a laugh, and hugged her back.Â
âGood to meet you Rebecca. Iâll forgive you, I suppose .â he joked. âSince Iâm the one heâs going home with, I canât complain.â
âNope, you have absolutely nothing to complain about, I would know,â Rebecca teased as she took Claireâs hand again. âAnd I have this goddess now anyways. Bye, guys, take care!â she said as they started to turn away down the boardwalk.
âEnjoy your vacation!â Claire said with a wave, and Remus and Sirius waved as well, standing with their arms around each otherâs backs. When they were a good way down the boardwalk Sirius turned and collapsed into Remusâ arms. They stood there amidst the beauty of the mountains. Tourists walked past and around them, taking pictures. They stood long enough for clouds to form and reform shapes, until Sirius could huff out a laugh. âWhat the actual fuck are the chances.â
âOf you stepping into a 6 foot square enclosed space with the last woman you had sex with? Really, really, really low Iâd imagine. Even if we changed the odds to include all the women in general who have seen you naked, the number still has to beâŠâ Remus trailed off as Sirius stood up and pushed him away, grumbling and laughing.Â
âStop teasing me, mon loup, this was traumatising ,â Sirius pouted.Â
âOh baby, I know, I know, come here,â Remus laughed, and gathered Sirius in tight for one more hug. âLetâs look around? And then we can walk down? So we donât accidentally get trapped with the next least likely person in the fucking world? I canât quite imagine who that could be at this point, but weâre probably safer on a hiking trail.â
âLetâs get trapped with your college boyfriend, and Iâll make comments about your mouth, tabarnak , that was embarrassing,â Sirius laughed under his breath as he turned to take in the view.Â
âI was trying to cut the tension!â
âIâll cut your tension,â Sirius muttered back.
âCanât wait, baby,â Remus said with a suggestive eyebrow waggle. Sirius rolled his eyes, and then they did enjoy the view, thoroughly. And they took the hiking trail back down the mountain.Â
Well hello everybody. After a 2 year gap, yes it's really been 2 years since our last holiday blog, we are back again. Having done every USA State we have now started on Canada. We are flying into Calgary, Alberta and spending a couple of days there. We are then picking up a rental car and driving through the Rockies to Vancouver. On our trip we will visit Banff National Park, Golden and Revelstoke. We then go to Kelowna to stay a few days with our niece Amy and her partner Andrew. We are all then heading to Whistler for a week before they drop us off at Vancouver for a few days. We are away for 25 days and hope to see some beautiful scenery on the way and fall foliage. Our holiday was in some doubt as we were flying with Air Canada but their pilots were in a pay dispute with the Airline. Although being offered a 30% pay rise they turned it down and we had a situation where the pilots could go on strike from midnight on Sunday 15th Sept, and the airline were threatening to close down all flights from the same date. We were due to fly on the 16th. Thankfully an agreement was reached at the last moment. We were able to fly, Yaaaaaay. The pilots got 42% pay rise over 4 years, lucky them.
;; Something Old Chapter One of Just Me & You for @wyattjohnston
Table of Contents Playlist «« đ€Â »» Chapter Two
Summary: Charlotte returns to the cabin for the first time in years for the wedding of her childhood friend Daphne and her future husband AHL Captain of the Belleville Senators: Dillon Hetherington. Word Count: 2,000+
â-get the map out of the glove box.â
It had been an order, not a suggestion. Unlike the cool breeze that had blown in through the passenger side window, tempers were rising as the car carried them down the winding roads of the provincial highway. For kilometers now, the scene had gone unchanged. The road was lined with thick, towering trees, and in the distance on the skyline the towering silhouettes of the mountains - and while it was all so familiar to Charlotte, and she was sure they had been on the right path her boyfriend, Wesley, thought otherwise.Â
They had been together five long years, and not once had Wesley entertained the idea of going out to the lake. He was a city boy through and through, with his car never traveling more than thirty minutes out of the city limits of Calgary. Hell, it still hadnât. They were in a rental.Â
âI donât think this thing has a map, what about the GPS on your phone?â Charlotte sighed as she pulled her feet down from where she had propped them up on the dashboard.Â
âI donât have phone reception in the middle of fucking nowhere, Charlotte.â
Leaning forward, her body strained against the restriction of her seatbelt. Her back was slick with sweat as the heat of her body had not paired well with the leather seats Wes had insisted on getting during the peak of the summer heat. Careful fingers carded and sifted through the almost empty glove box. Her freshly manicured fingertips toyed with the edge of the leasing agreement for a moment before spotting a faded and tattered map buried beneath the clutter of business cards. Pinching it between her fingers she pulled it from the box and held it up almost triumphantly, but Wesâs eyes were focused on the road ahead of them with a heavy scowl consuming his face.Â
The flutter of the map as it was unfolded, only seemed to irritate him further as he let out an exasperated sigh and his grip around the steering wheel tightened. The noise only intensified further as the map was challenged by the gust of air that had kept the temperature of the car tolerable.Â
âJesus Christ, Charlotte, close the damn window,â Wesley groaned out, but before her hand could leave the flimsy paper of the map, his hand had left the wheel and had fallen on the buttons of the power windows. With the buzz of the window going closed, the humid heat of the car returned, but with it too came silence. In that silence, they found their calm.Â
Charlotte traced her fingers around the familiar route that she had driven almost every summer since she was a child. From Calgary to the cabin the drive had been pretty straightforward and was no more than an hour and a half worth of driving, but for someone like Wes who had never taken the route before Charlotte was sure it felt agonizingly long. Tapping their destination on the map, Charlotte looked up and to Wesley who waited impatiently in the driver's seat for instruction.Â
âSo how fucked are we?â His words left her eyes rolling.Â
âWe arenât fucked,â she countered him, âweâre almost there. Thereâs going to be a dirt road on the right. Itâll take us out to the cabin.â
âDirt road,â he scoffed, his words falling into a mumble she could hear even while sitting beside him, âwhen we get married, weâre not doing it all the way out here.â
Charlotte almost laughed, her gaze cast out the window to watch the trees roll on by. It was always when we get married as if she already wore a ring on her finger, but Wesley had yet to propose - and after being together for so long, Charlotte was beginning to think he may never. Though, that was never something she would ever admit to him or anyone. Instead, she let herself fall into the reassurance of him having said when, because when meant it would happen one day.Â
âWhatâs wrong with the lake? Itâs beautiful out here, intimate. I really do think youâll end up liking it, Wes,â she encouraged, her hand reaching out to rest on the strength of his thigh.Â
Wesley wasnât convinced.Â
âYou really expect everyone to make the drive all the way out here?â he cast her a glance, his dark brow raising, âto deal with the bugs, the smell of shit-â He ranted on, listing everything he could possibly hate about the rural expanse of land Alberta offered. It only worsened when Charlotte directed him to turn onto the dirt road and he was greeted by the rumble of stones against the body of the car and the embrace of its uneven surface beneath the tires, âthis is going to destroy the goddamn car.â
âHey, weâre almost there, itâs fine,â Charlotte assured, her fingers giving his thigh a reassuring squeeze, âthe company had my card on file, if anything happens to the car Iâve got it covered. Iâm the reason weâre coming all the way out here anyway.â
âItâll be the first and last time I make this drive for you,â Wesleyâs words were almost enough to have her recoiling. There was an annoyance in his tone, one that left her chest heavy with guilt as the bumpy road rocked her like a cradle in its embrace.Â
âI think youâll change your mind by the end of the weekend,â Charlotte kept her confidence as she retracted her hand from his lap and left her eyes to focus on the road ahead.Â
Beyond the seemingly never-ending thick of trees that lined the way, the road soon opened its mouth to the driveway. It was narrow and looped to the front of the lakefront cabin that had been the very foundation of her childhood summers - and while it had recently received a fresh coat of paint it was all unchanged. The front porch still stood strong, the swing where her grandmother once sat with her dear friend still coasted in the gentle summer breeze, and when she looked up she could still see the same curtains hanging in the bedroom she had once called her own.Â
The only difference was the cars that lined the driveway. It was no longer lined with pickup trucks or station wagons, but instead rental cars and the cars that could only come with the luxury of making multiple million dollars a year - the wealth that came with playing professionally in the world of hockey.Â
âTheyâre already here!â Charlotte spoke with great excitement as her hand went to the seatbelt, unbuckling it before the car could come to a complete stop.Â
She made a mess of the map as she shoved it back into the glove box, and the moment she heard the locks disengage she was out the door. Charlotteâs Converse kicked up the dirt of the driveway as she left the car and Wesley behind her. She navigated around every flower bed, and up the steps, like she had done many times before, and didnât stop until she was forced to in the entryway. It had been a collision that had stilled her, the thick, athletic body of the groom to be almost enough to knock the wind out of her.Â
Dillion Heatherington, was an intimidating guy if you hadnât gotten the pleasure of knowing him further than his career on the ice. After years of being traded and bouncing around the American Hockey League, with brief stints in the National Hockey League, he had solidified himself a place as the Captain of the Bellville Senators. He was known for his leadership and mentorship over the younger players who would ultimately go on to play for the Ottawa Senators, he was also the occasional tough guy - but Charlotte had known him long before that. She could still remember the lanky teenager he had been when he had been drafted to the Swift Current Broncos. She could still remember the first time she had met him and he had stolen her best friendâs heart.Â
âAlright, where is she?â Charlotte was quick to speak as she placed a friendly pat against his chest.Â
âItâs nice to see you too, Charlie,â Dillion laughed, his hands coming down to steady her on her feet.Â
âYouâve kept her away from me for too long Heatherington,â Charlotte spoke quickly, brushing off the nickname she tried to abandon almost a decade ago, âyou think Iâd let you get away with stealing her away from me ag-â
âCHARLIE!â her name was a shriek that echoed off the walls of the entryway and drew her eyes up to the staircase that led up to the cabinâs second story.Â
At first, it was a face she did not recognize, but as the feminine figure made her way down the steps with an elegant stride it quickly became clear who had called out to her.Â
âHoly shit, Daphne?â Charlotte gawked, abandoning her friendâs fiancĂ© by the front door as she opened her arms to her childhood friend, âwhat did they do to you in Bellville?â
It hadnât been an outlandish question to ask when the modelesque woman in front of her. Daphne no longer looked like she had when she first left Calgary at twenty-three. This shouldnât have surprised Charlotte, they had kept in touch via social media over the years, but the daily Instagram updates didnât do Daphneâs transformation justice. Her once fiery red hair, which had always been an eyecatcher and her signature look, was now dyed blonde. She was dressed head to toe in designer labels, wearing white as she would be all weekend, and her makeup was done to perfection as if she had a personal makeup artist to follow her from one place to the next. She was the epitome of the perfect bride. The epitome of a hockey wife. Though she wasnât one. Not yet, though that would change by the end of the weekend.Â
âYou mean besides finally getting this bloke to propose?â Daphne was grinning wide as she thrust out her left hand to show off the rock of a ring on her finger.Â
Charlotte had seen the ring only twice before. Once on the video call she had used to make the announcement, and her social media post that followed, but the ring was even more impressive in person. âNo wonder you waited to get the C before popping the question,â Charlotte teased as she took her friend's hand in both of her own carefully, âyouâve got good taste.â
âOh no, Dilly let me pick it out,â Daphne corrected with a smile, her own eyes fixated on the impressive diamond on her finger. âHeâs so busy during the season with all games and the travel I think Iâm lucky he was there to propose at all,â she added, her tone teasing as she peered around Charlotte, âspeaking of missing men, when am I finally going to meet Wesley?â
Charlotte cursed as she looked back towards the door, her eyes going wide as she reached for the handle, âI left him in the car!â She was almost laughing as she drew open the handle, Daphne walking out behind her as she moved out onto the porch.Â
Wesley had parked the car in the drive away and had been grabbing the bags, but it had been abandoned for a phone call as he stood with his back to the house and his phone to his ear. He must have finally gotten reception with the skies clear of any trees around the house.Â
âWes!â she called out to him, her tone beckoning as she took a stride down the step only to stop when he raised a hand up. Silencing her without having to look at her. Her tone dropped as she looked back to Daphne, a forced smile on her lips, âit must be a work call. Heâs got a big business deal heâs been trying to closeâŠâ
Her own words began to trail as Charlotteâs attention had become captured by the rumbling of another vehicle making its way down the drive. With all the cars that had been in the driveway, she hadnât expected anyone else so her curiosity was peaked. She cast Daphne a quick glance, her dark brow raising at the sight of the large jeep as it rolled into the last vacancy on the lot as if to ask: Who else are you expecting? But Daphne made no effort to answer. Instead, she looked away in an attempt to hide the guilt that flooded her features.Â
Moving down the steps, Charlotte followed the same path she had taken to get to the front door, but this time her steps were a little less calculated as she stumbled into the flower bed just to get a good look at the license plate. The Manitoba license plate.Â
Her stomach fell, her mouth growing dry at the sight of the driverâs side door opening. It was from there, standing among the colorful perennials her grandmother once planted, she watched as an all too familiar figure stepped from the front seat and towered over anything and anyone nearby. He disappeared back into the car with his back to her for only a moment as he grabbed his bag, giving her a glimmer of hope that maybe she was imagining it all, but a symphony of barks from the golden retriever that bolted from the back seat brought her back to her grim reality. It was Adam, and he was undoubtedly Dillonâs best man.Â
In this post, we'll explore the main factors that influence living costs, give you a breakdown of common expenses, and provide practical advice on how to stretch your budget further.
II. Factors Influencing the Cost of Living in Canada
When considering your study abroad experience in Canada, itâs essential to understand what factors affect the overall cost of living. Hereâs a closer look at some of the key influences:
1. Location: City vs. Rural Areas
One of the biggest factors in determining your living costs is where you'll be living. Major Canadian cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal tend to have higher living costs due to their popularity and the demand for housing. Renting in Toronto, for instance, can be expensive, especially near universities.
On the other hand, smaller towns and cities tend to have lower rent prices and overall expenses. Cities like Ottawa, Calgary, and Winnipeg offer more affordable living while still providing access to great universities and employment opportunities. Rural areas also provide more affordable living options, but you may need to travel further to access university services or entertainment.
2. Lifestyle Choices
Your personal preferences will also play a significant role in your budget. Are you someone who enjoys dining out often or prefer cooking at home? Do you rely on public transport or own a car? These factors can greatly influence how much you spend each month. Adopting a simpler, more frugal lifestyle can significantly reduce your overall costs.
3. Exchange Rates and Currency Fluctuations
Depending on your home countryâs currency, exchange rates can have a significant impact on the cost of living. Itâs essential to keep an eye on exchange rate fluctuations and plan your finances accordingly. Being strategic about when to exchange your currency or using international banking apps that offer lower conversion fees can help mitigate some of these costs.
III. Breakdown of Living Costs in Canada
Now that we've covered the main factors affecting the cost of living, letâs take a closer look at the specific expenses youâre likely to incur while studying in Canada.
1. Housing and Accommodation
Housing is likely to be your most significant monthly expense. On-campus housing is often more convenient but may come with a higher price tag. Off-campus rentals tend to be cheaper, but they can vary widely in price depending on the city and location.
Toronto and Vancouver: Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can range from CAD 1,500 to CAD 2,500 per month. Outside the city center, prices drop to about CAD 1,200 to CAD 1,800.
Montreal and Ottawa: Rent in these cities is more affordable. You can expect to pay CAD 800 to CAD 1,200 for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center.
Smaller Cities or Towns: Rent prices can be much lower, ranging from CAD 600 to CAD 1,000 per month.
Additionally, be mindful of utility costs, which can add another CAD 100 to CAD 150 per month. Internet bills typically range from CAD 50 to CAD 80.
2. Food and Groceries
How much you spend on food will depend on whether you prefer cooking at home or eating out. On average, a student can expect to spend around CAD 300 to CAD 600 per month on groceries. Cooking your meals at home is a more affordable option, while dining out will increase your expenses.
Dining Out: A meal at an inexpensive restaurant can cost between CAD 10 to CAD 20.
Cooking at Home: Basic grocery items like vegetables, pasta, rice, and meat can be found at major supermarkets for reasonable prices, but avoid imported items which may be more expensive.
3. Transportation
Canadaâs public transportation systems are well-developed, with most major cities offering buses, trains, and subways. A monthly transportation pass will cost around CAD 80 to CAD 130, depending on the city.
If you plan to drive, remember that car ownership comes with additional expenses like insurance, gas, and maintenance. The average cost of car insurance in Canada is around CAD 100 to CAD 200 per month, though it can be higher for younger drivers.
4. Healthcare and Insurance
Healthcare in Canada is publicly funded, but as an international student, you may need to purchase private health insurance. This insurance typically costs between CAD 600 to CAD 1,000 per year, depending on the province and the coverage.
Check with your university to see what insurance options are available or whether youâre eligible for provincial healthcare coverage.
5. Personal Expenses and Entertainment
Youâll also want to budget for personal and entertainment costs. This can include everything from movie tickets (around CAD 12 to CAD 20) to gym memberships (CAD 30 to CAD 60 per month). If you enjoy traveling, Canadaâs vast nature provides opportunities for exploration, but transportation costs for these adventures can add up.
6. Miscellaneous Costs
Other expenses youâll incur as a student may include phone bills (around CAD 30 to CAD 50 per month) and study materials such as textbooks (CAD 100 to CAD 300 per semester).
IV. Tuition Fees and Scholarships
While the cost of living is an important part of your study abroad budget, tuition fees will be a major consideration.
Tuition Fees for International Students
Tuition fees for international students in Canada vary widely depending on the program and institution. On average, you can expect to pay between CAD 7,000 to CAD 29,000 per year for undergraduate programs and between CAD 7,000 to CAD 45,000 for graduate programs.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
To help offset the cost of studying abroad, many universities in Canada offer scholarships and financial aid for international students. These scholarships can be merit-based or need-based and can range from partial to full tuition coverage.
Additionally, working part-time during your studies (up to 20 hours per week) can help cover living expenses. Many students also take advantage of co-op programs that allow them to earn while gaining professional experience.
V. How to Save Money While Studying in Canada
Now that you have a good idea of what to expect in terms of costs, letâs explore some practical ways to save money while studying abroad in Canada.
Budgeting Tips for Students
Start by setting a realistic budget that includes all your expected income and expenses. Track your spending regularly to avoid surprises. Using apps like Mint or YNAB (You Need a Budget) can help you stay on top of your finances.
Finding Discounts and Deals
Take advantage of student discounts available through student cards, transit passes, and online platforms like UNiDAYS. You can get discounts on everything from groceries to movie tickets to fashion.
Living Smart: Tips to Cut Costs
Cook at Home: Instead of dining out, cook meals in bulk to save money.
Shop Smart: Shop for groceries at affordable stores like Walmart or No Frills, and buy in bulk when possible.
Take Advantage of Free Activities: Many cities offer free events, outdoor activities, and museums with free entry.
VI. Cost of Living by City: A Detailed Comparison
Toronto
Known for its vibrant culture and large international student population, Toronto is also one of Canadaâs most expensive cities. Rent in the downtown area can be steep, but if you're willing to live further away from the city center, you'll find more affordable options.
Vancouver
Vancouver offers a beautiful setting with access to outdoor activities, but the cost of living is high. Rent is pricey, but if you find shared housing or live outside the downtown core, you can lower your costs.
Montreal
Montreal is known for being more affordable compared to Toronto and Vancouver. The city has a European vibe and offers great value for international students. Rent prices are lower, and food and transportation costs are more manageable.
Other Cities
Cities like Calgary, Ottawa, and Quebec City offer a great balance of affordability and amenities. These cities have lower rent and living costs while still providing access to excellent educational institutions.
Studying abroad in Canada is a fantastic opportunity, but itâs essential to plan your finances carefully. Understanding the cost of living will help you create a budget, find ways to save, and ensure a smooth experience. By considering your location, lifestyle, and potential expenses, youâll be able to manage your finances effectively and make the most of your time in Canada.
Planning Group Trips? Discover the Benefits of Renting a Charter Bus
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/000ef01b54c6eb04dcd75edbb49830e8/51380c5216b6ea41-92/s540x810/c0f7e56bd8d1c729e0b5e8a75fc1a77711b359bb.jpg)
Group travel is an exciting way to create unforgettable memories, whether youâre organizing a family reunion, a corporate retreat, or a school trip. But when it comes to planning the logistics of transporting a large group of people, the process can quickly become overwhelming. Fortunately, renting a charter bus can offer a seamless solution to all your travel needs.
In this blog, weâll explore the benefits of renting a charter bus for your next group trip and why choosing the right bus rental service, like those offered by Go Coach Charters, can make all the difference in your journey.
Why Choose a Charter Bus for Group Travel?
Organizing group transportation is often a challenge. While you might consider multiple cars or rental vehicles, this approach can lead to confusion, missed connections, and added stress. A charter bus offers a more organized and convenient option for groups traveling together. Here are some key benefits:
1. Comfort and Convenience When you rent a charter bus, your group will experience a higher level of comfort compared to other forms of transportation. Coach buses are equipped with comfortable seating, ample legroom, air conditioning, and even restrooms on some models. Whether youâre traveling from Edmonton to Calgary or Fort Saskatchewan, the ride will be relaxing, allowing everyone to arrive at their destination refreshed and ready to enjoy the trip.
2. Stress-Free Travel One of the main benefits of renting a charter bus is that it eliminates the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads, dealing with traffic, and finding parking spaces. With a professional driver behind the wheel, your group can focus on enjoying the journey rather than worrying about logistics. Whether youâre taking a short trip to Fort Saskatchewan or a longer journey to Calgary, your driver will handle the road while you sit back and relax.
3. Cost-Effective Option When you consider the cost of gas, parking fees, and potential tolls for multiple cars, renting a charter bus becomes a more affordable option for group travel. Charter bus services often offer competitive pricing that can save your group money, especially when youâre traveling long distances. The price of a coach bus rental is typically divided among the passengers, making it a budget-friendly solution for large groups.
4. Eco-Friendly Travel Renting a charter bus in Edmonton is an environmentally friendly choice. Rather than having multiple cars driving separately, a single bus can transport a large group, reducing the number of vehicles on the road. This reduction in traffic and emissions helps to minimize your groupâs carbon footprint, making it a more sustainable choice for group travel.
Charter Bus vs. Other Transportation Options
While there are several transportation options available, including cars, trains, and airplanes, a 56-passenger charter bus offers distinct advantages over these alternatives. Hereâs how a coach bus compares to other modes of travel:
Air Travel: Airplanes are fast, but they can be expensive, especially for larger groups. When you add in the cost of luggage, airport transfers, and security lines, the price quickly increases. A charter bus rental is a more cost-effective and hassle-free option for short to medium distances.
Trains: Trains offer a scenic ride but often come with strict schedules and limited routes. A coach bus rental provides greater flexibility, allowing your group to set its own schedule and make stops along the way if needed.
Personal Vehicles: Driving in multiple cars can be stressful and disorganized. Renting a charter bus ensures that everyone travels together, reducing the chances of getting lost or delayed. Plus, it eliminates the need for multiple drivers, making it a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Popular Destinations for Charter Bus Trips
Charter buses are ideal for a variety of group trips, from weekend getaways to corporate events and large family gatherings. Here are some popular destinations for charter bus travel:
Edmonton to Calgary: A charter bus from Edmonton to Calgary offers a convenient and comfortable way to explore these two major cities in Alberta. Whether you're visiting for a concert, a sporting event, or a special celebration, a charter bus can get your group there in style.
Fort Saskatchewan Day Trips: If you're planning a local excursion from Fort Saskatchewan, renting a coach bus is a perfect option for group transportation. Visit nearby attractions, go on a nature tour, or plan a team-building activity with the ease of a dedicated bus rental.
Corporate Retreats: A coach bus rental is an excellent choice for corporate events and retreats. It allows employees to travel together and fosters a sense of camaraderie. Whether you're heading to a conference or a team-building retreat, renting a bus makes group travel more efficient and enjoyable.
Family Vacations: When it comes to family vacations, comfort is key. Renting a charter bus ensures that your family can travel together without worrying about directions, parking, or separate vehicles. It's also a great way to keep the kids entertained during the ride with onboard amenities and plenty of space.
What to Look for in a Charter Bus Rental Service
When booking a charter bus in Calgary or any other location, itâs important to choose a reliable and reputable service. Here are a few factors to consider:
Safety Record: Ensure that the company you choose has a strong safety record. They should be licensed and insured, with well-maintained buses and experienced drivers.
Fleet Options: Look for a company with a diverse fleet of buses to meet your needs. Whether you need a smaller coach bus for a short trip or a 56-passenger charter bus for a large group, the company should offer the appropriate vehicles.
Amenities: Check to see what amenities are available on the buses. Features such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, and restrooms can enhance the comfort of your journey.
Customer Service: Choose a company that prioritizes customer service. A responsive team that is easy to communicate with will make your booking process smooth and stress-free.
Today we head for Banff. I was up early and caught the bus to the airport at 8am to pick up our car rental. Result - taxi on Monday to our hotel $50, bus fare to airport $3.75 and I got to look at the view.
Car collected, a Jeep Grand Cherokee no less, back to the hotel collect Bern and on our way.
Heading g west out of Calgary the land started flat but very soon we started to hit the foothills of the Rockies with jagged peaks in the distance. It's only about 35 miles and soon we were entering the Rockies.
