other people sharing their takes in the notes so i wanna expand on this one hehe

in my humble onion, the most obvious sin of ofmd s2 is that it took the 'found family' ensemble cast that propelled it into popularity and completely rewrote all of them to seemingly fit better into fanfic tropes?? i really do think this is a direct result of the writers, the actors, the cast at large being WAY TOO active in the fandom (specifically on twitter) and therefore they seemed to write the show thinking that what the fandom was talking about was what viewers would actually want to see in the finished s2. which is where we get stuff like mermaid-stede, izzy suddenly being a poor little meow meow when the last time we saw him he was torturing these guys, all the less popular characters being effectively turned into set dressing, izzy singing la vie en rose while in drag, jim's new girlfriend for the ppl wondering where the women were in the show, izzy suddenly being the main character, ed and stede making up by the third episode, izzy, etc, etc

are any of these bad ideas on paper? not really! i'd probably read a fanfic with this stuff in it. but when i watch a tv show i don't want it to be fanfic, i want it to be a good story that THEN good fanfic comes from. i did see that they had their budget cut and the season shortened so im sure they weren't working in optimal conditions but idk i feel like they banked too much on the idea that anything with gay people in it is inherently good because a lot of the popularity season 1 saw was from people excited about a goofy gay pirate show that they decided to just ramp the queerness up to 1000 instead of like. writing a well rounded season. sad!

(also lemme just say it didn't feel awesome to have almost every non-white character in the show from s1 be effectively shunted off to the side to give izzy more spotlight but.......c'est la vie)

tl;dr i think every showrunner should have twitter forcibly deleted off their phones

has enough time passed for me to say that i think the reason s2 of ofmd was Like That was because the writers fucked up and listened to the fandom
