He ignores it completely, instead asking one of his own.  “Remember I, uh, remember I told you about my brother?” He’s having a bit of trouble getting the words out at all, like his brain’s slowed down, grinding and jolting its way through the desired speech.  Her frown deepens and when she speaks she sounds completely lost as to the potential relevance of what, to her, sounds like a left-field flyball of a tangent. “The one you haven’t spoken to in…” “About twenty-five years? Yes, that one.” Still not looking at her, Patrick indicates the young man they’re about to interview. “His last name - it wouldn’t be MacGyver, is it?” “Yes, actually.” Lisbon flips open the case folder, scanning it for his full name. “Angus MacGyver. How did you know that? I know it’s not because you were paying attention when the officer was giving me the rundown.” “You’re right, I wasn’t,” Patrick admits instantly. “But there’s one thing I know for certain, and it’s that that boy is the spitting image of James, so either my brother got in a time machine, came back here in his early twenties, and gave us a fake first name, or I’ve got a nephew nobody told me about.”

had to go looking for this again because I just realized that Dragon Age Keep also realizes this problem??? and does nothing about it???

it lists Alistair’s birthdate as 9:10 Dragon

and also mentions that the Grey Wardens were finally allowed back in Ferelden in the same year

(which. all right. the Wardens came, Fiona and Maric met, Alistair was born 9 months later, all in the same calendar year)

BUT THEN

it lists the events of The Calling as taking place in 9:14 Dragon

even though I’m pretty sure that the Wardens’ visit to him at the beginning of the book was their first official return to the country, and it makes no sense for these two things to be placed 4 years apart on the timeline. maybe you could argue that Maric officially lifted the ban in 9:10, and they just didn’t have any business that brought them to Ferelden until 9:14.

but that still doesn’t answer how Alistair fits.

I’ve been trying to finagle the numbers since I made this post originally, and so i had the idea, which I assumed is what everyone was going with, that maybe you could argue the “14 years” is referencing the Beginning of The Stolen Throne (which is 8:98, you could MAYBE stretch to 8:97, adding 2-3 years and making Alistair BARELY 18 in Origins).

i’m just baffled by the fact that they wouldn’t even retcon anything, the official site is just like. “yeah this makes no sense. conflicting information <3 it’s all true at the same time”

not to galaxy brain but I finally got my hands on some of the novels, I just finished The Calling and the math just doesn’t add up!!!

The Stolen Throne takes place from approximately 8:98 Blessed to 9:0 Dragon, and there’s multiple references that all of that (specifically Maric’s victory) happened 14 years before The Calling. Fiona and Maric’s son was born a year after that, which means he was born in 9:15 and would have been fifteen at the time of the Fifth Blight in 9:30.
