I feel this commentary is like saying being angry Gypsy Rose was forced to live in a wheelchair is anti-disability. These weren't people who used mobility scooters to live their best life. These were people *coerced* into mobility scooters to limit their choices (like literally ferry them to specific activities and maximize their exposure to ads and increase their consumption) and control their lives in the name of capitalist exploitation. This is the story of a corporation that builds a ship with evil robots to evade responsibility from their damaging externalities. (rebranding the ship as a "socialist spaceship" misunderstands that the ship is BUILT AND CONTROLLED BY A CORPORATION TO AVOID ACCOUNTABILITY). And fatness was not a shorthand for lack of ability in the movie. The people in the credits ARE STILL FAT. There are fat people defeating the evil robot and fat people saving babies, and fat people farming. In the still credits they are living their best lives and they aren't displayed as skinny all of a sudden for doing physical activity. They are still fat when they are selling things in the market and farming and all the rest and the kids running around are chubby kids having fun.
They are showing us people going from being fat and displaying all signs of alienation described by marx (alienation from others, from labor, etc) to fat and having connection to their labor and to their fellow humans. But human connection doesn't make them skinny and fatness didn't make them impaired. They cannot walk due to atrophy not due to fatness. Capitalism and systems of oppression made them impaired. It made a society where their mobility was artificially limited by infrastructure. (JUST LIKE OUR SOCIETY). I will note the complete absence of disabled people in Big n Large's utopia. Because I wouldn't be surprised if this ship is also a eugenics ship. Because the point is that these people are not physically impaired, in fact, it is creepy *none of them are.* They all have cookie cutter needs and cookie cutter interests, and cookie cutter lives.
it was kind of fucked up for wall-e to be that way about fat people now that im thinking about it
