Outside of my usual update posts, I try not to talk about my Marshall collection too much. I'm often worried someone might get jealous if I bring it up a lot, or that others may see it as me trying to brag... or, in the case of someone on Twitter, use it as an excuse to whine about a character they don't like! However, while looking over my shelves to find spots (heh) for my latest purchases, I realized something that I felt was worth talking about...

My collection's becoming a time capsule, huh?

PAW Patrol is ten years old now, and throughout its history, we've seen so many toys, plush dolls, and other types of merchandise based on its characters, films and themes. However, once these products fulfill their purpose, most of them disappear, never to be seen on store shelves again (at this point, you'll have to hope you can get lucky and find them on Ebay or something). Granted, this isn't a new concept, as companies have been doing this before any of us were born. But whether it's a figurine based on a subseries, a candy-filled tin cup, or something else entirely, many of these products are now starting to become lost in time.

Take this ornament, for instance. When I first found out about it, I could only find a single picture of it on an old page on a Sears website (listed as "out of stock" for many years). If you go looking for it now, you likely won't find anything about it anywhere. Unless I'm mistaken, the only place you'll see it now is... well, on my account.

How about lunch boxes based on particular themes? I feel like Sea Patrol was pretty big for a while, but with the launch of Aqua Pups, you probably won't see any of its illustrations anymore. There's also that figurine and plush doll of Marshall wearing his winter Sea Patrol coat... which popped up once and then never again.

How about this product? It was never sold in the USA, so I had to import it from the United Kingdom. I still think it's one of the coolest items in my collection, since whoever manufactured it clearly put in the extra effort to make it look quite accurate to the character... and it's just a shampoo bottle! It was made in 2016, so you won't see too many of them anymore, especially unopened and in good condition. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if only a handful exist now.

What about the old plush designs? Some have floppy legs, while others can stand on their own. Now that Spin Master's switched to a new style, you likely won't see these in stores anymore. Some websites might still sell them, but otherwise, they're a thing of the past now.

How about my Ready Race Rescue theatrical poster? Yes, believe it or not, it actually played in some! As far as I'm aware, these posters were never sold in stores, which means they were made specifically for use in theaters. Once the mini-movie drove ran its course, most of them were thrown away. I was fortunate someone not only kept one, but also put it on Ebay, too. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the few that still exists.

I could surely go on about the many other products we'll likely never see in stores again, but no doubt we'd be here all day. Again, this isn't anything new or surprising, since the old always gets pushed out in favor of the new at some point or another. But hey, just because something is old, that doesn't mean it should be forgotten! Honestly, I like tracking down these older products and, in a way, preserving them so they can be viewed by fans once again... especially if it involves a favorite character of mine!

Of course, it's difficult to say if any of this will mean anything in the future. PAW Patrol is big, but it's no Mickey Mouse or Star Wars. I have to imagine a Pup-Fu Marshall toy from 2015 can't compare to a Luke Skywalker action figure from 1977. Thus, I have to wonder... will PAW Patrol ever become just as big, or will it inevitably conclude and simply fade from our minds as the years go by? Will anyone look back at these toys and see them with the same level of fondness? It's possible that, in ten or twenty years from now, everything I've purchased will only be worth a dollar or two at a Goodwill or yard sale. Perhaps my collection's only good for collecting dust?

Well, even if that's true, I don't mind. These items are linked to a character I love, so regardless of how the future views them, they'll all remain special to me. Perhaps, in the end, that's all that matters. :)

Art things still pending. There's so.much.paperwork to do 😵😵‍💫 I've finished and sent the most pressing one today, but now my head feels like concrete so after taking the doggos for a little walk maybe I'll see if my brain is up to some painting instead.

Also I've sold a handful of pothos cuttings through Kleinanzeigen which I believe is ebay Classifieds in English? Feels weird to make more money with plants than art, but I'm not gonna complain xD not that this was any significant amount in the first place ahaha While I was at it I made a business account for offering the pet portrait service there too. Can't hurt, doesn't cost me anything.

I've also been working on redoing the shop and I'm quite satisfied with my progress. Still not done, but I'm also still not comfortable paying for the cookie bot each month, so it's no rush anyway. I wish I could just re-open it though 😂 I like having it available, even if the majority of visitors are likely bots. It feels like my business is THERE at least.

Thank you my dude, I have noticed both your accounts in my notifs, didn't know they were both you. Believe me, I have learned over the last few months how much a challenge it is to get tumblr to co-operate with interacting via a side-blog.

I have not made or seriously considered making a ko-fi. I suspect we're all financially fucked right now, and although I really appreciate the thought, I can't accept your dollars. There are definitely people in more severe need than I am. At this point, I'm selling my stuff on ebay to pay my bills because I choose to (and it's really just on me to get stuff ready to list so people can buy).

Starting in the middle of February, up until about 3 weeks ago, I had experienced basically constant, chronic back pain from untreated scoliosis (it was so bad I'm 90% sure I gave myself a stomach ulcer/gastritis from treating it with so many NSAIDs), and that - along with plenty of other job-related reasons - led me to finally quit my "career" of almost 17 years in June (started there when I was 19). I have actively chosen not to seek other traditional employment since then because I've finally realized it's just not worth it to me to give up that much of my life, being miserable, just to make sure I can pay for things I'll never own, bills that will never stop coming. At this point, I'm here for a good time, not a long time.

So all that said, I again appreciate the offer, but I must decline. If you want to help make my situation better, the best way to do that is to keep engaging with my writing, with comments and reblogs with tags (again, saw your other account interacting, all your tags on my Cooper chapters really mean so much more than you can ever know). The literal only joy I have anymore is creating for fandom stuff, and seeing people engage with the fics and gif sets I unleash onto the internet, and continuing to do so is the most beneficial thing you can do for me 💙

Are you open to selling rings if you can get one made again? I have the black label ring but its not close to that accurate. 😭

I'll just try to answer anything and everything in one go... To be honest my initial issue with The Black Label ring wasn't the quality, so much as it was coupled with fact that it's so expensive, now, because it's only available 3rd party as of today. In addition, even if it was available for a more reasonable price again, it just wasn't what I was looking for in general and wouldn't have fit my thumb anyway. The Black Label official ring as far as I know, is sold in ring size 15, but that's Japanese ring sizes. That's a 7½, in USA ring sizing... and there is NO WAY my thumb, can fit that size. My ring finger can't even fit that size... not comfortably. Unless one cherishes it as a part of a collection and/or it fits the intended finger, I might understand but... I personally just couldn't justify forking over $500+ dollars (there's one going for over $700 on ebay right now! 😶) for something used, of that ... quality?? No matter how 'official' it is. @noirserviteur and I were talking about all this, and that's when he told me "I could literally make a better one for you much less expensively with higher quality materials" and I didn't believe it. From what I understand after discussing this, the problem with possibly selling a ring: Theoretically, this non-official ring, is specifically fitted to be a loose on my thumb (because I want to wear gloves with it also, without my thumb being squeezed because I do not want the ring to warp). It fits how I want it to without falling off or anything but what I'm saying is, it's a BIG BOY! It's like a Ring size 12 USA, or something. It's custom sized, and it's more than likely, the model will need to be resized to the specifications of the buyer. This isn't a simple matter of just shrinking it because from what I understand that could change the size of the gem (not ideal). And the thickness of the material in certain spots would make the print fail. One thing he didn't take into account with our little "bet" was the cost of his labor, and time... Altogether it was about $200 USD on the cost of printing it + materials. The labor, that is the issue in terms of pricing it. Noir is my best friend and this was something he made intended as a gift, I can't in good conscious put a price on the base model + the additional time it would take him to resize it, that's up to him... Something like this, even just resizing the model... would take him a good long while. I am under the impression (if he was willing to work hourly for minimum wage) by the time another ring was completed, it would honestly cost... more, than I think someone would be willing to pay.

I know the comic piracy debate is a never-ending cycle, but in India where I live, you can't get western comics (or manga for that matter). There aren't comic book stores. Sometimes on Amazon you can find collected editions worth more than INR 1000 at least, for the paperbacks. Most older collections, even from the early 2000s, will be upwards of INR 6000. And sure, it's because the exchange value is so low for Indian rupees, but that's still a LOT of money to Indian citizens. You can get digital editions of random odd issues for approx. INR 150, so that's there. But overall it's really a huge investment to buy a physical comic. So yes, I pirate. But I get so guilty when this debate rolls around, every time. I just don't see any other alternative.

I debated whether or not to answer this considering I haven't really addressed the comics piracy issue before so I'm not sure I'm the right account to talk about it, and also because my askbox is not a confessional and I am not a priest, but then some Spider-Man news broke that I feels ties into it this so whatever, we're going for it. The comics piracy debate comes up every couple of months and will probably continue to come up every couple of months until forever and all of these points have been stated before by others because nothing in this debate is new. First things first, you shouldn't feel guilty. I'm going to suggest actually that nobody should feel guilty, unless you are like, a millionaire and you're exclusively pirating indie books. The prices you're quoting are prohibitively expensive but I have some unfortunate news for everyone involved: the prices are really bad in the US, too. If you want good collected editions, especially in hardcover, they're going to run at similar if not quite equal prices. Comics have gone from a cheap hobby to an overwhelmingly expensive hobby.

This is a good article comparing to the cover costs of American comics since the 1960s adjusted for inflation which I think puts some things in perspective. Comics currently cost roughly $5 USD per issue, which doesn't sound that bad, even though most of my monthly streaming services are roughly that price for a whole month's access to a library of content. But it only doesn't sound that bad if you're not buying special issues (the Marvel Pride book retailed for $10), and if you're only reading one or two books a month. The problem is, American superhero comics are specifically designed so you're not reading just one or two books per month -- this is why we have events! And crossovers! Not for the story potential but because it forces the consumer to purchase more product. This is why there's constantly an event running with a checklist of tie-in issues in the back. So now you're spending probably at least $20 a month. If you're a fan with a lot of interest in different titles, and in different publishers, this can easily hit triple USD digits. It's a money pit. It's not affordable to most people. And this is where that new Spider-Man news comes in, because it was announced today that Amazing Spider-Man is going back to a thrice monthly schedule like it used to operate on during Brand New Day. Which sounds good at first -- more comics, yay -- until you realize that's probably going to be $15 USD a month for a one title. That's $180 a year for one title, not including annuals or special issues. That's not feasible for a lot of fans -- young fans, poor fans, fans with other financial obligations etc. And most people aren't reading just one title. I don't know how the X-Men fans are currently financing their Krakoa habit and I'm afraid to ask. There are services like Marvel Unlimited, which make things slightly more affordable, but I imagine the wait for newer issues to hit the service can be alienating for some fans who want to join in current discussions, the library has some incredibly massive holes in it which is unacceptable when it's coming from inside the mouse house, and I believe, although I could be wrong, that it is not available in all countries. Comics are no longer an easily accessible hobby, if you're paying for everything you read.

"But the creatives deserve to get paid" is the common argument and yeah, they do, I'm not arguing that point. They should absolutely get paid and they should get well. I'm a writer, I'm a published writer even, and I want to be a published novelist, and I definitely want to get paid, and I'm reserving the right to be a complete hypocrite about this, as I do with everything in my life, but this is where the difference between indie publications and Marvel publications comes in: Marvel is owned by Disney. There is absolutely no excuse for Disney not to pay their creatives. If they are not getting paid fairly, it's not because you pirated a book -- it's because Disney has a vested interest in not paying their creators, as evidenced by Alan Dean Foster's lawsuit claiming that they are withholding royalties from him. Fans pirating these books are not the reason the creatives are not getting paid fairly -- the creatives are not getting paid fairly for the same reason that Disney park employees experience homelessness, and it's because Disney would rather put that money into the pockets of their executives. There is no debate on that subject. It's easier and perhaps more convenient to blame fans for pirating comics rather than putting all of their money into what has been for years now a prohibitively expensive hobby to keep up with, but the fact of the matter is Disney could pay all of their creatives what they're worth without hurting their bottom line and instead chooses not to. That is not on you, as an individual reader. You have no reason to feel guilty about that, no matter what your circumstances are, and you do not have to justify your actions to either me or the House of the Mouse. I'm with you, and Disney ultimately doesn't care. They're making that money up elsewhere and then not distributing it fairly to the people who create the properties their media empire is built off of. But especially if you're buying older books, you should know that your money is not going to the creative team -- once it's out of publication, they're not going to get any of the money you spent on it. The argument then becomes that you should be supporting local comics stores which yes, is true, but also doesn't apply to everyone, like anon who doesn't have access to local comic book stores. And again, this can become prohibitively expensive -- collections are expensive. Older, hard to find collections can be very expensive. Once something is out of print, all bets are off on what it might be selling for. Buying single issues is only affordable if the single issue isn't desirable or sometimes if it's in exceedingly bad condition. For the sake of transparency, I have a fairly big single issue collection because it's my preferred format, but I had the time to bargain hunt, access to local comic book stores and large comic conventions, and I'm very good at sniping eBay auctions. The most I have ever dropped on a single issue was expensive for me -- and still under three digits USD -- and it's for an issue from the '60s that is not in great condition.

The problem with this debate is that it is generally a nuanced issue that always gets boiled down to "piracy bad" in a way that makes a lot of well meaning and well intentioned fans, especially the ones with extenuating circumstances, feel bad. It's not your fault. You shouldn't feel guilty. There are a huge amount of reasons why someone might pirate something that are not bad reasons and do not make you a bad person who is personally withholding money from the creators -- because you're not. I don't publicly tell people where to pirate comics, mostly because I really don't think it's that hard to find out for yourselves especially because several creators involved with Marvel themselves have, I suspect accidentally, posted pages of their work to social media WITH THE BANNER OF A WELL KNOWN COMICS PIRACY SITE STILL IN THE IMAGE please learn how to crop, so maybe my standpoint on the issue wasn't well known, but there it is. I think readers should, if they are able to financially and otherwise, support the creators they like, but that it should be acknowledged that this is a more complicated issue than it's commonly made out to be on Twitter and that the largest part of the blame needs to be put on the companies making these comics inaccessible to many and who refuse to pay their creators fairly, not on individual fans. Unfortunately alot of international fans are against fansites and try to make them out to be bad people, they like to spread false information and falsely accuse people of stuff they never did, which causes them to receive hate and be bullied. I never understood why

However. I am aware that SOME fansites are stalkers, but not ALL of them are as people like to claim. Fans like to claim them as a bad person when they aren't, I understand cameras aren't allowed in venues (it's a rule for the entire world, while people think it's bighit who made the rule) but they just want to take pictures of idols for the fans who can't see them in person. They claim them as stalkers because of airport photos, however... If they can't be the airport, then why can the media outlets be there? I don't really support airport photos (only the ones where they are still outside and a far distance from them) There is literally a few NEWS media outlets that are stalkers, yet they don't seem to care about those? They keep saying "they take pictures and use the boys to sell unofficial merch" but it's the same thing that bighit does? It's the same thing that people do on Etsy, Amazon, eBay, etc.. So what's the difference? If bighit and other regular fans can sell unofficial merch, why can't the fansites? Taehyung literally had unofficial merch from fansites before, he had posters in his room that he got from a few fansites. The boys don't mind fansites at all.
