My favorite part about it is that they don't say it just because, it isn't just for fan service (which Bobo claims they can't get away with bc of the interest in destiel, so anything they do is intrinsic to the plot). No. Sam says this because it's Exposition! They are reminding the audience that Crowley and Dean had a relationship because it is so necessarily relevant to the plot of this episode.

Dean knows Crowley in a way that Sam can't know him. Can analyze him in a way that's useful in the hunt for Amara.

BEFORE WE HEAR A VOICEMAIL CROWLEY LEFT FOR DEAN BACK DURING 10x01. (Which. Dean. Kept.)

"Hey idiot. Undelay. Spanish for get your ass over here! You think I've been footing your astronomical bar tabs for the past 5 weeks so you can sleep past noon with last night's skank? Well Dean-"

Before we see them interact again. Before we feel the tension there.

Before this amazing confirmation:

Bobo Berens, I love when you come through for us. I feel so vindicated. The f'd up part is it feels like the confirmation of a fan theory, but actually it's just confirmation of the clear plot we can readily perceive from a television show. It has felt like tinhatting because the show told its audience for years that half of the plot of the series was not happening. But Bobo had our backs.

Edit: I wrote up a long post on 10.01 months ago but it went poof so I'm going to have to rewrite it but drowley being literal referenced canon changes everything. This voicemail confirms my thoughts and I feel ... feelings about this and all the gaslighting.
