LEC RETROSPECTIVE: KOI

Ahhh, I should be hated for saying I don't care for KOI, and I don't think they should get to worlds.

So! KOI are technically a new org, but quickly accrued one of the largest fanbases in esports by being founded by famous and popular Spanish content creator and e-celebrity Ibai, and being part owned by footballer Gerard Piqué. Previously however, they were known as Rogue, probably one of the less popular teams in the LEC.

Being a team accepted during franchising, they didn't come in with the greatest advantage. They didn't have a regional fanbase like MAD Lions, they didn't have a huge pre-established presence in LEC history like Origen or SK, only being present in Rainbow 6 Siege and their parent company also owning a COD League team. The 2 esports you DEFINITELY invest in for huge fanbases. But they quickly established a presence in LEC by being so perfectly average, and then by being so perfectly average that they began succeeding.

Entering in 2019, they were a middle of the pack team with some insane talent, like Inspired and Larssen, plus Woolite and Vander in the botlane. That roster didn't pan out the best, and after Hans sama joined in 2020, they had a middling spring followed by coming 1st in regular season summer, and making it to worlds, then they shit the bed and went 1-5 :p. Well 2021 went a hell of a lot better, adding Odoamne and new rookie Trymbi, coming 2nd in spring, and 3rd in summer playoffs, making worlds and being drawn into the Group of Death, and managing to make FPX blow the fuck up. 2022 replaced Hans sama with Comp, an oft maligned player resigned to C tier rosters like Vitality's 2019-2021 disaster rosters, and their MVP jungler Inspired with Malrang, a korean player who was known for his time on goddamn Jin Air (rip sadplane). They then proceeded to get 2nd in playoffs in Spring, and 1st in Summer. As you do. Being the only western team to make it out of groups, they immediately got drawn vs JDG, and lost pretty handily with some weird niche picks that absolutely did not pan out (Trymbi Nasus Support, in a bad matchup for it, anyone?) 2023 began with Odo being replaced in toplane with Szygenda, a player similarly maligned by vitality's disaster rosters and the rebranding to KOI, after a merger with Rogue's team, inheriting Rogue's entire infrastructure in the league. Now that's how you get into the league in a big way and establish yourself quickly. And as the previous champions, giving Odo and Larssen their first LEC titles, there were fairly big expectations put on this team. Sure, Szygenda was basically kinda a rookie at this point still, not having played a full year on Vitality before being benched then brought back in 2021, but his performances in the LFL were impressive nonetheless, often being called TheShygenda for his insane performances on Gwen and Gnar.

Winter began as it usually does, weirdly. KOI take a game off of BDS, with a double ADC botlane, off Excel with their tried and true Kalista/Soraka, and losing a game to a Fnatic who hadn't boomed completely yet with a very ill advised Jhin pick. But, a 2-1 start isn't exactly awful. However, KOI showed some of the problems that Rogue would show back in 2022 Spring, and 2021. Namely, the phenomenon known as Rogue Time. Where at around 16-20 minutes, the whole team mental booms and completely forgets how to play league of legends well, and the midgame completely collapses undoing the earlygame advantages they accrued usually. It got memed heavily by Korean fans, and slowly spread, but it was an actual thing that would happen. Rogue mid-game was absolute abysmal, only in 2022 Summer did they overcome it, and in Winter 2023, it came back in a big way.

Week 2 didn't go that well. A loss to a fumbling Heretics, and Ruby's 2nd good game for the year, a loss to MAD's double ADC comp, and a loss to SK with another, ill advised ADC pick. God, what was going on? Odo wasn't the biggest shotcaller, but they were a lot better than this in Summer? Well one thing was Trymbi didn't look the best, basically ever since he picked Nasus at Worlds and he went on a bit of a tirade on Twitter against the people saying it was a troll pick. Basically he stopped playing to his usual standard afterwards, sadly. These problems continued into week 3. They hadn't locked playoffs yet, and were sitting at the bottom of the table with an underwhelming Astralis, a slumping Fnatic, and a dead in the water Excel. A win over Vitality started their week, which I believe locked them at least a tiebreaker, a loss to G2, and a win over Astralis locked themselves into playoffs, with a poor bot showing in all 3 games. Yeah, KOI didn't look the best. Nothing they won was convincing, and their losses looked lifeless. I don't know, the whole project wasn't going the best so far. Groups wasn't gonna be easy, their first series was a surging SK, who were looking like dark horses for the entire split.

Well, against all odds, KOI actually got a 2-0 over SK, with a good Larssen performance and a renewed Malrang on Sejuani doing Malrang things. Next opponent, Vitality. Ah shit, this is the superteam who got 1st in Winter, KOI have been relying almost entirely on clutch Larssen performances. Well again, against most odds, Larssen pulled out another set of carry performances, with Comp making sure his Sivir his noticed again for its insane carry potential, beating vitality in a quick 2-0. KOI made playoffs! Without demonstrating as much Rogue Time! Let's goooo!

Rogue were always better in Bo1s, but now as KOI they appear to have reversed this? Wonder if their Bo5 performances are gonna be as strong. First up was a series VS the other team who went 2-0 in Groups, G2. A carry performance from Hans sama's Miss Fortune, and a surprise Bel'Veth from Yike took game 1 and 2 respectively. KOI got put on their last legs, and Game 3 came back to a Comp performance. Man got a pentakill! Demolishing G2 inside their base, they got a food back in the series, and it came down to Game 4, it's still doable. Rogue have been reverse swept before, and they can do it to their enemies just as easily. KOI should be able to as well.

Nope nope a disaster in the botlane let Hans sama carry the entirety of G2 vs a Varus/Kalista botlane from Comp and Trymbi, being utterly destroyed. But, but, unlike others so far, KOI got a 2-0 in Groups, so they get a second chance to qualify to finals, and then a potential rematch vs G2. All they need to do is beat their old rivals, the MAD Lions. The team that dominated 2021, and when they slumped in 2022, Rogue took over and won Summer. Their rivalry has been building since 2020, when they took the regular season over G2 and fought each other for the top spots to go to worlds.

And that series went ok! A dominant Larssen Tristana, and a signature Kalista from Comp won Game 1, but that quickly faded. Game 2 featured a fairly weak botlane and the Nisqy Gragas that teams refused to ban, Game 3 had the New Hyli Special, Rell, and Game 4 had the Nisqy Gragas. That's the season. Y'know what, considering they made 3rd overall this season, that's not the worst but it's a step down. They did replace their weakside king Odoamne, so maybe the team needs more time to gel. Their botlane also looked shockingly weak after it was fair to call Comp/Trymbi a top 5 at best botlane at Worlds last year, which was tragic. Trymbi really hadn't been playing well, and Comp looked a lot less confident in lane and in teamfights, probably because his support wasn't doing as well at all.

But, nonetheless, not winning the split is a disappointment. Going into Spring, they were in a good position. Top 3 means that they have a good chance to make MSI if G2 win another split in dominant fashion, as long as they outplace MAD Lions. No changes going into Spring, but Week 1 wasn't exactly a glowing highlight. A loss to Astralis, who were looking pretty good. Day 2, a win over Heretics after some insane fumbles from Ruby, but it's an awful look for KOI, that they could only win through a phonemally awful throw and a botched baron call, and the fact that the game was that close vs a heretics that looked like well... Garbage they looked like shit.

Day 3, a rematch from Winter, MAD vs KOI, a snoozer with few kills and a generally unimpressive game from both sides. Well, Week 1 ending on 1 win. That's really bad. You made playoffs last split guys... Sadly, Week 2's looking a lot harder. G2, the Winter Champions, SK who blew past all expectations and Fnatic, who despite dropping out in the regular season, came back with a new top laner, new support, and went 0-3 first week...

Defying the odds, winning against G2 thanks to a strong Szygenda, a win over SK thanks to Comp and Larssen, and then a... loss to Fnatic... To be fair, Razork took a facilitator in Vi and made it look like a hypercarry, punishing the botlane of KOI super super hard, playing really really not well, failing to execute a pick comp and failing their teamfights really badly despite having goddamn Taric.

Week 3, KOI have basically locked Groups. MAD, Fnatic, Excel and Heretics all being 2-4, while KOI sit on 3-3 means they're safer going forward, almost guaranteed a tiebreaker at the very worst. And hey, they're facing Excel, who just subbed in a new midlaner in Abbedagge (god this news made me kinda mad, but i digress), plus BDS, who practically ran the regular season and Vitality who definitely looked weaker compared to Winter, but were still no slouch, especially with a strongside bot laner like Upset.

Well a win over Excel who showed most of the same problems, especially with closing out games, then 2 losses meant that KOI barely scraped into Groups. 7th place. Not great. You only beat the half starved MAD Lions and Heretics thanks to that one extra win. 4-5 isn't something to be happy about at all, and considering Rogue were often considered Bo1 Merchants, never showing up as strongly in their Bo5s, this is a really bad look. Groups is looking grim, especially considering they're facing G2 next.

And that series saw an incredibly rare Pantheon pick twice in toplane, piloted by BrokenBlade, which kinda stomped the lane vs Szygenda, plus another hypercarry performance from Yike in Game 1 left KOI on the back foot. A disastrous Leona performance from Trymbi as well felt phenomally bad. But, KOI didn't discourage. Next game, they came in and nabbed a Jayce for Szygenda, after some of his insanely good Jayce play in regular season, and a rare Malrang Lee Sin that actually worked out, but a quiet game from botlane, despite a Zeri/Lulu lane. Game 3 was desperation. Mikyx picked a Jarvan Support, and played it like garrrrrbage as Comp proved exactly why they never can give him Sivir, carrying the game incredibly hard, with a weak Szygenda Kennen and a shock Larssen Akali showing KOI at some of their individual peaks again.

A win over the Winter Champions puts you in a damn good position, after a rough as hell regular season. But still, Malrang felt coinflippy after so many junglers figured out his insanity, Trymbi looked incredibly weak despite being alongside Comp who was capable of solocarrying, and Larssen was either passive and willing to scale until late, or fully willing to put the game on his back and carry everything through to a win, with no in between. Facing BDS next, who uhhh... Managed to completely figure out and lock down the meta.

And KOI as serial meta players... Yeah prayers weren't gonna do anything they got booty blasted in a 2-0. Adam counter picking Kennen with an Aery Jarvan, Sheo putting on an absolute clinic on Vi, and in Game 2, Crownie dominating the laning phase and Nuc getting an insane game on Cassio left KOI reeling going into their next series, this time for their groups lives, another series vs G2.

Now it's fair to say that for most of the season, G2 had been experimenting on new odd picks, since they had a stamped ticket to MSI already, but they obviously had some ambitions still. But, now that they had their entire season at risk, G2 stopped fucking around. Game 1 saw a unique Cho'Gath pick into Kennen, which almost worked until Larssen scaling paid off and he took over the game on Viktor. Game 2 saw a pair of insane ridiculous drafts. The Bel'Veth/Sejuani Jungle/Mid respectively, which demonstrated some insanely high potential, vs an AP Varus Mid from Larssen, which ended up horribly. MVP Performances from Yike, Caps and BrokenBlade vs a really bad game for Comp/Trymbi, again, led into a game point game 3. Larssen Ahri, Comp Sivir, and Trymbi Lulu. This is as close as you'll get to the max comfort draft for KOI, and they shitted it. Hans sama completely ran over Trymbi and transferred that lead everywhere across the map, going deathless and basically solo carrying the game, leading to a KOI loss. Out at 6th, before playoffs. A major disappointment, and everyone on the team felt it. Something had to change.

Summer came along, and a few rumours flew around. One of the biggest rumours was Rekkles roleswapping to support for the future, which meant no Fnatic botlaner, since they weren't gonna keep him on as a support. So a trade was proposed. Fnatic buy Trymbi, a talent grown on Rogue, winning a title with them, and a weakspot all year for KOI, in exchange, KOI get Advienne, excitable, mature Advienne who, to be frank, hadn't gotten the best chances in LEC. A small stint on Excel before being replaced by Mikyx, followed by a benched season and a re-run in the ERLs, then joining Fnatic after a fairly weak season from Rhuckz. Advienne came into a bit of a bad situation, having to follow someone who was world class like Trymbi, even if 2023 was fairly weak so far.

And so, Summer began, with a sole change of the support, Advienne instead of Trymbi. Was this gonna fix the team? Fuck no, you can say a lot of things about Trymbi, bad and good but he's a loud player who calls a lot of shots, something that KOI definitely needed more of. Advienne wasn't that guy, at all.

And wouldn't you believe it, the same shit happened again. 1-2 Week 1, 1-2 Week 2, 2-1 Week 3 barely scraping into Groups. What's the point. But i'm getting ahead of myself. A win over Excel, who most expected to still go absolute dead last in LEC for the 3rd time, so not much to write home about. A loss to BDS who came 2nd in Playoffs and a fairly bad Aphelios game from Comp, followed by a loss to MAD Lions which was honestly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Rogue Time kicked in harder than ever and everyone comitted completely to protecting the president, meaning Carzzy went completely untouched, 1-2 week.

Goddamn it guys. Week 2, a loss to an incredibly strong Fnatic following a disaster game from Comp, a win over Heretics with a very strong Larssen Tristana, and a loss to SK capped off the week, another 1-2 week and a really really bad look heading towards groups. Week 3 started vs Vitality, a free win with a good Statikk Shiv Leblanc from Larssen, a loss to Yike's Kha'Zix for game 2 of the week and the game that would basically decide their groups chances: vs Astralis, who had been floundering in the lead up. And then Comp showed up again, after being basically absent the whole season. Hand delivering Sivir boomerangs to the entirety of Astralis, carrying KOI through to groups, looking phenomally weak and like easy prey. As written yesterday, Astralis then had to hope that SK lose to Fnatic, to keep groups, and their chances for worlds alive, but that all went out the window, after SK pulled a miracle out of nowhere and beat Fnatic.

KOI is the first team i'm writing about that actually is in Group stage, meaning I can do some meaty speculation about them heading into groups, rather than end it with a limp "hope they stick together" again. Truly, KOI look dead. After a strong Winter, an underwhelming Spring and a dead in the water summer they rightly should've lost for some of their abysmal performances and the hard return of Rogue Time, it's unlikely anyone will bet on KOI heading into the group stage. Considering their first opponent is a pissed off G2 looking stronger than ever and looking to secure their place in Season Finals even harder than before, KOI should definitely count themselves lucky that their vacations might start sooner than later. They're also one of the teams fortunate enough to have good championship points, meaning they might eak into Season Finals regardless, if Heretics and Fnatic completely bomb out, which is unlikely at this point.

Whatever does happen, I'll be there watching. Larssen has become one of my favourite players in the past couple years, and of all the "next generation" mid laners, he, humanoid and Vetheo are the ones i've got the most faith in, by far. Comp as well deserves a good roster, just a shame it might only come next year.

They literally shafted the most important champions like Yorick, Kalista, Maokai and so on, champions that the main core of their story was about the Ruined King. And what do we get? Actual ragtag group of randoms who are led by some angsty woman and equally random picks for Ruined Champions. 

They truly did my boy Viego dirty with this animation, to the point that they forgot to add the Maiden of the Mist which was apparently a critical point in bringing Isolde back.

What? Did you expect me not to make this? It’s the goddamn Ruined King! He’s finally out after all these years! I mean sure he’s a goddamn twink but still; he’s finally out! Also Samira build is coming out 35 years from now.

And even though I put a Warlock TikTok meme in my last video, here’s a whole bunch of them because... yeah no shit he’s a Hexblade... Of the Ruined King.

GOALS

Ruin to all! - MIST'S EDGE: Basic attacks deal a percentage of the target's current health bonus physical damage on-hit.

Serve me in death - If you ever wanted to play as the enemy for a bit Viego will let you take a ghost or two; as a treat.

The mist is my great unending sadness - Foggy days are typical for an edgy boy, and King Ruin is so edgy he wants to cover the entire world with fog! Yeah that “mist is sadness” quote is real; I got it from the Wiki.

RACE

Viego is a human... but he has a great degree of variance. We’ll be going for yet another Variant Human because we’re not allowed any monster champions anymore. As a Variant Human you get a +1 in two different stats of your choice: increase your Charisma and Strength by 1 for the strength to be beautiful for your queen. You also get proficiency in a skill of your choice: Perception will let you see through the mist and search far-and-wide for your queen. And you get a language of your choice: Abyssal seems reasonable to speak to the mist.

Of course the main appeal of Variant Human is the feat at level 1, and to swing the Blade of the Ruined King Great Weapon Master will let you cut through a percentage of the enemy’s health! When you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon (such as a greatsword), you can choose to take a -5 penalty to your hit chance. If you do hit you’ll do an extra 10 damage with your strike! And as an added bonus when you score a critical hit (with a melee weapon) or kill a creature, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action!

ABILITY SCORES

15; CHARISMA - League of shirtless anime boys amIrite? Gotta look good for Isolde.

14; DEXTERITY - Repeat after me: “something something Medium Armor.”

13; STRENGTH - This is a requirement for another one of the classes we’ll be taking. Yup this isn’t just straight 20 levels in Hexblade!

12; CONSTITUTION - A ruined king with a blackened heart is still allowed to have some health.

10; WISDOM - Destroying the entire planet just to simp for your wife isn’t the wisest move.

8; INTELLIGENCE - Nor is it the smartest.

BACKGROUND

You were the king of a long-forgotten nation, so unfortunately noble wouldn’t work. But you still have servants! The Knight background grants proficiency in the History that you lived through as well as Persuasion to get Isolde back. You also get proficiency with a Gaming Set and Language of your choice, which I’d say pick your fancy.

But the main reason we’re taking Knight (and not Noble) is for Retainers! You get three knights sworn to your kingdom (Kalista, Hecarim, and the third one) who will do mundane tasks for you. While Hecarim may be up for a slaughter unfortunately your retainers can’t do anything in combat and won’t follow you into dangerous locations. And of course if you treat your subjects poorly they will leave you. But it can always be useful to have more spirits in the mist to search for her!

THE BUILD

LEVEL 1 - PALADIN 1

Hah! Did you think we’d be starting with Warlock? Put simply we need things from Paladin more, notably the proficiencies as well as starting equipment. Dude imagine having to spend 3200 gold to buy the sword literally named after you? But for now you might just want to grab a Longsword to start. Regardless Paladins get proficiency in two skills from the Paladin list: Athletics are required in the jungle, and Intimidation will let everyone meet know that you will stop at nothing for her! You fucking simp...

You also get Divine Sense to sense the beasts of the mist, or your queen. As an action you can know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the creature type, but not its identity. Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated. (Have a feeling you’ll find a lot of desecrated areas.) You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier plus 1, and regain all uses at the end of a Long Rest.

And you can restore a bit of health thanks to Lay on Hands. You have a pool of healing equal to 5 times your Paladin level that comes back at the end of a Long Rest. You can heal a creature for any number of hitpoints from that pool as an action when you touch them, or cure a disease / poison affecting them with 5 hitpoints. Man that would’ve been useful a couple of thousand years ago, huhn?

LEVEL 2 - WARLOCK 1

Time to pick up the Sword of the Ruler of the Mist. Hm... There has to be a better way of saying that. Regardless Warlocks get to choose their subclass at level 1 and to get a comedically large sword that saps peoples’ lifeforce we’ll be opting for the one, the only Hexblade patron! As a Hex Warrior you can wield martial weapons as well as medium armor (which you already could cause Paladin), but can also choose to swing a sword with your Charisma instead of your Strength or Dexterity. Which is great because you’re not exactly the buff sort. Unfortunately you can’t use a two-handed greatsword just yet, which is why I said you’d do good to grab a longsword instead.

But if you are locked in combat Hexblade’s Curse will make sure that you can dispose of them quickly. As a bonus action you can mark a target for 1 minute. During that time you do bonus damage equal to your proficiency bonus to the cursed target, crit on a 19 or a 20, and regain hit points equal to your warlock level + your Charisma modifier when you kill them. The curse ends early if the target dies, you die, or you are incapacitated.

And of course as a Warlock you get Pact Magic. You learn two cantrips and two leveled spells: Eldritch Blast will let you manipulate the mists for a ranged attack, and Prestidigitation will help you keep clean and kingly despite all the black mist flowing out of that gaping stab wound in your chest. As for leveled spells Armor of Agathys will let you put on some Thornmail to keep your health up and hit your foes back, and I mean Shield is on the Hexblade expanded spell list anyways so we may as well use it.

LEVEL 3 - WARLOCK 2

Second level Warlocks get Eldritch Invocations as the mist manipulates your body and soul. For now take Devil’s Sight to see through your Harrowed Path with your dumb human eyes, and we’ll be leaving the other invocation slot open for a level.

You also get another spell but all the other first level spells don’t really interest me. Yeah we’re not taking Hex you’re going to have to live with it!

LEVEL 4 - WARLOCK 3

Third level Warlocks get their Pact Boon for a particular tool of the Warlock trade, and to wield a weapon of spectral steel grab Pact of the Blade! The long and short of it is you can make yourself any melee weapon, and Hex Warrior affects any weapon you summon with this feature! This means that you can actually wield a two-handed Greatsword, but feel free to choose other options. Especially now that you can take the Improved Pact Weapon invocation to turn that Cutlass of the Twink King into a +1 weapon, and also summon yourself a gun (shortbow / longbow / light crossbow / heavy crossbow) if you so desire. But I mean, why would you when you have Eldritch Blast?

You can also add some second level spells to your list like Darkness to walk a Harrowed Path through the mist, though remember that even if you can see through the mist your allies probably can’t. And Misty Step, because something something Flash.

LEVEL 5 - WARLOCK 4

4th level means the first of many Ability Score Improvements. Charisma is used for everything that you do so... maybe increase that?

You also get another spell and another cantrip! For your cantrip Mage Hand is helpful to manipulate the mist to grab things from high places. As for leveled spells Blur is on the Hexblade list... but why would you take that instead of Mirror Image, which doesn’t require Concentration.

LEVEL 6 - WARLOCK 5

5th level Warlocks get more Eldritch Invocations. To knock a foe down with Spectral Maw take Eldritch Smite, letting you channel a spell slot into a particularly deadly slash of your Viego’s Edge.

If you want an extra attack early you can also replace Improved Pact Weapon with Thirsting Blade, which is now available. But we will be getting Extra Attack from other sources later.

You can also now learn third level spells like Vampiric Touch for a bit of lifesteal. As a treat.

LEVEL 7 - WARLOCK 6

6th level Hexblades can put their passive to work, and have spirits serve your Sovereign's Domination. Accursed Specter lets you use the soul of a humanoid you killed and make it serve you, using the stats of a specter with temporary hit points equal to half your Warlock level and a bonus to hit equal to your Charisma modifier. The specter remains in your service until the end of your next long rest, which is good because you can use the ability once per Long Rest. The specter rolls initiative separately from you, and obeys your commands.

And hey: you’ve already got ghosts fighting for you, so why not summon your depression to fight as well? Summon Shadowspawn from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (requires a 300 gold gemstone containing tears and) summons a spirit of Fury, Despair, or Fear to fight alongside you. There’s a lot of specifics to this spell that I don’t want to go into (its actual description does a far better job than I ever could) but the important thing to note is that it’ll give you another loyal follower.

LEVEL 8 - PALADIN 2

Time for a few levels in that other class we have. Second level Paladins can choose their Fighting Style and of course to swing a Shank of the Former Blessed Isles Great Weapon Fighting (style) will let you reroll low die to more reliably cut through the mists.

Paladins also get Spellcasting at level 2, and unlike with Warlock casting you actually get some spell slots! You can prepare a number of spells equal to your Charisma modifier plus half your Paladin level (rounded down.) Divine Favor will let you do a bit more damage with your titular blade, and if you want more of a burst of damage then either Thunderous Smite or Wrathful Smite will do some more damage along with additional effects. To protect yourself from the mists and others who’d want to keep you from Isolde take Protection from Evil and Good. And to borrow a death realm from the other world-ending lord of Runeterra take Compelled Duel.

Of course you could ignore all that spellcasting stuff for even more Damage of the Ruined Blade! Divine Smite will let you do 2d8 damage with a first level spell slot, plus an additional 1d8 per spell slot above first, up to a maximum of 5d8 (with a 4th level slot.) Additionally if you hit an undead or fiend you’ll do an extra d8, meaning that with a 4th level spell slot you can do 6d8 damage!

The real neat thing is that this works with Smite spells as well as the Eldritch Smite invocation, allowing you to effectively use two spell slots at once to smite if you so desire.

LEVEL 9 - PALADIN 3

3rd level Paladins get to choose their Divine Oath and nothing will stop your Oath of Conquest to save your queen. You get to add the Command spell to your spell list, as well as Armor of Agathys... Uh woups. Uh we’ll address that when we go back to Warlock.

You get two Channel Divinity options: to keep others from stopping you from reaching your queen Conquering Presence will let you force a Wisdom save on units of your choice within 30 feet to frighten them! Alternatively Guided Strike is like Great Weapon Master but in reverse, giving you +10 to hit. This means that if you use Great Weapon Master as well you’d have a +5 to hit and do +10 damage! But remember that you only have one Channel Divinity per short rest.

You also get Divine Health, because simps don’t take sick days.

LEVEL 10 - PALADIN 4

4th level Paladins get another Ability Score Improvement, and we still use Charisma for basically everything so with this you can cap it off completely!

You can also prepare two more spells but... there isn’t much I want from first level? I mean you can take Cure Wounds for a bit of healing... as treat.

LEVEL 11 - PALADIN 5

5th level Paladins get an Extra Attack. If you took Thirsting Blade from Warlock you might want to replace that too.

You can also prepare second level Paladin spells now! As a Conquest Paladin you get Hold Person to stun with Spectral Maw, and Spiritual Weapon for more soldiers from the mist. You can also prepare Aid to strengthen your army and Branding Smite to see your foes through the mist.

LEVEL 12 - WARLOCK 7

Back to Warlock to replace a lot of things. But firstly you get another Eldritch Invocation: take Trickster's Escape for an emergency QSS.

You also get 4th level spells like Shadow of Moil to become a creature of the mist, and also to get an upgrade from the Darkness spell (which you might want to replace.) Speaking of replacing spells: you got Armor of Agathys from Paladin so replace it with Hallucinatory Terrain to cover the land with mist.

LEVEL 13 - WARLOCK 8

8th level Warlocks get another Ability Score Improvement or a Feat. We’ll be taking the Eldritch Adept feat for more Eldritch Invocations. Which Eldritch Invocation? Why Undying Servitude of course, for more servants of the mist!

D&D Beyond tip: Replace Devil’s Sight and then give yourself 120 feet of Darkvision on the sheet.

You can also get another 4th level spell like Dimension Door, to travel far and wide in a flash to reach your queen.

LEVEL 14 - WARLOCK 9

Hey more Eldritch Invocations! Whispers of the Grave will let you speak to the fragments of Isolde’s soul.

LEVEL 15 - WARLOCK 10

And hey: 5th level spells finally! To strike a foe with Heartbreaker take 

Negative Energy Flood, sundering their health and making them rise to serve you if you end up killing them.

10th level Hexblades get Armor of Hexes. If the target affected by your Hexblade’s Curse hits you with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to roll a d6. On a 4 or higher, the attack instead misses you, regardless of its roll. Naturally this ability makes you particularly good in a 1v1 with whoever you target for Ruination.

You don’t get another spell but you do get a cantrip. Take Toll the Dead to deal with enemies who have high armor, for the mist comes for all.

LEVEL 16 - WARLOCK 11

11th level Warlocks get their 6th level Mystic Arcanum, which looks like a spell slot and acts like a spell slot (IE it comes back after a Long Rest, not a Short one) but can’t be used to upcast your other spells. You can only use it to cast one spell, and for an AoE Heartbreaker take good ol’ Circle of Death.

Also more spells known from your regular Warlock slots: Banishing Smite is on the Hexblade list, and can be used to send any demons back to whence they came.

LEVEL 17 - WARLOCK 12

12th level Warlocks get an Ability Score Improvement or a Feat. I have no idea what else to grab so take the Tough feat for a much needed 24 hitpoint increase to a primarily melee-based character.

You also get another Eldritch Invocation so it’s finally time to get the true Blade of the Ruined King damage with Lifedrinker! This will make any foe struck by your Pact Weapon take an additional 5 necrotic damage. This means that you should be doing 2d6 + 11 damage with every swing of a (+1) Greatsword!

LEVEL 18 - WARLOCK 13

More Mystic Arcanum, this time at 7th level! Power Word Pain will let you subjugate the weak.

And more regular spells: Danse Macabre lets you get more servants forever loyal at your side!

LEVEL 19 - WARLOCK 14

14th level Hexblades are Master of Hexes. Put simply: when a creature affected by Hexblade’s Curse dies, you can apply the curse to a different creature you can see within 30 feet of you. (Though you won’t be healed for the last foe’s death.) This will let you bounce your curse around and reap all its benefits constantly, becoming a master of your own blade.

LEVEL 20 - WARLOCK 15

Our last level is the 15th level of Warlock for a handful of benefits. Firstly we can get an 8th level Mystic Arcanum: Feeblemind is the ultimate tool to truly sunder the weak and discard the chaff.

Secondly you can get your level 15 Eldritch Invocations, and to never mistake Isolde’s face Witch Sight will let you see through any illusion that may be hiding her!

You may also want to replace Improved Pact Weapon as by this point you’ve likely found something better than a regular old +1 greatsword. Visions of Distant Realms and Shroud of Shadows are both very good options.

And we can finally get our last spell: as you gather enough information on the new world Scrying will help you expand your search further beyond!

FINAL BUILD

PROS

Surrender to me! - Two smites plus Great Weapon Master on an already deadly blade results in absolutely devastating spikes of damage with your sword. God forbid you crit!

The black mist flows from me like a tide - You also have plenty of tricks to give you an upper hand in longer combats. Hexblade’s Curse of course, but also Armor of Agathys, Shadow of Moil, and Spiritual Weapon.

Fight, puppet; fight for your king! - You can summon all manner of ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, zombies, and everything in between to serve in your search for your queen.

CONS

The world denied my happiness - Low ability scores mean that your skills won’t be amazing. The ones you’re proficient in are alright but you aren’t much help outside of being deadly and being royal.

Answer for your crimes, death; answer me! - We didn’t take the 6th level of Paladin which means we didn’t get Aura of Protection. As a result your saving throws are rather low, and while I tried to avoid grabbing too many Concentration spells yo do still have quite a few, which is not at all helped by your meager +1 to CON.

She remains in this world; I can feel it - All the melee tools in the world don’t mean much when you lack any proper way to get close. You have Eldritch blast sure but beyond Dimension Door (which granted is very strong) enemies can easily keep their distance from the mad king with a big blade. Even if you want to use Dimension Door you have a very limited amount of spell slots.

But the world can only hide from the Ruination for so long. The black mist comes, and with it you come to search for your queen. Nothing can stop you; nothing will stop you until you have her again. The world shall be torn to shreds and shattered beyond repair, as long as you can have your queen... Or like, just find a Wish spell or something? Shame you’re a couple thousand years old because True Resurrection doesn’t even work anymore.

1.7 DEMURE | Sephiroth

A/N:  Here’s the chapter I promised! See you again on Sunday!!

Bitter

Kalista rubbed her hands on her shorts, taking another dry sip of wine as Adras and Daring took their leave from the lobby. Apparently Sephiroth had a few requests and Daring took them seriously, leading the now tipsy Adras from the safety of the yellow-painted lobby, and leaving Kalista alone with the man who left her asking for more the night before.

Despite her wishes, she wasn’t planning on seeing him. No choice words, no questions, just a reluctant lust not leaving her thoughts. She wanted Sephiroth to continue using her, letting those carnal pleasures get the better of her in a fit of trembling limbs and pitiful moans. He knew how to make her feel good, and she wanted it more now than ever, but her tongue stayed still as Sephiroth shut the lobby doors behind him. Leaving just the two of them to inhale the soiled oils of the paint together. 

The room suddenly got an eerie quiet, minus the heartbeat growing in her ears as his footsteps grew closer. How she dared not turn to even look at him, keeping her eyes straight towards the bar, legs crossed on the seat as his hand fell over the brushes she left on the table. Fingers coated in leather, and she imagined them in places they ought to be, drenched as they played with her.

“You have a problem with touching other people’s things,” Kalista said, finishing off the cup she stole back from Adras. Despite the taste, it was pleasantly smooth and it did its job. She felt far more relaxed than she had before, the alcohol making her fingers a bit numb and her lips a little fuzzy. Not enough for her to be shit-faced, but enough to endure the pestering of Sephiroth’s questions for a bit of time. “Not just things, might I add, my things.”

And she didn’t just mean the physical. Information was just as personal and far more private. 

“How long have you had these?” He asked, simple, with a small hint of curiosity looming in his voice. Before she could answer, he placed it back in its slot, with the rest as if he hadn’t even disturbed it. Merely inspecting, and she was certain he was doing the same with her. Toying with her until he really got what he wanted, whatever it was.

Kalista placed the glass of wine down, turning to him with a solemn smile. “Three years if you really needed to know.” She tried to keep the bitterness of her voice from creeping in, “birthday present if it’s so important.”

Her aching sarcasm had added the bonus of mischief in Sephiroth’s smile. It wasn’t enough to snap, but he could tell she was clearly angered at something, particularly at him with how swift her laughter with Adras changed to sore malice when she was left alone. How easily he could hear her crisp voice when he walked into the building, now suddenly disinterested and upset.

Kalista was obviously not the type to beg and plead, she liked the game as much as he did, and it was going to be interesting on who broke first. 

She finished off the glass before she could even get another taste of sharp alcohol coating her throat. It was sadly not enough.

“What are you doing here?” She asked, walking towards the corner bar, Sephiroth’s eyes focusing on her as she moved. “Daring never mentioned your schedule, I ought to know something, right?”

He hadn’t said a word, and it gave Kalista enough time to pour herself another glass of hard scotch. The one so old and so expensive it would pay off the inn for years, perhaps centuries. Daring kept it to impress the richer customers who would come in with millions of Gil lining their pockets as change, and he’d be beyond pissed knowing she was having a few sips of it without his permission, let alone almost half a glass to herself. 

Sephiroth’s deep voice filled her ears as she let the smooth drink cause her fingers to tingle, “I told you what I wanted.”

A smile crept on her face as Sephiroth’s brows furrowed at her next crude answer, “I didn’t cum. That was the deal was it not? My payment. Simple. No teasing, no begging, just let me feel good for a few minutes and I’ll answer whatever you want. Very straight forward, Sephiroth.”

The corners of his lips lifted up in such a devious way Kalista’s spine trembled. Almost as if she pressed the wrong button and now she was heading downwards instead of up. But it wasn’t what she had expected at all. He plainly loved hearing her say his name. How her tongue traced those vowels and left him wanting her to keep repeating it over and over again. It wasn’t enough to hear her moan. He wanted her to plead his name deep in the night.

His presence behind her left the same smile on both their faces for a few seconds. The footsteps stopped, and Kalista set the glass on the counter before she saw his fingers trace on the freckles on her wrist, now running up the bare skin of her arm in slow, calculated movements like he practiced on what ways to make her squirm. 

The back of his knuckle tracing her veins, very reminiscent to how Kalista’s fingers moved on his palms the night before. Soft, alluring, a wish for something more as he parted the strap of her tank top and bra, leaving on small kiss right in the dimple of her shoulder.

Kalista’s eyes shut as he moved her hair aside, hot breath heavy on her neck as his lips touched her flesh with delicate precision. Fingers in her hair, another at her wrist, both to keep her at bay long enough to get the reactions he wanted. 

She let out a small whimper as he kissed near her jaw, back to the area he had assaulted with his tongue numerous times before. Kalista couldn’t think except relish in the nerves skyrocketing at his inhuman touch. Wanting more, needing more despite the repercussions of last night, the possibility of someone walking through those doors, she wanted him to make her feel good right there, and how quickly he had moved his hand around her jaw, holding her face in place, she got her answer.

His fingers slowly traced on her protruding vein at her neck, pressing it ever so lightly to stop the blood flow. How Kalista swallowed at the sudden change in pace, but she wouldn’t be angry at the idea. Being choked by Sephiroth in just the right way sent pleasure running down to her intimate areas, she only wished it was a tad harder.

The whole idea of being utterly dominated was never something she was into. But Sephiroth, pleasing her in a number of ways, the ideas of him taking what he wanted, leaving her a stuttering mess as he did whatever he wanted, it turned her on. If someone came in they could watch how he so effortlessly screwed around with her, and she’d let them. 

A shiver ran down her spine as he pushed her into the counter. She wasn’t sure if it was the chill of the granite pressed on her flesh, or Sephiroth’s now bare fingers running up her legs, but she was trembling. She didn’t protest, she didn’t want to. Kalista was dreaming of being touched by him again, waiting until he could come and finish the job.

His lips found her ear, his voice laced with curiosity and a deep hunger that kept Kalista silent “have you really been waiting?”

She couldn’t help but nod in response, waiting until he slipped a hand down her shorts, immediately flicking at her clit without so much as a warning. She was already getting excited by the words he was speaking, but how he played with her made her mind go a bit cloudy as he went fast, pushing her harder into the granite counter until her knees were shaking.

Her fingers curled, the reflection of his smile shining in the glass of scotch. He whispered again, the deep growl that left her far more speechless than any physical touch, “simple is it?” He mocked her earlier statement, teeth nearly nipping at her ear, “say my name, and I’ll give you what you want.”

He inserted a single finger, then another, pumping in the right areas to make that familiar knot grow in the deep pit of her stomach. Her walls soaking his hand, dripping down her thigh as he asked her again. Say it, so simple, almost fascinated with how her legs trembled underneath him the longer he kept his fingers curled inside her, the sound of juices soaking her underwear and the quiet moans she let out with every inch pulling in and out of her.

She instinctively tried to shut her legs, but Sephiroth’s hands kept that from happening. Now pulling her back up, standing, his hand wrapped around her jaw, never losing a moment to finger her mercilessly. 

Her moans grew louder as he let his lips run down her neck pausing only at the area that truly made her squirm. Pitiful cries escaping from her throat, eyes shut closed as his tongue ran across her flesh, much more lustful than before.

“Sephiroth,” she gasped, breathing overtaking her as he went a bit faster. 

Just as he said, saying his name made him move quicker. Her mind going cloudy as she said it again. This time crying it out. Her arm curling behind his neck, head twisting to barely see the glazed look in his eye as she said it again. Much more confident, head filling with lack of blood and air as he never faltered. He knew how much she wanted it, how she craved it more than anything.

Now the two of them were both getting what they wanted.

Kalista felt the fire grew bigger as he continued to kiss her neck, her own fingers grabbing his hair, not wanting to let him go either. She needed him there, to finish her off. She was on edge the night before, nearly coming against his fingers in the time span they were together, now she was closer than ever, and she was planning on making him stay there as long as possible. 

His fingers kept going, the juices slipping down her thighs some more as she moaned his name again, holding onto his hair for support in case she would fall. The knot was growing, rabid, and deep into her core as Sephiroth let his finger hit the exact spot she wanted. Her feet were beginning to lose balance, her legs shaking as he felt her climax underneath him with one final breath of his name.

Kalista fell onto the counter as Sephiroth let her go, body shaking,  toes curled as she tried to regain her lost breath. Her skin had become flushed and legs now coated with her own mess as she tried to regain the feeling lost. 

Every nerve felt as if it was lit with fire. 

“I-” She couldn’t even speak, how he left her in a pitiful mess of lust. “I guess you get your answers.” She said. A deal was a deal, but she hadn’t expected him to make her feel like that.

“Hmm,” Sephiroth said, satisfaction coating his voice as his lips felt upon her ear again. “I’ll be waiting for you in your bedroom when you recover.”

Kalista took a deep breath. 

Oh, what games he had in store for her.

So, I’m gonna give you both my real birth name and my nickname because yeah haha. So my real name is Kalista (no. not with a “c”) and it means “Most beautiful” in greek. My nickname is Kali which can also mean “Most beautiful” but Kali is also a Hindu goddess which is cool. I honestly never knew that until about 9th grade. Kalista is too long and Kali is easier and faster to spell on homework pages so  that’s why I use it haha

Why is that my name? It’s my name because my grandma picked it out and I was almost named Daphne. Boring story, I know.

Pansy: What was your most memorable birthday? What made it be so memorable?

I don’t have any memorable birthdays. I think the one that always comes back to me is the one that was just not great. Everyone seemed to forget it and we were just really busy with things that day so it was kind of a bummer. Though, I will say that i’m not really one to worry about it, but it’s nice to get one small “happy birthday” on that day hahaha

S Tier

Xayah - I love Xayah’s design inside and out! She’s a great example of how you can design a sexy female champion that isn’t pure “male gaze.” I would totally get Xayah a tiny skull filled with twigs as a token of my admiration. Also, her lines with Rakan are awesome (”We’re eating chocolate!”)

Ivern trying his best - It doesn’t matter if you int as ADC Ivern, because the emotional support you bring your team just by picking such an amazing and wholesome character is invaluable.

Kindred - YAY!!! The W passive is back!

A Tier

Jhin - I love Jhin, but like any musical lead, he takes credit for the work of an entire invisible stage crew and ensemble (aka Rakan peeling Wukong off of him). By himself he’s useless, which not only means you die without a decent team, but also when he was newer and people weren’t used to him Jhin players would get accused of flaking out on teamfights because he has to be on like, the other side of the map. Also, if you know me you know Jhin is very special to me, but I think Jhin is to an interesting discussion on mental illness what Taliyah is to trans characters -- “it might upset people and it really doesn’t sell, so it’ll just be like a secret part of their identity!”

Draven - Honestly Dravens just tend to dominate. You’re never like, “Oh, a Draven. He does no damage.” Also, Primetime Draven is an amazing skin.

Lucian - I can’t play Lucian for shit, but I respect people who can! He has some great skins, and he can draw a smiley face with his bullets. I hope things get better for him.

Jinx - I don’t actually play Jinx, but I love her Odyssey and Star Guardian incarnations, and as someone who writes garbage League fanfiction for a pretend-living, Jinx makes for an amazing sidekick.

B Tier

Ezreal - Great personality. I mean, awful personality, but in a fun way. Lines for missing skillshots are a bonus. Debonair skin is a double bonus. His character is pretty simple, though on the other hand, it’s a nice change of pace to have a hot male character that you don’t have to genetically re-engineer into having romantic interest in your fanfictions ;T He’d be higher up but I’m low-elo support so when I play SR I’m always saddled with a feeding Ezreal.

Tristana - Tristana is a cutie pie! I used to main her when I first started! Explosions is still not a personality though. I like her new voice lines, but I have a fondness for the old ones and will forever miss them.

Kalista - Cool passive/ulti, and being I feel like whatever they were trying to do story-wise with Kalista they improved upon with Pyke, which makes Kalista kind of bland and useless in that regard.

Kai’Sa - I hate that they made her look like a supermodel but I do like her kit and her gentle personality. She’s one of the few characters in the middle of a spectrum between “fluffy cute happy champ” and “ANGERY SPIKY NO FRIENDS champ” where most tend to be solidly one or the other.

C Tier

Caitlyn - I like her kit. If Pulsefire Caitlyn were the actual Caitlyn, she would be higher up, but as-is her physical design is at best bland and at worst downright bizarre (miniskirt + ringleader hat = policewoman?!?!?) Also, until they give her a VGU, she gets minus points for Sheriff Caitlyn though, which is the only other Cait skin I have. It is an assault on the entire history of splash art.

Vayne, Varus - I have no real opinion on these ones

D Tier

Miss Fortune - Bikini ADC with no personality but a decent kit

Ashe, Sivir - Bikini ADC with no personality

Twitch - I guess I’m just not really big on animal characters, and no one’s allowed to be invisible except Evelynn!! GRRR!!

F---- Tier

Corki - LIMA OSCAR LIMA

Kog’Maw - Ugly, terrible personality, sucks to play against. Can’t respect when he gets a quadra or whatever because he doesn’t even have to move and Void monster champs usually have dumb character motivations.
