Watch Lady Chatterley's Lover (2022) and then Read...
I absolutely loved Lady Chatterley's Lover (2022). I think it was a triumph of the female gaze, Emma Corrin being the Period Piece Pinch Hitter we all need in a post-Keira world, and fucking in the woods.
To be clear, the book is not a romance. It does not end unhappily (more like "to be continued", without any intention of a continuation and clarification) but it's not a romance. The movie, I would argue... is pretty close to being a romance, or just a romance outright. Joely Richardson looks at the camera and goes "this is a love story", and by God, who am I to question Joely Richardson (who also was Lady Chatterley once). It hits many of the classic notes of a historical romance novel--hardcore fucking and immediately having an existential crisis after, "my god, how could this constant unprotected sex I'm having result in a PREGNANCY???", a douchey rich guy who wants to publish his stupid novella.
After watching it, I wanted to go through my rolodex of books and throw up some recommendations for what to read after watching this movie and getting a bit. Interested.
I tried to focus on a) interclass dynamics or b) illicit affairs. Ideally both, but it's more about the vibe than the readalike nature.
The Leopard Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. In many ways, a Lady Chatterley vibe without the annoying husband and *with* a murder mystery. Our heroine is a wealthy heiress who travels to an estate she recently inherited on her own, employing an experience steward to help her with the business side of things. And with the business side of things. Elizabeth Hoyt writes some of the best sex in the game, and there's a lot of great class conflict in this one.
Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath. A Lady Chatterley setup but with less class conflict and more *secrets*. The Duke of Ainsley, genteel and well-mannered, still feels real bad for that time he got into a carriage accident with his best friend, which resulted in said friend's permanent impotency. Friend asks Ainsley to pay him back by fucking his wife, Jayne, in order to ensure that she has the baby she's always wanted. Jayne is like "say what now", because she does in fact hold the accident against Ainsley, and Ainsley is all "I COULD NEVER--but if you're like... insisting..." because of course, he has always carried a torch for Jayne. A month of hot, angsty, "don't kiss me on the mouth" cottage sex ensues, and the emotional fallout for these idiots is MAGNIFICENT.
The Countess by Sophie Jordan. Not out yet, but put this one on your TBR because there is certainly a married lady discovering her sexuality in the arms of another man (wealthy, but of a different social class) around these parts. Out 3/28/23.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath. For the "this coarse man is lighting my ladylike fires" vibe. Our heroine is a recently widowed duchess with a young son, who comes to find out that--what the fuck--her husband left the guardianship of their child to a man she doesn't even fucking know. The hero grew up on the streets and has risen to become a successful club owner, but is still very much lower class. They move in together, and incredible sexual tension and heightened emotions ensue. TW: discussion of childhood sexual abuse.
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas. This might seem a bit left field at first, but I shall recommend it because a) there is a huge emphasis on class in this novel. Sara is not necessarily a hugely upper class lady, but she is a genteel lady, and Derek Craven's awareness of their social differences and his roughness against her softness is a huge part of their conflict in the first half of the book. B) sexual awakening is very emphasized in Sara's journey. C) Sara does have a boring fucking fiance who's like "Sara, it's okay if we aren't that into each other sexually" while Sara, having just gotten her titties sucked at a party, is like "UHHHHHH NO THAT IS NOT OKAY". D) Much like Oliver Mellors, Derek Craven suffers from "is very smart but sometimes we don't know what he's saying" syndrome.
Duchess by Day, Mistress by Night by Stacy Reid. Our heroine is another widowed duchess with a young son--but this time, she's on the hunt for the governess that ditched in a flash. She hires the coarse, lower class but nonetheless successful fixer in town to help her... And his price ends up being a bit more carnal than monetary. VERY illicit affairs dot mp3.
Notorious Pleasures by Elizabeth Hoyt. No class difference here, but we do have a lot of illicit sneaking around when our heroine begins sleeping with her betrothed's roguish brother--who might just fuck the rigid rule following sensibility right out of her.
Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy. A widow has a one night stand with a handsome stranger, only to discover that he's courting her stepdaughter. It's messy, it's angsty, it's hot, and I do believe there are some outdoor activities.
#romance novel blogging#lady chatterley's lover#if there are more i think of i'll update it but#go read about people getting sneakily laid#i suspect again the magic can also hit some of these beats but i'm saving that so

MAXIMILIANO I & CHARLOTTE
The Royal Wedding of the Emperor of Mexico and a Princess of Belgium...
(married 1857)
pictured above is a montage portrait of the Empress and Emperor of Mexico, made of photographs by Andrew Burgess from 1864
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
SERIES - On this day July Edition: Maximiliano and Charlotte were married on 27 July 1857.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
FERDINAND MAXIMILIAN was the second son of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and Princess Sophie Friederike of Bavaria. As a member of the HOUSE OF HABSBURG-LORRAINE he was an ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA from his birth in 1832.
MARIE CHARLOTTE AMÉLIE AUGUSTINE VICTOIRE CLÉMENTINE LÉOPOLDINE was the only daughter of Leopold I, King of the Belgians and Princess Louise of Orléans, and thus was a member of the Belgian branch of the HOUSE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA. From her birth in 1840 she was a PRINCESS OF BELGIUM and also a PRINCESS OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA.
They first met in 1856 and it is said that the Princess was fascinated with the Archduke, so her father let her choose if she wanted to marry him. Negotiations for their wedding began shortly and by the end of the year their engagement was announced.
Before they were married, his brother Franz I Joseph, Emperor of Austria decided that he would become the new VICEROY OF LOMBARDY-VENETIA.
Their wedding took place on 27 July 1857, at the Royal Palace in Brussels, and they soon moved to Milan, the capital of Lombardy-Venetia. They did not have any children.
pictured above is a painting of the wedding ceremony of the Archduke of Austria and the Princess of Belgium, by Cesare Dell’Acqua from c. 1857
After their wedding she became and ARCHDUCHESS OF AUSTRIA and the VICEREINE OF LOMBARDY-VENETIA.
However, Emperor Franz I dismissed the Archduke from the Viceroyalty post in 1859. After which they moved to Trieste, to the under construction Miramare Castle, on the Gulf of Trieste.
By the early 1860s France set a series of interventions in Mexico and the Archduke was invited to become Emperor by the Mexican nobility and later by Napoléon III, Emperor of the French. He accepted and was acclaimed MAXIMILIAN I, EMPEROR OF MEXICO in 1864, of the newly created Second Empire of Mexico, and she became his EMPRESS CONSORT.
The couple lived in Mexico for three years before the French retreated and left. There they adopted two boys (check the list below), who were grandsons of Agustín of Iturbide, the former Emperor of Mexico.
When the French retreated the Empress traveled to Europe to try to persuade Emperor Napoléon III to return, but she was not able to convince him.
So, in 1867, Mexican Republican forces captured the Emperor senteced him to death, after which the second and last Emperor of Mexico was executed.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
While all of this was happening, the former Empress was still in Europe suffering a mental breakdown, after the French denied help for them.
For a while the former Empress was not told of her husband's fate, at least until she was finally settled back in Belgium by 1868.
She brought their adoptive sons to Europe and never remarried, outliving her husband for 60 years. The former Empress of Mexico died of pneumonia only 1927.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
MAXIMILIANO I and CHARLOTTE adopted two children...
Agustín of Iturbide and Green - husband first of Lucy Eleanor Jackson and second of Mary Louise Kearney; and
Salvador of Iturbide and Marzán - husband of Baroness Gizella Mikos of Taródháza.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
Did you ever know that Mexico had an European Emperor?

Saturday 26 May 1838
8
12 ¼
fine morning F61 ½° at 8 ½ am A- went to the cathedral about 8 or after to sketch the interior and returned at 9 35 – I sat writing till 10 – then breakfast – changed our room – from the small one to the next adjoining a large very good room and breakfasting and moving our things till 12 – our garçon Paul Voisin a nice civil good countenanced unmarried aetatis 31 man from Lyons – does not like here – would be glad to be in a private house again – would be glad to go with us – lived 15 years with la marquise de Montague – was then in the army – then not getting a good place at Lyons came to Paris and from there here – in bed at 12 or 2 and up at 4 – so hard a place, nobody could stay long – he makes 800fr. a year – but would rather have less in a different place – had 350 fr. a year with the marquise de M- and livery – she lived in the r. de la université, but is not now in Paris – lives in the country – A- and I out at 12 35 – took a commissionaire to shew us the way, and then sent him home – Mr. Mumm or somebody, a very civil young man, protestant it seemed, and speaking English very fairly – a German shewed us over the cellars, and afterwards shewed us into a large good salon, and gave us champagne and biscuits – the wine Mousseux and very fair but not so good as Moets’ of Epernay in 1833. should I have as good of Moet at 3/. a bottle? ordered a dozen of his 1ere qualité at 4/50 per bottle to be sent off on Monday and would be in Paris on Tuesday or Wednesday to my address rue St. Victor n° 27 à Paris – thought we might get this dozen over to England for Lady Stuart – en petite cadeau – about an hour at the cellars (at Mr. Mumms’) underground and above – 3 stories of cellars to the depth of 36 to 40 ft. ventilated by grates communicating from the bottom cellar to the top – each story divided into separate vaults perhaps the loftiest 7 or 8ft. high in the centre – perhaps 4 or 5 yards wide and 20+ long – in the lowest story 3 men corking – one filling up the bottles – another putting in the cork, and driving it down with a machine (has only had it about 15 months) on the principle of a corn or button-stamping machine, and the 3rd man tying down the corks, (the tightness gained by a small steel thing round which the string is turned and held fast while the other end is pulled tight) – It is not long since everybody left off gaudon (rosin) and covered the corks with lead-paper – a great improvement
Monday 28 May 1838. no good wine in champagne says our landlord of the Ecu at Epernay since the year 1834.
asked for champagne tranquille – cannot have it now – not till next year – not ripe enough now – that of 1834 will not be ripe till next year – taken with the double-incline clearing racks the bottles ranged in an angle = about 25°? require turning twice a day for 2 or 3 weeks till all the sediment has sunk down to the cork – then the cork taken out (a difficult operation saw it done) and with the cork out gushes the sediment in the froth that escapes and the bottle being refilled is immediately re-corked – vintage in October – wine remains in cash till April May or June – about 6 months – Mr. Mumm has no vineyards of his own – buys the grapes – shewed us his great ton = 19,000 bottles = 70 such casks as we saw lying about – sends wine to America in boxes containing 12 bottles and 50 ditto has a house in London, Francfort and Cologne – Inquired respecting the ventilation of cellars – he said wine should have good pure air – Madeira should be kept warm and may do without air, but good air cannot do it any harm if the temperature be attended to – the breakage of champagne = 50p.c. the time of year now coming on – best to order champagne for a years’ consumption – should not be kept too long – he owned that the Bordeaux wines (Claret) for the English market were mixed with hermitage and brandy – on leaving Mr. Mumms’ at 1 55 sauntered in the little Jardin des Plantes – nothing particular in it – 2 or 3 little serres, not much in them – then to the Cours the very nice shaded promenades – then Champs Elysées of Rheims – very pretty cool and pleasant (hot and very fine sun today) sat there writing in pencil in my rough note book all the above of today till now 2 ¾ - and then to the cemetery close by – i.e. close by the Porte de Mars leading to Flanders (the gate by which we entered yesterday) and the ‘Mission’ i.e. croix de la mission erected in 1825, and now turned to a monument to the memory of the brave who died fighting for the liberty of France (viz. the revolutions of the 3 days of July 1830) – sometime in the cemetery spite of boiling sun – among the tombeaux and epitaphs one of the latter by a father to the memory of his daughter, Marie Antoniette Sophie l’Inglois decêdée Thursday 5 December 1822 dans sa 21me année – after 10 foregoing lines ends thus
‘ô mon chere enfant, attends en paix
ce père malheureux ! attends-le sous cette terre
Qui d’après un homme religieux et sensible,
‘n’est que la cendre des morts pétrie avec les larmes
de vivans’ pretty idea
not aware at this moment that the ancien porte de Mars (arc de triomphe of the Romans) was so near
from the cemetery thro’ the streets and marché to the palais archiépiscopale
the archbishop M. le cardinal de Couci set off to Paris a day or 2 before the outburst of the revolution of July 1830, and has never been here since – at Goritz with the ex-royal family – the bishop of Numidie does the duties of the archbishop – the archbishop much regretted – a very good man – did a great deal of good –the palais worth seeing the grande salle surrounded by the pictures of the king crowned here from Clavis downwards very handsome – pity that damp is spoiling some of the pictures e.g. Louis XVI. at the end of the salle – Charles X. taken away – the picture still in the palais but his place in the salle vacant, and several fleurs de lis here and there defaced – (as also the fleurs de lis on the shield of Louis 15 in the Place royale – how puerile!) – the grande salle 130x36 pieds and height = about 36 pieds up to the square – ceiling domed – large poutres (beams) across the room partly gilt with 2 rings in each beam towards the side of the room for suspending 2 chandeliers – 4 windows on each side the great entrance door by flight of steps from without – 4 doors on the opposite side of the room – the great fire-place at the end of the room and over it St. Remy crowning Clovis – shewn into what Charles x intended turning into the chapel – the painted glass windows put in – but all stopt by the revolution – this place was the palais de justice after the revolution of 1789 and 3 stories of prisonniers were in this very spot – the duke of Orelans was lately at our hotel (the Lyon d’or) but did not see the Palace – no! said I, he is still a Bourbon, and the sight could not be agreeable – from here went home at 4 ½ for A- to have wine and biscuit and then out again at 4 52 and off to the church of St. Remy – a 20 minutes walk and there at 5 ¼ - under repair – expected to be done in 2 years from this time – very curious old church – the whole of the nave boarded off – had been new roofed and now full of workmen – 2 stories of double aisle round the apsis and choir and a narrow gallery above the upper story immediately under the painted windows – do not remember to have seen this sort of 2 storied double-aisle – went up to the upper story – same dimensions apparently even as high as the story below – the vitreaux – (painted glass) – very ancient – date not known – supposed to be as old as the church – evidently very ancient – all the ceilings of aisles and choir stone-work plastered and painted in imitation of brick-work – the new vaulting (new roof of the nave) done in wood – the old stone roof too heavy on the walls – the 2 stories of double aisle run all round the nave too – see as we return, that the new roof is not quite so steep as the old one – as seen from the old walls of the town the eves are all in one line but the ridge of the old roof of the choir is about 3ft. higher than the ridge of the new roof of the nave – just peeped into the nave after having seen the high altar and chasse containing the relies of St. Remy – the chasse of solid silver before the revolution of 1789 – now of cuivre argenté – the relies exposed to the faithful

for 9 days in October every year – the figures round the high altar not finished sculptured at the back because stood originally against a wall – done under the orders of a cardinal of Lorraine 300 or 400 years ago – interesting as representing in marble statues the 6 ecclesiastical and 6 lay paises de France and their officers who assisted at the sacres (coronations) of the kings of France – looking towards the altar

immediately at the back of the altar in the space between the last Evêque and last court is a St. Remy seated in his archiepiscopal robes and mitre teaching Clovis kneeling at his feel and a Diacre or assistant holding the cosier and an open book – Left the church (much interested) at 6 20 – sauntered back along the boulevard very lately planted with young elms – cart road in the middle and 2 allées (promenades) (old rampart) the Vesle river running close along its foot on the other side the old wall – on our right towards the town, great deal of garden ground – pépinières and sale vegetable gardens – delighted with our walk back – nowhere such good views of the exterior of the cathedral – too short – too lumping as a whole – wants the lantern tower the lengthiness of York minster, and its freedom from flying buttresses at the east end which look like steps to graduate the high roof gently down to the ground – the effect of this is bad – as if the building could not support its height at that end – never travel without a view of York minster – take it all in all, has it an equal in the world? when very near our hotel at 7 the light so beautiful on the cathedral turned into a courtyard for a better view – the gentleman of the house civilly asked us in and the wife shewed us in the garden – she said the effect would be still better in about an hour – she regretted the great numeros of pigeons jackdaws, crows etc that inhabited the exterior of the building – to us these birds give life to the scene and improve the picturesque – she said the crows assembled on the wire all along the ridge of the roof so as sometimes to form an almost continuous line from end to end, and all regularly flew away to les champs at 9pm – as good as a clock for 9pm we inquired about Mr. Mumm as to the street in which he lived – she did not know the name – supposed we had seen the cellars of Mr. Muller or Mr. Roeder (a German we said he spoke English well and was a protestant) – asked who was really the most renommé négociant en vins in Reims – Madame Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin- I said the town was full of dyers – yes! but only 6 or 7 great dyers in the town – It turned out her husband was a dyer and also a wine merchant – she said we ought to see les filatures en laine (woollen spinning mills) – it seems they have power looms here – she says trade has been very bad, but is now reviving or revived and pretty goof again – Had ordered dinner at 7 – not in till 7 ½ - dinner immediately but the lateness an excuse for a bad dinner – no épinards – nothing left – I sent for one mutton cutlet for I had literally nothing but cold fish not eating the bit of beef or the little redone overdone poulet or asparagus – sat over dinner and dessert till 10 – then wrote till 11 – very fine day – F67° at 11 pm

a bit of a weird/specific ask... but do you have any recs for both historical and contemporary romance with pregnant sex? bonus point if there's a breeding kink going on honestly....
Not weird at all! I only wish that I had more preggers sex books to offer, I love that shit (in books... to be clear).
Historical:
The Footman by S.M. LaViolette. There is pregnant sex in the back half of the book, and a lovely passage wherein Stephen Worth thinks about how hot it is to fuck someone carrying your baby. While he fantasizes about eating her out, he's like "I hope she's SHOWING".
Return to Monte Carlo by Cate C. Wells. This is technically historical as it's set in the 80s, but, you know. The heroine realizes she's pregnant early on and there's a lot of graphic pregnancy sex. Including one scene where he's like, giving it to her vERY roughly (rough sex is their thing) but she realizes during that he's like... steering her... so that her belly isn't bumping against a countertop or something. It's like "awwww" but also "oh".
This Scot of Mine by Sophie Jordan. I don't remember this one SUPER well (besides the fact that I liked it a lot) but the plot is bonkers. The heroine is pretending to be pregnant out of wedlock to escape a bad match, and the hero is all "oh I'll for sure marry you" because every man in his family is cursed to die before his first child is born; so he's like, if I marry a pregnant woman and claim her baby, I'll have an heir and it'll all be good". She doesn't know this, so they have sex on the wedding night (him thinking it's safe because she can't get pregnant twice)... he realizes she's a virgin and is PISSED, she gets pregnant, and is pregnant for the rest of the book, during which sex occurs.
The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. GORILLA TWINS. No p in v sex, but hand stuff for both does occur before the baby is born. And the heroine is explicitly like "I am actually super horny because pregnant, I am dying here", not realizing that the reason he won't have sex with her is that it's nOT HER HUSBAND IT'S HIS IDENTICAL TWIN BECAUSE THE HUSBAND GOT KILLED BY A GORILLA.
The Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe. I think this has pregnancy sex? The heroine is in an unconsummated marriage, and she finds her estranged husband (who saw her like, once, and never in the six years since) while disguised as a courtesan to seduce him into getting her pregnant. She succeeds, but after she leaves he's tipped off to that being his wife and shows up and is all "HELLO MY DEAR" (it's very hot). He's mad, and I'm pretty sure this leads to... fucking.
The Viscount and The Vixen by Lorraine Heath. There is pregnancy sex (the heroine is pregnant early on) but the hero doesn't initially know. Like, she's pregnant in every sex scene, but he isn't AWARE in every sex scene, lol.
Scandal's Bride by Stephanie Laurens. The heroine gets pregnant early on, very intentionally--and the hero kNOWS she wants to get pregnant (after a certain point), so there is a breeding vibe here. She doesn't immediately tell him so HE doesn't know it's pregnancy sex at first, but like. There's definitely plenty of pregnancy sex lol.
The Recruit by Monica McCarty. SOOOOO much pregnancy sex. The heroine gets pregnant by the hero in a one time thing early on, and he doesn't know and she's determined not to marry him for Reasons. But he finds her after a few months and accidentally touches her belly and Detects Pregnancy, so the obvious answer is to force a marriage because No Son Of Mine-- Anyway, there's a LOT of pregnancy sex in this one lol. Not all of these books have "I have a bump out to here" sex, but this one... if that's what you're looking for.... has that....
Melissa and The Vicar by S.M. LaViolette. Melissa is pregnant for much of the back half of the book, and while Magnus doesn't initially know, there's a lot of pregnancy sex subsequently. Including some pretty adventurous stuff for a vicar who was a virgin until two seconds ago.
Contemporary:
Nobody's Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. The entire plot hinges around the heroine getting pregnant on purpose (not to trap the hero... it's insane). When he finds out she's knocked up, he's PISSED but is all "no child of mine is going to be a bastard" and forces her to marry him. THEN they actually fall in love, and there's a good it of pregnancy sex.
A Holly Jolly Ever After by Sierra Simone and Julie Murphy has some pregnancy sex after an Oops occurs. It's quite hot.
If you're open to mafia romance, Mafia Darling, the direct sequel to Mafia Mistress (both by Mila Finelli) has a pregnant heroine (she got pregnant during Mistress). There's a LOT of sex, and some breeding stuff. Because Fausto and Frankie are freaks. Darling can't be read as a standalone, however.
#romance novel blogging#romance novels#book recs#nobody:#stephen worth: i think the hottest thing a woman can do is be full with my child

"CLASS OF '61" (1993) Review
"CLASS OF '61" (1993) Review Twenty-six years, ABC Television aired the pilot episode for an American war drama about the U.S. Civil War. Written by Jonas McCord, "CLASS OF '61" told the story about three West Point graduates from the class of 1861, who found themselves on opposites sides following the outbreak of war.
I have a few corrections to make. "CLASS OF '61" told the story about one West Point graduate, an Irish immigrant named Devlin O'Neil of Baltimore, and one cadet who had dropped out of the Academy following the outbreak of war, Shelby Peyton of Virginia. And the third man turned out to be a young George Armstrong Custer, who did graduate with the Class of '61, but only served as a supporting character in this production. Actually, the third major character in "CLASS OF '61" is a young man named Lucius, who happened to be a slave owned by Shelby's father, a doctor and plantation owner. The movie followed Devlin, Shelby, Lucius and yes, even young Custer from that last day of peace before the bombardment of Fort Sumter to the waning moment of the Battle of Bull Run (or Manassas). After Shelby dropped out of West Point, following the Fort Sumter bombardment and surrender, Shelby Peyton visits Devlin O'Neil's home in Baltimore and discovers that the latter's father has withdrawn his permission for Shelby to marry Devlin's sister, Shannon, due to Shelby's decision to follow his state into the Confederacy. Shelby also discovers that Devlin and Shannon's younger brother, Terry, has joined a local street mob that happened to be pro-Confederate. After participating in the Pratt Street Riot on April 19, 1861; Terry ends up temporarily imprisoned at Fort McHenry before heading south to join the Confederate Army. Following his graduation from West Point, Devlin experiences difficulty in receiving an Army assignment, due to Terry's actions. Devlin meets a Virginia belle from nearby Alexandria named Lily Magraw at a soirée hosted by long-time Washington socialite named Rose O'Neal Greenhow. Unbeknownst to Devil, both Lily and Mrs. Greenhow are Confederate spies. Shelby's friendship with his father's slave Lucius is tested due to the latter's brief attempt to escape slavery with his pregnant wife, Lavinia. After killing one (or two) of the slave catchers who had spotted him, Lucius is forced to leave the Shelby plantation without his wife and head north via the Underground Railroad. One would immediately notice that "CLASS OF '61" has no main narrative other than a handful of major characters experiencing the first three months of the U.S. Civil War. That is because this 93-minute movie was supposed to serve as a pilot for a new series . . . which never materialized. But this loose narrative structure featuring a handful of plot lines did not deter me from enjoying the production. When I first saw "CLASS OF '61", I was in the throes of an obsession for the U.S. Civil War. An obsession that has not abated with time, I might add. There is a possibility that due to this obsession, I may have viewed "CLASS OF '61" through rose-colored glasses when I first saw it. Do not get me wrong. I still managed to enjoy it. But due to the "sands of time", I have finally noticed the flaws. "CLASS OF '61" has a great deal of virtues. Its biggest virtue seemed to be the cast. The television pilot featured many young players who would eventually become well known or major stars. Dan Futterman, an excellent character actor in his own right and a two-time Academy Award nominated screenwriter, gave a complex performance as Shelby Peyton. Clive Owen, who became a bigger star, gave an emotional performance as Devlin O'Neil, the Irish immigrant torn between his friendship with Peyton and his family's patriotism toward their new country. Andre Braugher was already somewhat known for his performance in the 1989 movie, "GLORY", when he shot this pilot. He eventually became a major television star and has received numerous nominations and won two Emmys for his work. Frankly, I thought he gave the best performance in the production as the embittered Virginia slave whose initial attempt to escape slavery would lead to him being apart from his wife and mother for several years. The television movie also featured solid performances from the like of Josh Lucas (as George C. Custer) Dana Ivey, Penny Johnson, Sue-Ann Leeds, Barry Cullison, Peter Murnik, Timothy Scott, Stephen Root, Christien Anholt and Andrew Stahl. However, I believe there were better supporting performances. One came from Sophie Ward, who gave a poignant performance as Devlin's sister Shannon. Beverly Todd was excellent as Lucius' pragmatic mother. Mark Pelligrino gave a very interesting performance as a fellow cadet from South Carolina named Skinner, especially in a scene in which the character provided off-putting instructions on how to breed healthy slaves to the discomfort of the Peytons. Robert Newman gave an intelligent performance as one of the main characters' West Point instructors who become a Union artillery officer, Captain Wykoff. Len Cariou was effective as Shelby's warm and intelligent father, Dr. Leland Peyton. Lorraine Toussaint shone brilliantly in her brief role as a slave woman named Sarah, who was accompanying her mistress on a southbound train also conveying Shelby had encountered on a southbound train from New York City. Niall O'Brien gave a very complex performance as Devlin and Shannon's emotionally patriotic father, James O'Neil. The production values for "CLASS OF '61" struck me as solid, but not particularly top-notch. Although the movie's setting stretched from West Point, New York to the Peyton plantation outside of Richmond, Virginia; it was easy for me to see that the television movie was set in South Carolina and Georgia . . . in the Deep South. I have noticed that many of these productions with an Antebellum or Civil War setting are shot in the Deep South states, even the narratives are set in the Upper South. Has the Upper South been developed too extensively to serve as locations for such movies? I found Michael T. Boyd's costumes for the women characters very attractive and nearly accurate. However, I thought the men's costumes looked as if they had came straight from a costume warehouse in Hollywood. Recently, I had come across an old review of "CLASS OF '61". The New York Times reviewer seemed to dismiss the production as a nostalgic television movie with a failed plot. He seemed unaware that the movie was basically a pilot for a potential television series. When I first saw the movie, I knew that this was basically a pilot. Which is why I was not that surprised that it ended with the Battle of Bull Run without any of the plot lines being resolved. As for "CLASS OF '61" being nostalgic . . . I am not sure about that criticism. Jonas McCord's narrative seemed to be a mixture of a straight forward look at how Americans behaved and spoke during this tumultuous period in 19th century American history and a slightly critical look at their society. And I found its portrayal of the Bull Run battle rather interesting and detailed. However, the television movie featured a good deal more criticism of Northern racism and the Abraham Lincoln Administration. Shelby's encounter with an abolitionist, a Maryland woman and her enslaved maid led to the latter's soliloquy about the racism she had encountered in New York City. And another scene featured Devlin revealing his family troubles to Lily Magraw and Rose Greenhow - namely brother Terry's incarceration inside Baltimore's Fort McHenry and how this led to his failure to being assigned to an Army regiment. I must admit that I found it odd that McCord seemed to focus so much on the flaws of Northern society and the Lincoln's Administration . . . and not on the flaws of Confederate President Jefferson Davis' own administration. After all, the state of Virginia had lost its northwestern counties during the three-month period between Fort Sumter and Bull Run, due to its citizens breaking away from the state. Considering that Shelby's family lived in Virginia, I found it rather odd that western Virginia's break from the state was never mentioned. On the other hand, the series did focus a great deal on slavery. Although the Peyton family were portrayed as kind slave owners who almost treated their slaves as family, the movie still managed to portray their role in slavery as something to condemn - especially through Lucius' bitterness over being a slave, the patronizing manner of Dr. Peyton's kindness and Shelby's inability to understand Lucius' desire for freedom or lack of faith in the latter's ability to survive as a free man. I have noticed in many other productions about slavery during the Antebellum period or the Civil War, slave owners are either portrayed as kind or cruel . . . with no ambiguity in between. I must applaud McCord for his more ambiguous portrayal of Shelby and his family in regard to the slavery topic. Were there aspects of "CLASS OF '61" that troubled me? Well . . . yes. There were a few things. When Devlin was first introduced to Rose Greenhow at her soirée, the latter revealed that she knew a great deal about him - including where his family lived and his ranking among the West Point Class of '61. I am sorry, but I found this hard to swallow. Was this McCord's idea of conveying Mrs. Greenhow's greatness as a spy? Why on earth would she have bothered to collect so much information on a recent West Point graduate who had ranked in the middle of his class? Seriously? Also in the movie, Mr. O'Neil had accused a visiting Shelby of joining a volunteer regiment called the Palmetto Guards. Earlier in the production, a cadet named Upton had accused the South Carolinian Skinner of doing the same right after the news of Sumter was announced. So I checked the Internet and discovered that "Palmetto Guards" was one of the nicknames for the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. I could understand Skinner being considered for this regiment. But why on earth would Mr. O'Neil accuse Shelby, a Virginian, of joining it? Unsurprisingly, "CLASS OF '61" had failed to be picked up as a series. But imagine my surprise to discover that McCord had added a brief epilogue to reveal the characters' fates. He must have been very bitter over the pilot's fate, because he had committed some kind of "Scorch Earth" policy on the characters. Only three or four of them had survived the war . . . and one of them was George Armstrong Custer. Worse, two of his characters died in a way that was historically impossible. Ironically, my biggest problem with "CLASS OF '61" proved to be Shelby and Lucius' friendship. Now I realize that human beings are ambiguous creatures. And I am also aware that some complex friendships or relationships may have formed between slaves and the owners - especially relationships that began in childhood, like Shelby and Lucius. But there were aspects of the pair's friendship that struck me as unrealistic. I found it unrealistic that Lucius would honestly express his bitterness over being a slave to Shelby, of all people. I also found it unrealistic that Lucius would tell Shelby about his lethal encounter with those slave catchers. The movie never portrayed Shelby as someone with pro-abolitionist leanings. And although he was friendly and familiar with his father's slaves, he also shared Dr. Peyton's patronizing attitude. It just seemed unnatural that Shelby would react with nothing more than mere surprise after Lucius had confessed to killing two slave catchers. I do not care how friendly he was with Lucius or any of the other Peyton slaves. He still harbored a good deal of his society's casual racism and I could not see him allowing Lucius to leave the plantation after that confession. Even after twenty-six years, I still managed to enjoy "CLASS OF '61" Despite its flaws, the television movie managed to be an interesting and enjoying look into American society during the first three months of the U.S. Civil War. I thought Jonas McCord provided an interesting, yet inconclusive plot that showcased a first-rate cast starring Dan Futterman and Clive Owen. It is a pity that this pilot never became a series.

ASMR: business or therapy?
As was mentioned before, many Youtube-users have realized that ASMR was an extremely popular trend. But how do ASMR bloggers turn "sensual" ASMR videos into a very profitable business?
British student Sophie Michelle for the year earned more than 5 million rubles on video in ASMR format, where she communicates with the audience in a whisper. She received such income from advertising, which she placed during the commercials. Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTjmsLT64HoxLiTzaAcytiw
ASMR videos are made not only by adults, but even by children and earn money from them. 13-year-old Makenna Kelly shoots ASMR videos for her channel Life with MaK. Now 1.3 million people have signed up for it. In the most watched videos, Makenna eats instant noodles and drives the makeup brushes around the microphone. According to SocialBlade, ads on Life with MaK can earn from $ 1,000 per day. Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC88Qzl8DnaiR0Pxadh56iQw
Many of the currently popular Youtube-bloggers gave interviews to various online newspapers, talking about what ASMR is, why it is so popular, and how ASMRtists relate to the production and consumption of ASMP content.
But… wait a second… ASMR, is it all about business? Let us remind you once again what ASMR is. ASMR, which stands for autonomous sensory meridian response, is a feeling of relaxation, characterised by a tingling sensation, which can be triggered by certain soothing stimuli such as whispering or the sound of crinkling fabric. As various surveys show, people turn to ASMR to fight anxiety, to relax and / or to fall asleep [4], [5].
However, there are people who consider the practice of ASMR, if not deviant, then at least simply strange. They not only express their opinions on the Internet, but also some of them can influence a wide audience due to their popularity, ridiculing and criticizing consumers of ASMR content. Oksana Moroz, the Russian culturologist, talks about whether the practice of ASMR is deviant or not, we will write about her in one of the following posts. But let’s turn back to how celebrities laugh at the practice of ASMR. The most striking example is Lorraine Kelly, a British television presenter who called ASMR “ridiculous” in her show. Twitter users who are fans of ASMR said they were "enraged" by her criticism of the technology, while one said that she should "educate herself." Lorraine said: “Have you ever heard the most ridiculous thing in all your life?” Such a tactless statement ran into a wave of indignation among ASMR fans, especially on Twitter. It is worth noting that many people mentioned the fact that ASMR helps them and / or their friends to deal with anxiety.
Those people who did not talk about ASMR as a way to deal with anxiety noted that ASMR is a great way to relax, which should not be ridiculed.
People also share their thoughts about ASMR and about what health problems it can help to fight, in various forums and in comments on various articles on the Internet [3].
Can ASMR be considered as a therapy to struggle with problems such as insomnia? Is it possible in this case to say that ASMR is a therapy?
But what really happens? Is ASMR a fighter with any mental issues or insomnia? Or is it just a business where ASMRtists and brands earn a lot of money without thinking about why anyone needs such content?
First of all, let’s turn to the term insomnia. What is it? Insomnia is defined by the presence of difficulties with sleep. Almost half of adults suffering from insomnia also have various mental issues, especially depression [6]. Prevalence of insomnia ranges from 10 to 15% among the general population, also women and older people are more prone to insomnia [7]. As a rule, insomnia is treated with therapy and medications, the choice of which depends on several factors [8]. From here we are wondering if simple videos with quiet sounds can help in the fight against poor quality and amount of sleep?
Unfortunately, we did not find scientific confirmation of this. One of the scientific papers of Giulia Poerio, which is so-called “Could Insomnia Be Relieved with a YouTube Video? The Relaxation and Calm of ASMR” [9], however does not answer the question of whether insomnia can be alleviated by ASMR or not. All cases when people say that ASMR helps them in the fight against insomnia are not scientifically proven and are personal experience and personal feelings.
