alessia is adamant that shes straight, she just likes kissing you sometimes, and she just likes holding your hand, and she only likes it when you talk to her

“i love you.”

alessia is drunk- her cheeks are flushed, and her speech is slightly slurred, she’s teetering on the edge of completely falling over, the only thing stopping her is the door she’s leaning on.

“no like- seriously, i love, love you.”

you send her a small, tight-lipped smile- your head thumping back against the mirror of the bathroom counter you’re sat on.

it’s cramped in the small room- there’s only so many things you can look at to avoid staring into alessia’s eyes.

still, you avert your eyes from hers nodding your head. gripping the cup in your hands tighter as she inches closer to you.

a tight coil snakes its way into your chest and you sigh heavily.

“i love you too less.”

it’s not a lie- far from it in fact, you love her, you have since you were seventeen.

and alessia loves you too, only in private- when no one’s looking, stealing kisses from you late at night, and leaving you as soon as the sun comes up again.

drunken confessions, promises, and pleas- swearing to love you- and only you.

it’s all in vain though, as soon as the alcohol wears off and her phone pings with a new text from her boyfriend- she’s off without another word.

“i’m going to kiss you now.”

she falls into you- her hands finding themselves on top of your thighs to balance herself, her face inches away from you.

“less… you’ve got a boyf-“

and suddenly- all you can taste is the lingering tequila on her lips, all you can smell is her strawberry perfume, and all you can feel are her hands gripping your thighs tighter.

and you kiss her back again- cause maybe you’re a little drunk too, and maybe, no matter how much you try to stop yourself, you’re pathetic, and you love alessia.

she pulls away suddenly- her lips a little swollen and a dazed look in her eyes, her eyebrow furrows in concentration before a huge grin spreads across her face.

“oh my gosh­- i love this song!”

she grabs your hand- dragging you off the counter and out the bathroom.

the flat is cramped with people- a pre-season party thrown to celebrate the start of the new season.

and everyone is way too drunk and way too far gone to notice the way alessia keeps herself attached to you.

she’s swaying with you- despite the fast pace of the song, she has you wrapped up in her arms and rocks you slowly.

“less i think it’s time for you to go home.”

“but I want to stay with you- i love you.”

she’s looking into your eyes now- genuine and raw, but you know how this will go.

she’ll come back with you.

she’ll kiss you a little more.

then, she’ll fall asleep in your bed- you’ll take the couch of course.

and then; you’ll wake up to the sound of your flat door closing, the first rays of the sun filtering through the cracks in your blinds.

you know it’s a losing battle trying to find a way to say no to her.

“okay- come on, let’s get back to mine”

like always you wake up just as the door closes- flopping back onto the couch with a defeated sigh.

now you know the next part will go a little something like this;

she’ll ignore you for a few days.

she’ll make a big deal of missing her boyfriend.

she’ll be on the phone to him all the time.

then, be right by your side like nothing’s happened.

she’ll invite you to hang- and you do, because of course, you can’t say no to her.

and you’ll end up third wheeling.

a vicious cycle you can’t seem to drag yourself out of.

it started when you followed her to UNC you think- young, dumb, naïve- and absolutely infatuate with your best friend.

best friends- who never wanted to be apart, you both turned down pro contracts to go to the US. attached at the hip, co-captains for the tar heels, you did practically everything together.

you were there for her first boyfriend, and consequently her first heartbreak.

as her best friend though.

that’s all you were- and you were okay with that, even if seeing her talk to anyone else brought a bitter taste to your mouth.

and so maybe, one night, she had a little too much to drink- and she kissed you, right on the lips.

“i think i like girls but shhhhh! you can’t tell anyone.”

she whispers it to you- before passing out on your bed.

and the next day when she wakes up- she doesn’t remember the kiss, or she wants to forget it. you wouldn’t bring it up either way.

but then it happens again, and again, and again.

and you’re sucked into an endless loop of alessia kissing you, ignoring you, then acting like nothing happened- only to kiss you again.

then, she’s off signing with united, and you with arsenal- and it stops.

then when the national team calls both of you up- it starts again.

now alessia is with arsenal- and you’re completely fucked.

you’re dead tired, and quiet when you show up to training a couple days after the party- unusual on any normal day, but routine after whatever it is, that happens with alessia.

the blonde girl looks up at you from her cubby when you walk into the room- but just as quickly averts her eyes, picking up her phone and slipping out the room without a second thought.

you roll your eyes at her.

you can almost predict exactly what is happening on the other side of the door.

lotte- who was there to witness the mess you were every day after alessia kissed you at UNC, nudges you.

“you know- you can like, i don’t know, talk to other girls?”

“shut up lotte.”

“i’m just saying.”

she holds her hands up in defence- but the sympathetic smile never leaves her face.

“i’ve tried- don’t you think i have?”

cause you have- really.

not that you remember their names, or their faces.

cause all you really remember from them is that their lips weren’t nearly as nice as alessias, their hands weren’t as soft, and they didn’t know where to kiss you to leave you weak in the knees.

 “let me set you up?”

narrowing your eyes at her you go to protest- but she interrupts you before you can speak.

“just try at least, take your mind off of her for one night.”

you arrive earlier than lotte told you to- an excuse to start drinking to calm your nerves.

the restaurant is nice- definitely somewhere for a couple to go, dim lighting and light music floating through the room.

lotte’s friend shows up when you’re already a little tipsy- sitting across from you and smiling from across the table. the conversation between you two is boring, and you stopped listening a while ago.

you order another drink, and then another- then your vision is spinning and lotte’s friend harley, or hayley, or- well you don’t exactly remember her name, ‘cause she’s starting to look a little like alessia, and you’re one more shot away from making a bad decision.

“hey (y/n)- what’re you doing here?”

and she’s starting to sound like her too?

you blink- lotte’s friend coming into focus in front of you and alessia is standing by your table.

“less?”

she’s staring at you now- eyebrows raised and nodding to the girl across from you.

you try to wrack your brain for the name- but alessia is looking a little too good right now and you’re mouth has gone a little dry.

“im lotte’s friend- grace.”

alessia hums at that- her eyes still not leaving yours.

“you are…”

grace- you now remember, questions alessia.

“alessia.”

“great- can i get back to my date now alessia.”

alessia’s eyes still haven’t left yours- she barely acknowledges your date and the atmosphere between you three is tense, you sink down into your seat, eyes flickering between the two, trying to catch your breath. 

“sure thing.”

alessia disappears- slipping away and back to what you assume is her boyfriend.

whatever her name is goes back to speaking but you can’t focus on anything.

cause alessia is here.

alessia is here- and you’re supposed to be forgetting her.

but of course- as fate would have it, the blonde texts you a moment later.

What are your hopes and fears about the upcoming DCU?

Hmmmm. This is one of those things where I'm still waiting to get a bit more direction about the next upcoming universe-wide event.

My hopes?

Well, I'd like to see DC find space in the roster for at least one (1) Aqua character to be appearing regularly in a continuing title, even if they don't spin up a new Aquaman title. It's frankly embarrassing that the only things the characters have been seen in is limited run team books, B-stories in anthologies, crossovers, and movie tie-in singles for almost two years, particularly when they just had a movie.

I want a continuation for Hawkgirl, thank you.

I want to see a main-universe Justice League book back (I don't count vs Godzilla vs Kong). It doesn't HAVE to be a JLA; it could be a JLD or a JLI (or even a JLQ though JLQ is mostly a stupid joke they haul out for Pride), I just think the current Titans run is underwhelming as the premier team book.

I want to see a teen or young-adult roster team book, to use literally any of the dozens of underused characters right now in the 14-21 bracket. I would also prefer it not to be a Lost Children book (though the likelihood of that seems to be going down, given apparently Johns is going exclusive elsewhere once the current JSA run finishes up). I also would like for the team leader on the book NOT to be a Robin.

I would really like to see Action Comics return to an A,B,C story layout that's focused on Superfam broadly, and I would like to see Detective Comics join it once Ram V's run is finished for the Batfam, if Brave and the Bold is going to continue avoiding actually using BatFAM characters. Both families support multiple titles but also at least a dozen prominent characters readers want to see each. Use that space to tell stories with them.

Blue Beetle brings Dani Garrett back and has her meet Victoria Kord and they hate each other.

Someone spins up a team that consists of Renee Montoya returning as the Question, Kate Spencer, Cameron Chase and Sasha Bordeaux. After creating the perfect Rucka-bait he comes back and writes me a maxi-series of all of these characters having adventures together, with Director Bones growling at them as Waller is currently too evil and them all largely ignoring him to thump heads together. If they really can't tempt Rucka, give it to Marc Andreyko. (I am aware this is a pipedream, but join me!)

My fears?

Harley Quinn stays on Birds of Prey

This upcoming Waller event is even more character-destroying nonsense that fails to recognise her complexity (oh I know, I'm already braced)

Tim continues to not be anchored onto at least one of the Bat books as a supporting character

Tom King stays on Wonder Woman for an extended run

Someone decides we need another Joker event

Anyone tries to push the reset button too hard in the upcoming event. Currently they've got most characters pretty stable and a lot of pre-boot revival characterisation happening. I really don't want extra multiversal shenanigans right now.

• I’ve been roleplaying since what feels like forever. I started super young one summer before school started up, and I’ve been on-and-off ever since. I began in roleplay groups roleplaying Harry Potter, then got really into The Vampire Diaries-verse, and have also enjoyed Percy Jackson, supernatural town, royal rpgs, and a bunch I’ve popped into over the years so am open to different things.

• I do come from a land down under *cue the flute*. So AEST timezone, but my schedule is alll over a lot of the time.

• I’m looking to rp over discord. Fair warning, I am still getting the hang of rping on there and I have no idea how to do real fancy stuff but I’m a quick learner so we’ll be fine. I still feel like it was yesterday when I dragged my feet big time transferring from roleplaying on facebook to tumblr. Ah, time flies.

• I’m a very easy going person! Your length, I’ll match. Your ideas? I’ll pretty much lap up everything. Hate fandom rp? Cool not an issue at all! Hate oc rps and prefer fandom? Wicked! If I don’t know the lore well, I can try to wing it! Struggling to get a reply out? No stress! I’m well passed putting so much pressure onto things that they feel like a chore. a few days ago, a certain robert chromolume and i brainstormed the most boring and bad possible movie version of follies

-initial announcement: rob marshall is directing a movie of follies, starring meryl streep as sally. (apparently this was already an announcement/rumor, and i just forgot about it? lol). jeremy o harris is tapped to write the screenplay.

-they are soon joined by julia roberts as phyllis, george clooney as ben, and john c reilly as buddy.

-additional casting: alec baldwin as weismann, lily james as young sally, liza minnelli as carlotta, renee fleming as heidi

-also announced: there’s going to be a new song! more on that later.

-uh oh! julia roberts has dropped out. she landed a buzzier role—playing lucy barton in the hbo miniseries adaptation of the elizabeth strout novels (s/o to @hesupportsyou for helping us with this one). george clooney dropped out shortly afterward (he just wanted to work with julia roberts again, i don’t think his heart was really in it). they’re replaced by emma thompson and richard gere.

-final casting announcement: jo ellen pellman as young phyllis, whoever is doing the josh gad role in book of mormon as young buddy, jeremy jordan as young ben, sierra boggess as young heidi, audra mcdonald as stella, ariana debose as young stella

-jeremy o harris left the project for mysterious reasons. aaron sorkin is now scrambling to write the screenplay.

-right before shooting is set to begin, liza minnelli injures her ankle. poor liza! she’s replaced by carol burnett. theatre people on tumblr and twitter post disposable takes like “i’m wishing liza a speedy recovery, but i’m also excited to hear carol’s take on the song.” some people say stuff like “you can be excited for carol burnett without being glad that liza minnelli injured her ankle, just fyi” in response to no one in particular. neither carol burnett nor liza minnelli see any of these tweets. (liza minnelli recovers, btw.)

-one more kiss is cut for time, which means you randomly have shots of renee fleming and sierra boggess in the background. (this is particularly upsetting for renee fleming, who will spend the rest of her career sticking to opera roles.)

-the new song is by sara bareilles, written because a) the producers are hoping for a best song oscar nomination, and b) it was in alec baldwin’s contract that he gets an expanded role. there’s a promo behind-the-scenes video where rob marshall is like “one hesitation i had going into this project is we don’t really get to know weismann. we’re so lucky to have sara onboard to help us flesh him out as a character.” the song is sung by weismann, toward the end of the movie (but probably before loveland), and it’s about him looking back at his mistreatment of the follies girls, realizing he has to live with his past mistakes (broadwayworld describes it as “an anthem for the #metoo era” or something). it’s the most boring song ever written. the sara bareilles version of it plays over the end credits. it is not nominated for an oscar.

Motivations:

Anita Fite (Empress)

Anita Fite was done and has continued to be done dirty for a long time. She spent the original Young Justice run being preyed on by older men, bullied, drawn half naked, been foisted with stereotypical depictions of Vodou, having her major spotlight arc co-opted by a random team up if basically every teen hero, having the climax of her spotlight arc instead going to more Cissie angst, and then receiving an incredibly dumb write out. Literally every member of Young Justice save her (and Slobo, but his circumstances are trickier) has since resurfaced in modern comics. Anita deserves her chance in the spotlight. The current continuity reset means we don't have to stay married to her bullshit ending. There's a lot of potentially interesting ground to cover with her relationships to the loa. She can have more insane homoerotic tension with other women. Maybe she'll almost stab a werewolf to death for looking at the girl she likes wrong again! DC is also sorely lacking a magical team book at the moment. She'd do great on a team as the magic user who actually knows how to throw a punch Bring her back!!!

The Amazons (+ Diana)

Batman has Detective Comics, Superman has Action Comics, so where is Wonder Woman's Sensation Comics? Given how delightful Amazons Attack (2023) has been, it would be great to have a regular book for all of the Amazons to star in. Imagine regular B and C stories for other Wonderfamily members à la PKJ's recent Action run. It would also allow greater focus on Yara Flor and the Esquecida, who haven't had the chance to have much spotlight focused on them to build them out in relation to the Bana-Mighdall and the Themyscirans. It would also be great to be able to have more than one take on Diana at a time—imagine a Wonder Woman/Sensation Comics split as drastic as the current Zdarsky/V split in Batman and Tec. There's even a logical Diana in Man's World Vs Diana with her sisters split you could play with.

Swerve attacks Joe before his scheduled eliminator match with Dustin Rhodes and spears him through a table!!

Adam Copeland (c) vs. Penta El Zero Miedo for the TNT Championship -- Penta goes for Fear Factor on the apron, but Copeland blocks it and pushes him into the ring post. Penta runs at Copeland, who catches him with a powerslam on the apron! Copeland goes for a spear outside, but Penta moves and he hits Alex instead. Penta lands an avalanche Code Red inside, then snaps back Copeland's arm, and covers for two! Penta springboards off the ropes, but Copeland takes him out of midair with a spear for the pinfall!

Solid match here with Penta getting a lot of offense in. Kinda dragged on for me though. Rating: 3

Body King and Julia Hart surround Copeland after match. Willow comes out to help.

Renee is with Jericho, Hook, and Shibata. Jericho says Hook and Shibata will sit under the learning tree of Chris Jericho. Lmao. He lays out what they need to do to beat Shane Taylor Promotions. After Jericho leaves, Shibata uses Google translate to ask what Jericho's deal is. Then he tells Renee that he likes her necklace. Lol.

Renee is now with Copeland, Willow, Stokely, new ROH World Champion Mark Briscoe, and Eddie Kingston. Stokely suggests that Copeland defend the TNT Championship against Willow, which I think is a phenomenal idea that should absolutely happen. But they agree to a mixed tag team match against Brody and Julia.

The Bucks are backstage with a screen to show the All In footage that AEW has been hyping up all week. God. They mention the altercation between Jack Perry and someone who tried to make everything about himself, someone who is a friend of FTR. Nick suggests that FTR is behind the whole thing. Matt says they can't make accusations without proof, which is an obvious sarcastic shot at the Punk interview. Matt says they had to be EVPs at All In and had to neglect being professional wrestlers, so there should be a big asterisk next to FTR's victory over them that night. They show the footage of Punk shoving and choking Perry backstage, before the people around them stop the fight. Matt says that isn't the worst part. The worst part is filling a building with the most people ever at a wrestling show, only to be distracted by something so stupid that you lose on your big night. And FTR had the balls to stick their hands out and ask them to shake hands. Nick says at Dynasty, they're not shaking hands, you pricks.

Where do I begin? I think blaming the Punk/Perry fight on FTR and using that as an excuse for the Bucks being distracted and losing to FTR at All In is a fine angle. But obviously, the only reason this is being done at all is to give AEW an excuse to show the footage, because Tony got his feelings hurt by the recent Punk interview that no one will shut up about. I think it's a bad look for AEW to still be dwelling on this eight months later, as if they need to rely on this drama for ratings, or need to prove something to someone. Although I am not sure what Tony thinks this footage proves, as it only shows exactly what Punk said happened and only gives Punk, the well-known attention whore, more attention. This company cannot keep acknowledging every shot someone takes at them. It looks pathetic. Tony Khan is a huge man baby and needs to hire someone else to run this company and make the decisions, because he clearly isn't capable of doing it.

FTR come out to the ring with a mic. Cash asks why the Bucks are showing this footage, other than to have an excuse for losing. They are ready to move on and put this in the past. Despite the fact that AEW is now doing some of their best shows ever, they are still showing footage from eight months ago. At Dynasty, FTR have to win, not for their legacy, not to be considered the greatest of all time, but because they are sick of these "petty little bitches," the Young Bucks.

Dax says they have eclipsed the Bucks as the best tag team on the planet. At one time, the Bucks cared about the three letters AEW, but now, three other letters have taken over, and they only care about what is best for the EVPs. Dax says they are building AEW so that wrestlers can have a choice. They are building AEW for hard-working people who spend their money on tickets. And if the Bucks don't want to be part of that AEW, they can go home, because FTR have got this. Dax says the Bucks may have laid the foundation, but FTR are going to put the roof on top of the house, just to blow it right back off!!

Great delivery by Dax here. I am not sure what to make of this, as FTR basically said everything I was thinking about that All In footage being shown. It's kind of strange to show the footage, and then have someone else on the show acknowledge why showing the footage was a stupid thing, as the reasoning for why it was stupid can be applied to the real-life "man" Tony Khan as easily as it can be applied to the kayfabe Young Bucks characters. Weird to acknowledge that you knew it was a stupid thing to do, but you chose to do it anyway. I don't know anything anymore.

Ospreay comes out to the stage for an interview with Renee. He addresses the recent comments that Triple H made about not wanting people who want to work a lighter schedule and who don't want to "grind" in the WWE (comments which were obviously about Ospreay). He says there is a rumor going around that he is afraid of the grind. And he is not sure where that comes from, because he is flying back and forth from the UK to the US every week and delivering some of the best matches the world has ever seen. Normally, he wouldn't rise to this type of bait, but seeing as the person who said it is "only in the position he is in because he was grinding on the boss' daughter," he will. Ospreay says he is in no position to tell Ospreay what the grind is all about.

I have a lot of thoughts about this. I think Triple H's comments were completely asinine and unnecessary. Who wouldn't pick the lighter schedule and more money?? An idiot?? But regardless, we're back to tonight's theme of this company being unable to ignore shots taken at them and let their own programming speak for itself. I kind of get the feeling that this is all coming from Tony Khan, and isn't necessarily what these guys want to be showing or saying on TV. But who knows. It's a mess either way.

Ospreay then moves on to Danielson. He mentions Danielson saying that Ospreay is stronger and faster, and his only chance to win is to ground Ospreay. Ospreay says healthier, younger, and better men have tried and failed. But Danielson is a living legend. And Ospreay can't call himself the best wrestler in the world until after he pins Danielson. It is time for him to show everyone why he is the ace of AEW.

Yeesh. So we are back to cringe Ospreay promos after a couple of unusually good weeks. I hated every second of that. Lmao.

Chris Jericho, Hook, and Katsuyori Shibata vs. Shane Taylor, Lee Moriarty, and Anthony Ogogo -- Jericho lands a lionsault, then a top rope rana on Moriarty early on. Shibata tags in with nasty elbows and a nasty round kick to the back of Moriarty!!! Huge lariat from Taylor to Hook! Hook and Taylor trade elbows, Taylor takes Hook down with a headbutt, Hook lands a German suplex on Taylor!!! Wow! Beautiful Shibata hot tag action, as he comes in with boots in the corner, rapidly alternating jaw jabs and chest chops, a running corner dropkick, then a nice snap suplex for two on Moriarty! Shibata lands a back heel trip and goes for a tag, but Jericho pulls Hook off the apron, yelling about the plan and the learning tree. Lmao. Shibata gets a sleeper on Moriarty, but Taylor comes in with a big right hand to Shibata to break the hold, then Moriarty lands the Fang on Shibata for the pinfall!! Wtf.

I really enjoyed this match. I thought everything was done well here. Shibata looked awesome as always. Really sick of Shibata eating losses left and right though. Rating: 3.25

Dustin is with Renee. He says his strategy doesn't change since Joe was attacked. It is always grit, passion, and glory for him, and tonight will be no different.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Cristiano Argento -- Okada lands the knee neckbreaker, a dropkick, and a Rainmaker for the pinfall and looks so bored 💕❤💕. Rating: AWESOME SQUASH

Okada gets a mic and calls out Pac. He says he accepts Pac's challenge and will see him at Dynasty. HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!! Pac heads to the ring! The Bucks come from behind to attack Pac. FTR come out to even the odds. They set Matt up for Shatter Machine, but Okada grabs a chair. The Bucks go nuts with superkicks. Okada swings for the fences with chair to Pac's head. Damn!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MATCH!!!!!!!!!!

Renee is with Thunder Rosa and Toni Storm for a "champagne toast" that Storm has organized. Storm just throws the champagne in Rosa's face and partially wipes her face paint off with a towel. Purrazzo comes out to try to help, but Rosa pushes her away. This was a really weird segment.

Anna Jay vs. Mariah May -- They trade overhand chops. Anna with a nice blockbuster neckbreaker, then a neckbreaker over the second rope. Mariah lands a headbutt. Anna with a back elbow then a spinning heel kick in the corner. Mariah lands a missile dropkick off the top and a hip attack for two. Anna gets a couple of nearfalls with a hook kick and a back heel trip. She goes for something else, but Mariah reverses into a roll up for the pinfall.

This was alright. Not much to it. Rating: 1.75

Anna chokes Mariah after the match. Mina Shirakawa comes out to help Mariah. She feeds Mariah champagne and kisses her on the lips. Mariah is very happy about this. What is going on.

Alex Marvez has a sit-down interview with Mercedes. Mercedes says AEW made history with their first pay-per-view in Vegas, and she wants to make history again this year at Double or Nothing. Julia and Willow are both some of the best. She has been in the ring with Willow before. She talks about losing to Willow for the New Japan Strong Women's Championship and getting injured. She hates to lose. But she always has a plan, and she is on a mission. The lights go out. There is commotion. The lights come back to reveal Mercedes on the floor.

Samoa Joe vs. Dustin Rhodes (AEW World Championship Eliminator Match) -- Dustin with right hands outside. Joe sends Dustin face-first into the ring post. Dustin's head is busted open. Joe with jabs, elbow, chops, Manhattan drop, big boot, running back senton, and a cover for two. Dustin with a powerslam. They trade rights hands. Dustin with jabs and a bionic elbow, then Code Red for two! Joe blocks a bulldog attempt and pummels Dustin with a huge lariat, sending him outside. Dustin grabs the belt and thinks about hitting Joe, but then throws it aside. Dustin lands Cross Rhodes for two. Joe with a huge STO in the corner! Joe grabs Swerve's steel chain. The ref takes it and hands it outside. Joe grabs the belt while the ref is distracted and nails Dustin in the face, then covers him for three.

Perfectly fine match. Just short with an obvious result. Rating: 3

Joe locks in the Coquina Clutch on Dustin after the match, but Swerve comes out to break it up with a House Call kick, then lands a right hand to Joe's head with the steel chain!! Security comes out to get between them. Nana hands Swerve the AEW World Championship.

MW:  Tell me about your new AA single release, 'Don't Forget About Love' / 'Be There In The Morning'...

DCL: When I signed with Acid Jazz I had a lot of rough demos of songs I'd written over the years. I played them the tracks I wanted to record, but some were really old and I really needed to come up with some new tunes.

I had worked with Mike McEvoy and Ernie McKone on previous albums and love writing with them as they always get my vibe, so I contacted them and asked them to come up with some backing tracks.

Sometimes I'll have lyrics and sit down with my musician co-writer, but usually it's a great backing track that inspires the vocal melody and lyrics and when I heard it, it felt very uplifting and optimistic and made me think of summer. I wrote it in lockdown when we all had more than enough and things were starting to get a bit nasty. It was to remind us all about love at such a difficult time and I'm so proud of it.

Eddie Piller at Acid Jazz played me ‘Be There’ and suggested I might like to cover it. I loved the original by Rene Geyer and was really keen to give it the Dee C. Lee treatment. I loved singing it.

MW: Is there to be touring?

DCL: I would love to tour. It would be a bit daunting as it's been a very long time, in fact the last proper tour was with Guru and Gangtarr in 1993 (I think). I did a couple of PA's and small gigs around the Things Will Be Sweeter album and two shows in 2010 one for a New Years Eve show. There is talk of a tour and something I definitely want to do. The vibe from live shows is fantastic.

MW:  How are you finding doing the current circuit of radio stations, particularly promoting 'Don't Forget About Love' which seems the one being picked up on?

DCL: I'm loving it. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind and it's fantastic to be able to talk about my new music that I'm so excited and proud of, as well as getting the opportunity to revisit some amazing memories from my career in music so far. The reception has been amazingly positive and I'm blown away by it to be honest.

MW:  What was it like (for you) being a Young Gun, Going For It in the early 1980s?

DCL: Great question, I see what you did there! The 80's were an amazing time for me. I was able to give up the day job and start earning a small living singing. When I joined Wham! I had no idea how crazy it was going to get, we'd been slogging all over the place doing PA's and suddenly we were on Top Of The Pops. Then of course I left Wham! to join the Style Council and did Live Aid, so the 80's were good for me.

Those early years were the most hectic but most exciting of times. Without a doubt they started to musically shape me into the singer/ songwriter I am today.

MW: The story behind the song -'See The Day'....and why did it prove difficult to equal it success-wise?

DCL: ‘See The Day’ was held off the No.1 spot by Whitney Houston’s ‘Saving All My Love’ - disappointing for me, but a worthy winner in that race! It was just one of those songs where the vocal melody and lyrics just flowed.

I had been signed to CBS for a while and they were pushing me in a very poppy direction which I wasn't that crazy about. I had a very rough demo and played it to CBS, but they hated it, so I was reluctant to play it to Paul (Weller) and John (Weller), but they loved it and paid for the whole recording. I guess once they had done that CBS felt obliged to release it, but didn't know what to do with me direction wise after that.

I was just 20 and lacking in confidence and good management so I just carried on with the Style Council who were so incredibly busy I didn't have time to think about my solo career.

MW:  What is your most favourite record from each of these decades & why?

DCL:

1970s

Earth Wind & Fire - ‘Running’

What can you say - it’s Earth Wind and Fire - they were the very first band I saw live. They set a standard in my head musically that’s been hard to shake.

1980s

Kool & The Gang - ‘Hollywood Swinging’

It’s a serious party tune that always livens me up - a total floor stomper and a “call to the dance floor” anthem for me.

1990s

Janet Jackson - ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’

I’ve always loved the musical output from The Jackson family. This one was lifted from the Janet album - one of my all-time favourite albums. I loved all of the results of her teaming up with the amazing production team of Jam & Lewis - but their work together on Janet and this single is a particular stand out for me.

MW:  The 80s were a decade of change and extremes. Politically, what were your thoughts (then) on The Invasion Of The Falklands and The Miners Strike in relation to Red Wedge. Have your views changed in hindsight? How?

DCL: I was 20 and to be honest I didn't think much about politics then at all. But during the brief times I was at home and not listening to music, I would sit and watch TV with my Mum and we would see the soldiers going off to war and saying goodbye to their families and it was heartbreaking. Nothing has changed, it's still utterly devastating and heart breaking.

The Style Council were very political and involved in Red Wedge which was formed to get young people into politics. We toured in support of the miner's along with Spandau Ballet, The Smiths and other major stars and I remember the shows being more packed than ever as people weren't just there for the bands, they were there to help raise funds for the miner's and their families and that was the right thing for us to do.

MW: What was the first and last "record" you bought?

DCL: First: Jackson 5 - ‘The Love You Save’ ; Last: Janet Jackson - ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’

MW: Who is your favourite DJ (past & present)?

DCL: Past: Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson ; Present: Lisa I’Anson

MW:  What makes you laugh?

DCL: People laughing automatically makes me laugh - I can be in a room with people all laughing at something and have no idea what they’re laughing about. It’s pretty much guaranteed within a few minutes I’ll be joining in. Laughter is infectious!!

MW: Can you impersonate anyone famous? 

DCL: I can’t but my son can - Nat is definitely the impersonator in the family - but his best material is to impersonate fellow family members.

MW:  What is your favourite City in the world? Reasons?

DCL: Amsterdam. The culture and the art - I also like the freeness, clean air, the whole place has an underlying creative and arty vibe - which resonates strongly with me as a creative person.

MW:  What did you do Last Christmas, and what do you plan to do for this?

DCL: Home with family - and got lumbered with the cooking - but I absolutely love the tradition of the festive season and of course getting together with my loved ones is very special.

It will be very much the same this year - but with an addition of my beautiful grandson - it will be the second Christmas we spend with him.

1) Based on a fave book series of mine, but honestly does not need to have any relation to it and can be adapted to any ideas. Basically, girl runs away from home in her mid teens, meets guy around her age who takes her in with him and his guardian who have some secrets, turns out they’re *some type of supernatural creature idk can be whatever we like*. Turns out she has some illness that he can’t cure alone and he has to agree to hand her over to his enemies so that they can cure her, but it also will wipe her memories and she will forget her life before. Fast forward a few years, he’s never stopped protecting her but he’s never gotten close because he can’t bear it. She just happens to go with her friends to the club he now owns. Drama ensues.

2) ““oh, can we take it nice && slow?” two strangers who meet every weekend at a club. nothing but first names are shared. they use each other to relieve the stress of their weeks. hot && heavy dancing. making out on the dance floor. on occasion hookups in the corner of the club. but the moment they leave the club, it’s as if they don’t exist. their chemistry is electric, but there unspoken complications in their lives that they just understand. it isn’t until a new monday comes around && she walks into the office to meet her new boss. oh, shit. her weekend hook up is her new boss. she assumes he’s married with the ring on his finger, she has no idea he’s widowed && he has no idea that she has a child at home”

3) “OR hey what about a historical plot where Muse A and Muse B are both next in line to the throne of their neighbouring countries that once used to be one nation. There’s been a push for many years to unite the kingdoms once more, and many want Muse A and Muse B to marry in order for it to happen. But, Muse A and Muse B absolutely hate each other, and can’t stand the idea of being around one another. Until, they’re forced into the engagement by their parents, and are made to spend countless hours with one another. Lots of bickering, and tension ensue, as they get closer asdfjkl”

But oops you’re not him, you’re his brother and you’re being really kind to me and calming me down, and those kisses on the top of my head are so new to me.’ also referred to as the plot where Muse A is pregnant, her manipulative ex boyfriend is the father, however Muse B aka his brother had always had a thing for Muse A. The night Muse A comes banging on his brothers door while Muse B is staying there for a while, he consoles her and decides to help her through the break up and pregnancy. However feelings get involved, drama, fights, and his older/younger brother isn’t so happy about it. Yes pls”

5) “maybe a plot where muse a and muse b broke up like five years ago and then muse a got a call from muse b’s parents telling him that she got into an accident and had temporary amnesia and only remember the time when they were together so they’re asking him for a favor to go back home?”

6) two muses who hate each other and are constantly competing at everything and everyone thinks they can’t stand each other but oh wait you’re really hot let’s have angry sex oh no wait now i have feelings

Why I settled to do street-level theologizing...

My first encounter with C. René Padilla in Thun, Switzerland changed the direction of my life. I was young student of theology then, dreaming to be a fine theologian like him. I knew then that he was one of the celebrated pillars of integral mission and that he had studied theology under the renowned Bible scholar F.F. Bruce. So, I came to his session during the fifth global gathering of the Micah Network with the hopes of hearing some affirmation for the path I have chosen to tread. But instead he cracked a line that hit like a jolt of lightning: 

‘Theology has become an academic science which you need to study and has become the walls that separated the church from the people.’

In between the lines, I heard him saying that there was something in the way that theology has been done which eventually hindered it from serving the people of God. I remember making a commitment that day to do something about this problem. And so, upon returning to Manila, I devoted myself to a kind of ‘street-level theologizing.’

I blogged voraciously with people in the pews in mind, convinced that theology must surely be ‘in, with, and under’ the nitty gritty details of public life. 

I accepted the challenge of writing books in the experimental mix of Filipino and English (Taglish). 

Not exactly the language and format of the academia, but one René would have approved -the popularized medium of conversation by ordinary people.
