Lay Me Down In The River || C x L (flashback)
She had to hand in her resignation personally. It was the least she could do for Mrs. Lockwood, who had, despite her many flaws, given Cami a chance she wouldn’t have otherwise gotten when it came to helping her daughter. So she’d gone to the Mayor’s office with exactly that purpose in mind, but to her surprise, Mrs. Lockwood would have none of it.
“ - Give her a chance, Miss O’Connell, she’s a stubborn young lady.”
“ - It’s not about Lydia! It’s about me, this isn’t-... Really, this isn’t her fault.”
“ - You’ve lasted longer than the others have, you simply cannot throw the towel in now. I won’t allow it!.. I ask you only to give the matter some more thought. Think of the progress you’ve made. Give it a week, and call me when you’re ready. Now, I have a pressing appointment, Miss O’Connell, thank-you for the visit, I must ask that you take your leave.”
The Mayor didn’t leave her much choice either. She’d stood up immediately, crossed the room and opened the door for her. Rising to her feet slowly, she’d had no choice but to pick up her resignation letter and allow herself to be escorted out of the bureau dejectedly. There was no alternative here. Already, she was resolved to leave town. But if Mrs. Lockwood wouldn’t hear it now, she’d have to place a long-distance call in a week’s time and waste a second conversation reiterating the decision she’d made. As she headed for the elevators, Cami reflected bitterly on the fact that every single goodbye was making out to be more difficult than she’d naively hoped. And just as the elevator doors sprung open and an elegant redhead stepped out, Cami cursed audibly for the second time that morning. @mcrtinlydia
“... Lydia.”
