Today, I got out the paints again in earnest for the first time since I finished painting Hornpot back in, what, April? So it’s been like ten months.

I’d forgotten how good it feels to paint. I really loved it. I got genuinely emotional holding my brushes again. It was real Sweeney Todd “My friend” kind of moment.

As you can see, all I actually painted today were Katia’s steel armor plates and the head of her axe. I decided to start there because those are parts that need to be painted before the surrounding parts, like the raised parts of her armor, can be done, as well as the fur and leather parts of her bracers and boots.

I did the first coat in the morning, and a second layer in the evening. It took a bit over half an hour of painting each time, plus about five to ten minutes for setup and cleanup. It’s a time-consuming habit, and that’s part of it that I definitely didn’t forget.

On the way home from work, I bought some more paints. Four of them are pictured here, but there’s actually a couple more, too: a light brown for her hair, plus a light gold for the raised parts of her armor plates.

The plan is to use the “gorgon blue” tomorrow for her skin, and then later the “blue tone” to darken and highlight the deeper parts of her musculature. I want very badly for her muscles to look as awesome as they can.

The purple is probably not truly necessary. I actually already have a darker purple than the “oozing purple” I bought, and the purple tone is probably downright silly given that I can only use it on her lips. The purple is meant to be the highlight color for her lips and for her scars. Remember, though you can’t see them here, Katia does have many scars on her arms and legs, plus one on her chest and one on her stomach from when she was stabbed and thought she was going to die. Did she get both stab wounds at once, or was she nearly killed twice? I don’t know. It doesn’t matter too much.

Will this light blue skin work for her? I have no idea. I asked the old (59 years old) guy at the comic shop, and showed him the first set of pictures that are on this post to show him what kind of figure I’m working on. “I’m going for a Tolkien-inspired blue-gray orc instead of a Warhammer green Ork,” I said, which made him stop and think for a second, but he got it.

They sell Warhammer minis, so, I mean, he knows what Warhammer’s Orks look like.

I also asked him for advice on doing washes, and he said that he always used to make his own washes by thinning his paints with water and adding a drop of dish soap, which is a tactic I’ve heard of before. Then he would just blow air onto his figures, like, with his mouth, to blast the wash into the crevices that they needed to be in.

Will I try that with Katia? I mean... I may as well, I suppose. Maybe I’ll try it with the red cloth on her loincloth first, and not on the blue of her face.

I have reds and red washes already, from painting Hornpot last year.

I also have orange for her eyes already, from painting Clawdia last year.

I have a lot of paints now. Too many paints. I’m drowning in paints!

Okay, not really, but I’ll bet I’d die if I ate them all.

Well, I’ll keep you posted. Tomorrow’s going to be make-or-break time as I see how Katia looks in blue. I was unable to find a grayish blue, but this is pretty close. It looks grayer in real life than it looks in the photos...

And I’m kind of hoping that adding the really deep, dark blue into her biceps and quads will look cool. I mean. I really, really want it to, so I’m going to make goddamn sure it does. If I accidentally get her skin too dark, I can always just do some dry brushing to lighten it. That’s what I did with both Hornpot AND Clawdia after their washes, and they turned out...

Well, they turned out. That’s what matters more than anything.
